A young dream
If you have ever dismissed a twelve or a sixteen-year-old as a kid or you were about it, just sit back and roll your eyes over this. Chandigarh-based, 16-year-old Karuna Singh excitedly and pretty much professionally handles the stage, answering the questions thrown at her from left, right and centre. The pretty and young eleventh grader has won Gladrags Little Miss India title. She had won the Little Miss India Punjab in 2012 and then represented Punjab at the finals held in Mumbai in 2013.
In case you have forgotten by now, Karuna is 16, but the confidence blanket around her is amazing. Flashes of an innocent child who is thrown into the big world of glamour touch Karuna's face. But she guards herself with her only tool, confidence. "I always wanted to be a Miss India and this is like the best moment for me," chirps Karuna while striking a pose. Oh, the girl can intimidate any professional model! So, where does this poise and all the low-down on modelling comes from? The reply we quiet expected! "My mother," she smiles, "my mother is pretty much aware of the fashion scene. She picks up my costumes and guides me in the right way," adds this non-medical student who dreams of walking back with a Miss World Title one day. The word confidence can take anyone places! It can add length to your attitude and even cut you to size. "I guess what made me stand out from the rest of the contestants was my confidence," she adds. Karuna likes the poise and grace of Sushmita Sen and Priyanka Chopra. So would she like to sign movies? "Why not if I get good offers, but I want to study first," she answers innocently. Just when we give that 'what' look to the little girl, we are taken in by her maturity. What was the final question that decided her victory? "I was asked whether a twelve-year-old can fall in love." I replied, "No, a twelve-year-old cannot fall in love because they are not mature enough. It can be an infatuation but not love," Karuna oozes maturity. Infatuation, you know what that is? She laughs, "They asked me the same question and I answered," she winks.

It makes sense
The film has to begin and end with the eternal theme — love. If the director decides to pour in creativity, you can expect something different like theme politics but this again is heavily impregnated with dollops of love and mushy songs. So, for the first time a bunch of seven school-going kids are brought on screen through the Punjabi movie Stupid 7. School-going, you would probably want to turn to another counter and buy tickets for something more mature, mushier! We thought you could do with some advice. Grab a ticket and settle in to watch Pali Bhupinder Singh's Stupid 7, it would probably take you down to your own school days. You might also find yourself calling your old school friends from the theatres.
Stupid 7 is Pali Bhupinder Singh's debut directorial venture that is based on various incidents that the seven main characters (each character's name starts with the alphabets of the word Stupid) go through at school and home — a regular topic that has been treated well by the director. Something other than Punjabi loud romance is a welcome change! The film is handled by seven characters and each one has justified their character. They are all school kids and they look like them. Their tantrums, dilemmas, hopes and aspirations are something each one of us has experienced. The director has tried his best to not go overboard with anything and let them be treated as school-going kids. So no flashy clothes, no foreign locales, love songs and no dishum-dishum over a girl. There is no Student Of The Year in this for all students are equal! The film has been packed with good punches that genuinely make you laugh. But for a generation of audiences that has lived on the 'chai lassi' and dinner of romance as well as violence, whether it is the campus of a University in Punjab or outside, this could be a one-time watch. Every character played by the young actors of Stupid 7 is well-etched. So if Sahib is a Punjabi munda tricking her mother into buying him a laptop by threatening to cut his hair is your pick, the wannabe singer Parry walks away as a dude who doesn't want to be an engineer. Stupid 7 does not see many popular faces like we are used to watching in Punjabi movies. Actor Gugu Gill plays a father and is just like what he is — threatening on screen! Jaswinder Bhalla, as always, is a treat for the facial nerves with his funny dialogues. If there is something that's missing, it is the music. It is fun and foot-tapping, but somewhere we miss the beats of Punjab. Voices of singers Ashok Masti and Harshdeep Kaur manage to lift your spirit a bit, but it all settles down almost immediately. If you want to walk the memory lane of your school days, you can ask the Stupid 7 to assist you! jasmine@tribunemail.com

