Pak issues arrest warrant against Qadri
Govt to hold election by May 15

Islamabad/Lahore, Jan 16
An arrest warrant has been issued against the fiery cleric Allama Tahirul Qadri, who is leading thousands of supporters in a protest demanding the ouster of the Pakistan government, after the police here registered a case against him.

A case was registered against Qadri and over 70 unidentified persons at the Kohsar police station for attacking police officials at the venue of the protest
in Islamabad.

A source privy to the development said an arrest warrant against Qadri had been issued by a local magistrate.

The authorities were awaiting a go-ahead from Interior Minister Rehman Malik to arrest Qadri, the source said.

"There have been deliberations on the issue and, at the moment, the government is in two minds - whether to start negotiations with Qadri or arrest him," the source said.

The source said a decision in this regard was expected sometime soon.

Other sources said Qadri and the others were booked under provisions of the law related to attempted murder, interfering in the functioning of the government, snatching weapons from the police and disturbing the peace.

Both the ruling Pakistan People's Party (PPP) and main opposition PML-N are blaming each other for providing "safe passage" to Qadri for his "long march" from Lahore to Islamabad, a move that has allowed the cleric to dictate terms to the authorities.

"Why did the Punjab government not detain Qadri at his residence in Lahore? If he had been placed under house arrest, hardly a few hundred of his supporters would have come out on the streets," said a PPP member of the provincial assembly of Punjab, which is ruled by the PML-N. — PTI

‘India, China should deepen trust to solve thorny issues’

Beijing, January 16
Terming the high level contacts between India and China this year as "eye-catching", a state-run daily today said cooperation in trade has become a "cornerstone" of the bilateral ties and both nations should deepen trust to solve thorny issues like the border dispute.

"Since the New Year, interactions between China and India at multilateral and bilateral levels have been eye-catching. Beijing and New Delhi have expressed willingness to step up security cooperation and work for common development", an editorial in the China Daily said today.

"Obviously, cooperation in trade has become the cornerstone of Sino-Indian ties. Beijing and New Delhi have every reason to continue to build on the current desirable momentum, as it will help deepen mutual trust and lay a solid foundation for the solving of other thorny issues between them", it said.

Recalling last week's visit of China's top diplomat Dai Bingguo to India to attend the BRICS security officials' get-together, it said, he met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and handed down a letter of goodwill from China's new leader Xi Jinping which was well received in India.

After this, the militaries of the two countries held their Annul Defence Dialogue in Beijing this week.

In his talks with Defence Secretary Shashi Kant Sharma, who headed the Indian delegation, Gen Xu Qiliang, vice-chairman of China's Central Military Commission, told him that China is committed to promoting the strategic partnership for peace and prosperity with India, the editorial said.

China attaches great importance to developing military ties with India and hopes to increase mutual strategic trust, enhance friendly communication and deepen pragmatic cooperation, Xu told Sharma, it pointed out. — PTI
