Love-ly affair
Loving moments in life leave us with memories to cherish for a lifetime. Here's sharing some of them…
Jasmine Singh

This is just another day when both of them will go out for dinner. She dresses up, nothing special, only adding an extra layer of kohl in her eyes. Both drive down to a restaurant, not talking much. He looks at her admiringly, something she is witnessing after a long time. They take their place on the 'reserved' table. She buries herself behind the menu card and in a split second he is on his knees with a flower in hand -'you are the most precious part of my life.' A moment that gets engraved in the heart forever! Here are some people sharing their special moments with us.

Gift to remember

Ginny Chawla, owner, The Altius HotelThe latest I remember a moment that we all cherished was my wife Archna's birthday. She was under the impression that we would be having a family dinner. I told her that I had a common friend that I wanted her to meet, and there at the hotels rooftop, almost 80 people were waiting to wish her. She sure loved it and I loved the warm and innocent smile on her face.

The surprise element

I have been married to Anjali for eighteen years, but haven't had the chance to take her out on a romantic date because I am generally not in town on our anniversary. This time, I surprised her with an evening dinner. Anjali was suspicious throughout because she wasn't aware of what I was planning for her. This anniversary was special moment for our life.

Stay connected

I was preparing for the Olympics in Patiala, busy with the training and no time for anyone. My wife Archana came to meet me announced. That was such a morale booster for me. She gave me a playstation and an Omega watch. It felt like falling in love all over again. I also quietly handed over a Blackberry so that we could stay connected wherever we are.

Vijender Singh, Olympic boxer

Sun & stars

Four years back along with my wife Shannon, I went to South Africa to a place called St Francis Bay. We took a booze cruise, saw the sunset together. The place and moments of togetherness is what made it so special. We always don't have to talk much to express, sometimes nature and places add their special effects. We still remember that trip.

Angst, anguish & rebellion
Well-known Punjabi poetess Manjit Indira’s book Roh Vidroh is as much an expression of pain as of her dare…
Nonika Singh

Punjabi poetess Manjit Indira is a born rebel, a woman who dares to call spade a spade. Only as she brings out her new book of poetry Roh Vidroh after a gap of eight years, the voice of rebellion is steeped in deep anguish. Pained by the happenings around her, she registers her protest not just against the subservient position of women in society, but other injustices too. Says she, "I am a woman…call me a feminist voice if you wish but that doesn't mean I am not a human being."

So her angst against the political, social and even literary scene in the country finds a vent. On the dark chapter of terror like the Mumbai attack she writes Lagataar bamb dhaamke ret vaang kir gaye jism (continuous bomb explosions and like sand bodies fall down). And more flows in another poem Mein taan saman haan pesh kar reha haan itihaas da syah panna…(I am time presenting the dark chapter of history). In the title poem, she questions the political class with her tongue-in-cheek jibe Public kehde baagh di mooli lok taan kewal votan ho gaye (who cares about the public, votes are all that matters.)"

To the new idealistic politician, many of whom showed promise but frittered away the opportunity to change, she addresses a long poetic lament as well. Indeed, the position of women in modern society pains her no end. The insecurity that gnaws the existence of a woman manifests by way of Dhiyaan zaman taun dar lagda hai (one is mortified of giving birth to daughters.) In a male-dominated society, she feels winds of change will come only if men change their mindsets.

Of course, in the new set of values, she doesn't give a clean chit to the fair sex all the time either. And much before India was shaken by the horrific Delhi gang rape incident and much before item songs came under the media scanner she had written in Antar Dhuni Dhiyaan jad banangeyen item girls, sex bombs (when daughters will become item girls and sex bombs). In one of her earlier books she had even held women accountable for extra-marital relationships. She muses, "Loyalty is not a monopoly of women alone. Just as all men are not bad, so all women can't be good either. Just because I am a woman I can't condone all that the fair sex does."

Similarly, the literary world, of which she is an integral part, too finds censure in her writing. On awards and honours, in particular, she is cryptic and feels it's a business of who aligns with whom. The calibre of writers, however, doesn't dismay her. She lists out many new names who she thinks have great potential.

