Let there be light
Renowned installation artist Sheba Chhachhi’s extraordinary visual vocabulary as in moving image light boxes also stems from painstaking research
Nonika Singh

A bird flies on two wings —the conventional truth and the ultimate truth.
— Buddhist wisdom.

This is what gifted installation artist Sheba Chhachhi believes in and understands —to get on in the world, even in the realm of art, one needs to balance the mundane and the profound.

While her works are highly individualistic , there is also an attempt to deconstruct the autonomy of the self by echoing universal concerns. A commercially successful artist who has done the tightrope balance between selling at galleries and finding a space in prestigious museums, she says, "To find a platform for works that are not saleable there has to be something that is commercially viable." If her moving image light-boxes fromYamuna series sold like hot cakes at the India Art Fair for her large photography project, she put in a rider that only public institutions can buy it.

For the artist whose journey began as an activist the lines between activism and art fuse. A staunch feminist, ecological concerns are equally important to her. She elucidates,"Environmental issues are an extension of my feminist beliefs. Patriarchy is about control over a woman's body and mother earth." Feminism is the ground from which she springs and moves to other genuine issues leading to politics of contemplation.

Research is the backbone of her enquiry, often so extensive that only a tip of it reflects in her works. For her work When the Gun is Raised, Dialogue Stops: Women's Voices from the Kashmir Valley she sieved through newspaper clippings dating back to 1942. The trigger for an idea she shares could lie in a newspaper report or in a simple walk around a public library or say a traffic jam.

Research also translates into techonological experimentation. Over the years she has evolved a remarkable technique moving images in a light box. The need to develop this methodology she explains thus, "The quality of attention it commands as it forces the viewer to slow down and look at something that is neither still nor like a video." She doesn't use technology for the heck of it only to impregnate her works with layers. In Rogi Bhogi about genetically modified foods she used gaming technology. As she intends to alter the relationship of viewing she is not satisfied with what she has achieved.

Working on adding a new layer to her moving images ,however it's the last slide The Water Diviner during the lecture at the National Art Week organised by Chandigarh Lalit Kala Akademy that holds the key. As the image of the elephant dissolves and disintegrates…the lesson is self-evident. In reconnecting and re-envisioning lies the beauty and perhaps eternity of art. No wonder art scholar Kavita Singh says, "In times when most artists are following trends, hers is the art of deep engagement." An engagement that is not only sensory but one that invokes the deeper recesses of mind and the heart.

Past forward

When Sheba Chhachhi digs into past be it by way of using miniature works or religious myths like Neel Kanth, the idea she insists is not to be nostalgic or express a lament. Instead, it's to make the past relevant in contemporary times.

Beyond self

Sheba Chhachhi feels that it's our preoccupation with the self that separates us from others, us and the environment and makes us believe that the Tiger we are trying to save is different from the self.

A classic date
Being an artiste, the role of entertainer and educator mingle. Two maestros in their respective fields Shovana Narayan and Pandit Bhajan Sopori are more than that...
Mona

Kathak is to Shovana Narayan what water to fish…her life, passion and soul. Like fresh wind, she wafts through mundane life as she shows up at the Tagore Theatre in Chandigarh on Wednesday evening.

"Kathak is not just physical aspect of my life, but significantly spiritual," she opens up the conversation right after receiving the 9th Guru Madan Lal Koser-Guru Shobha Koser award conferred by the Pracheen Kala Kendra. A flourishing administrative career that she retired from three years back, kathak has been integral to her life. She duly places the credit with her Gurus — Sadhana Bose, Guru Kundanlal and Pandit Birju Maharaj.

Starting at a tender age, Shovana has continued practice till today. "For twelve long years, I have learnt from Pandit Birju Maharaj day in and day out," shares Shovana, whose effort if to pass on the instruction that she received; not just the technicality but also the sensibility.

Her productions have explored themes from mythological to modern, Buddha to Gandhi; how does she pick up a theme to work upon? "I don't pick up a theme, something that I feel passionately about becomes part of the system and then there is a piece that comes right from the soul."

Swami Vivekananda is the fervour of the season, wherever she goes, that is what everyone wants and Shovana is pretty easy with it. "Vivekananda caught attention today; I started working on him about two decades back."

Honours have landed at her doors, including the prestigious Padma Shri; how does that make her feel? "I am elated," she answers, adding, "The sadhana for kathak continues regardless of whether one gets honoured or not!" What makes the recent one special to her is that it is in the name of Madan Koser, a remarkable artiste himself!

Shovana has had her fair shares of challenges, including health issues, but she chose to look at the brighter side instead. "I would be lying if I say I did not get bogged down and spent evenings crying, but I bounced back soon enough. After the brain stroke I lost half of my vision, but I thanked God that I was better than many who are left paralysed."

Her message to youngsters, aspiring dancers and others: "What makes you different from the rest is to have that fire to excel and it falls on parents, teachers and largely yourself to sustain that feeling."

