Youth killed in train accident
Dera Bassi, December 30 Parveen was employed at a factory near Dera Bassi. His body was found in pieces on the railway track. The railway police personnel Rashpal Singh informed that the police received the information about the incident this morning. The accident occurred near Bakarpur railway crossing today around 9 am. The relatives of the victim said that victim had got married three months ago. The police has taken an action under Section 174 of the CrPC. The body of the victim has been handed over to the relatives after conducting the postmortem examination. Protest against Delhi gang rape Dera Bassi residents from different organisations organised a protest march against the Delhi gang rape. They also paid tributes to the victim, who died in Singapore hospital on Saturday. The protesters demanded the death sentence to the accused of the gang rape as early as possible. The protesters also demanded the strict law for the protection of women in the Indian society. |

Banur, December 30 As per information, nearly 8 persons, who were going in their Alto and Indica cars were stopped by the ETO, Jaswinger Singh Mavi, near Banur for checking. During the checking, they suddenly started hitting the car of the excise officer with iron rods and threatened him with dire consequences. |

Crime cases on the rise
Mohali, December 30 The police said the total number of cases (all categories) registered till December 15 was 2,670 against 2,183 last year. The cases traced in 2012 numbered 2,226 against 1,806 in the previous year. The police registered 415 cases of cheating in 2012 against 288 last year. Most of these were related to persons being duped of large sums of money on the pretext of sending them abroad. Under the NDPS Act, the cases registered rose to from 22 in 2011 to 57 this year, an over twofold increase, and in the case of burglaries from 130 to 163. Cases of rape dropped from 28 to 22 this year. However, the data does not indicate any cases relating to the flesh trade. Seizures made by the police under the NDPS Act included 1.880 kg of heroin, 6.910 kg of charas, 10.370 kg of opium and 99 gm of smack. Under the Arms Act, the seizures included 30 pistols/ revolvers and 96 cartridges with the number of cases registered rising from 14 last year to 23 in 2012. The district police has to its credit the arrest of Kulwant Singh, allegedly a member of the Babbar Khalsa International, in September and the solving of 20 of the 22 cases of murder registered till December 15. Besides, according to the data put out by the Police Department, during this year it could solve all cases of abduction (18), kidnapping (27), poisoning (13), dacoity (2) and under the NDPS Act. The police has also claimed to have caught a gang of vehicle lifters, one of looters and three of snatchers. SSP Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said that despite there being a shortage of 189 personnel, including 13 thanedars, 37 ASIs and 139 “havaldars”, the police managed to check crime. |

PNB win hockey tournament
Chandigarh, December 30 ONGC team did the first goal but the superb performance by PNB team in the later game clinched them victory. The tournament was organised by the Rock Rovers Hockey club, Chandigarh.
The winning team received prize money Rs 75,000 and runner up got Rs 50,000. EME hockey team got Dr BL Gupta Memorial Fair Play trophy. Chief Guest Madan Mohan Mittal, Minister for Health Punjab gave away the prizes to the teams and other officials. — TNS

City shooter Smit bags silver in national championship
Chandigarh, December 30 Had it not been for a single point in the qualifiers, Smit might well have been national champion but it was Samrala-based shooter Parampal Singh Guron who shot a 120 + 25 in the qualifiers and finals respectively to clinch the gold. Smit meanwhile shot a 25 in the final, beating defending champ Allan Daniel Peoples 2-1 in the shoot-off. The 22-year-old replicated his success as he won a silver in the last edition also after emerging winner in a four-way tie for the medal. A DAV College, Sector 10 pass out, Singh, hit a purple patch earlier this month as he won two medals in the prestigious shooting competitions held in New Moti Bagh Palace on Tuesday. In teams event Smit combined with Mairaj Khan, and Man Singh to clinch silver medal for India in the ongoing second Asian Shotgun Championship at the New Moti Bagh Palace in Patiala. He then represented the New Moti Bagh Gun Club along with Mairaj Khan and Man Singh to a silver medal in the Grand Prix event being held along with the Asian Championship. The ongoing national championship has seen Punjab shooters doing well in the senior and junior category as well. While Guron won gold in men’s skeet event, Patiala girl Henna Sidhu won a gold in the women’s air pistol competition by shooting 383+ 99.5 in the qualifiers and finals respectively. Shooting with a Beretta DT-10 shotgun, he had shot down a gold medal in the junior men’s category of skeet event in the 53rd National Shooting Championship at the very same venue in 2009. Smit shot into limelight in South Asian Federation Games in 2008 when at the tender age of 17 he won a bronze medal for India. Panchkula, December 30 After winning the toss St Stephions Champions elected to bat first and piled a huge total of 212/8 in allotted 30 overs. For the winning side, Prashant scored 50 striking one six and seven massive fours. He was accompanied by Gurpreet scoring 47 runs with three sixes and three fours. For the bowling side, only Shahrukh claimed 3 wickets giving away 33 runs. While chasing the target Bharti Vij Warriors was able to score only 135 runs at the loss of 8 wickets. While chasing a small target Baptist felt difficult to achieve it because of Akash's beautiful bowling spell, he took 3 wickets giving away 19 runs and even Vinay took 2 for 31 runs. Shemrock School lift basketball trophy
Chandigarh, December 30 The final match was played between St Stephen School, Sector 45, (TOGAN) and Shemrock Cagers of Shemrock School and had a tough where the Shemrock Cagers struggled and played very well later, won by 43-41. Pushpinder wins bodybuilding championship
Chandigarh, December 30 KK Khandelwal, principal secretary to the CM was the chief guest on the occasion. He gave away the prices to the winners.