Indeed, at the end of the day writing in Punjabi she agrees hardly gets you any money, but on the flip side she is happy, "It has given me my identity."

And this pehchaan will gain more ground when she would write her autobiography. All set to put the ups and downs of her life, she laughs, "When I write my life's memoirs, many skeletons will tumble out of the cupboard, many hackles, including those of my near and dear ones, will be raised." But sugarcoat the truth, she won't. Never mind whom she rubs on the way, she will state facts as they are.

Lyrical gems

Writer of over 14 books, including eight compilations of poetry and many translations, Manjit Indira agrees that not all writing is creative or literary. So when poems come to her almost like manna from heaven, she writes it down, shares it with other likeminded peers and only those that get the nod of approval find a way in print. Poetry even khuli kavita has an inner rhythm sans which she feels it loses its essence and beauty.

The business of beauty
Cosmetologist Vijay Dhingra started with a dream. Today, it has blossomed into a line of beauty products
Poonam Bindra

If South India can boast of an entrepreneur Kiran Majumdar Shaw of Biotique fame, we in the North have 'The lipstick lady '- the ever-smiling and graceful cosmetologist Vijay Dhingra, whose brainchild 'Beautyka' has grown from a mere sapling in 1990 to a full grown tree today, which has spread its branches not only all over Punjab but also Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Jammu & Kashmir.

Dhingra looks a demure next-door housewife in Ludhiana, but scratch the surface and we find a very astute and shrewd businesswoman. Being a science graduate and blessed with an analytic bent of mind, Vijay always tried to find the ingredients in various cosmetic products. Her husband's business of chemicals also kindled her interest in the same. While running a beauty parlour at home, she realised the importance of good quality but reasonably priced cosmetics. So, before taking up the initiative, she completed a four-year rigorous training course in cosmetology from Mumbai and a course in beauty therapy from Shehnaz Hussain.

Quizzed on whether she had wanted to emulate the Herbal queen, she affirms "Yes. She is my ideal. The products of Beauty Ka too are totally herbal." Always a very friendly and gregarious lady, she kept her friends as role models and experimented her products on them. Today the range varies from lipsticks in brands like Passion Innocence, Exotica and Tanmaya.

A recent achievement has been the launch of nail polishes under the brand name of 'Beautika Colorz'. "For me the prime aim was to see that the there should be no harmful effects of Beauty ka Products, rather they should be nourishing and beneficial," says Vijay, who also gives lectures and demonstrations in cosmetology in colleges for women.

"Give me a well-equipped kitchen and I will give you a lipstick pronto," states the enterprising lady. Vijay likes to garner and train the women work force for her factory even though she feels that young boys too seem to be interested in this lucrative line. It is a matter of satisfaction and pride for her when she sees the Beautyka products displayed in various shops.

With the entrepreneur's brain still ticking, we can sure look forward to more!

Clean & clear

Sheer Pleasure: Creations by Raj Shroff

Fashion designer Raj Shroff started his label in 2004 and has gone places since then, quite literally. He set off his designer journey from Bengaluru and touched Florida, Milan, London and Colombo. In his spring summer collection at the WIFW, he presented an ensemble dominated by the ivory and ebony. He shares his tips on fashion for the season and tells what he admires Marc Jacobs for.

What’s in

Cut down on the volume of fabric in summer clothes. Prefer structured, basic, clean cuts to fluid, flowy silhouettes, yet keeping the feminine aspect of clothes intact. This is the season to play with transparency. Introduce sheer in parts to the outfits. While wearing skirts, add a sheer lace below the knees. Use nets on sleeves or add depth to the neckline by adding chiffon.

What’s out

Puffed shoulders and sleeves are too dramatic for summer, hence they are out. Embellishment is important but an overdose of it will kill the look. Volume in ethnic or Westerns won’t go with the hot temperature of the season.

Colour count

Summer has always been about pastels, this year it won’t be different too. Monochromatics will be a favourite. Black and white don’t follow any season, they will be flaunted by fashionistas this summer too.

