Patiala, February 25
Mesmerising performances by youths of six countries entertained the audience in the packed-to- capacity, Guru Tegh Bahadur Hall on the second day of the 6th South Asian Universities Youth Festival (SAUFEST), being organised by Punjabi University’s Department of Youth Welfare, in collaboration with Association of Indian Universities (AIU), here.

The events which attracted the viewers comprised light vocal, folk dance, debate, and poster making. Youths from India, Bhutan, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Nepal presented their traditional dances in the folk dance and light vocal events.

The participants debated on the topic,” Culture and not commerce should be the agenda of development in the Asian countries.”

Khalsa college basks in ex-students’ glory

Khalsa College, Patiala, conferred College Ratan awards on five of its old students for remarkable achievements in their respective fields during the old students meet and cultural evening at the college campus, here . Dr Manjeet Singh, former Dean, College Development Council, Punjabi University, and President OSA graced the occasion as chief guest. Renowned Punjabi folk singer Sardool Sikandar was the guest of honour.

The honoured persons, included Dr Sukhjeet Singh Chahal who is practising surgeon in California , Gill Surjeet in the field of literature and culture, Prof Ambika in the field of teaching, international boxer DSP Harpal Singh in the field of sports and Amandeep Kaur, who has been selected by Cambridge University, UK for pursuing PhD in Mathematics sponsored by SGPC, Amritsar, in the field of academics.

Dr Manjeet Singh said old students meet was a unique form to unite with old college mates and its chief objective was to make Old Students Association more dynamic, interactive and inclusive. College principal Dr Ubha while welcoming the guests highlighted the achievements made by the college in the field of academics, sports and cultural activities.

Dr Sukhjeet Singh Chahal rekindled his pleasant old memories spent at alma mater. Sardool Sikandar enthralled the audience with his soulful renditions. His melodious songs left the audience spell bound.

Youth run over by train

Ambala, February 25
A youth was run over by a train near Ambala City railway station last night. The deceased Shubham Anand was a resident of Radha Kishan Bazar, Ambala City. He was doing chartered accountancy course at Chandigarh but had been missing from his house since last evening. When he did not return home by late evening his parents started searching for him. When they were crossing Agarsain Chowk they were informed by someone that a youth was run over by a speedy train.

The parents went there and found that the deceased was Shubham. Railway police handed over the victim's body to parents after the postmortem. The motorcycle of the deceased was also recovered lying close to railway track. — TNS

Woman stabbed by unidentified assailant

Ambala, February 25
An unidenfied person stabbed a lady, who a panchayat member of village Kaulan and a resident of adjoining village Jandali, here last night.

According to the information a muffled assailant came at the residence of Pushpa Rani around midnight and knocked her door. As soon as she opened the door the person attacked her with knife. She sustained serious injuries on her neck and stomach. After the attack the assailant managed to flee from there.

The victim's family member chased him but they could not find him out. The victim was rushed to civil hospital at Ambala City.

The police was of the view that it could not be a matter of robbery, that there could be some rivalry between the assailant and the victim which this incident. According to Baldev Nagar Police SHO Pawan Kumar, a case was registered on the complaint of the victim's husband against the unidentified assailant.

Forensic experts were also summoned by the police but no clue of the assailant was achieved so far. The people of the locality are panicked after this incident. — TNS

Health dept on toes to check spread of swine flu

Ambala, February 25
The authorities have been on their toes to check the spread of H1N1 virus ever since a 28-year-old man died of swine flu in the city.
Sunil Kumar, a resident of Nicholson Road, died at a private hospital at Mohali after remaining on a ventilator for more than 10 days.

Senior officials of the health department stated that four patients with swine flu like symptoms were kept under observation. The Deputy Civil Surgeon said doctors had been asked to collect samples of those showing swine flu like symptoms and take all precautionary measures to curtail the spread of the disease. The department has already set up an isolation ward in the Civil Hospital and has made available masks, tablets and Tamiflu in the district. The department stated that H1N1 virus spread more quickly in winter and therefore the department was taking all measures to ensure that any possibility of spread of the disease was curtailed.

The doctors said those showing symptoms of swine flu should get themselves examined for H1N1 virus.

Court turns down murder accused’s bail application

Mohali, February 25
While cancelling the bail application of Manpreet Kaur, accused of murdering her husband by serving him a soft drink laced with poison extracted from a lizard, the local court ordered to match the samples of the accused and her sister Baljit Kaur’s handwriting with the suicide note of the victim,Manmohan Singh.

The court of the Additional Sessions Judge, Mohali, Rajinder Aggarwal, directed the police to collect the handwriting samples of the main accused Manpreet Kaur and her sister Baljit Kaur and send those to  the CFSL.

The court had pointed out serious flaws in the police investigations during the last hearing in January. The court had also directed the Mohali SSP to probe the matter as two suicide notes were recovered.

The next hearing is scheduled for March 12.

