3 killed in separate accidents

Dera Bassi, February 28
Three persons were killed in separate road accidents at Lalru, Banur and Zirakpur today.
An engineering student of MM University, Jharmari, was killed after a truck hit his motorcycle on the national highway near Sarsini village.

The deceased had been identified as Kapil Patial. He hailed from Palampur in Himachal pardesh.

In the accident, another student Santosh was also seriously injured. They were admitted to Healing Touch Hospital in Ambala city, where Kapil breathed his last. Santosh is undergoing treatment.

The police had registered a case against truck driver Ravinder Singh, a resident of Roorkee village, under Sections 279, 304-A and 337 of the IPC. Body of 
the victim has been handed over to his relatives after conducting the postmortem.

In another accident, a five-year-old boy was killed on the Zirakpur-Pabhat road. The child was identified as Jantu, son of labourers working at the AKM brick kiln in Pabhaat village. They hail from Bihar.

An unidentified vehicle had hit the child. The police had registered a case.

In the third accident, which occurred on the Zirakpur-Rajpura road, a 70-yesr-old man was killed on being hit by a school bus.

The deceased has as Chajju Singh of Kanour village. The police has registered a case against the bus driver. The body was handed over to the relatives.

Patiala college shines at Gurmat Sangeet Contest

The music and gurmat sangeet department of Mata Gujri College organised Gurmat Sangeet Contest here today.
Prof Kirpal Singh Badungar, former president, SGPC, was the chief guest, and Dr Gurmohan Singh, Vice-Chancellor, Shri Guru Granth Sahib World University, Fatehgarh Sahib, presided over the function. Students from various colleges participated.

Highlighting the importance of music in life, Prof Badungar said music was food for soul. He said Gurbani was composed in 31 ragas, with each raga having a deep impact on the body and mind. He said these days people had no time to get in touch with their religion, culture and heritage. He motivated students to listen and learn gurmat sangeet.

In the group shabad, Khalsa College, Patiala, won the first prize, while Sri Guru Teg Bahadur Khalsa College, Sri Anandpur Sahib, and Gobindgarh Public College, Alohar, Khanna, stood second and third respectively.

Prof Manjeet Singh and Prof Dilbag Singh recited Basant Raag with Tanti Saaj along with students. A book titled “Raag Taal Shastar Shabad Bandhishan” was also released.

Woman duped of money

Kalka, February 28
Hardeep Kaur, a resident of Kabir Panthi Mohalla, Pinjore, reported to the police that a youth duped her of Rs 12,900 at an  ATM booth of the PNB.

She said a youth helped her in withdrawing money. When she saw the receipt after withdrawing Rs 2,100, she saw Rs 15,000 had been withdrawn. The police is trying to trace the accused. — OC

Air Marshal lauds officers for enhancing combat potential

Ambala, February 28
Air Marshal Arup Raha, Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Indian Air Force’s western command, today arrived here on a two-day visit. He was accompanied by his wife Lily Raha.

While interacting with the Air Force personnel, he appreciated the commitment and sense of purpose displayed by the officers. He appreciated efforts put in by them in enhancing the combat potential of the force. The Air Marshal also visited various sections and squadrons of the base.

Earlier, Air Marshal Raha laid a wreath at the station war memorial, ‘A Frozen Tear’, as a mark of respect to martyrs.

Man gets life sentence for killing wife

Mohali, February 28
A local court today awarded life sentence to a man for murdering his wife. Krishan Kumar, alias Bablu, had murdered his wife Shobha with a grass cutter on June 18, 2009, following a tiff. The couple had been residing in a rented accommodation at Phase XI.

In another case, two persons, Sandip, alias Pinky, and Rajinder Sharma from Sector 38 have been sentenced to seven years in jail for burglary last year. The accused had opened fire at a truck driver and looted money at Industrial Area Phase I. The victim was also hit with a rod. The police had recovered a country-made pistol, a live cartridge and a dagger from the possession of the culprits.

14-day custody for Park Plaza theft accused

Chandigarh, February 28
Ramesh Bhanaji Chhag, an accused in the theft case reported at Hotel Park Plaza in Sector 17 was today produced in a local court which sent him to a 14-day judicial custody.

His accomplice Jayesh R Sejpal is on the run. The police said the two had a notorious past and were into the world of crime for the past 13 years and had been targeting posh hotels. They hail from Mumbai and have also been arrested in the past by the police of various states.

