Farmers block highway
Stage dharna against unscheduled power cuts

Fatehgarh Sahib, January 16
Commuters on the Sirhind-Patiala state highway faced inconvenience due to a blockade by farmers near Chorwala village today.

The farmers staged a dharna from 10 am to 4 pm against unscheduled power cuts. The police had a tough time diverting the traffic through villages.

Addressing the protestors, Congress MLA Kuljit Singh Nagra said crops could get damaged in the absence of power supply.

The protestors said if the government failed to restore 24-hour power supply to farmers, the Opposition parties would organise a massive protest on the national highway near Sirhind on January 22.

Senators discuss safety of female students, staff

Fatehgarh Sahib, January 16
The first meeting of the Senate of Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University was held on the university campus here today. The meeting was presided over by Vice-Chancellor Dr Gurmohan Singh.

The Vice-Chancellor informed the Senate about the construction of a girls' hostel on the campus. He also apprised them of measures being taken for the protection of female students and employees in the wake of increasing crimes against women.

He said the security on the campus and at girls' hostels has been increased and high-power CCTV cameras were being installed at all the strategic locations.

During the meeting, the Senate approved reorganisation of the existing departments into faculty schools and the courses being introduced from the next academic session. The Senate also approved the publication of a biannual journal on Sri Guru Granth Sahib Studies.

Five burglars arrested

Fatehgarh Sahib, January 16
The district police has busted a five-member gang accused of looting trucks at gun point. Following a tip off, the police arrested all the five members of the gang, including the kingpin, Sukhwinder Singh alias Laddi, a resident of Chaura village in Patiala district.

The other accused were identified as Manpreet Singh of Ropar district, Dalbir Singh of Nabha, and Pawan Kumar and Karam Singh of Amloh.

The police also recovered a pistol, seven cartridges, iron rods, two kirpans, chilli powder, nails and other items used for burglary. The truck (no. HR-55B-0622) in which the burglars were found was also seized during the operation.

2 youths hurt in accident

Dera Bassi, January 16
Two students were injured in a road accident on the Ambala-Chandigarh road near Bhankar yesterday. The injured were identified as Kamaldeep Singh and Arjit, residents of Zirakpur, pursuing their studies here.

They were admitted to the Government Medical College and Hospital in Sector 32, Chandigarh. The accident occurred when the youths were returning from their college. A car hit their Honda Activa scooter near the Ghaggar bridge. — OC

Firing incident
Four-day remand for accused

Chandigarh, January 16
A day after the police arrested two students from Barnala for firing shots at the police, the accused were remanded in a four-day police custody.

The police had arrested Nitin Preet Brar and Gurpreet as they brandished a pistol at the cops stationed at a barricade on the road separating Sectors 50 and 5 and fired six rounds. The barricade was set up near Burail Jail in the wake of Republic Day. The two youths from Barnala were overpowered and were taken into custody.

The two have been booked for attempt to murder under Section 307, assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty 353 and 25/54/59 Arms Act at the Sector 34 police stations.

Man gets two-year jail

The Court of Additional District and Sessions Judge, VP Sirohi, today sentenced a senior assistant in the office of DPI in Sector 17 to a two-year imprisonment in a bribe case.

In 2007, Rakesh Kumar, had demanded and accepted a bribe of Rs 500 for attesting documents of a student, Charanjeet Singh, and had been held guilty.

A fine of Rs 15,000 was also imposed on him.

The student had approached the Central Vigilance Department in 2007 and filed a complaint against Rakesh Kumar who had been demanding a bribe from all those who wanted to get a file moved or attestation done. After investigations were done by the department, the official was arrested in a case of demanding and accepting bribe.

Man booked for cheating, forgery

Mohali, January 16
The police has booked a resident of Kangra district on charges of cheating and forgery.

The police said Inderpal Singh, a resident of Sector 70 here, complained to the police that Vikram alias Mandy Burgaza, a resident of Sokni Ghat village falling in Kangra district, had allegedly cheated his daughter.

He further said Vikram became friendly with his daughter and told her that his parents stayed in Switzerland and were citizens of that country. He allegedly took her into confidence and got deposited Rs 3.89 lakh in a fake account opened by him. The amount was not returned back.

The complaint was inquired into by the in charge of the EO Wing and opinion of the district attorney was also taken.

Later, a case was registered in this regard.

