Jatt, Juliet… zoom ahead
Here we are in 2013…a little bit wiser, a little bit hopeful, a little bit optimistic…and with just another chance to get it right again. In the cold winter morning of January, few odd men, snug in their pullovers are hurriedly getting things in order. This is their 'chance' to give final touches to their upcoming Punjabi movie.
Debutant director of Tu Mera 22, Main Tera 22 Amit Prasher has lot of hopes from 2013 and so does the rest of the Punjabi film industry, all set to showcase what they've got. Dates have been finalised, projects are being discussed…Punjabi film industry plans to offer the best of the best movies in 2013. New faces, Bollywood influx, more moolah…expect a lot!
Cut to cut
2013 is the year that decides the fate of Punjabi cinema — whether it still has the mettle to sustain as a big independent industry. As director Navaniat Singh says, "This is a crucial year for the industry as we have some big releases coming up. After last year's successful stint audiences as well as Bollywood is looking at us." Navaniat will see two of his most awaited projects — Singh Vs Kaur, starring Gippy Grewal and Surveen Chawla, and Rangeeley, with Jimmy Sheirgill and Neha Dhupia, releasing in the first half of the year. "Singh Vs Kaur is the first attempt in romantic action comedy with Gippy in a different role. Action is going to be the USP of the film," he adds. Apart from the two projects, Navaniat has already blocked the title of his third film Ashiqui ek bata tin, a story with one hero and three girls, something that the Punjabi cinema hasn't seen before. Another release to hit the theatres in early January is script-writer Dheeraj Rattan's Saadi Love Story with a multi-star cast of Amrinder Gill, Diljit Dosanjh, Surveen Chawla and Neetu Singh. Dheeraj, who has written scripts for successful movies Mel Kara De Rabba and Jatt & Juliet, makes his debut as a director with Saadi Love Story. An experiment of different love stories woven into a single format, this one sure seems to be a must watch! Dheeraj has written scripts for many other movies such as Best of Luck (Starring Gippy Grewal and Jazzy B), Jatt & Juliet 2 and Singh Vs Kaur, all releasing in 2013. Saadi Love Story releases on January 11 and Dheeraj is pretty hopeful of giving the audiences something new. Another movie, which boasts of a multi-star cast is Tu Mera 22, Main Tera 22. Director Amit Prasher opens his innings with a comedy that will tickle your funny bone no ends. The movie sees Yo Yo Honey Singh in his debut acting role along with Amrinder Gill. Releasing January 25, the promos of the movie are already receiving a great response on Youtube. As Amit says, "I have made a comedy, which I am sure everyone will have a good time watching." Amit has already tied-up with Bollywood producer Kumar Mangat for his next Punjabi movie. Solo actors are a thing of the past and multi-star cast is the new favourite with Punjabi film directors. Sarsa, directed by Jatinder Mauhar and starring Gul Panag, Kartar Cheema and Manav Vij, offers a wholesome dose of student politics along with a deep message. Vyah 70 kms, Lucky Kabotar…are some of the other releases lined up for the year. It is however Jatt & Juliet 2, which releases in the first half on 2013 and stars Diljit Dosanjh with Neeru Bajwa, that the Punjabi and non-Punjabi audiences are looking forward to. In another surprise package, Khauf, the first Punjabi 3D horror movie, is also in the offing. Punjabi singers are the new star actors and adding their sweetness to the big pie are singers Sharry Mann and Geeta Zaildar, who make their cinema debut in 2013.
Moolah matters
Good, better, best…Punjabi cinema is following it to the core. Thanks to the growing number of producers, this year sees the rise in the budget of Punjabi films from Rs one crore to more than Rs five crore. Adds Rajan Batra of Batra Showbiz, "In 2013, thirty-five Punjabi movies will be released. Other than better production values, we will also bring big Bollywood stars like Akshay Kumar, Dharmendra and Amitabh Bachchan, who will mark their entry into Punjabi cinema."

