Age no bar
What's the big deal if yesteryears beauty queen Zeenat Aman is all set to tie the knot with someone half her age? That's how love has always been; it has forced people to do the most impossible of things; it is a rule-breaker and obstinate, yet it puts up the charade of being innocent and beautiful. It might be blind but it's certainly not dim. It often throws up interesting cases, giving us matter to ponder upon, like this particular one — can there be enough compatibility between an older woman and a much younger man, especially in the Indian context? And can the Indian society stick to its claim of being modern by accepting such couples who don't follow the usual norms?
Examples of an older man younger woman abound though, most recent one in the celebrity circle being Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor, Sanjay Dutt and Manyata (19 year gap is not less), Dilip Kumar and Saira Banu, but the examples of ones like Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher (though they aren't together now) are not many. Deepshikha, a mother of two married Keshav Arora, who is younger to her, doubts if the society can sportingly accept such changes. "Our so-called modern set-up conveniently uses the cultural ethos as its shield when it can't support a marriage that doesn't abide by the social rules." The definition of being liberal, she says, is only limited to letting women study and work but when it comes to her personal choices and emotions; there isn't any respect for that. She did face a lot of objections to her marriage and even her parents didn't approve of the same. "When I can earn my own bread and feed my children, I am not answerable to anybody." While the guessing game as to who Zeenat Aman is marrying has begun, how many bothered how she lived her life all these years or for that matter who took care of her? Though nobody had the courage to question Archana Puran Singh when she married Parmeet Sethi, who is seven years younger to her, she always knew that people around had an objection to the same. "They feared that the marriage might not work. But is the divorce rate zero when it comes to same age couples or in ideal matches, wherein the boy is older than the girl?" Even if age matters, it's just one of the smaller issues that a couple has to deal with in marriage. "When two individuals stay under a roof, difference of opinion is natural. Age then becomes a minor issue." As for Zeenat Aman, Archana says that if Zeenat has decided to marry somebody at this age, when she has the experience of life, she wouldn't have taken a wrong decision. A couple of years of age gap in couples have in fact been readily accepted by people. Nobody talked about Tina Ambani and Anil Ambani or Aishwarya and Abhishek Bachchan. "Five years of gap takes time to digest although I fail to understand that," Deepshikha adds while quoting example of Anjali and Sachin Tendulkar, and Tanaz and Bakhtiyar Irani. In stark contrast to how people deal with reality, there are instances when the idea of older woman and younger man making a couple has been welcomed on the reel. Dil Chahta Hai's Akshay Khanna and Dimple Kapadia's sub plot was applauded by critics. So was the show, 12/24 Karol Bagh, which showed eight-year gap between the female and the male protagonist. Smriti Kalra, who played the lead Simi in the show, says it earned TRPs because it managed to offer a love story to the audience, which broke stereotypes. "For it to get replicated in reality, it will take time since India resides in the villages and small towns." Till then, Archana and Parmeet Sethi, Deepshikha and Keshav can serve as the right example to be hopefully followed by Zeenat Aman and her mystery man! ashima@tribunemail.com

Healing touch
Thoughts wield immense power is what we have heard and read all along. Not all, however, have tapped their potential. Baljit Amarjit Singh was diagnosed with severe osteoarthritis in 2005 and as many as six leading doctors in the field recommended total knee replacement for her.
Not sure of this line of treatment, Baljit made a conscious decision to heal her own self! She enlisted whatever help she could from doctors from different lines and set on path to cure her own self. Seven months on, from her almost bedridden status, she has resumed her regular routine — teaching in the school, running around errands, managing household chores and more. What followed is I Can, You Can! Resurrection, a book that recounts her healing process. Her book met with a good response and on numerous queries she has got the book reprinted. "When my book first came out, many people suffering from this came to me share their experiences. I was surprised to find people as young as in their 20s suffering from osteoarthritis. That further fuelled my resolve to reach out to as many as I can." In her early seventies now, Baljit still leads an active lifestyle. I teach, cook, clean, knit, paint and read," she shares. In fact, it's books where she finds inspiration when she most needs it. "You Can Heal Your Life by Louise L Hay and Left for Dead by Dick Quinn have been hugely motivating," she says.Thought holds enormous power. "If only are we aware of the surroundings and train our thoughts towards the positive, we can surely turn life around!" she signs off.