Real life on reel
Kuljinder Sidhu can now sit back and relax. His dream project will finally hit the theatres, which means his 'believe in honesty' and realistic cinema is not tampered with. The controversial Punjabi movie Sadda Haq finally gets the clearance from the Censor Board with a 'U' certificate from the Film Certification Appellate Tribunal.
The writer, producer and actor Kuljinder Sidhu is the man of the moment. "Even I am surprised, our film got a 'U' certificate. This means that there was nothing wrong that I was trying to depict through the movie. The 20 objections raised were rejected by the highest authority of the Censor Board and now the film will hit the theatres on April 5," says Kuljinder, who is now eager to see the response from the audience. Sadda Haq depicts the incidents in the life of a sportsman who is forced to pick up arms and how he adopts an ideology with time. "I have always been a big fan of realistic cinema. I liked Bandit Queen and now the kind of movies Anurag Kashyap makes," he adds with renewed energy. The movie has been directed by Mandeep Benipal. Kuljinder, however, will not let anything affect his thinking. "I am writing another movie based on a real-life incident. Only this time I would be a little more careful," he laughs.

Tea off
"There is nothing as soothing as a cup of tea in the morning," says Radhika Sharma, who wakes up to the warm aroma each morning. "Now I take green tea as bed tea, rather than normal tea," she adds. The vapour billowing from the cups and the quiet sips are getting more ubiquitous in homes and cafeterias. The splendid taste, the aroma of these organic and green teas apart, the increased effervescence in the tea cups is also because of the health benefits of these teas.
Being rich in antioxidants, these are great for health. "I feel freshened up after a cup of 'sweet lemon' tea," says Preeti, a homemaker. Flavours like tulsi and ginger have added benefits like curing cough and healing fever. "We serve about nine varieties of teas and all of these are liked by the customers. Preference for tea is on the rise," says Maninder Sobti from Cakesquare. A variety of teas like tulsi tea, earl grey, spice tea, black tea, mint herbal tea, mulethi, Darjeeling tea, Assam golden brew are making the slurps and sips more delectable. "For me, the black tea is the purest form of tea that gives the real flavours of tea without any additions," says Sarabjit Singh. "My kind is black and strong," he smiles. Our collections of tulsi tea, tulsi ginger tea, ginger tea are the most preferred," says the store-manager at Fabindia. "Some of the teas also help in slimming down, others sooth and relax. Other varieties have more benefits," he says. "As these can be taken without sugar and milk, organic teas are an excellent replacement for those with heavy intake of teas," says Vinay Vohra from Well Being. "These help cutting in calories and adding taste," he says. Many of the teas have the base of 'tulsi', which can be later combined with jasmine, mulethi or sweet-lemon for more flavour.

Shop, don’t drop
It’s that dreadful time of the month when you have spent all your pocket money on the glorious flaming shots while clubbing for two consecutive Saturday nights. To your utter realisation, it’s your friend’s birthday and you need a fancy new overcoat. So where do you shop with just a couple of hundreds in your clutch? Smile the frown away while we walk you through the cheap yet trendy places.
When it comes to styling - each to his own! So what makes us tap our feet to the tango? You guessed it—money! The flea markets in Sector 19, 22, 40 and 41 are your first stop. There’s nothing too flashy that could possibly match the red in your Prada, but patience like they say, a virtue. If you dig deeper into the dunes of clothes that are kept rather carelessly on the tables or manjis, you may behold a light summer-print chiffon shirt, a pair of beige leggings or
a fancy overcoat just for Rs 350. If you have a slightly more relaxed budget, then delve into your wallet for a beautiful wide beam because now it’s your turn to enter the land of Bargain for Brands—Sector 34 and 35. It’s a sigh of relief for those who have to match the standards of the ‘self-proclaimed social butterflies’, every town has its own these days! You can get hold of brands such as Billabong, Zara and other international brands that suit your taste. Mexican woollen shrugs are a lucky catch if you happen to search for them in the secluded shops that are located in the pockets of Sector 34, right opposite to the gurdwara. These shops can quote a range of Rs 200 to 600, depending upon the garment you pick, but a little bargain may take you a long way. A lot of other shops in Sector 15, 8 and 26 also provide for budget-friendly shopping. However, the shabby gallies of Shastri Market, Sector 19, may surprise you with the variety of jackets and cardigans. Harpreet Singh, who owns shop 95, 96 and 97, shares, “We get our woollens from the factory outlets in Ludhiana. The cardigans here are priced at Rs 550.” While detailing the amount of margin that he makes, Singh smiles, “When you shop for fancy cardigans in showrooms, they’re priced nowhere below Rs 2,000. We bring you the jackets that are priced at Rs 600 and we save 10 per cent margin for ourselves.” Besides offering a variety of garments for girls, these shops also cater to the style needs of men-folk. If you like to experiment, pick the trendy denim jackets that are priced at Rs 800. A series of oil-washed denims for men are also a catch. If you have 100 rupees on you, buy a printed or plain cloth. Make sure it’s bold, not flashy and printed, not patched. Get hold of a tailor or if your mom stitches, ah! There’s no bliss that any other talent could give you. Stitch your purchases into fashionable kaftans. It looks chic and suits all body types. You can team it up with a cardigan. But if you really want to set fire to the look, hit the rehri market of Sector 19 and buy overcoats that are priced at Rs 350 only. Tanya Malhotra, a shopaholic confesses, “I know this is nothing like the flea markets of Delhi or Mumbai or even Goa for that matter. But every flea market has a different charm. I love street shopping because it does not burn a hole in my pocket. How many times can you wear one dress? Probably this is one reason why I hate blowing megabucks on clothes.” The only problem with regular showroom brands is that when you walk around like a French model donned with the latest on Haute couture, thinking that nothing could go wrong, you behold the sight of another mademoiselle wearing exactly the same dress. There is no fashion faux pas that’s bigger than this so please wear those loafers right away and take a stride of the city’s street fashion.

