Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, January 28
Making it a sheer mockery, the local Chandigarh Football Association has appointed an SAI (Sports Authority of India) official as assistant coach and selected his son in the probable’s squad, for the upcoming Santosh Trophy soccer tournament. The 25-member probable team is attending regular practice sessions at the soccer ground of Panjab University under the supervision of same coach.

According to honorary secretary, his father is acting as the assistant coach, in the ongoing camp and is also expected to accompany the team. “Everyone is selected through proper trials, held in the same ground” said the official. “Yes, he is attending the camp and attending training sessions. The selection panel consisting of professionals selected him during the trials. The final selection of the team will take place in a day or so” said Rakesh Bakshi, honorary secretary of the Chandigarh Football Association.

The player (name withheld) is presently working with a local school as a teacher and completed his bachelors of physical education from Panjab University, time ago.

On the other hand, one of the players (seeking anonymity) said, “The selection trails are mere formality. It’s a cake walk for the players, whose parents have contacts with in the association members. There are only few players who can actually perform which is evident from the physic as well as attitude of the players. All we want is that the deserving players should be given opportunity to perform. Though the playing eleven is pretty fine, the bench strength is big question mark on this team.

The appointment of the coach has also raised many eye brows. SAI has four coaches including, a former international skipper of Indian football team, currently coaching the Chandigarh Football Academy.

Interestingly, the presently appointed coach joined the Chandigarh SAI center almost a year ago and has been mainly looking after the office work. “He has joined his office after getting transferred from Sonepat, a year ago. He is mainly looking after the office work and the schemes centers”, said an official SAI centre, on the basis of anonymity.

Confusion over appointment of the chief coach

The association is also struggling to find the chief coach of the team. According to general secretary of the Chandigarh Football Association, Bhupinder Singh, one of the coaches of SAI, will be appointed as the chief coach but the latter is yet to accept the offer. “Currently I am coaching the inter-university football team for girls. The local association has pursued me for coaching the national team for the Santosh trophy, but I am not sure whether to I would accompany them or not. If my inter-varsity team performs well in the All-India tourney, then I will not accompany the Santosh trophy team but if my team fails to perform then might give a thought to the offer” said Bhupinder Singh.