It was learnt that Manpreet Kaur had an illicit relationship with her husband’s cousin, Kuldeep Singh, who is settled in Austria. She, along with her sister Baljit Kaur, had allegedly given the poison-laced soft drink to her husband, Manmohan Singh on the night of June 14, 2006. The police had already exonerated Baljit Kaur on the ground that her name did not figure in the recorded telephonic conversation between Manpreet Kaur and Kuldeep Singh. Manpreet Kaur is in police custody.

Theft at judge’s house

Chandigarh, February 25
A theft was reported at a judge’s residence in Sector 16 today after his domestic help fled from the house with cash and a mobile phone.

The police said that the domestic help identified as Rakesh, a resident of Bhatania village of Parvi district in Bihar, decamped with Rs 70,000 from the residence of the judge. A case of theft has been registered against the accused at the Sector 17 police station.

Two arrested with 2.9kg of charas

Chandigarh, February 25
On a tip off, the Narcotics Control Bureau(NCB), Chandigarh, seized 2.9 kg of charas from a taxi bearing a registration number of Himachal Pradesh, near the PGI bus stop, on late Sunday night.

NCB officials arrested Kamal Kiahor, resident of Rajpura, Patiala district, and Shamurgal, resident of Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh.

Officials said that the contraband consignment is said to be worth of Rs 1.80 lakh in the international market. “Kamal had purchased the seized contraband from Kullu district, which was meant to be supplied to Chandigarh and various places in Punjab”, the officials added.

A case under the NDPS Act has been registered against both the accused.

Earlier this month, NCB had also seized 20.500 kg opium from a truck near the airport roundabout on February 12 and had arrested three persons.

One held on rape charge

Chandigarh, February 25
A rape and another case of attempt to rape were registered by the police in different parts of the city.

In an incident, a man was arrested for allegedly raping a 17-year-old girl on the pretext of marrying her. Accused Istkar allegedly lured the girl from Khuda Ali Sher village a month ago. He called her to his house and then raped her on the pretext ofmarrying her later on. However, he then went back to his native place in UP. The girl’s family called him to the city on the false assurance that the case registered against him would be taken back. As soon he reached the city today, he was arrested by the police. — TNS

A promising Athlete

Upneet Kaur, a hockey player, stood out in the local edition of "Speedstar" talent hunt organised by former international athlete PT Usha.
Twelve-year-old Upneet secured the first position to book a berth in the main edition of the event.

Although she failed to make it to the final event in Mumbai, her efforts helped her scale greater heights.

"I have never participated in any athletics meet. Running barefoot helped boost my confidence. Around 123 tricity schools participated in the event," said Upneet.

She was the youngest participant and was appreciated by PT Usha.

Citing lack of experience the reason behind her defeat, Upneet said it was a great learning experience. "I met PT Usha which in itself is an achievement," said Upneet.

She said, "I have started running under the guidance of hockey coach Alpinder Singh. Apart from being a good runner. My father Arvinder Singh has been a firm support. He looks after my diet and solves my problems," said Upneet.

Upneet, who is a Class VI student, said, "It is very difficult to strike a balance between studies and sports. With my parents' support and guidance, I am hopeful of overcoming every obstacle," said Upneet.

Her coach said, "We have been working on polishing her skills. We never thought that she would bag top honours in athletics. She has a long way to go. She is a hard working girl and her dedication will help her achieve her goal," said Alpinder.

Her father said, "She is doing well, but needs improvement to make it to the top. I hope that she continues to taste success in each and every competition of her life," said Arvinder.

Dept adds five more games to scholarship scheme

Chandigarh, February 25
The UT sports department has decided to add five more games to the sports scholarship scheme from next year.
The events, including baseball, aquatic, equestrian, triathlon and fencing, have been included under the scheme.

Top position holders will be given cash prizes by the UT sports department.

On December 12, last year, it was published in these columns that baseball and fencing should be added to the scheme as these came under the sports gradation policy. “The step has been taken to boost the confidence of sportspersons," said KS Bharti, district sports officer.

The games that are covered under the scheme are athletics, badminton, basketball, boxing, cricket, cycling, football, gymnastics, hockey, handball, judo, kabaddi, kho-kho, tennis, skating, table-tennis, weight-lifting, swimming, volleyball, rifle shooting, rowing, sailing/yachting, canoeing, takewondo, archery, golf, squash, skiing, softball and billiard/snooker. The department invites applications in July every year.

55 caddies slug it out

A Caddie Golf Tournament was organised by the Management of Panchkula Golf Club. The main purpose of the event was to promote golf among the weaker sections of society. A total of 55 caddies participated in two different categories. In Category A, Sudarshan won the top honours with a gross score of 75 while Ram Kishore attained the second place with a score of 78.

Suresh  Veer with a score of 81 finished third in the same category. In Category B, Mukesh took the pole position with a gross score of 79, Tony finished second with the same score and Deepak secured the third spot with a score of 80.

A six-day golf coaching programme will be conducted at the Forest Hill Golf and Country Club from March 19. The programme will be conducted between 5 to 6 pm.
