Bathinda, February 20 In response to the bandh call, buses of the PRTC and the Punjab Roadways remained off road today, all the nationalised banks remained shut and postal service in the district was hit badly. In Bathinda city, the PRTC employees closed both the entry and exit gates of the bus stand. There are 107 ordinary buses of the
PRTC, 12 AC buses, 10 city buses and 43 km scheme buses under the Bathinda depot. “Only 10 to 12 of these plied in the district today," said PRTC officials. They PRTC employees raised slogans against the government for privatising the government sectors and putting a full stop on hiring employees on contract basis. The president of the PRTC Employees' Union, Preetam Singh, said the wrong transport policies of the state government has jeopardised the future of the government transport sector and benefitted the private transporters. Other unions of PRTC employees also joined the protest. The employees of all nationalised banks took part in the strike. They carried out a rally, which started from the Union Bank of India branch on the Mall Road and culminated at the Fire Brigade chowk. Bank employees said the trade unions had been agitating against inflation. Bank employees demanded that government should stop outsourcing, give jobs on compassionate grounds, fix minimum wages and should not infringe upon the rights of trade unions and others. Meanwhile, the staff of the postal department too observed a complete strike. The staff at the head post office and the city post office along with the employees stationed at 35 sub-offices in the district, including the field staff members, participated in the strike. On working days, the city post office alone registers cash transactions of over Rs 95 lakh apart from handling the postal orders, registries, mail orders and others. The All India Postal Employees Union, the National Union of Postal Employees and the All India Postal Gramin Dal Sewaks Employees joined the strike. The divisional secretary of the All India Postal Employees Union, Makhan Lal Mangla, said the government should ensure strict enforcement of all basic labour laws without any exception or exemption and stringent actions should be taken against the offenders. Members of the Technical Services Union held protests outside their respective offices. The circle president of the union, Satwinder Singh, said rallies were taken out against the Powercom and the state government for introducing anti-employee policies. Apart from these, employees of BSNL, the forest department, medical representatives and others too supported the nationwide strike today. |

Bathinda, February 20 The teenager's brave deed to save Rs 40 lakh cash of the bank and several precious lives on February 10, 2010, has won him several honours. The incident three years ago changed his life bringing him out of a small town in Mansa to the national front. He has been awarded with the Jeevan Raksha Padak by the President of India in 2011 besides various citations and awards at district and state levels. Gurjeevan is being imparted free education at the Police Public School, Mansa. A resident of village Khatriwal near Bareta (Mansa district), he is the youngest among the five siblings. He lost his father at a young age while his mentally-challenged mother works as domestic help in different households. His eldest brother Mangu Singh is a daily-wage earner. The three-year-old incident is still etched afresh in the young mind. He recalls that he used to work for a landlord in Phaphre Bhai Ke village and on the eventful day, he had gone to deliver tea to the bank employees. He saw three men overpowering the bank's guard Jang Singh and snatching his rifle. Seeing that the bank was under threat, Gurjeevan picked up stones and started pelting them at the robbers, who threw stones back at him. One of the stones hit Gurjeevan in his head. In the melee, the bank manager raised an alarm. The villagers gathered at the scene and overpowered the three robbers. |

Rape victim’s baby dies
Bathinda, February 20 An Adesh Hospital spokesperson said the child was referred from the Chandigarh Hospital and had arrived at 7:30 pm. The 28-hour-old baby was facing difficulty in respiration and passed away at 4:30 am. The post-mortem of the body was conducted at the Civil Hospital today. The child's DNA samples and blood samples have been collected as evidence in the case against the victim's stepfather Kala Singh. The Nathana police had booked Kala Singh on the rape charge. The accused is absconding. Meanwhile, all the three nurses — Ramandeep
Kaur, Paramjit Kaur and Khushwinder Kaur alias Khushboo — have been sent to 15 days of judicial remand. The trio was arrested on February 18 for conducting illegal abortion of a rape victim at their clinic in Balla Ram Nagar. |