The lucky 13!
Welcome to 2013 - the year of speculation, luxury, glamour and comforts. Although 13 is believed to be an unlucky number, if we go by astrological predictions, we have a luxurious year ahead of us! It will be a year where all bad things will come to an end and we will witness a social change, which will mark the beginning of good times.
"Thirteen is an unlucky number in Western countries, but not in Hindu astrology. Talking specifically of 2013, the numbers total up to six, which stands for luxury, media, films and glamour," says astrologer Madan Gupta Saptu. Talking about Chandigarh, a city that does not even have Sector 13, he says, "Chandigarh's sun sign is Aries and since 2013 is to be taken as a whole number and not a single number, our city will flourish this year. It will witness maximum film shootings, media and telecommunication activities. Software industry will also bounce back and we will see a lot of glamour in the city." With no fear of number 13, astrologer P Khurrana predicts 2013 as a great year for development but an unlucky one for law-breakers. "Thirteen is not an unlucky number according to our Hindu astrology. One is the number of the sun and three of Jupiter (a religious planet), so these two numbers on their own predict name, fame and prosperity. However, if one and three are added it comes to four that stands for Rahu, which forebodes phobia or speculation. Since we take the number as a whole number and the total of 2013 comes to six, this year stands for comforts of life. However, any person who does not abide by the rules of society or breaks the law is bound to be punished." Well, that's on the astrological side, talking logically Dilpreet Singh, assistant professor in a local university, says, "Logically it is just another year, but if we go by the scientific studies our planet is setting for dynamic processes of all sorts, including geophysical process in the mantle, the continents and the oceans. And this determines our weather and climate; as such we are witnessing global warming and extreme temperatures, which are likely to enhance this year." Dr Chadha, a cardiologist, says, "I don't have any reservations for this number and like each time this year will also be grand. Considering the social changes that astrologers are predicting, I believe it all depends on us. If we believe we can change the society, we surely can."

success mantra
A clear aim coupled with hardwork takes you places, and Yogeshwar Dutt, 30-year-old Olympic medal-winner in wrestling, stands as a true example. Born in village Bhainswal Kalan, Haryana, Yogeshwar found his calling rather early in life. Fame has not touched this humble soul. Wrestling is life for him. Being a vegetarian, does it hinder in a game that relies totally on strength? "Elephant is a vegetarian and a lizard otherwise." This five-time gold winner in international competitions, and bronze medal winner in Olympics (2012) as well as Asian Games (2006), shares his success mantra. Aim well
I was eight when inspired by Balraj pehalwan in my village, I thought of making a career in wrestling. The aim was to win medals and also win respect for the game; guess I have achieved both. Wrestling has found a place in India now and wrestlers are known faces. Strong will
Determination helps; life will have its lows and highs; the idea is to stick to your path. Right after cremating my father's body in 2006, I reported for practice. Those around me had said, 'the best tribute to your father would be a medal' and that I duly earned for India - a bronze in the Asian Games at Doha. Believe yourself
Have faith in yourself. When I was injured in 2008, I remained away from wrestling for more than a year. Comeback in 60 kg freestyle category was considered next to impossible. However, lying on bed in a foreign country, all I thought of was making a comeback, which I did! Value people
As one gets embroiled in professional activity, people become a non-priority. However, they are your best strength. I am as indebted to my seniors as the whole nation who stood by me! Remain disciplined
Any field requires discipline. Yes, I have come far from where I started but yet there is a long way to go. I never compromise on my diet or training schedule. There is no hobby, wrestling is what I am wedded to. Be positive
Look at the positives in life. Concentrate on the brighter side. When they say India is not doing well in sports, I believe we are getting better. In one single day, we can't become China or America, but by and by we will, and, most certainly, if other states follow Haryana government's sports policies.

Par Excellence
One of the reasons for a slice is a high left elbow (for right handed golfers) in their follow through. This is termed as a ‘chicken wing’ follow through (picture 2). Good players deliberately create this type of follow through when they want to move the ball from left to right. Slicers need to get rid of this high left elbow ‘chicken wing’ follow through to improve their ball flight.
Most mistakes in golf are either bad habits or created out of necessity. A ‘chicken wing’ is a most of the time a mistake created out of necessity rather than just a bad habit. A golfer may not have the mobility or range of motion (flexibility) in the shoulders especially the lead shoulder (left) to allow the arms to swing around the body. There are simple tests to check this as well as exercises to correct it. The second major reason of the ‘chicken wing’ is an over the top swing or an out to in swing. The direction of forces coming from out to in will send the arms in to a high finish with the left
elbow.
The action of the club face in the golf swing is to open in the backswing and close on the forward swing. This squares the face at impact and closes it on the follow through. To open the face the right elbow folds in the back swing and the left folds soon after impact. This allows the right hand to roll over the left and this action is termed as the ‘release’. In a ‘chicken wing’ finish there is no ‘release’ and apart from leaving the club face open it does not allow the full transfer of speed to the ball. A simple drill is to put a wood cover under the left armpit and hit shots without dropping it. This will force the left arm to stay connected to the body and stay low thereby allowing the right hand to ‘release’ the club head. In a correct follow through the left elbow should remain parallel or below parallel to the ground (picture 1). (Grewal has coached several national champions and professionals apart from being coach of the Indian golf team for the Eisenhower Cup (World Cup) in 2008. He is currently the Director of National Golf Academy of India and CGA Hero Honda Golf Academy. If you have any queries get in touch with him at