Five youths injured in clash

Mohali, January 16
Five youths were injured in a clash at Phase VII here late this evening. Some youths, who came in a car, allegedly attacked another group of youths with swords and baseball bats near a petrol station in the residential area. The attackers also damaged a car belonging to the other group.

The injured were identified as Vishal Kapur, Rahul, Ravi, Rishu and Rajinder Pal. Rahul and Rajinder Pal were admitted to hospital with serious injuries. The police recorded statements of the victims. The victims reported the attackers included Shubham, Yug, Ratia, Goldy and Honey. A case had been registered. — OC

SHSM College for Women, Chella Mukhsuspur, (Hoshiarpur), beat Guru Nanak College for Girls, Muktsar, by 3-0 in the ongoing Inter-College Football (Women) Tournament being held on PU grounds, Chandigarh. For the winners’ side, Parvir Kaur scored 2 goals, while Harjot Kaur made one goal.

In another match, GHG Khalsa College, Gurusar Sadhar (Ludhiana), beat SGHRS College for Women, Chabbewal (Hoshiarpur), by 9-0.

For the winning side, Veerpal Kaur scored the maximum 3 goals followed by Gurpreet Kaur (2 goals), one each by Manpreet Kaur, Jagdeep Kaur, Sumandeep Kaur and Sandeep Kaur.

Dance sport championship
Over 100 couples to vie for top slot

More than 100 couples from all over the country will converge on the Sector 10 skating rink campus in Chandigarh on January 27 to display their dancing skills in the first Chandigarh Open Prize Money Dance Sport Championship.

Giving this information, Gursharan Singh, secretary general, Chandigarh Dance Sport Association, said the championship had received a good response. Interest among dance enthusiasts of the Latin American and standard dance forms had gone up following the inclusion of dance sport as a medal sport in the Beijing Asian Games.

This dance sport has also been included in the Olympic Games as a demonstrative sport and will be included in the Olympiad as a medal sport very soon. This sport is a mega spectator event, drawing as much crowd as figure skating in the Winter Olympic Games.

Three girls of “Jhalak Dikhla Jaa” fame, which focuses dancing skills on the small screen, will be the main attraction in the one-day mega event. These include Priti Gupta, who holds the world record for dancing non-stop for the longest time, Tanushree and Arpita Ranadev.

Priti Gupta has also taken part in the Asian Dance Sport Championship at several venues, along with Shanon Benjamin, where the two finished fourth.

The star-studded evening will also include a Rock "n" Roll performance by the famous Tanushree group. This event has also been included as a separate event in the Asian Games.

Youths told to shun drugs

Mohali, January 16
A well-known marathon runner, Fauja Singh (102), today led a run organised in protest against rapists and in favour of giving women due respect in society. The run, named as “jagat janani”, was organised by a Punjabi newspaper and started from the Phase I Industrial Area. After crossing various areas, the run culminated at the Phase VII market.

MP Ravneet Singh Bittu, MLA Balbir Singh Sidhu, international runner Maan Kaur (96), her son Gurdev Singh (76), Pal Singh (60), Brig Kuldeep Singh (retd) and schoolchildren were among the participants.

The mini-marathon was flagged off by Arjuna Awardee and SP (Traffic) Sunita Rani.

Fauja Singh said one should fight social evils unitedly and create a new and healthy society. He also urged the youth to keep away from drugs. — OC

Hockey Assn founder member dies at 75

Chandigarh, January 16
SC Khanna, founder member of both Chandigarh Hockey Association and Rock Rovers Hockey Club, died here this afternoon after protracted illness. He was 75.

He was also the treasurer of the Chandigarh Hockey Association and vice-president of the Rock Rovers Club. He will be cremated tomorrow at the Sector 25 cremation ground at 12.30 pm.

City fencers shine at 58th National School Games

Chandigarh fencing team of the Education Department gave a thundering performance at the 58th National School Games, which concluded in Jalgaon (Maharashtra) on January 13.

The team won 24 medals (3 gold, 14 silver and 7 bronze) in the event. While the U-19 girls’ team won the overall trophy, the U-14 girls’ team won the runners-up trophy.

U-17 boys and girls finished with the overall third position. Seventeen states participated in the tournament and Chandigarh fencing team was declared second in the overall category.

Director of Public Instructions (Schools) Upkar Singh, Deputy Director Schools Chanchal Singh, Assistant Deputy Director Saroj Mittal, DEO Ram Kumar, Principal GMSSS-10 Indra Beniwal and coach Charanjeet Kaur congratulated the fencers.
