No gradation certificates for kabaddi, kho-kho players
Chandigarh, December 9 Reforming the rules, four years ago, the officials of the respective department have kept both the games out of the grading policy after declaring them non-Olympic events. Notably, cricket, despite being a non-Olympic event has been kept under the grading policy leaving many sports experts in deep thought over the official step. “Games like kho-kho and kabaddi are not recognised by the International Olympic Committee. They do not fall under the charter of Olympics. We provide grading to only those games that are recognised by the international committee,” said JDS Sidhu, joint director sports of UT sports department. When asked about cricket being included in the grading list, he said: “It’s a mass game and through special administrative approval, we have added it. Many people play cricket and being so popular we have awarded it a graded sports status,” said the official. The Sports Complex, Sector 42, (head office of the sports department) from where the official staff functions witnessed a total fall of almost 60 kabaddi players. Apart from organising state championships various local level tournaments are organised and also the inter-school tournament witnesses almost 30 teams in each group. But still, the officials keep kabaddi and kho-kho away from being declared as a mass game. “Earlier, both the games were under the grading policy but I don’t know the exact reason, why it has been pulled out. Surely, the game is a mass game. Like every other game, our players also attend international, national camps and participate in other local tournaments. The players might not be rich enough to showcase their expensive bats or something but they are powerful enough to play hard and make the game interesting. Getting gradation is a player’s right and it supports his or her academic career,” said a coach. “There should be proper criteria to judge a game for keeping it under the sports gradation policy. In city, there is no association of cricket and half of the tournaments are non-recognised, so the official should look into that aspect also,” said Moti, a local Kabaddi player, who attended
junior and senior Indian camp twice. Other players seconded her and said, “The games should fall under the grading policy. If the officials are following any charter then it should be applicable to every game. They should not treat us badly.” The UT Sports Department might have kept certain games out of the grading policy. But the department fails to convey it to the masses in right manner. Providing wrong information, the website of the UT Administration Sports Department clearly mentions games like kabaddi (national style) and chess under the grading policy. According to sources, the website was last updated in the year 2007 and after that no changes have been made. “The website carries wrong information as has not been updated since 2007. The games like chess and kabaddi are no more part of the sports grading policy,” said an official of the sports
department. |