One-stop wonder
Impressive stalls from some 100 companies open the 16th Inside Outside Mega Show at the Parade Ground-17, Chandigarh. You will get here stuff from taps to tiles and everything in between!
A quick round of the pavilion and one is pleasantly surprised at the host of options available. If window films are not only incredibly beautiful and spunky, there is a range of stuff that shows how glass can be adapted to the interiors or the exteriors of a building. Cooking ranges, bath showers, solar panels, building materials, fancy tiles, wall claddings and furniture, this show offers this and much more. Having already received an enthusing response from cities like Ahmedabad, Surat and Mumbai, the show organisers are looking forward to its Chandigarh stint. "From our earlier shows, we know that the city crowd fancy the latest in any field and ours is the endeavour to provide the best of that," says Anup Sachdeva, local coordinator for the show. He is quite looking forward to visits from architects and interior designers from all over the north region. Keeping in mind the shift towards 'ethnic', there are stalls to cater to that as well as the most modern in leather with tie-ups from Italy. What stole our heart was this incredibly beautiful Plantae Paradise stall that has on offer plenty of greenery to choose from - hanging gardens, beautiful blooms, driftwood medley, dish gardens and more! Amarjot Kaur You might want to spare an awful lot of objectivity that emerges out of the need to maintain a monthly budget when it comes to beautifying homes, however, passion for beauty needs no evaluation of the heavy price tag and everything that comes along with it. The Interior Show, a four-day long exhibition at Himachal Bhawan, does a fair deal of justice to the saying that a thing of beauty is a joy forever. If you've been aching to redo your home with the ever-evolving taste of aesthetics, walk right though the venue and you shall be more than just comforted. Behold the sight of the Belgium silk carpets with an intricate Persian mosaic or the contemporary shaggy carpets; there is indeed a lot to choose from within the range of Rs 3,500 to Rs 65,000 if you want to cover the bare floors of your house. Meanwhile, time your thoughts and splash them across the walls of your house with a variety of clocks straight from Jodhpur. Essentially made out of wood, these exquisite clocks are coated with brass. If the time is in your favour, you might want to fancy a railway clock that is priced at Rs 1,600 or, if you appreciate the arty flair of Jodhpur, pick up a hand painted clock for Rs 3,500. If you are keen on accentuating your garden or veranda with a set of outdoor furniture, bag your pick from the collection that starts at Rs 2,000. Also, a series of bed sheets and bed covers in silk and cotton with patch work and embroidery are quite a catch for Rs 750 to 13,000. A whole lot of doormats and tablemats along with napkins and dining accessories are available at the exhibition. Talking about dining, there's nothing that makes the food look better than a fancy set of crockery and a stylish host always keeps it fashionable. The metal-based crockery is priced at a judicious Rs 200 to Rs 12,000. Some of the most distinct stalls exhibit a series of unusual work. The showpiece stall has a wide range of items, including paintings, Buddha, antique guns, mosaic clocks and fountains. Also, another ethnic stall featured the profound work of Jodhpuri art in different items. However, the antique shop, Fatima Naaz Décor, takes the cake and wins the battle hands down while featuring a replica of the Taj Mahel, which was found at Rampur by Mohamad Zubir's grandfather. The stall also features a series of exquisite locks, telescopes, binoculars, compass and hookas. For those who believe in tarot cards and Vastu, Maayaa, a city-based tarot reader and numerologist, has set up a stall and she might pull a few cards that may surprise you. (On till February 11) |

first-day-first show
Any Body Can Dance