The accused had targeted an NRI doctor couple and had decamped with their valuables worth over Rs 30 lakh. — TNS

Theft bid foiled at ATM

Chandigarh, February 28
Unidentified miscreants made a foiled attempt to steal cash from an ATM machine of Axis Bank with the help of an electric cutter at Sector 7 last night.
Sources said the security guard of the machine, Ram Lal, was drunk and sleeping on duty when the theft came to light. The thieves fled the spot while leaving the cutter behind after they noticed a patrolling police party.

The police has registered a case and has started the investigation.

PU prof loses Rs 47,000 to ATM cloning

Panchkula, February 28
In a first of its kind ATM cloning case in Panchkula, a PU professor was shocked to see a message late night that Rs 47,000 had been withdrawn from his account that too from Delhi.

The victim, Dr Rajesh Rattan, a resident of Sector 6, Panchkula, was surprised to see that though his ATM card was with him yet how come his transaction was possible and that too from Delhi.

The Panchkula police has registered a case at the Sector 5 police station, Panchkula. Dr Rajesh is working as an assistant professor with the dental department and has an account with the State Bank of India.

Surprisingly, the victim had swiped his card at a petrol pump in Sector 2, Panchkula, where the police went for checking here this evening.

“As after transactions, one receives messages, even the victim got a message on his cell phone late night which he saw in the morning. It was mentioned that Rs 47,000 had been withdrawn from his SBI account,” said police. — TNS

Nine youths booked for advocate’s murder

Mohali, February 28
The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and Panjab University connection surfaced in the yesterday’s firing incident, which claimed the life of advocate Amarpreet Singh and left his cousins Gaganjot Singh and Sharanjit Singh seriously injured last night.

The police has registered a murder case against nine youths, including Sunil Bhanot, alias Chhoti, Rajat, Vishal, Deepak Kaushal, alias Golu, Dharminder Singh, Kevin Sushant alias Richi, Onkar Singh, Sunbir Singh and Jaswinder Singh in this connection.

Jaswinder Singh is the son of SGPC member Ranjit Singh, who is said to be the right hand of senior SAD leader Sharanjit Singh Dhillon. Chhoti and Rajat, both residents of Burail village, are members of the Students’ Organisation of Panjab University (SOPU).

Ranjit Singh is a resident of Mangli Khas village in Ludhiana. The police has impounded Ranjit Singh’s Ford Endeavour SUV (PB-10T-2504).

Police sources said Ranjit Singh, who reportedly joined the police investigations today, claimed that his son Jaswinder, a Class XII student, had told him that he was going to attend a wedding function of his friend. “I am unaware about his involvement in the incident,” said the police while quoting Ranjit Singh.

The other accused Rajat, a law student, and Chhoti are active member of SOPU. Chhoti was also made convener of the SOPU two years before. Both Rajat and Chhoti, former students of SD College, Sector 32, were notorious for indulging in brawls and other criminal activities.

Manjit Singh Sethi, former municipal councillor and father of Gaganjot Singh, said Jaswinder Singh had threatened the area residents saying he was the son of a SGPC member.

Dharminder is a resident of Meharban village in Ludhiana, while Vishal and Richi are residents of Delhi and Kharar. Golu lives in Phase 3A, Mohali.

On the complaint of Manjit Singh Sethi, a case under Sections 302, 307, 427, 506, 148, 149, IPC and 25/ 27/ 54/59 of Arms Act has been registered against the accused at the Mataur police station today.

Notably, Mohali-based advocate Amarpreet Singh, aka Lucky, was shot dead after receiving two gunshots in his chest, while his cousin Gaganjot Singh and his friend Sharanjit Singh received shots after the accused, living in the neighbourhood, opened fire after a tiff over parking last night. Gaganjot and Sharanjit’s condition is said to be stable.

Five-day remand for two accused

Amritsar-based Sunbir Singh and Onkar Singh, both relatives, who were caught by residents and handed over to the police, were produced in 
court this evening. Both have been sent to a five-day remand.