Party couture

Pick a dress or a skirt that accentuates the waistline. Sequins will look good on a party outfit but these shouldn’t overshadow the cut of the dress. Keep it limited to the hemline or sleeve ends.

Dressed to the nines

I admire Priyanka Chopra for her style. She is extremely experimental and knows how to make a fashion statement each time she walks the red carpet. She puts in a lot of efforts to look different but that has never led to a faux pas.

Leading in design

I look upon Marc Jacob for the quirkiness he lends to his designs.

On fashion industry

The best part about our industry is that it aims at the inclusive growth rather than that of only a few. The fashion designers are consistently making efforts to take the industry to the next level. Also important is that we give enough opportunities to budding designers so that they are able to showcase their talent.

Flavours of Italy
Gurvinder Singh

It’s time to relish Italian cuisines as Terrace Grill (Ludhiana) is donning Italian flavours with Vilaggio Italiano food festival.

Garden fresh salads, homemade pastas like gnocchi, ravioli, tortellini tossed in sauces like arrabiatta, aglio olio e, peperocino, boscaiola, carbonara, nasone, bolognese are being served. Pollo picatta, pan seared fish, char grilled lamb loin, agnolotti di agnello brasato add to the Italian experience.

Says Rajinder Sareen, executive chef at the restaurant, “the Italian food is known for its simplicity and a lot depends of the ingredients. We use lot of olive oil, tomatoes, sea food, Italian cheese in the Italian cuisine.”

About 60 varieties of dishes are on the menu for the season, including eight varieties of pastas, about sixteen varieties in main course. The desserts include tiramisu, lemon panapotta, crème brulee.”

“Although some restaurants customise the food according to the palate of Punjabis, but we are presenting the genuine taste of the Italian cuisine through Vilaggio Italiano,” says Umeish Yadav, food and beverages manager, Park Plaza.

Elegance redefined
Bani Seth
Street smart: Bani Seth. photo: Parvesh Chauhan

Here’s a girl who is as confident as cheerful she can be while keeping it dangerously stylish and elegant. Bani Seth was clicked by the Vogue magazine for Ensemble, a fashion house for all Indian brands, and her latest obsession is fashion photography. Currently pursuing her Bachelors degree in SD College, Sector 32, she comes candid with her signature style.

Your sense of style is…

I like keeping it simple and elegant. Rather than pulling off a series of bright shades, I like neutral and dark colours.

Latest addition in the wardrobe…

I just bought a beautiful silver coloured Zara dress for myself.

Brand freak or street smart?

Street smart for sure! I like brands too but street wear is way more stylish.

Choose one—sporty, glamorous or chic?

I would opt for glamorous look because it just sets your style on fire. Besides making you look fancy, glamorous, this look polishes your personality too.

Your style icon?

Sonam Kapoor and Meryl Streep because they look so simple and graceful at the same time. Also, they know exactly how to carry themselves with the clothes they wear.

Who’s the worst-dressed celebrity around?

It has to be Nicki Minaj. She looks hideous in whatever she chooses to wear and I really would not like to advise her sense of style to anyone.

One fashion trend you don’t understand…

I do not know what’s wrong with people wearing those electric coloured pants. They make one look so atrociously loud and shouting for attention.

Your take on accessories…

I think one can never really go wrong with accessories only if they don’t overdo it.

One thing that boosts your confidence…

Mirror, mirror and mirror!

stress buster
Give yourself quality time
Renee Singh

Being busy and remaining that way is a way of life in today’s world. If we are not living our lives at a certain pace we feel left behind. Being busy now days is the rule and not the exception. If you are busy, stressed and not paying enough attention towards it then you are in serious trouble.

Well, have you decided that you want to relieve stress, but can’t figure where or how to begin with? You may think you have made some healthy changes, and then again you are not really sure which ones will work. Here you will find some tips for healthy stress management. All the techniques for healthy stress management sound fairly simple but actually they are extremely effective.

It is always the simple things in life that work the best. We as humans have an unnecessary habit of complicating our lives. Just take a step back and review the larger picture.

