HC notice on PU Senate nominations
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, January 7
The Punjab and Haryana High Court today issued a notice of motion on a petition challenging the nominations made by the Chancellor to the Panjab University (PU) Senate for 2012-16.

The notice was issued on a petition filed in public interest by Chandigarh-based RTI activist Dr Rajinder K Singla. The PIL was filed in December just before the winter break, but was referred to another Bench by the Division Bench of Chief Justice Arjan Kumar Sikri and Justice Rakesh Kumar Jain. Since the Chief Justice himself happens to be the ex-officio member of the PU Senate, the Bench transferred the matter.

The grounds taken by the petitioner to challenge the nominations are that women candidates have been left out of the list; and two candidates have been included despite the fact that they lost the senate elections.

The petitioner added the varsity has nothing less than 188 colleges affiliated to it along with four regional centres. But not a single teacher has been included.

Chandigarh, January 7
In the world of modern techniques, when hockey stadiums come up equipped with extra stable Astroturf fields, the City Beautiful will organise the 59th National School Games in hockey, on fields having bald surfaces, uneven patches and some of them are half covered with grass.

Once interacting with Dhanraj Pillay, the ace former international hockey player mentioned, there is a dire need to improve hockey at grass-root level, if the nation expects something out of this national game. Somehow, the upcoming national school game of hockey is enough to tell that how is our national game growing.

The upcoming nationals are schedule to be organise at various centres including Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 37-B, Government Model Senior Secondary School Sector 37-B, Government Model High School, Sector 42, Post Graduate Government College, Sector 11, Hockey Stadium, Sector 18, Hockey Stadium, Sector 42, Sports Complex, Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 15, and St Stephens school sector 45, here.

Notably, out of these venues, the stadium of Sector 42 is the only arena to be equipped with an Astroturf field (which also needs replacement) and all others have rough surfaces. A total of 22 states across the nation are expected to participate in the competition.

“We cannot organise the entire competition on the only Astroturf field we have here otherwise, it will take a month to finish the competition. We have shortlisted some grounds that are capable of hosting these matches. We are working on other aspects but left with no option. In all most all the states, the players play hockey on grassy fields only, the Astroturf field is not a must required thing. Although, in this competition, each team will be given a chance to play on the Astroturf field,” said an official of the UT Education Department, on condition of anonymity.

Upkar Singh, Director Public Instruction (DPI) Schools, stated, “We have reviewed all the venues and could not find anything. We are ready to conduct this tourney and if there are certain shortcomings, it will be improved well before the tournament,” said he.