pet passion
She just finished celebrating the third birthday of her third pet. Cheryl Puri, 17, Class XII student, proudly claims to be not just a pet owner but a dog lover and rightly so. Many people keep a pet, but few care enough to remember and celebrate the birthday and keep the date, traditional style. Think birthday candles, cake, cards et al. “We just finished celebrating Caezor’s third birthday. We got a cake for him and cards and everything,” she’s talking of her just- turned-three male German Shepherd.
We guess he only stopped short of blowing the candles, inviting his classmates. “He’s such a well-behaved and an amazing pet, so he deserves it.” Love me, love my pet
The love for big breeds is what got this brown and black German Shepherd into the house. She laughs, “We are fond of big dogs. I love the feeling that everyone is scared of them, while you can play around. It’s a powerful feeling.” Moreover, nobody dares messe up with a girl walking with a big dog. “Our previous two dogs were called Ozo and Baffy and they were a cross between a Tibetan Mastiff and a Shepherd. As for Caezor, she adds, “It just suited him, his breed and his character. Moreover, it sounds right and is easy to call.” Yours faithfully
There are joys of a puppy on one side and then there are joys of a full grown dog aside. “My father got him from a litter on a farm in Jalandhar. He was one out of the six and while we were playing with all of them, Caezor was the only one to go back to its mother into the case and not play with us.” She adds, “That was it for us. That was the kind of dog we wanted. Someone who was affectionate and loyal.” Something he has proved to be in full measure; loving and faithful. She says, “Even when we return from a late night party, he wakes up and gives us a grand welcome. That’s worth it.” And we guess it is worth all the effort and the trouble. She laughs, “Whenever I take him for a walk, it’s not like I take him for a walk; in fact, he takes me for a ride.” It’s a complete package with a playmate, a guard and a companion rolled into one. “German Shepherds, as a breed, are
ferocious but they don’t bite people randomly. Caezor is wise enough to strike only when he sees danger to his or our lives. My younger sister and I treat him like our brother.” That says it all.

Future shock
Two things happened recently. iPhone 5 has finally hit China (a big market for Apple) and a judge in the US has declined Apple’s request to ban Samsung from selling its smartphones. With these developments, Apple is likely to gain market share globally. Equally, Samsung is set to take away a lot from their pie. This has made the war of the titans fiercer.
Where the iPhone was a clear winner in its category till recently, the Samsung S3 came as a strong competitor for iPhone 5 in the smartphones category. The iPhone 5 and Samsung S3 have been breaking their own sales records. However, neither of the phones has a dedicated market, certainly not in India. Ours is a price-sensitive country and we take our gadgets seriously. If you’re contemplating which one to pick, let me confuse you at first. Also in the fray is the Nokia Lumia 900. While it would be more appropriate to evaluate Nokia Lumia 920 here because it’s a closer competitor, we cannot make that comparison simply because the Finnish manufacturer does not plan to launch its newest offering in India yet. To understand these three phones better, let’s look at them under four primary parameters—looks, technology and price. The Look: Apple has an eye for design and that comes out well in the iPhone 5 as well. This one has a bigger screen than its predecessors and the aluminum construction makes the quality of this phone premium. Not far behind is the S3. It’s has a polycarbonate construction for a no non-sense look and it has a bigger screen than the iPhone 5 at 4.8 inches. So if you’re one for better view, S3 works in your favour. Yes, the iPhone 5 does not have a camera bump, which the S3 does have. So if you want a flat back on your phone, iPhone 5 could be your choice. For those who like colours on phones, Nokia Lumia 900 has some good options. The Lumia 900 is a more stylised phone with clean lines and a wide screen. The Technology: Samsung S3 has Google’s mobile operating system Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, which makes it a convenient phone for most users. If you’re planning to buy this phone later, Samsung is also planning an Android Jelly Bean 4.2 update to the S3. The phone also comes loaded with the S Voice, Pop up Play for viewing video while browsing and a Dropbox app. The iPhone 5 has Apple’s iOS that makes syncing it with other iProducts a breeze. It also comes with interesting apps such as FaceTime and Passbook that are relevant to fast-paced lives. Uploads and downloads are fast on the iPhone 5 at 1.9x and 4.8x respectively. Lumia 900 is a Microsoft Windows phone, an OS that’s picking up well. It also comes with useful features such as HD video capture and front-facing camera. The XBox Live gaming and Zune music player apps also appeal. The Price: Here’s the big one. If the iPhone 5 is tempting, watch out. It’s also about a 10k more expensive. The S3 and Lumia 900 are comparable in terms of the price, heating up the war of smartphones. (Anand is Chandigarh-based technology expert)