Any Body Can Dance is the first of its kind in India that's released in 3D. Directed by director and choreographer, Remo D'Souza, and produced by Siddharth Roy Kapur the movie stars Prabhu Deva and Ganesh Acharya in key roles. The participants of Dance India Dance also essay central characters. The film is releasing in Tamil titled as Aadalam Boys Chinnatha Dance. Dance & drama I like the movie. The biggest strength of the movie lies in the variety of dances that Remo presents. There are a several knockout sequences in the film too. Sagar Bhatia, BTech Student at SVIET Engaging feat I think that the film was a little stretched towards the end. However, the closing portions and the dance competition in the finale are exceedingly engaging. Also, Prabhu Deva was simply awesome. Nikhil Hans, Student at Shishu Niketan School Great moves Prabhu is, expectedly, incomparable in dances and he handled the dramatic scenes very well too. Also, Kay Kay was seen essaying his part effortlessly and brilliantly. Ganesh Acharya plays a significant role very efficiently. Neha, Student of SD College
Special 26 Special 26 has been directed by Neeraj Pandey of A Wednesday fame. The lead actors of the film are Akshay Kumar and Kajal Aggarwal, while Jimmy Shergill, Manoj Bajpai and Anupam Kher are seen in the supporting roles. The film is based on a real life group of con artists who pulled off many clever robberies during the 1980s, and robbed famous businessmen and politicians by pretending to be the CBI or Income Tax officers. On the pretext of conducting raids, they would take all the black money hoarded by them, the film also takes its concept from the real-life daring heist dated 19th March, 1987 where the same group posing as CBI officers executed a daylight income tax raid on the Opera House branch of Tribhovandas Bhimji Zaveri in Mumbai, and disappeared with jewellery worth lakhs. Twists & turns The highlight of the movie is the last-minute surprise twist. I loved Manoj Bajpayee's star turn. Also, the pre-climactic scene between Bajpayee and Anupam Kher is remarkable. I would watch the movie yet again! Natasha Bahlvi, Student of Ryan International School Thought provoking Akshay Kumar stands up to the challenge without any effort and Jimmy Shergill is splendid. Special 26 truly special and I really appreciate the underlying patriotic note that the film has catered to. It really makes us think seriously about our country's situation. Bhavika, BCA Student of Chitkara University — As told to Amarjot Kaur

Ornamental value
Satish Narula When Chandigarh was born, the city was lucky to have Dr M S Randhawa as its first chairman of the Landscape Advisory Committee. A passionate horticulturist, he introduced many species in this city, both indigenous as well as exotic, not however, disturbing the local groves of fruit trees and other indigenous species. Some of the exotic species introduced in the city established themselves making Chandigarh their natural abode. Some of the city flora has, however, not received as much attention as it should. One of the most attractive ornamental plants is Erythrina crista-galli. The name no doubt is a tongue-twister but this is one of the best ornamental trees growing near the main fountain in the Rose Garden. A few trees were later introduced near the back entrance to the Terrace Garden in sector 33. The tree grows to a height of about 15 to 20 feet. The trunk and branches have their own structural beauty and the tree is a picture spot for tourist due to their blooms when in flowering and due to corky artistic stem and branches when it sheds leaves. The flowers are brick red and appear in bunches. Looking at the ease with which it grows, it should form more frequent planting in city gardens. The watering requirement of this tree is also less. It is easy to propagate by way of cuttings. Another towering 'personality' in the rose garden is Taxodium. This columnar tree has also made this region its abode and stands tall near the fountain in the Rose Garden. The tree grows straight up and may go up to 40 feet or so. It hardly has any spread and grows within 10 to 15 feet across. The compound leaves of this tree are very small and imli like. It is a slow-growing tree. It is because of the miniature leaves and slow growth rate it has won the favour of bonsai freaks. (Narula is a senior PAU horticulturist) |