Sometimes lives are so busy that there is no time to de stress, however continuously living in a stressful cycle is harmful for our mental and emotional health. Give yourself the time and opportunity to unwind from the crazy patterns of life.

n Wake up ten minutes early each day. Give yourself ten minutes of quality time everyday. Take this time to relax, don’t worry, empty your mind, sit quietly, listen to the birds and music. This will calm your mind.

Deep breathing exercises

Alternate nostril breathing is a good technique, standing in the garden and taking long deep breaths is also a relaxing activity.

Ten minutes of brisk walk

This clears the head, gets the blood flowing, the lungs breathe better. It actually works wonders for you. Longer walks would be great but even ten minutes can help.

Massage

This has the most amazing power to de stress It brings you to the centre of your mind, to relax and be more grounded.

Write positive messages

Think of all positive things in life. Focus and write them for yourself. This is a powerful way of reducing stress.

Perfumes

Spray the scent that you love. Surrounding yourself with fragrance helps in elevating your mood. Aromatherapy is highly recommend for relaxing tired muscles. Learn to use a few bath scents to make it better for yourself.

Eat at leisure

Some people multi-task while eating. Mindful Eating habits are very important. This helps in better digestion and assimilation and brightens your mood.

Listen to your favourite songs

Music always puts us in a happy mood. Our favourite songs lift our spirits and change the pattern of our temperament.

Indulge in creativity

Do whatever that pleases you, whether it is painting or dancing.

Leisure bath

This relaxes your muscles.Washing your face with warm water after a long day cam be relaxing.

Shop till you drop

DLF City Centre mall in IT Park has been decorated to welcome Valentine’s Day as part of the Be My Valentine shopping fiesta on till March 2,2013. The mall has been decked up in red and pink. The main attraction of the fiesta is a mega draw in which a shopper can shop for ~5,000 or above and win diamond jewellery worth ~2.2 lakhs.

Kajol’s got the looks

Kajol has lost eighteen kilos and is looking more gorgeous than ever. Here is how she worked her magic. We do not want you to get into comparison mode but simply want you to be inspired. Keep in mind that she had the resources of time, wealth, domestic help and professional help handy as she underwent her superb makeover.

Fitness trail

Kajol trains for 90 minutes everyday and is very dedicated about that. She is rarely unwell. Her trainer is Shereveer Vakil. They focus on weight and endurance training. Kajol eats five meals a day which includes lots of white meat and salads with olive oil. Her diet is protein and vitamin rich.

Wardrobe wise

The change in Kajol's style is thanks to her stylist Triparna Majumdar. Kajol likes to dress for comfort and glamour comes second. Kajol is an actress so the dresses cannot overshadow her personality and she will not even let that happen. She likes few accessories and likes to experiment with her looks now. Her preferred designers are Sabyasachi, Manish Malhotra and Shantanu and Nikhil.

Keep it fresh

Kajol's make-up is Tanuja Dabir's who highlights her lovely bone structure. She uses orange blush on her cheeks, nose and forehead to give her a fresh look. She uses indigo and green eyeliners instead of black and brown.

Balancing act

Chitrangda Singh is known as Tina to her family and friends in Delhi. This stunning mother of one is unabashedly hot and sexy. She talks about balancing her family, movies and more.

Pursuing passion

For me Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi was just a one-off adventure and then I went back to my normal life and became a mother. For four years, I travelled and shopped and went on vacations. I felt how much more could I travel and shop? I became a mother and for one year my life was all about my son! Then I got out of the bubble and I wanted to make an identity for myself.

Big moment

I remember I was watching The Bridges of Madison County and I was moved by it...all emotions and nuances. I broke out into a cold sweat because I realised that is what I wanted. I wanted to feel all those emotions and then I got into acting again. In fact, Niharika Khan's friend in Chandigarh tracked me down and got me back in touch with everyone here.

Right man

My husband Jyoti is very understanding and supportive. I have known him for half my life. He is following his golfing dream and he knows what it is like to have an ambition, a dream and a passion. He was supportive of me deciding to act because he and my family knew I had given a lot of thought into it.