HEART TALK
I am an 18-year-old girl working as a dance tutor part time. I have realised that I am pretty good in choreography and should pursue it. But my parents are totally against making dancing as a profession. What can I do?
Sakshi Chauhan, Chandigarh
You should definitely pursue your studies and finish them before you decide to take a plunge. If you think you are good at dance, you should take lessons in it, but not at the cost of your studies. Later on if you think you still want to do it, go ahead.
I am a 45 year old man and a single parent. I want to adopt another kid, but my daughter completely detests this. How should I convince her?
Mahesh, Panchkula
This is a tricky situation, you definitely need to sit and talk to your daughter. Without her consent and willingness, I don’t think you should take this step. You can always explain the reason behind this and involve her in the entire process.

Karisma’s style check
Cocktail, the movie re-defined fashion and style. While one recalls Deepika's bold and raunchy style, with ultra-stylish and sexy dresses, one should also not forget her beautiful and sharp look from the song Second Hand Jawani.
Style Tip: For all extroverts, busy and bold girls who want to experiment with style; Deepika Padukone's look from the song is the right choice. Stitched black saree, sleeveless blouse with maang tikka and minimal styling makes for a perfect combination for assertive, extrovert women of this century. Women who are a little overweight can also try this style.
Diana Penty
Can't find an appropriate outfit for a friend's party or a long drive, why don't you try out the young and carefree style of Diana Penty from her famous song Tumhi Ho Bandu in the movie Cocktail. Style Tip: A casual and comfortable jumpsuit as seen in this song is the perfect outfit for spring and summer seasons. Wear a throw-on shirt over the jumpsuit or try the sleeveless pattern — both make for a perfectly adorable outfit. The movie is a good example of how apt styling and fashion can make a huge difference. Be it the bold, sexy and glamorous style of Deepika Padukone or the innocent, pretty face of Diana Penty, the movie has set a benchmark. Anushka Sharma
From being the docile, distressed damsel in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, to playing an extrovert journalist in Jab Tak Hai Jaan, this actress has come a long way. Style Tip: For all those women who work outdoors or for married women who prefer wearing western outfits, Anushka's style from the song Jiya Re Jiya will be the right choice. Tank tops, cargoes and animal print scarves provide that casual, comfortable feel; keeping you warm during winters and yet stylish. A combined look of ganjis, sneakers and scarves is also chic. "This look was primarily adopted by me, for the first time in Bollywood, in my comedy movie with Govinda and Sanjay Dutt, Haseena Maan Jayegi. I appeared on screen wearing cargoes, paired with casual tank tops, topped with two pony tails to add to the cheerful and carefree character that I played in the movie," says Karisma. Sonakshi Sinha
Sonakshi Sinha is known for her buoyant and blithe on-screen characters in Indian clothes. Style Tip: Adorned in a red hot saree paired with a deep neck matching blouse, harmonised with a perfect set of accessories, including maang tikka, big earrings loops and a cluster of bangles in one hand, Sonakshi Sinha just has the right look for the perfect host of the house party. She portrays the ideal Indian woman projecting a subtle sensuality and feminine poise wrapped in a saree. "One might be surprised to know that costume designer Niharika Khan got the same saree from the set of famous choreographer Saroj Khan's dance show. Also as the twist unfolds you will witness the similarity of Akshay Kumar's look and appeal in the movie, very much inspired by Salman Khan's look in one of my famous movie Judwa. The era of vibrant and vivid coloured pants speaks for all," says Karisma. Vidya Balan
She made a style statement as a pregnant lady in Kahaani. Style Tip: Explore the Vidya Balan pregnant look from the film Kahaani where she symbolises beauty in her ultra-stylish and comfortable couture, wearing baggy printed outfits. Seen fully clad in abstract floral print dresses paired with subtle shades of shrugs and big glasses, adds to her stylish quotient. Kareena Kapoor
Among the wedding vows, customs, traditions and preparations, the bride is always anxious about her look. So, the sizzling and vivacious Kareena Kapoor brought back the classic Mujra look with a modern twist in the popular song Dil Mera Muft Ka from the movie Agent Vinod. Style Tip: Well, no one will disagree with the fact that she looks absolutely stunning and gorgeous in the pink sharara outfit in the song. The perfect dare-bare, yet glamorous look, is not only the right choice for brides, it can also be attempted during traditional family functions as well as parties. The famous Kasida Kaari embroidery used for the outfit adds to the simple, pretty and fresh look of Bebo. "Manish Malhotra designed the outfit and it instantly got picked by the young brides. You may not want to miss the fact that gorgeous Malaika Arora Khan also experimented with the same look for the Marrakech Film Festival," she says.