Cut above the rest
If hair styling did not have much to contribute to the complete look, veteran actor Sadhana's name wouldn't have preceded a cut; Madhuri Dixit's perms wouldn't have made girls rush to the beauty parlours, Aamir Khan's crew cut wouldn't have replaced Sanjay Dutt's long hair
In the West too, Rihaana has a cut to her name, the association is so strong that even after Riri has stopped sporting it, she makes the style popular! Kate Middleton's Chelsea Blowdry has already been declared the most iconic hairstyle of 2012. "You still undermine the importance of a hair styling; get a shoddy cut and you will know," comes from Rod Anket, who will be seen playing a mentor on the Zoom channel's reality show A Cut Above. He shifted his base from Australia to India four years back and has understood the dynamics of the hair styling market of the country in this period. "Like most of the other industries of India, youngsters drive this one too. They follow fashion, set the trends and experiment. They closely observe their role models from Bollywood and cricket and imitate their style." But at the same time, the youth of India, he says, does not take to fashion blindly or without implying logic. "Had that been the case, a fashion faux pas would never have been distinguished from what makes one look fashionable." The preference of women changing from long hair to short, manageable hair, he says, defines the change in the mindset of people. "Somehow cropped hair for women has become the symbol of their individuality, of the fact that they are earning bread and in that case one doesn't have the time to take care of a long mane," adds Rod, whose clientele includes names like Deepika Padukone, Arjun Rampal, Tina Ambani, Kylie Minogue, Anjelina Jolie et al. In the show, A Cut Above, he will educate aspiring hair stylists to break away from the stereotypes. Indians aren't still very experimental when it comes to cuts or colours, which poses a challenge for a hair stylist to give his client a different yet safe look. "One has to understand what a client wants and then give a cut. Experimentation shouldn't be introduced at the cost of annoying a client. Subtle changes, however, can make a lot of difference."

Iconic address
You love your Bollywood stars and most of them reside in suburban Mumbai. We tell you who lives where!Shah Rukh Khan Shah Rukh Khan lives in a palatial mansion called Mannat which is pretty much in the middle of Bandstand in Bandra and his house faces the sea. He has also built a building behind his bungalow. Fans from different parts of the world come to check out his mansion and even hope to meet him. There are huge crowds around his house and police vans on his birthday and festivals like Eid where he waves out to his fans and sometimes steps out too. Salman Khan The star's residence at Galaxy Apartments at the beginning of Bandstand in Bandra is one of the most crowded places at any time of the day. There are fans, who wait for a glimpse of him. Don't even ask what happens after movie releases and during birthdays and festivals! Police patrol the area outside his house to control the crowd. Ranbir Kapoor He currently lives at Kapoor's at Wits End in Pali Hill and this bungalow was formerly called Krishna-Raj. It is an iconic address in Bandra, suburban Mumbai. Ranbir has a floor to himself and he also owns a party pad in a building at Hill Road which is 10 minutes away from his place. Shahid Kapoor The star lives all by himself in a plush apartment at Raj Classique in Yari Road. His father Pankaj Kapur lives with his family on another floor. The apartment complex is very fancy and his flat also has a view of the sea and mangrove trees. Priyanka stays in the same building but she is planning to move out to a bungalow in Juhu.
Moving on a Special plane
Anupam Kher is one of Bollywood's contemporary legends. He is now seen in Special Chhabbis. He has just come back from the SAG Awards. He was nominated for the Silver Linings Playbook. His Hollywood film has also been nominated at the Academy Awards. He talks about movies, new directors and more.
