Goods worth lakhs gutted
Ludhiana, January 19 The fire broke out in a factory manufacturing cardboards, which is located in a semi-residential area. The extent of fire was such that fire tenders from all fire stations of the city were rushed to the spot. The factory owners claimed that they had suffered a loss of at least Rs 70 lakh. As per information, Dimple Packages is located behind Sabzi Mandi near Salem Tabri and the owners had stored empty cardboard boxes inside the factory premises. Gaurav, an eyewitness, told The Tribune that the fire broke at around 6 pm. “I was passing by when I saw the factory up in flames. I think that fire broke out due to a short circuit. The entire factory was enveloped in flames within minutes. Then we informed the fire brigade that reached the spot and started dousing the flames,” informed Gaurav. LC Bhandari, Shiv Kumar’s friend, owner of Dimple Packages, said that every thing had been reduced to ashes. “We have suffered a loss of at least Rs 70 lakh because finished goods worth Rs 50 lakh were lying inside the factory premises, besides machinery and raw material. We suspect that that the fire broke out due to a short circuit since the power was fluctuating since morning. When the fire broke out, 11 to12 persons were working inside the factory premises and thankfully they were able to come out on time and escape unhurt," informed Bhandari. Till the filing of the report, the fire brigade officials were still trying to bring fire under control. |

Imagine the plight of the elderly
Ludhiana, January 19 Kulwant Singh Malhi, in charge (Traffic Zone II), came to the rescue of a 78-year-old visually impaired senior citizen and got him admitted to a shelter home, near here. Sham Rao, a 78-year-old, visually impaired from Sangli district, Maharashtra, was "deserted" by none other than his brother and sister-in-law. For the past three days, the helpless man was roaming near Ghantaghar Chowk in the biting cold, trying to locate his relatives. He never knew that he had reached miles away from those who had deserted him. Malhi said that he came to know about Rao from the shopkeepers. When he asked the senior citizen, the latter maintained that he was made to sit in a train by his brother and brother's wife from Sangli five days ago. Rao was also told by his brother that he too was accompanying him. Since he was blind, he had no other choice but to believe what was told to him. He tried to locate his brother, asked the passengers sitting by about him but to no avail and reached Ludhiana railway station three days ago. He had no belongings and was helpless. A blanket was provided to him by the shopkeepers, but that too was taken away by some drug-addict, said Malhi. He further said, "Rao was unmarried and stayed with his brother's family. I took him to Daad, but I was told that there was no provision for senior citizens. Then I took him to Phagwara, and there too they refused to take care of him. Someone told me about a shelter home in Machiyan Khurd village, about 20 km from here, which is being run by Father Basal. Today, I went to Father with Rao and by God’s grace, Father Basal agreed to keep him in the shelter home and now, Rao is relieved". Malhi said that it was too unfortunate that senior citizens were being deserted by their own relatives. "We do not know about our future, let us not forget God", rued Malhi. In another shocking incident, an 86-year-old Swaran Singh ended his life by hanging himself from the ceiling of his room. A resident of Punjab Mata Nagar, Singh stayed alone in his house and was "depressed". Singh was depressed as his wife died a few years ago. He had a daughter who was mentally challenged and also died. The incident came to light this morning when his domestic help came to work at his house. The door of the room was opened and she found him hanging from the ceiling of the room. Man held for duping women