Katrina’s flying high
Katrina Kaif appears really cheerful, sweet, and friendly in her movies, at media events, and with her fans. Her behaviour when she is on flights is another story altogether and takes many by surprise.
A source says, "Katrina never talks to the air hostesses when she is flying. She won't ask them for a glass of water or respond to their questions. She will convey her messages or responses to her manager Sandhya who will do the needful with the air hostess. This odd behaviour is nothing new and she has been doing this for a few years now. Once, the air hostess woke up Katrina in the middle of her beauty sleep to ask her to fasten her seat-belt and she got an earful from the actress, even though she was just doing her duty." The source continues, "So, basically Katrina's manager Sandhya does all the communication when they are flying whether it is domestic or international and whether the flight attendants are Indians or foreigners. Katrina literally keeps to herself. Once she hits the airports, she returns to her friendly avatar and happily poses for pictures with fans as well as signs autographs. People who were with her on the flight are quite dumb-founded by the drastic change in her behaviour." We have no clue why her personality changes when she is flying!

Aashka gets candid
Aashka Goradia has come out of the Bigg Boss house for good. She bid the house goodbye and here she recalls what went inside the house. How are you feeling about being evicted for the second time? I enjoyed my time in the Bigg Boss house, meeting so many different people and being with them for the longest time. The experience taught me a lot and gave me many good memories too. Have you left behind the episode Imam in the padosi house? Yes. I only remember the fact that I had a lovely time in the house. Did you feel people in the house were the same as they were outside? I only knew Delnaaz since years and no one else. And she’s the same. I became friends with Urvashi and Sana and others in the house. They are lovely, genuine people who I would love to be friends with once they come out of the house. I believe in making friends for good. Who do you think will win the show? Though many have great chances, I feel it would either be Sana or Delnaaz. There are rumours that your boyfriend Rohit Bakshi has spilt with you? These are all rubbish stories as I know the truth. We are together and I will soon meet him.

When Salman got angry
Salman Khan lost his cool and snapped on Imam Siddiqui on the sets of the latest season of Bigg Boss after being provoked by the latter. Imam was rude to Khan and said that he had played a huge role in the success of SRK and Preity Zinta's careers. Salman said that was not true and SRK as well as Preity had made it on their own because of their hardwork and support of the fans. However, Salman resumed shooting a few hours later.
Not happy: Salman Khan All about
confidence
Neha Dhupia is very stylish and dresses in a unique manner. She says only when one feels confident about oneself can one wear stylish clothes and carry them off. Without confidence, clothes and accessories cannot do anything for
anybody.
Decking up: Neha Dhupia Grey matter!
Anushka Sharma found it very hard to play Bijlee because she is a grey character and you have to read between the lines.
She has many layers to her and Anushka was drained after doing the movie. She even wanted to quit midway because Bijlee did not come naturally to her unlike her other characters so far! Good going
Sahil Anand, who played Varun Dhawan's sidekick in Student of The Year, has bagged two more films. One of the movies is called Bang Bang Bangkok, which is a copy of The Hangover 2 and stars new model-turned-actors. Kareena Kapoor congratulated him after seeing the movie and he was recently linked with Sana Saeed. Apparently, he is married.
Well done: Sahil Anand