New IMA body formed
Bathinda, February 20 Psychiatrist Dr Purav Midha has been elected as the senior vice-president while Dr Vipan Aggarwal from Sanjeevni Hospital has been elected as the vice-president. Dr Shital Jindal has been elected the joint secretary. The special invitee at the meeting was the XEN, Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB), Najar Singh Manshahia. He gave a presentation on ways to dispose of biomedical waste and solid waste. The IMA also organized a talk by an oncologist, Dr Anuj Bansal. He spoke of ways to make free drugs available for cancer patients and provide details about the financial aid available from the government. Dr SS Sidhu delivered a lecture on the National Social Security Scheme (NSSS) under which the family of a doctor can get financial aid in the event of his death. President Dr Shiv Dutt Gupta announced that the year 2013 will be observed as "Save Girl Child Year". He appealed to the doctors to send suggestions to make the general public aware about the issue so that steps could be taken to save the girl child. |

Bhangra title for PU, giddha crown for Amritsar
Bathinda, February 20 The singer was performing at a cultural show and competition held to mark the launch of Greater Bathinda project of developers Emerging India and Silver Oaks on the Chandigarh road. The chief guest on the occasion was chief parliamentary secretary (CPS) Sarup Chand Singla. Giddha and bhangra competitions were held on the occasion. In bhangra, the team of the Panjab University, Chandigarh, secured the first position and got a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh. The team of Punjabi University, Patiala, got the second prize while the DAV College team from Jalandhar got the third position. In giddha, the team from the Khalsa College of Education, Amritsar, got the first position, the Government Ranbir College team from Sangrur got the second position while the team of Bhag Singh College, Kala Tibba, Abohar, got the third position. Speaking on the occasion, CPS Sarup Chand Singla said real estate companies are willing to invest in Bathinda and are coming up with their projects. The chief executive officer (CEO) of Silver Oaks Township, Inderjit Singh Brar and managing director, Emerging India, Dr Gurpreet Singh Sidhu, as well as director Harminder Singh informed that the Greater Bathinda project is spread over 50 acres. In the first phase, 17 acres of area is being developed. The first phase has plots of 150, 200 and 250 square yards, where double storey houses would be constructed. They said it is the first-of-its-kind integrated project that has the Adesh Hospital, KFC restaurant, best price wholesale outlet and McDonald's in its vicinity. The project will also have offices, markets, apartments as well as villas. |
Mock joint entrance test to be conducted at Polytechnic today
Bathinda, February 20 The exam will be held on the pattern set by the JET so that the students get a hands-on experience of appearing in the exam. He added that the test will be held in two shifts— from 11 am to 12:30 pm and from 2 pm to 3:30 pm at the Polytechnic College. No fees would be charged for the mock test and the students are not required to bring any documents with them. The students can appear in either of the shifts. The principal said the JET is scheduled for April 7 and the prospectus and form is available in the college for Rs 50. About the scholarship and fee remittance awarded to the needy students, the principal said students belonging to the Scheduled Caste (SC), whose income is less than Rs 2 lakh annually, can get complete fee waiver while the students from the backward classes, whose parents' income is less than Rs 1 lakh per year, will also get complete fee waiver. Students belonging to the minority community including Sikhs, Muslims, Christians and Parsis will also get scholarships from the state government. The students are given fee waiver as per their
academic performance. The first five per cent students of all trades are given full fee waiver while the next five per cent will get a waiver on half their tuition fee. |
Annual function held in school
Bathinda, February 20 Sarpanch Jagtar Singh and members of the panchayat Natha Singh, Baljinder Singh and Kulwinder Kaur were also present on the occasion. A magazine brought out by the children was also released. GKU students build shelter for birds
Bathinda, February 20 The students have hung 10 handmade nests on the branches of the tress on the premises of the university. Amanpreet Singh Sandhu, head of the petrochemical department, said the
average natural rate of extinction of birds is one bird per year. He also informed that in the last 30 years, 21 species of birds have become extinct. To prevent more species of birds from becoming extinct, the students of Guru Kashi University have launched a campaign and other educational institutes will also gradually become a part of it, said

Property dealer dies after falling off from scooter
Bathinda, February 20 Decomposed body found
The decomposed body of a woman was found on the Bathinda-Nathana Road. The body was stuck under the pool over the Sirhind canal near village
Poohli. The volunteers of Sahara Welfare Society fished out the body, which did not have any cloth on it. The body had nothing else to establish its identity, except for two bangles made of iron. Nathana police has registered a case and further investigation in this regard is on. Woman jumps into canal, saved by NGO workers