Best hand forward
Dr Vikas Sharma One has a tendency to care a lot on facial skin for that youthful look so that the mirror can tell you that you are 20 years younger than your actual age. But wait till you look down at your hands. The hands are one of the first places where we see the signs of ageing, and also the area most people neglect. As we age, our skin gets thinner, but when you’re dealing with the backs of the hands, where skin is already thin, any loss of fat underneath is obvious right away—with loose, wrinkly skin, and as skin thins, dark spots and pigmentation begin to appear, while veins and tendons become more obvious. The problems of cracked and chapped hands, palmar psoriasis, hand eczema, palmar keratoderma, discoloration of finger nails, pigmentation and darkening over the knuckles of hands, fungal and bacterial infections of hands and nails, increased sweating in patients of palmar hyperhidrosis, etc tend to drastically affect the person’s lifestyle. Tortured by these problems and an unavoidable exposure to billions of agents, your hands can go on strike and yearn for treatment! Hand out
With the exception of our face, hands are by far our most exposed body parts. They are constantly under attack from the elements – wind, sun, temperature changes, hard water, soap, detergents – you name it, our hands have to deal with it! All this adds up to dry, irritated skin and even premature aging. In fact, the more the skin’s protective barrier is compromised, the greater the chances of damage. The skin of our hands is thin, delicate, and often dry. This is why it is the first to suffer from cold winds, frost, and dry heated air inside our apartments. Root cause
From physiological point of view hand skin is more vulnerable than face skin. The amount of moisture in hand skin is five times smaller than in face skin. Number of sebaceous glands is not so great and production of protective lipid layer in hand skin is 10 times smaller than in face skin. Watch out
It’s important to take good care of hand skin and that means using the right hand care products. This is especially true in the winter when hands are the most prone to chapping. Look for gentle cleansers that contain glycerine and moisturisers with glycerine, lanolin and rich hydrating oils. Be sure to rinse your hands really well because soap residue is drying and will irritate your skin. Pay special attention to the space between your fingers where soap residue often hides. Use only very mild soaps having pH of around 5.6 or liquid soaps with a lot of added
glycerine. Moisturise your hands with a good quality non-fragrant hand cream immediately after towelling it dry. The moisturiser needs to be non-greasy so that you don’t mind using it during the day. Apply the cream to your entire hand, but especially the back, which has thinner skin and is more likely to chap. Hand in glove
If you have chapped hands you need to protect them from further irritation. A good rule of the thumb is that for contact with things that would be too harsh to apply to your facial skin, you need gloves to touch them with your chapped hands. This is surprising and inconvenient. But think about what you ask your hands to do over and over again! Normally they can handle it because healthy hand skin is a pretty good barrier, but chapped skin is broken. Harsh chemicals get through chapped skin, irritating it like putting lemon juice on a cut. Your chapped hands just won’t heal unless you protect them until they are completely recovered. This means that you need to keep using the gloves until the skin is entirely back to normal plus at least a week or two after it is normal. (Dr Sharma is a
