Forest Dept staff manhandled, 7 booked
Our Correspondent

Ferozepur, January 25
Seven persons have been booked for manhandling and threatening the staff of the Forest Department that went to plant trees on a piece of land taken back from the illegal custody of the land mafia in Gatti Harike area a few days ago.

Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Sanjeev Tiwari said today while his staff was planting trees on the land after erecting pillars along the boundary, some persons arrived at the scene and manhandled the staff. The miscreants threatened them and later uprooted the pillars and tried to reoccupy the land.

The DFO said the department lodged a complaint with the Makhu police station following which seven persons, including one Balbir Singh, were booked.

He said the land had been given back to the department after illegal allotment made to some private persons was cancelled by the revenue department.

Earlier, the Forest Department got the ownership of the land estimated to be worth crores and situated in the vicinity of the Harike bird sanctuary.

The DFO said that in the absence of proper security arrangements, the forest staff had come under attack from the land mafia on several occasions.

Tiwari added that the matter would be taken up with senior police officials so that adequate security personnel could be arranged for the safety of the valuable forest land in the area.

Health Ministry approves PGI satellite centre for Ferozepur

Ferozepur, January 25
In a significant development which will give a major fillip to the healthcare facilities in the hitherto 'neglected' border region of the state, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has given its nod to develop a satellite centre of the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) Chandigarh, at Ferozepur.

While confirming the development, Ferozepur MLA Parminder Singh Pinki said he had taken up the matter with the vice-president of the AICC, Rahul Gandhi, during his visit to Ferozepur some time back following which Health and Family Welfare Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad asked his officials to draft a proposal in this regard. Later, a team of doctors from the PGIMER had conducted a survey in this border region following which a concept proposal was prepared and sent to the Ministry.

In a memo sent to PGIMER director Dr YK Chawla yesterday (a copy of which is with The Tribune) , PK Pradhan, secretary, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, asked him to get a detailed report on the project prepared along with the financial implications in order to get the final approval for the project.

Earlier, in its concept proposal sent to the Ministry, the PGIMER had emphasised on the dire need to set up a health facility that can provide specialist teaching and training services in this district situated on the India-Pakistan border.

Pinki said the proposed satellite centre would have a 100-bed hospital, which would be linked to the PGIMER for referral, training and consultation purposes. Sources in the Ministry said the proposed hospital would have departments of medicine, surgery, gynaecology, pediatrics, anaesthesia, community/family medicine besides psychiatry.

A provision for 24-hour emergency services along with OPD and inpatient facilities would also be provided at the centre to come up at the cost of around Rs 200 crore.

"The hospital will also provide relief to the residents from everlasting fear of war," said Pinki, adding that as per the UN conventions, the areas where hospitals were situated were not supposed to be attacked during war.

It is pertinent to mention that the Ministry has already approved a state-of-the-art eye-care hospital for Ferozepur to be built at the cost of Rs 4.20 crore.
