Cabinet meet today
: The Cabinet meeting of the Punjab Government, scheduled for Tuesday, will take up the issue of constituting fast-track courts to try rape cases in all districts of the state. 

Govt forms panel to procure supplies: To streamline the system of procuring raw material and office supplies, the state government has constituted three sub-committees under separate heads to avoid overlapping of work. A circular of the Department of General Administration addressed to all the financial commissioners, principal and administrative secretaries stated committees had been formed for infrastructure projects, supplies and material, machinery and equipment and IT systems.

YAD leader booked for firing at girl
: The police has registered an attempt to murder case against a Youth Akali Dal (YAD) leader, Jagmeet Singh, for allegedly opening fire at a female member of a dance troupe. The accused allegedly dragged the girl from her vehicle and when she resisted, he fired at her. The police have also recovered the pistol, which was registered in the name of the accused’s father, who has been arrested.

Man kills mother, injures father
: Sarabjeet Singh of Kaniya Kalan village in Shahkot allegedly hacked his mother Kulwant Kaur to death and injured his father Santokh Singh on Monday. Sarabjeet assaulted his parents with a sword after they refused to give him money to settle abroad. The accused has been arrested.

5-yr-old raped by distant relative
: A five-year-old girl was raped by a distant relative at her home here on Monday. The profusely bleeding child was taken to the Civil Hospital by her parents where the doctors referred her to the PGI. The police has arrested the accused, Manoj Mishra (20).

10 years’ RI for raping teenager
: Sunil Kumar, 21, from Sunam, was awarded 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment and fined Rs 1,000 by Additional Sessions Judge Virinder Aggarwal for raping a 14 years’ old girl. The convict was a tenant in the house in which the girl resided. On the pretext of getting her a job, he took the girl to Patran on April 13, 2012 and raped her.

Chd Club to pay Rs 12.34 lakh per month: The UT Administration has finalised the lease amount of the Chandigarh Club at Rs 12.34 lakh per month. At present, the club is paying Rs 1.5 lakh per month. The lease had expired in October 2010. The amount has to be paid with retrospective effect. 

35 shanties removed: The enforcement wing of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation today removed 35 unauthorised shanties from the Dadumajra colony. The enforcement team, along with staff of Medical Officer, Health, MC, removed 35 shanties from Mandi Ground, Sansi colony and Dadu Majra colony with the help of 2 JCB machines and police force. The drive was carried out peacefully.

Boy found dead on track: A boy (17) of Colony Number 4, who had been missing from his house for the past two days, was found dead near the railway track in the Industrial Area here last night. His father Prem Kumar Shukla had lodged an FIR (kidnapping) with the local police on February 2. 

Cancer awareness walk organised in Chandigarh: More than 300 enthusiasts, a majority of them college students, participated in the “Swift Walk Towards Cancer Awareness” organised by the Swift Group of Colleges in association with Ind-Swift to mark World Cancer Day here today. The walkathon, aimed at creating general awareness and disseminating information about various types of cancer, symptoms and preventive measures among the masses, was flagged off from the Mini-secretariat, Sector 9, and it concluded at Sector 17 Plaza. Students enacted a play focusing on the early detection and cure of cancer. A human chain was also formed.

Army jawan dies of cardiac arrest
: An Army jawan died of cardiac failure in Rajouri district late last night, the police said today. Hatinder was a resident of Jagger district of Rajasthan and was posted as a signal man in 13 sector of the Manjakote area, sources said. Army personnel immediately informed the police station concerned. The police took his body for a postmortem.