More than one weapon used in crime

SP (City) Swarndeep Singh said the preliminary inquiries into the case revealed that more than one weapon had been used in the crime. We recovered a round of 7.65 mm which could be shot by a .32 bore pistol. We came to know that Dharminder and Vishal had weapons. Though it is not yet clear, three to four weapons might have been used by the accused, said Swarndeep Singh. In the FIR report, Sethi had alleged his nephew Lucky was shot at by Dharminder Singh, while Rajat and Chhoti had opened fired on his son Gagnjot and Sharanjit Singh respectively. Sethi also alleged that most of them were carrying weapons when they ran away from the spot.

Post-mortem conducted

Amarpreet’s heart and lungs were ruptured by the bullet, which led to his death, stated the post-mortem report of the deceased. Two bullets were reportedly found in the body. Earlier, the board of doctors, who were conducting the post-mortem, faced problem when they could not trace one of the bullets. The body was shifted to Government Multi Specialty Hospital, Sector 16, for a city scan, MRI and digital X-ray to trace the bullet. The bullet in question was found in the pelvis.

Owner of the house held

Initiating an action for not heeding to the Mohali Deputy Commissioner’s order regarding registration of tenants or paying guests, the police today arrested Janak Raj, owner of the house in which the accused were staying. SHO of Mataur Police Station Atul Soni confirmed the news. He would be produced in court tomorrow. Some neighbours claimed the accused were living as paying guests in the house and were paying around Rs 13,000 for one room.

Advocates boycott work

The work remained suspended in all the district courts of the tricity as advocates decided to boycott the work in protest of killing of their colleague, Amarpreet Singh. Several litigants faced harassment as most of the cases were adjourned in the courts. The lawyers here, who were led by the area’s MLA Balbir Singh Sidhu, also blocked traffic at Phase III-V light point and later presented a memorandum to Mohali Deputy Commissioner in this regard.

460 PG accommodations in old sectors: GMADA

As many as 460 paying guest accommodations are present in Sectors 54 to Sector 71, according to a recent survey conducted by the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority. GMADA’s Estate Officer Navjot Kaur said all these owners were served notices, following which 97 claimed to have closed the business. Under rules of the Punjab Regional and Town Planning and Development Act 1995, one hearing is must before taking any action. Hearings are on in this regard. If these owners do not suspend their activities, we will initiate action, said Navjot Kaur.

For 4-yr-old Gursifat, his father will soon return

For four-year-old Gursifat Singh, his father Amarpreet Singh will soon be returning home to attend his uncle’s wedding.
The child is oblivious of the fact that his father was shot dead yesterday in front of his house in Phase 3-A here.

“See this tent. It has been set up for my chachu’s wedding,” said Gursifat Singh, pointing towards the tent erected for visitors to pay condolences.

Unaware of the tragedy, which shattered his entire family, the child was busy playing football and enjoying swings in the park in front of his house.

Gursifat’s uncle said the child was under the impression that celebrations for his uncle Vicky’s marriage were still on. Vicky, who came from Australia recently, had got married on February 2.

Gursifat is also happy as the family has bought a new car just two days ago, he said.

Amarpreet Singh was planning to take his cousin Gaganjot Singh and some other friends for dinner as a treat for the new car when he entered into the scuffle that claimed his life, the relative said.

Death due to drug overdose: Police files chargesheet

The Chandigarh Police today filed a chargesheet in the case involving the death of a college girl, Radhika Vashisht, due to drug overdose in December last year. The police filed the chargesheet under the Section 304 of the IPC for culpable homicide not amounting to murder against two youths, Saurabh and Gagandeep. The third accused, hotel manager Kishan Kumar, has been charged with causing destruction of evidence under Section 201 of the IPC. The chargesheet was filed in the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate.

Radhika Vashisht, a 21-year-old BA-II student of Government College, Sector 11, had died of drug overdose on December 18 last year. She hailed from Ambala and was staying as a paying guest. She had consumed a heavy dose of heroin at Hotel Hill View in Sector 22, where her friend Shaina had called her.

The police filed the chargesheet under Sections 304, 328 and 34 of the IPC and Sections 21 and 22 of the NDPS Act against Gagandeep, a resident of Sector 24, and Saurabh from Amritsar. Radhika was rushed to the Sector 16 hospital in an unconscious state and died the following day at the PGI. The police had recovered 4.5 gram heroin from the possession of the two accused. During the interrogation, the two accused had confessed that they brought the drug consignment from a person in Amritsar.

