Fire at showroom in Ambala
Tribune News Service

Ambala, December 26
Goods worth several crores of rupees were destroyed in a fire at a shoes showroom near Halwai Bazaar in Ambala Cantonment early Wednesday morning.

The fire, which broke out at around 1.30 AM, soon engulfed the whole showroom reducing the goods to ashes.

Brij Mohan Soni, the owner of the showroom, said he received a call from the watchman that thick smoke was emanating from the shop. He immediately reached the spot, along with his brother at around 2.30 AM, and found that the fire had spread across the shop.

The fire also affected the adjoining shops in the area. As many as 13 fire tenders were pressed into service to douse the flames, which arrived at the spot from Ambala City, Cantonment, Shahbad, Kurukshetra, Naraingarh, and Air Force Station, Kalpi. It took more than eight hours for these fire tenders to douse the fire.

The Fire Department said fire fighters had to face a lot of difficulties in dousing the flames due to narrow lanes. The fire was brought under control around 8.30 AM.

Ambala Cantonment MLA Anil Vij also reached the spot. He said fire-fighting staff was not fully trained to control the fire. He said a similar fire incident was reported in 1972 when nearly 20 shops in the same area were gutted due to limited space for the entry.

He demanded that arrangements should be made for the proper entry of automobiles in the markets during emergencies.

Passion and experiment are two different terms. But for these three women participating in the 4th edition of the Old Yadvindrian’s Association (OYA) Chandigarh Adventure Motocross on experiment basis turned into their new passion.

A teacher by profession, 23-year-old Amanpreet Kaur, had never thought of drifting all the way to a dirt track and will secure second place while participating in the event for the first time. “I have never participated in car racing activities. Although being a regular road driver I was confident of performing well but driving down to dirttrack left me with an amazing experience. My father asked me to participate in the event and now I just wanted to be part of a regular racing team. I am looking forward to nurture my skills in the car racing world,” said Amanpreet.

Another teacher, a new entry to the car-racing world added, “It was a great and memorable experience. My husband, who is part of the event, has motivated me to participate in the event. Now, I just wanted to be a regular part of the racing events. The drifts were hard to handle but as a beginner, I have justified my part,” said 38-year-old Kamal, a teacher.

The two amateur drivers faced a tough resistance from the 35-year-old professional car racer, Nidhi Aulukh. “Racing is my passion and it runs out through my family. Being a sports person, it always becomes a priority to experiment new things and after marriage my husband’s interest in racing let me to opt for it.