King of strings

Pandit Bhajan Sopori stared rather early. His first santoor recital was at the age of five in 1953. A feat that only he could achieve, after all he is the eight generation musician! Ever since, Pandit Bhajan Sopori has taken art across the world and got recognition for his instrument on the world stage.

From village Sopori in Kashmir, this santoor maestro loves to carry his state on the sleeves. If his village is the proud bearer of his name, Kashmiri kurta, jacket and shawl are a part of his persona.

He gets nostalgic as he recalls the beginning of his career. "There was a rich music scene in the reigns of Bakshi Ghulam Mohammed," says Pandit Sopori, who would often play in Hotel Oberoi's auditorium for film crews that shot extensively in Kashmir.

Success, honours have come to him and he is happy to share that all with his people. Every year, his academy organises a festival in his home state that provides a platform to artistes. Pandit Sopori also gives concerts in jails there. Music is the sound that can affect sensibility, believes this santoor maestro, "People in Kashmir have suffered a lot be it Hindus or Muslims, if there is one thing that can mellow down the pain, it is music."

He calls himself ‘pyar ka product not PR ka’ and is all for the purity of ragas. "Fusion can happen over compositions," says Pandit Sopori, who turned composer in his graduation years for a Kashmiri film. A Sindhi album is next on the cards.

Immensely proud of his disciples, including son Abhay Rustum Sopori, Learning and teaching come naturally to him. The quest for knowledge took him to Washington University, US, where he learnt western classical and has been a teaching assistant as well.

Recipient of Padma Shri, Pandit Sopori is deeply honoured at being the recent recipient of Madan Lal Koser-Guru Shobha Koser Award, "Since it is given by the artistes, the selection is fair," signs off the artiste who is looking forward to doing a thousand things more!

I Me Aur Mein brings Prachi Desai, Chitrangada Singh and John Abraham together for the first time
Jasmine Singh

If you did bear the wrath of Ajay Devgn and Kajol-starrer U Me Aur Hum, then the title of the new John Abraham flick, I Me Aur Main, can scare you. Only when you go a bit further to check out more on this, will you realise John's movie is nothing close to the earlier one. Sitting in a conference room of the Reliance World-9, you can see the three actors, John Abraham, Prachi Desai and Chitrangda Singh, and also debutant director Kapil Sharma share a joke with each other. They look relaxed and ready to take on queries from behind the video on a video calling session.

I Me Aur Main releases on March 1, and has Prachi Desai in a completely sexy avatar. So this one comes for her… Prachi, the bold and beautiful heroine of I Me Aur Main! She laughs, almost blushes and we can see her cheeks turn red. "I couldn't have worn a short skirt and sang songs in Rock On or Once Upon a Time in Mumbai. I always wanted to do something different, and everyone would ask me to do it as well. Perhaps, this is where I am different. Actually, the producer Shristi saw me at one of the parties, she was surprised to see how different I am from the roles I play and offered me this role," she says. Experience of working with Chitrangda? "It was great, we live in the same building, but this is for the first time we get to share screen space together," answers Prachi.

It is Chitrangda's turn now and she is bombarded with questions. Her mentor Sudhir Mishra never approves of her selection of roles? This sure is an unsettling query; but the sultry beauty has an answer. "I approve of it, and I hope that matters." Her answer is short and sweet. The word sweet brings actor John Abraham into the picture. Is it difficult playing a producer or an actor? "Producer," John has some experience to answer that. "It is a thankless job, totally thankless," he adds. Not even when you have pretty girls drooling all over? "I am a vulnerable guy…," he laughs. "I Me Aur Main is a lovely movie, it has quite a lot to offer. However, I am doing other movies like Madras Café as a solo hero.

Star managers

What would any star in Bollywood or anywhere in the world do without his or her manager and right hand man/woman? Every popular and busy star in Bollywood has one who is an essential and integral part of their professional and personal lives. We tell you about the biggest ones.

Hrithik Roshan: Hrithik is very sweet and caring but can also be spaced out and lost sometimes. His right-hand lady is Tanuja Mehra who is very sweet on certain days and can be lost in another world on others, quite like Hrithik.

Kareena Kapoor Khan: Poonam Damania plays a very important role in Kareena's life. She is very level-headed yet caring person and weighs her words. She says all the right things. And keeps befitting company to the Begum.

Saif Ali Khan: His manager is Nazia Ali. She is courteous and polite, quite like the star and makes you comfortable. She does not get perturbed by anything and is like a wallflower. She maintains distance from people and yet treats them right.

Katrina Kaif: She has had Sandhya Ramachandran as her manager since her modelling days. She is very reliable because Katrina is not always in the mood to communicate and she allows few people the privilege of getting to know her well.

Salman Khan: His career and finances have been turned around by Reshma Shetty. She is extremely organised, well-connected and sensitive too. She drew the line where it comes to people taking advantage of Salman in the name of friendship.

