Tractor-trailer overturns, leads to traffic jam

Employees of local trader robbed of Rs 14 lakh
Ambala, February 27 Two employees of Malhotra brother, local dealers of the cigarette company were on their way to the local branch of the J & K bank to deposit the cash, when two youth approached them. Before the two could realise their intentions, the miscreants threw chilly powder in their eye and snatched the bag. Even as the two tried to catch the miscreants, but they managed to flee from the scene. As the matter was reported to the police, a team of senior officials including police commission Rajbir Deswal and DCP Ashok Kumar reached the spot to take stock of the situation. The police later registered a case under various sections of the law against two unidentified persons and started investigations. |
PEC admission scam: Accused granted bail
Chandigarh, February 27 The CBI had arrested Kishore Yadav on January 13 from Gurgaon. After spending seven days in police custody, he was sent to judicial custody and then he applied for bail. As per the CBI case, Yadav, along with prime accused, Dr Nishikant and Mahinder Bajaj, had allegedly planned the scam to get eleven students admitted to the engineering college on the basis of forged documents. Kishore Yadav was declared a proclaimed offender by the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate at the time the scam came to light. The case dates back to September 8, 2010, when the premier investigating agency registered a case of forgery against 11 students of Punjab Engineering College, who had allegedly taken admission through forged Nepalese identification cards under a college scheme meant for foreign students and NRIs. The CBI then picked up alleged mastermind, Dr Nishikant, a chemistry doctorate holder who ran a coaching centre, in September, 2010. The CBI said the accused was adept at forging documents and made identity cards of Nepal and Bhutan and gave them to the students in return for a huge amount ranging between Rs 10 and Rs 15 lakh. The second accused, Mahinder Bajaj, is a dental technician and an old friend of Nishikant. Bajaj, a resident of Hisar, was arrested in October 2010. Third rape accused held The police today arrested Swaran Singh, the third accused, in the rape case of a 15-year-old girl. Swaran Singh, a taxi driver at Kharar, along with Gaurav Sharma, another friend of the main accused Amit Sharma, had picked up the victim from her house at Raipur village. The victim was taken to a room at the taxi stand where she was kept for two days. Gaurav and Swaran were booked under Section 120 B of the IPC. The police has also recovered the car used in the crime. Amit and Gaurav were sent to judicial custody by a local court. The victim met Amit during a wedding on February 3. On February 22, Amit called the victim on the pretext of celebrating his birthday. Swaran Singh was produced in the court, which sent him to judicial custody. Cop caught drinking Panchkula: Deputy Commissioner of Police, Panchkula, Ashwin Shenvi today caught a police officer posted at the Sector 5 police station consuming liquor in a PCR vehicle. The police officer, Assistant Sub-Inspector Ramesh Chand, was taken to the General Hospital, Sector 6, for a medical examination. |

Judge chides police officers
Panchkula, February 27 The police personnel were snubbed for the act. The case had come up for hearing before the Additional District and Session's Judge. Two accused, Sunil and Babblu, had allegedly murdered Sunil's girlfriend. On October 19, 2011, Pooja (24) was found murdered near an under-construction shop at the MDC, Panchkula. The police said Pooja was forcing Sunil for marriage. He, along with his friend, strangled her on a bus. Babblu was declared a juvenile as he is 17-year-old. During the last hearing, the Judge had asked the police to take the accused to the juvenile home, but he was taken to the Ambala Central Jail. After the judicial custody ended today, the accused was produced before the Judge, who snubbed the police, asking it why the accused was not produced before the juvenile justice board. To which the police replied that it was not aware of the same. It was learnt that the juvenile was kept in the jail for 14 days. Pooja used to work in Vardhaman factory at Baddi. As per investigations, the two strangled her on the bus and after over an hour they threw the body out of the bus near shops. |

Panchkula, February 27 On October 5, 2010, Arnav Bansal, was kidnapped from his house in Sector 7, Panchkula, when he was playing outside his house. It was on January 21, 2013, when the local court sentenced Ravinder to life imprisonment in the Jiya kidnapping case. A fine of Rs 25,000 was also imposed. In this case, the judge had also mentioned that the investigations done by the police were shoddy and were introduced to help the accused. It was after Makhhan Bansal, Arnav’s grand father and his uncle had identified Ravinder that he was convicted. Bansal had identified saying that it was this man to whom he had handed over the ransom to. Even the uncle of the child identified saying that he had seen the accused kidnapping Arnav while the latter was playing with his twin brother and two cousins. Ravinder has alone committed three kidnappings- Jiya, Arnav and Mehak kidnapping. Apart from these three kidnappings, he had also tried to kidnap a woman and her child sitting in the car at Sector 11. The police said that he had also committed several robberies and thefts alone. Ravinder, a graduate, belonging to a well-off family, owned many marriage palaces in Zirakpur, which he sold off recently in order to invest in some lottery and gambling business. Ravinder, a father of two, lives in Gurgaon, but was currently staying at his in-laws place in Sector 12, Panchkula, when he entered the world of crime. In 2001, Ravinder had murdered his father. He was arrested in December 2011 from the Sector 11 and 15 light point in Panchkula, when he was trying to flee after stealing a Maruti Sx4 car from a gymnasium in Mohali. The Panchkula police was hunting for him for the past three
years.

Arrest warrants issued against mobile shop owner in Baddi

Panchkula, February 27 Arrest warrants have been issued against Pankaj Bhandari, a mobile shop owner, who is absconding. The Panchkula police today conducted raids in Baddi but Bhandari was absconding. Ashish, the sim card dealer, who has already been arrested, was a worker at the shop. It is suspected that Bhandari provided fake connections to the accused. Jyoti (24) was found murdered on November 22, 2012, near Sector 21, Panchkula. The local court today granted the permission to Gurmeet, for the execution of general power of attorney in his brother’s name before the Ambala Tehsildar. Gurmeet is an accused in the Jyoti murder. It was recently when Gurmeet had moved an application regarding the same before the judge. The accused is presently lodged at the Ambala jail. |

Woman robbed of gold jewellery
Panchkula, February 27 The victim, Lakhbir Kaur, is a resident of Sector 39, Chandigarh. She was returning home, when two women, who came in a car, offered her a lift. The victim said when she alighted form the car, she realised that her gold bangles and a chain were missing. Recently, the gang had robbed a 70-year-old woman of her gold bangles after offering her a lift. The gang also attacked a Sub-Inspector at Pinjore. A number of cases under Section 307(attempt to murder) and Section 392 (robbery) have been registered against them in Panchkula. It is learnt that the gang members belong to Sangrur, Patiala and Abohar. |

Chandigarh, February 27 The teams, including Indian Overseas Bank, Chennai, Oil & Natural Gas Commission, New Delhi, Central Reserve Police Force, New Delhi, Punjab Basketball Association, Ludhiana, Punjab Armed Police Force, Jalandhar, Army Sports Control Board, New Delhi, Rail Coach Factory, Kapurthala and Coaching Centre, Chandigarh, will vie for the cup. The tournament is being organised by Sports Department under the aegis of Basketball Federation of India (BFI) in collaboration with Chandigarh Basketball Association. The Sports Department will distribute the cash prizes of Rs 1,50,000, Rs 75,000 and Rs 50, 000, to the top three teams.The eight teams will be divided in two pools and all the matches will be played on league-cum-knock-out basis.
