Miscreants fire at police party

Dera Bassi, December 24
Some miscreants fired at a police party near Gholu Majra village at a checkpoint on Sunday night. The accused, who were going in an Alto car, from the Dera Bassi side to Ambala side on the National Highway, were stopped by a police party for checking when they fired a shot at the police party.

Informing about the incident, SSP Mohali, Gurpreet Singh Bhullar, said that a police party led by SHO Gurvant Singh had been deputed for checking near Gholu Majra village on the Ambala-Chandigarh road last night, which later arrested one accused, who was in the car and has recovered one revolver and five live cartridges from his possession.

The police has registered a case against all these accused under Section 307, 353,186 and the Arms Act. During the investigation, it was revealed that some booked accused had already been wanted in other criminal activities.

Punjabi singer casts a spell

Rupnagar Press Club organised a cultural evening and felicitation function here last night. Punjab Minister for Health and Family Welfare Madan Mohan Mittal was the chief guest on the occasion while Ropar MLA Dr Daljit Singh Cheema presided over the function.

District Press Club Khanewal (Pakistan) were scheduled to attend the function. But due to delay in clearance of their visas, they could not make it to the programme.

He said that there was need to increase people to people contact between India and Pakistan for improving their relations, which would be extremely beneficial for Punjab.

On the occasion, Punjabi Sufi Singer Kanwar Grewal enthralled the audience with his popular sufi numbers including ‘Sahmney hove yaar tan nachna painda hai’, ‘Nan jaain mastan de vehre’, ‘Challa’.

Dance items mark Christmas celebrations

Kangaroo Kids Pre School today celebrated Christmas and annual sports day on the school premises. The school was decorated on the eve with the happy sound of pealing bells, lights sparkling everywhere, and hymns of joy and peace. Children came in fancy dresses matching the occasion and performed a play “The Silent Night”.

Tiny-tots also presented dance performances, which were applauded by the parents. Santa Claus distributed gifts and candies to the children. Students enjoyed fun sporting events at the school grounds, while the visitors' race involving parents remained the highlight of the day.

Scholar Fields Public School

Students of Scholar Fields Public School also celebrated Christmas with great joy. All the tiny-tots were dressed in Santa Claus attire.

On the occasion, children sang carol songs. Chocolates and candies were also distributed by Santa.

Two cases of snatching, robbery reported from city

Chandigarh, December 24
Tall claims made by the Chandigarh police regarding strengthening the security on the city roads seem to fall flat. Yesterday, a snatching incident was reported in Sector 42 in the city, while a man was robbed of Rs 2,200 near Hallo Majra on the same day.

The UT police has stepped up security by deploying PCRs at 59 major roundabouts and light points in the city to check crime, but the efforts seem to have proved futile.

Anita, a resident of Buterela village, near Sector 42, said a motorcycle-borne youth sped away after snatching her purse, containing a mobile phone, gold earrings, two ATM cards and Rs 250 cash, near the Sector 42 lake.

The complainant failed to note down the registration number of the vehicle.

A case has been registered against the youth at the Sector 36 Police Station and an inquiry has been initiated.

In another incident, Pawan Singh, a resident of Halo Majra village, said two youths, Rana and Deepak, robbed him of Rs 2,200 and also threatened him with dire consequences.

The incident took place near Hallo Majra, while the PCR vehicle was stationed at the Hallo Majra light point.

A case under various sections of the IPC has been registered against them at the Sector 31 Police Station and an inquiry has been initiated.

Man held for engaging juveniles for thefts

Chandigarh, December 24
The UT police has arrested a resident of West Bengal who used to engage juveniles for carrying out thefts in various parts of the city. A stolen scooter and mobile phones were recovered from his possession.

According to the police, the accused, identified as Roshan Lal, a resident of a village in Vardman district, West Bengal, was arrested near a bridge at Sector 23 here with a scooter bearing a fake registration number. The accused was presently residing at Ram Darbar, Phase-II.

Police officials said they had apprehended some juveniles a few days ago, who disclosed to the police about the accused.

The police later recovered 25 cellphones, one camera and a wrist watch from the possession of the accused.

With the arrest of the accused, the police is hopeful of cracking some to the recent cases of thefts reported at wedding functions in various parts of the city.

65-yr-old man arrested for eve-teasing

Chandigarh, December 24
Bala Guru, a 65-year-old man, was arrested for allegedly eve-teasing an eight-year-old girl of a sitting judge of Saharanpur, UP, at the Sukhna Lake today.

Police officials said the victim was skating with her brother in the presence of her mother when the accused committed the crime. The incident took place around 12 pm. The victim’s mother informed the police about the incident.

Police officials said an FIR was registered against the accused at the Sector 3 Police Station. He was immediately arrested after receiving the complaint from the victim’s mother. The accused was later released on bail.

Bala Guru, a resident of BDC, Sector 26, was working as a gardener at the Sukhna Lake on a contractual basis for the past several years.

‘Mismanagement’ DELAYS HOCKEY OPENER

The first match of 42nd SN Vohra All-India Gurmit Memorial Hockey Tournament started late today as the ground staff of Sports Complex, Sector 42, had failed to ready the field.

The delay in starting of the first match compelled the players to wait for two hours. "The ground staff of the complex had failed to ready the ground on time due to absence of their local manager. After the matter was brought to the notice of joint director, sports, the ground staff admitted their mistake and marked the arena. The match was held but with a delay," said Anil Vohra, organising secretary of the tournament.

In the first match of the day, Ropar Hawks defeated CISF by 6-2. The match finished at 2-2 in the stipulated time of 70 minutes. However, during the tie-breaker, the Ropar managed to win the match. Sarabjit Singh opened the account for wining side in the 15th minute while Mangara Munda of CISF leveled the score in the 41st minute of the match. After five minutes, Parteek Kumar scored the lead for CISF but the Ropar team saved their day after a fine contribution by Gurpinder Singh 54th minute.

In the second match, the team of PSEB, Patiala, registered an outright win over Signals, Jalandhar, by 2-0. Amandeep put the team ahead in the 47th minute of the match while Balwinder doubled the lead in the 54th minute of the match.

In the seond match, Sahil Jaibhagwan of Haryana beat Ayush Kanungo of Madhya Pradesh by 21-15 and 21-4 while Udhav Sehgal thrashed Vinayak Vyas by 21-14, 17-21 and 21-14.

Chandigarh, December 24
Government Model Senior Secondary School, Karsan, conducted an annual sports meet for the second consecutive year. The annual sports meet was conducted with an aim to encourage students of periphery area towards sports. Upkar Singh, director, public instruction, inaugurated the meet. 

During the meet various sports events, including 50 m race, long jump, back race, slow cycling, lemon race and spoon race was conducted. Out of the four participating houses the Sky House won the overall trophy.
