Admn for 45% hike in power tariff
Chandigarh, February 18
The Chandigarh Administration has proposed a hike of 45 per cent in the power tariff in all categories. The proposal has been made in the annual revenue requirement (ARR) and tariff petition for 2013-14 submitted by the Administration to the Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission (JERC).

Mahant's Audi Q7 set to don 0001

Mahant Yogi Chhotu Nath (22), the local head of Gorakhnath Math, a religious sect, today bagged the vanity number 0001 for Rs 10,05,100 for his Rs 66-lakh Audi Q7 luxury SUV during an auction of vanity numbers for the CH01 AR series.

Cops track down car thieves after hot chase; 4 arrested
Chandigarh, February 18
Within 30 minutes after a Zen car was stolen from Sector 20 last night, the Chandigarh police recovered the car. It has arrested four thieves, two of whom were nabbed on the spot while they were trying to flee after abandoning the car.

250 structures razed in marble market
Chandigarh, February 18
Using advanced machines and JCBs, the enforcement staff of the Land Acquisition Collector (LAC) today pulled down around 250 structures that had been illegally raised on both sides of the road stretching from Dadu Majra to Sarangpur in the marble market.

MC turns to Dera Sacha Sauda chief

As the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has miserably failed to solve the problems faced by the city residents, it has now started taking the help of religious gurus. With regards to the stray cattle issue, the MC had proposed to take the help of gaushalas being run by organisations of yoga guru Ramdev and religious guru Bapu Aasaram.

Admn in fix over terms 'paying guest', 'tenant'
Chandigarh, February 18
Waking up from a deep slumber, the Chandigarh Administration has started an exercise to figure out the difference between the terms, 'paying guest' and 'tenant'. At the recently held meetings between the senior officials of the Chandigarh Administration, suggestions like "if people who are staying together in a rented accommodation are not relative then it will come under the paying guest accommodation category".

Water supply to be hit in the city today, tomorrow
Chandigarh, February 18
There will be low-pressure water supply during evening hours in the city on February 19 and 20 due to some maintenance work. An official of the municipal corporation (MC) said there was need for replacement of "valves on rising mains, suction-side valves and delivery-side valves" in Phase I and II at the Kajauli waterworks.

Mohali police to work from showrooms
Mohali, February 18
After community centres, now the Mataur Police Station and Mohali Police Lines would be run in the showrooms. The Mohali police has taken two showrooms in the building of Punjab Industries Department in Industrial Area, here, where the Mataur Police Station and the police lines would be shifted in a day or two.

Swine flu claims three more lives
Panchkula, February 18
In yet another swine flu death on the second consecutive day in Panchkula, a Sector 12 A resident today died at a private hospital here this morning. Yesterday also, a resident of the same area had died of swine flu.

Three students injured as bus overturns
Panchkula, February 18
Three school students were seriously injured after the school bus they were travelling turned turtle near Buga-Balauti link road near Barwala. The victims, Rupender, Aman and Vishal were rushed to a local hospital immediately.

Golf Club brawl: Police to record statements of all witnesses

A day after former Olympian Milkha Singh denied his involvement in the case of brawl reported at Chandigarh Golf Club last Saturday, the police said it will record statements of all the witnesses and are also looking for independent witnesses in the case.

342 examined at medical camp
Chandigarh, February 18
SAS Free Poly Clinic Trust organised a free multi-specialty medical camp for the poor and needy rural brethren at their Poly Clinic at Parch village here. During the camp, 17 doctors from various disciplines examined over 342 patients.

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has introduced errors while fixing several existing ones in the biology resource books for classes XI and XII.

University to hike fee soon
Chandigarh, February 18
Panjab University, in a bid to increase its internal resources, has decided to hike the fee for the traditional and the self financed courses. The Board of Finance (BOF) has given the directions to the university to plan the new fee structure. The expected hike in fee will be nearly 10 per cent.

PU plans to restructure curricula
Chandigarh, February 18
Panjab University is thinking of restructuring the curricula by introducing honours school, integrated masters and PhD program. The draft of the concept developed by the university over a period of last six-months has been sent to the University Grants Commission (UGC) for the contest regarding innovative universities of India under which 10 universities with best ideas would be given a grant of Rs 60 crore for five years.

A Class VII student, who was praised for his bravery for raising an alarm after a robber entered his house in Sector 10, Panchkula, failed to identify the accused, following which the youth was acquitted by the local court here today.

A local court today awarded eight years of imprisonment to all five accused in the Barwala brawl. The miscreants were accused of killing a person in a brawl that took place in 2011.

3 held in Dadu Majra murder case

The UT police has claimed to have solved the murder of Rajesh Kumar, a resident of Dadu Majra Colony, who was attacked by assailants with sharp weapons on February 16. The accused succumbed to injuries at the PGI today. Two of the five accused are juveniles.