Mature take Neeraj Pandey has become mature after four years. You will see a clear distinction between A Wednesday and Special Chhabbis. The former is about terrorism and the latter is about what is real and what is not. He has the command over both, subject and movie. He is way beyond his years and a pleasure to work with. No direction As of now I am not directing any movie because am very busy. I have films, related events and promotions, and then I am running a film and acting school. I am also writing my next book. I need a year to direct a movie. So unless I get a mind-blowing script, I am not directing as of now. New directors I like working with new directors because they have a certain josh in them. I have worked with accomplished directors in their first movies like Aditya Chopra in DDLJ, Dibakara Banerjee in Khosla ka Ghosla, Ayan mukerji in Wake Up sid and Karan Johar in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. There talent is raw and they have a lot of passion for their work because there is only one first film. Selection theory I look for a variety of factors when I take up a movie. Sometimes I like the script, sometimes the director, sometimes both. I enjoy connecting with people I have worked with over the years and forged some bonds. I like the comfort level I share with many people in the industry. And sometimes I do a movie for money. Hollywood vs Bollywood I think in Hollywood, there is a method of working and lots of professionalism. There is uniformity in language which is not there over here. Over there, you have to have certain qualifications to get into the film line. Here, anyone becomes an actor of he looks good or bad and anyone becomes a producer if he has money. I think we are achieving a level of professionalism now.
One for buddyhood
Ranbir Kapoor likes working with his friends. After working with buddy Ayan Mukerji in Wake Up Sid! and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, he has said yes to a film to be directed by his school friend Vicky Singh and it will be his friend's directorial debut. The film has been titled Roy and Ranbir will play a thief named Roy. The film has space for two heroines and Jacqueline Fernandez will be one of them and this will be a fresh pairing. Bhushan Kumar is producing the movie which is an absolute crowd-puller. The film also stars Arjun Rampal as a filmmaker. Vicky Singh says, 'The film is an unabashed crowd pleaser with lots of masala, action and drama. We will shoot a majority of it abroad.' Vicky Singh quit his banking job in America to assist Farhan Akhtar in Lakshya. He has been trying to get into direction for a while now. He was supposed to make a movie with Ranbir and Deepika which did not work out and then the couple broke up. So, Vicky has revived his project and has been careful this time. He has not cast Ranbir's rumoured current girlfriend Katrina Kaif in it because their relationship status cannot be predicted. He is playing it safe with Jacqueline and one more heroine will be cast in it. Ranbir has played grounded and different characters in his movies like Rockstar, Barfi!, Raajneeti, Wake Up Sid!, etc. and now he is ready to play a larger-than-life character in Roy. The film rolls once he wraps up shooting for Besharam.

Lots of support from the south for my telegu debut - thanks guys!! Really looking forward to it... Feels like dabangg dejavu - debut with superstar, script I couldnt refuse, capable and intelligent director! Aamir gets candid
Aamir Ali who has been busy shooting for two shows has now quit them and signed a new one. He spills the beans...
Rumour is that you have quit both the TV shows Honge Juda Na Hum and FIR. Is it true? Yes, I am no longer doing them but the decision was amicable and mutual. What happened in Honge Juda Na Hum ? My role was supposed to be a cameo; I was to stay in the show only for a while. Later, I was told my role was being appreciated so I stayed on. Now, the show is taking a leap and I am not part of it. FIR was a show which was a novel genre for you. Comedy was something I had never done before and it was fun to do FIR. It is close to my heart and I enjoyed it. But the show will see some changes so I opted out of it. You have signed on Jhilmil Sitaaron Ka Aangan Hoga a show that is already on air. Aren't you worried about the low TRPs of the show? I am looking at this show as a re-association with the Barjatyas. The Rajshri group has been wonderful to me and I had done their earlier show Woh Rehenwali Mehlon Ki. Your wife Sanjeeda Sheikh left Sahara One's show and now you have joined it? Such a coincidence! But I am happy that I will be working with Barjatyas again.
Clean & clear
After gauging their success in being the pit crew for the Himalayan Car Rally test drive, our Raeeszade faced their first termination in Big Switch 4.
The necessity list for the Raeeszade is a never ending one, after sleeping on rocks and waking up to a freezing cold in Shimla, the Raeeszade had a shocking day ahead of them for getting another necessity into their tents- pillows. And in order to get this necessity, the Raeeszaade had to fight it out at yet another job at hand. More than bodyache; the psychological switch to making themselves actually do the jobs was getting more difficult.
