Two arrested with intoxicants: The Dirba police has arrested two persons after seizing 1.8 kg of intoxicating powder and 4,000 tablets from their possession in Safipur Kalan village near Dirba. Dirba Station House Officer Krishan Kumar said the accused, Pawan Kumar and Sikander Kumar, both residents of Sunam, were produced in a court at Sunam, which remanded them in police custody for two days.

‘Kanyadaan’ scheme from April: The Haryana Government has decided to implement a new scheme known as ‘Kanyadaan’ under which an incentive of Rs 11,000 per girl will be handed over to each bride during the mass marriage ceremony to be organised by the Red Cross Society or any registered non-government organisation (NGO) in the state. The scheme will be implemented with effect from April 1. The beneficiary should be a Haryana domicile and must be 18 years of age.

Ajay Gaur Faridabad BJP president: Ajay Gaur has been unanimously elected as Faridabad BJP president for the second successive term. Gaur said his priority would be to prepare his party for the next Lok Sabha elections in Faridabad. He said the BJP would do well here in alliance with the HJC in the next elections.

Jawan booked for bid to harass woman: An Army jawan, Sunil Kumar, of Mohammadpur village in Bawal tehsil yesterday intruded into Ravinder Yadav's house at Gangaicha Ahir village, 6 km from here, and sexually harassed the latter's wife, who was alone in her room. Hearing an uproar, the woman's father-in-law and mother-in-law , who were in an adjacent room, came out. The jawan managed to flee but threatened them with dire consequences if they opened their mouth.

Freedom fighter cremated: The mortal remains of veteran freedom fighter Ram Jiwan (95) were consigned to the flames with state honours at Bharangi village today. Dharam Pal, Tehsildar of Kosli, placed a wreath on the pyre on behalf of the administration. Ram Jiwan, who died last night, had joined the INA in 1940 and had undergone imprisonment in the Rangoon and Multan. He is survived by his wife, Bhoorli Devi, two sons, three daughters and several grandchildren.

Youth’s body found: The police found the body of Rocky (25) hanging in a basti near Ghawandal village near Naina Devi town, 90 km from here, last evening. Reports said Rocky belonged to nearby Anandpur Sahib, Punjab, and had married a girl from here. He had come to meet his wife and in-laws earlier in the day.

26,000 ml of illicit liquor seized, 6 held: The police has seized 26,000 ml of illicit liquor from six persons at different places in Chamba district during the past 24 hours, reports said here yesterday. The reports said cases under the relevant sections of the Excise Act had been registered at different police stations of the district. Further investigations were on.

Man gets 3-year RI: The Fast-Track Court, Mandi, has sentenced Rakesh Rana of Jandal village in Hamirpur district to undergo rigorous imprisonment (RI) for three years and pay a fine of Rs 25,000. He had been arrested under Section 21, Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.