Two days after Radhika's death, the UT police had also arrested the hotel manager, Kishan Kumar, in a case of criminal conspiracy. As per the chargesheet, the manager knew about the drugs being supplied to the girls in the hotel. He did not inform the police when Radhika became unconscious and was being taken to the hospital.

Radhika’s friend, who is a model and was staying in the city due to her assignments, has been made a witness in the case, the chargesheet stated.

Domestic help flees with Rs 1 lakh

A prominent Punjabi writer, Ram Swarup Gautam, was duped of Rs 1 lakh by his driver who had been working for him for the past three years.
The complainant runs an advertising agency in the name of Vision Enterprises in Sector 42.

One of the complainants, Govardhan Gabbi, who is Ram Swarup's partner, reported to the police that Harry, alias Jang Bahadur, a resident of Marthana village in Nepal, fled with an amount of Rs 1 lakh which was given to him to deposit in the State Bank of India, Sector 42. He did not deposit the said amount and ran away.

A case of criminal breach of trust under Section 406 of the Indian Penal Code has been registered at the Sector 36 police station.

The accused, Jang Bahadur (37), had been working with Ram Swarup for the past three years.

"Yesterday, we sent him to deposit the money in a bank at Sector 42-B branch of the State Bank of India along with another employee. He fled with Rs 1 lakh," said 
Govardhan.

Budget: City sports department gets Rs 17 crore

In order to improve sports and youth services of the City Beautiful, the UT Administration has been allotted with a budget of over Rs 17 crore, today.
With that much grants in hand, the sports department is looking forward to bringing new infrastructure and maintaining existing infrastructure.

“We are happy with the grants and hopefully the projects in the pipeline will see a ray of hope soon. The budget will be used in all new projects including International stadium in Sector 42 and indoor Complexes in Sector 7. The department is also looking forward to establishing international-standard football and hockey stadiums at the Sports Complex of Sector 42,” said JDS Sidhu, Joint Director Sports, the UT Sports Department.

On other hand, the local sportsperson along with new infrastructure also wanted improvement in the present infrastructure. The work to uplift Football Stadium, Sector 17, and Athletics Complex, Sector 46, is pending since 2008 and the files are lying unattended with the department of urban planning. The layout of the football stadium was prepared way back in 1980-81 whereas that of the Sports-cum-Athletics Complex Sector 46 was made in 1983-84.

“The upcoming infrastructure will surely improve the sports facilities here but there is a dire need to improve the present infrastructure. The gyms, sitting-stands, washrooms of almost all the local stadiums need to be improved. Hopefully, the authorities will also look into this matter,” said Anjuman Khan.

Another player, added, “We are looking forward for the new status of sports in the City Beautiful. We have many facilities here but they should not be neglected. I am happy that new projects are being introduced for the welfare of sports and hopefully they will come up soon,” said Gurpreet Sidhu.

West Zone win by 122 runs

In the ongoing league matches of 10th All India Oriental Insurance Cricket tournament, teams of West Zone and South Zone won their respective matches, here today.

In the first match, West Zone defeated East Zone by 112 runs. After elected to bat first, the team posted 158 runs. Vinod Kini (50) and Jatindera Ingle (29) were the main scorers for the team. Later, Ashsih Dudi contributed 20 off 9.

In reply, the East Zone bundled out on a mere total of 46 runs with Ashish Dudi taking a five-wicket haul for 7 runs.

Brief Scores:

West Zone-158 for 4 in 20 overs (Vinod Kini 50, Jatindera Ingle 29, Ashsish Dudi 20, S Ghosh 2 for 27, Rajesh Kumar 2 for 19).

East Zone-46 all out in 14.1 overs (Ali Rashid 27, Ashish Dudi 5 for 7, Jatindera Ingle 2 for 5, Vijay Dixit 2 for 7).

In the second match, the South Zone defeated Central Zone by 27 runs. South Zone after winning the toss scored 144 runs with Harish Puthran playing a 38-run knock. He was ably supported by S Vidyanad (29) and P Ravi Kumar. For the bowling side, Vivek Bhalekar claimed 3 for 22.

In reply, the central batsman failed to attain the target and bundled out for a total of 117 runs. Harish Puthran claimed 3 for 30 while Nageswara Rao took 2 for 14 runs in his 
four overs.

Earlier, in the previous league matches, the team of North zone defeated South Zone by 78 runs, the West zone defeated South zone by 29 runs.