Sonny dearest

My son is being raised by my mother and my father in Delhi. He lives an insulated life. He needs to know me as a mother first and an actress when he grows up. He likes playing golf. His latest thing is holding his breath for the longest time under water. He likes swimming too. My husband and parents like that at least one of us is there for our son growing up.

Two lives

I am Tina in Delhi and Chitrangda in Mumbai. They are two separate lives and I switch over quite easily. I am happy with two separate lives because the different worlds do not really understand each other. My life is not perfect. I do not claim to be a superwoman who manages everything perfectly. I love cinema and I also love my family. I know my priorities and am working likewise.

Ranbir Kapoor turns producer!

In a bid to emulate his grand dad Raj Kapoor, we have been hearing that Ranbir Kapoor has been toying with the idea of producing a film.

Now, here comes the news that the actor has taken the first significant step in that direction. The actor, who is gearing up for Anurag Kashyap-led Phantom Productions' ambitious project Bombay Velvet, has decided to come on board as a co-producer for the same.

"Innovative content excites me and I believe the Phantom team is a pioneer at it. This seems to be the perfect time in my career to take up bigger ownership of a film and turn a producer," said Ranbir.

Vikas Bahl of Phantom Productions observed, "As a team we realised his inputs to the script is much more than an actor's. He looks at the bigger picture, the scope of the film beyond his role. And that is when it occurred to us that it would be great to have him play a part in the production as well."

Bombay Velvet, based on historian Gyan Prakash's Mumbai Fables, is the story of how the city became a metropolis against the backdrop of love, greed, violence and Jazz music.

The film, that is a part of a trilogy that aims at recreating Bombay of the 50s, 60s and 70s.

Freedom of expression

As finally the dusts of controversies settle around the movie Vishwaroopam, Kamal Haasan is a visibly relieved man. The movie was banned by the Tamil Nadu government on the context that the movie contained certain scenes which would hurt the sentiments of the Muslim community.

The film fraternity and the media completely supported the actor against his lonely fight against this bureaucratic attack on freedom of expression. Specially, the movie was cleared by the censor board and released all over India without any hitch; it was only in Tamil Nadu where it faced such a problem.

Kamal Haasan was under huge financial pressure as he was the producer of the whooping INR 95 crore budget film. The actor claimed that he stands to lose his house to pay the loss and resettle in a place which is truly secular.

Among all the hues and cries, the chief minister of Tamil Nadu stepped in and arranged for a dialogue between the representatives of Muslim community and the actor. In the meeting the actor agreed to mute few of the dialogues in the movie. Following the successful meeting, the TN government removed the ban on the film. A happy Kamal Haasan stated that his 'Freedom of expression was intact.'

The fans were also anxious to catch the movie of their favourite hero. Vishwaroopam opened to packed houses on February 7. The fans garlanded the posters of the actor and poured milk on them. It is reported that few of the movie halls started showing the movie from six in the morning to meet the viewer's demand.

An elated Kamal Hassan expressed himself with the words, "Thank you India. Thank You Tamil Nadu. See to it that artistes like me don't get into trouble again."

Nandish Sandhu aka Aditya from Phir Subah Hogi loves to travel and here he shares his experience of places he loved the most.

Genting Highlangs, Malaysia– High up in the mountains this tourist spot is exceedingly beautiful. Different kind of people and beautiful view make it a great holiday spot.

Khatmandu, Nepal- Nepali people are hardworking and warm. The casino culture and the beauty of the place looks pretty much like a European country.

Mathura– The temples and the culture of the place exude a soothing aura and has the charm that is typical of Lord Krishna. I do not believe in going to temples, but when I went to Mathura, it felt so nice. Vancuover, Canada– I simply love the colour changing forests, especially during spring. Its amazing to look at the way leaves change. It id definitely one of the most beautiful places I have seen.

Mumbai – I love Mumbai, its culture, energy, the pace of the city and the way people are so upfront. Also the fact that people do not bothered about others as they are so busy in their own lives.