Filmy family

I come from a filmy family but was not really exposed to films' shooting when I was growing up. I learnt about the breakdown of shots only during my first film. I want to work with the best and I am happy to be doing another film with Karan Johar and Sajid Nadiadwala and being directed by Imtiaz Ali already. I want to do three memorable roles in the next five years. I want to be proud of my work.

Style quotient

I love to wear stuff that is classy and comfortable. I love shoes and have hundreds of them. Blue and purple are my favourite colours. I like to experiment with fashion and encourage other people as well. Kareena Kapoor Khan is my idol in every way, even fashion-wise and among the men, I feel Amitabh Bachchan is the most stylish person.

Language no bar

In his upcoming film Himmatwala, Ajay Devgn will be seen speaking in five different languages. In a particular scene, Devgn will speak in Bengali, Gujarati, Marathi, Punjabi and Tamil.

Director Sajid Khan confirmed the news and said, "Ajay has spoken in five languages in a particular scene where Tamannaah (the leading lady) gets some goons to beat Ajay Devgn him up. All those guys belong to different regions. One is from Punjab, while the others are from Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Bengal."

"They challenge Ajay to a duel in their own languages and that's when he speaks to them in their respective languages. It's not just a word, it's an entire dialogue," he maintained. Apparently, the actor had to undergo a special training to get the accent and the right tone of these languages.

What an act!

When 11 year old Alisha Sheikh of Mumbai landed up at the auditions of India’s Best Dramebaaz, she had spooky tricks up her sleeve… dressed in white and carrying a pouch of ketchup that she strategically tore into during the climax of her act.Vivek Oberoi

She scared the daylights out of judges Vivek Oberoi, Sonali Bendre and Anurag Basu with her power-packed horror performance. In sharp contrast to Alisha’s spine-chilling act heightened by her wild hair, scary eyes and ketchup-coated lips, what followed had the judges rolling on the floor with laughter. Alisha’s mother who had accompanied her for the audition turned out to be one helluva mischievous mommy. Winking at Vivek, she said she’d fancy a waltz with the Saathiya heartthrob. Being the chivalrous man he is, Vivek couldn’t disappoint the lady. When he went up on stage, however, he was caught completely off-guard by the mommy’s brazen and unabashed style of dancing … as she held him close and danced like it was a chance she’d been waiting for a very long time! While the audience burst out laughing and cheered her on, Vivek was left grinning sheepishly at being “woman-handled”. On seeing all the female attention go to Vivek, co-judge Anurag Basu jokingly teased the mommy about being “partial”! Little did he know that the mommy, in a bid to prove him wrong, will come running off the stage and into his arms and plant a solid kiss on his cheek in full public view. So, this mummy left not one, but two of the three judges of India’s Best Dramebaaz speechless and blushing a beetroot red. Gear up for a deluge of mischievous kids and at times, their even-more-mischievous mummies as India’s Best Dramebaaz premieres on Saturday, February 23 at 9 pm only on Zee TV.

The year ahead
Madan Gupta Spatu

If your birthday is February 22...

This year some very unfavorable conditions will upset you, but losing your faith and neglecting your health will do no good. You need to take extreme care in handling home affairs and matters related to your love life. Before starting anything new in your career, it will be good for you to analyse all the point of views and ask some experienced people for their opinion. Chances are that your old business partnership might break due to dissatisfaction.

The stars indicate that you spend money at a slower pace otherwise it will create a problem. It is definitely not a good or appropriate time to take risk. Consider all the pros and cons before investing your money anywhere. Students need to work hard.

You feel that you have to fight for what you want or believe in and you are very clear, decisive and convincing right now, but you also tend to stir up more controversy or competitive feelings at work than is really necessary. Someone at your office may be disapproving of the lavish spending you’ve been doing on an important project. Be a little more cautious when spending now.

Unexpected developments concerning material resources, which you hold in common with another person (such as a mate or business partner), are likely. Sudden windfalls or reversals are also quite possible, but it is best not to depend upon them because fluctuation and change are the only certainties in this period. Sudden decisions, like selling a piece of property you own, are also likely.

Beware of a tax raid, court or police case from August to November. You’ll use your boundless energy to make things run smoothly and take on an ever increasing list of duties. Youngsters will have a few difficulties, which could lead to less of self-confidence. The stars advise reflecting and then reacting.

Mood: Cheerful.

Compatible signs: Aquarius, Pisces, Leo.

Lucky colours: Silver, Red.

Lucky days: Thursday.

Lucky numbers: 2, 7, 11, 14, 32.

You share your birthday with Sooraj R. Barjatya (February 22, 1965, Mumbai), who made his directorial debut with Maine Pyar Kiya (1989) starring Salman Khan. The movie was a huge hit at the box-office and launched both his and Salman’s careers. He teamed up with Salman again for Hum Aapke Hain Kaun (1994). The stars predict a good year ahead for him.
