Pak issues arrest warrant against Qadri Islamabad/Lahore, Jan 16 A case was registered against Qadri and over 70 unidentified persons at the Kohsar police station for attacking police officials at the venue of the protest A source privy to the development said an arrest warrant against Qadri had been issued by a local
magistrate. The authorities were awaiting a go-ahead from Interior Minister Rehman Malik to arrest Qadri, the source
said. "There have been deliberations on the issue and, at the moment, the government is in two minds - whether to start negotiations with Qadri or arrest him," the source
said. The source said a decision in this regard was expected sometime
soon. Other sources said Qadri and the others were booked under provisions of the law related to attempted murder, interfering in the functioning of the government, snatching weapons from the police and disturbing the
peace. Both the ruling Pakistan People's Party (PPP) and main opposition PML-N are blaming each other for providing "safe passage" to Qadri for his "long march" from Lahore to Islamabad, a move that has allowed the cleric to dictate terms to the
authorities. "Why did the Punjab government not detain Qadri at his residence in Lahore? If he had been placed under house arrest, hardly a few hundred of his supporters would have come out on the streets," said a PPP member of the provincial assembly of Punjab, which is ruled by the PML-N. — PTI Cleric visited India in Feb ’12 New Delhi: Allama Tahirul Qadri, a vocal critic of terrorism, had undertaken a four-week tour to India in February 2012. He released his book ‘Fatwa on Terrorism’ at a well-attended function organised at the Indian Islamic Centre located on Lodhi road in south Delhi on February 22. Dubbed as Anna Hazare of Pakistan, he visited India on the invite of the Minhaj-Ul-Quran International, an organisation that promotes Sufi learning. He even visited Baroda to deliver a lecture. Qadri had also been invited to speak at the World Economic Forum in January 2011. — TNS |

Islamabad, January 16 Qadri, who marched into Islamabad with his supporters on Monday and began a protest near Parliament, outlined four demands during his speech this afternoon, including electoral reforms according to the Constitution before polls and reconstitution of the Election
Commission. He said there should be no secret compromise between the ruling Pakistan People's Party and the main opposition PML-N on forming a caretaker government to oversee the next general election and the immediate dissolution of the national and provincial assemblies. — PTI

‘India, China should deepen trust to solve thorny issues’ Beijing, January 16 "Since the New Year, interactions between China and India at multilateral and bilateral levels have been eye-catching. Beijing and New Delhi have expressed willingness to step up security cooperation and work for common development", an editorial in the China Daily said
today. "Obviously, cooperation in trade has become the cornerstone of Sino-Indian ties. Beijing and New Delhi have every reason to continue to build on the current desirable momentum, as it will help deepen mutual trust and lay a solid foundation for the solving of other thorny issues between them", it
said. Recalling last week's visit of China's top diplomat Dai Bingguo to India to attend the BRICS security officials' get-together, it said, he met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and handed down a letter of goodwill from China's new leader Xi Jinping which was well received in
India. After this, the militaries of the two countries held their Annul Defence Dialogue in Beijing this
week. In his talks with Defence Secretary Shashi Kant Sharma, who headed the Indian delegation, Gen Xu
Qiliang, vice-chairman of China's Central Military Commission, told him that China is committed to promoting the strategic partnership for peace and prosperity with India, the editorial
said. China attaches great importance to developing military ties with India and hopes to increase mutual strategic trust, enhance friendly communication and deepen pragmatic cooperation, Xu told Sharma, it pointed out. — PTI China’s new Envoy to India Beijing: China on Wednesday appointed career diplomat Wei Wei, its current envoy to Singapore, as the country's new Ambassador to India, succeeding Zhang Yan. |
