Hoshiarpur, January 24
Two motorcycle-borne youths, identified as Gamma of Dhamloo (Jalandhar) and Pinda of Peer Baksh (Kapurthala), allegedly snatched a purse containing Rs 4,000 cash, four ATM cards of Ranjit Kaur, wife of Rajinder Singh of ward no 3, Tanda, at a petrol pump on Miani Road, Tanda, last evening.

According to the police sources, both fled on their motorcycle after committing the crime. Tanda police registered a case under Section 382 of the IPC against the duo.

Illegal vends thriving

In addition to 26 sanctioned liqour and country-made foreign liquor vends, there are 125 illegal liquor shops running in the city, allegedly by some influential excise contractors, in connivance with the Excise and Taxation Department and the police for the past many months.

This was alleged by Ranjit Rana, vice-president of the state unit of Shiv Sena (Bal Thackrey) while addressing mediapersons here this afternoon.

Rana alleged that anyone who tried to raise voice against this illegal practice was assaulted by musclemen of the contractors, whereas police implicated him in a false case.

He added that they had made a written complaint to the Deputy Commissioner and SSP in this regard but no action had been taken so far. Despite various representations to the Excise and Taxation Officer, the illegal vends were still functioning, he added.
