Capescape
Winter has set in and what better way to brave the chill then with a stylish collection of capes, cloaks and stoles.
Right from the tailored ones to the traditional prints; gothic, bright and digital ones, capes, cloaks and stoles are the thing to throw over your shoulders for a chic yet warm look.
Wide choice
Talk of styles on the runways and you have a lot of choices, right from the shirt-style capes featuring a belt to the ones in bold stitching. But remember, the latest styles of capes work only for women with curves since they are styled for a fit body. "Capes these days are coming with belts, buttons and even zips, they no more have the 'fit for the fat' look. So, when choosing a cape make sure you have your silhouette at show and look for details that suit your body type," says Geet Sethi from Espirit, India. She adds, "Belts are big this season, so a belt can be strapped over a cape for that well-defined silhouette. Sleeves too are making some styles in capes (although capes have been without sleeves all this while)." While the cape has moved over the vampire look and has been accepted well, it's the capelets that one should look out for this winter. Cloak is another variety that is similar to a cape, but it is typically longer and is a sleeveless garment. Ponchos too can be seen in stores this winter.
Stole the show
Stealing the show from shawls it's the stoles that are more in vogue. And when talking of stoles, there is a variety to be explored. Right from pashmina silk to silk wool and even yak wool, the prints have moved from traditional to digital to floral; and more ornate with the use of silk and gotta patti on borders to swarvoski and sequins. "Digital patterns are much in vogue and so are the ones with lace, swarvoski, sequins; those with brocade and silk borders cannot be ignored also," says Rashi Setia, who does stoles under the brand name Elegance by Rashi Setia from her home in Sector 8, Chandigarh. For more variety in stoles visit the Kala Gram, Chandigarh, where you can find Kashmiri print pashmina silk stoles to yak wool and pure silk ones.

German connection
Claudia Ciesla is a big dreamer and it's her dreams that have got her entry into the big, glitzy lanes of Bollywood. Currently looking forward to the audiences' reaction to Balma in Khiladi 786 that releases on Friday, this firang item girl wants to make it to the top.
At the same time, she is pretty aware that the film industry has only so much that it offers to foreign actresses. Facing challenges is what she likes and is preparing well for the journey that lies ahead. In Chandigarh on Wednesday Claudia opens up about her life, dreams and more. Facing the camera is what she always wanted to do. But convincing her disciplinarian dad back in Germany was not that easy. Doing her studies through correspondence, she started modelling at the age of 15 and has not looked back. Bigg Boss became her ticket to India, an experience she terms as rich, "Spending some 10 weeks in the company of strangers was intimidating to begin with. I did not know the language; bereft of my family and friends, stripped off my routine and values did get frustrating. But then it was also the Big house where I made my first friends." Claudia stayed back post the reality show. Modelling, stage shows and acting have kept her occupied ever since. With a Punjabi film Yaar Pardesi that released this August in her kitty, she has debuted as an item girl with Balma. "I am immensely proud of being the item girl of Khiladi 786. Today when top heroines Kareena and Katrina are doing item songs, I consider myself lucky to have bagged the chance." In the same breath, she clarifies, that Kareena and Katrina are also her idols from whom she has a lot to learn. Confidence, dance skills and flexibility are the key characteristics that Claudia lists as a must-have in an item girl. "Shooting the song has been a fun experience. Choreographer Ganesh Ji narrated his vision to me and I guess I have lived
it well." From here, she wants to move on to acting and is preparing well. Having done a course from Anupam Kher's acting school, Claudia goes to see every film — super-hit, flop or disaster. "I watch legendary films at home in my free time, note down the dialogue and practice," says Claudia who is increasingly getting comfortable in Hindi. "For Yaar Pardesi, I said every single dialogue in Punjabi," she exclaims. Balma has got a few offers from South-India as well. And she wants to choose her roles wisely. "I know being a foreigner there would only be so much that I can do. What I am looking for is a great script and a director who can deliver it. Role, big or small; Hindi, Punjabi or Tamil is secondary to me." In Mumbai, she has created her own small, beautiful world with a couple of close friends. "India is now home, Germany more of a holiday home with family. I am glad that I am living my dream. And I have made my parents proud," she dishes out a delectable smile as she gets back to the eager shutterbugs trying to capture her. mona@tribunemail.com

Sporty spirit
The glamour quotient of Ludhiana goes up every now and then with mega art exhibitions or visits by famous fashion designers. This time though, all the glamour is on the field of kabaddi. All because of the girls team from Denmark that is here to take part in a women 'kabbadi' event!
Robust in health, Marie and Joy, the captain and vice-captain, along with the rest of the team, seem to be thoroughly enjoying the warm December sun in India. "This sport became popular in Denmark after it was exhibited in their fairs that are held twice a year," says Vikram, the coach who has had the team practicing hard since the last three months. Overawed by the infrastructure and warm Indian hospitality, players Hannah and Marie echo, "Interaction with Punjabi players was fantastic and we have learnt a lot. This weather is a treat for us as back home it must be snowing." Under the tutelage of the Sports Council, Denmark, these girls are all semi-professionals looking to be lecturers, coaches or even lawyers. Painting a pretty picture on the field and giving the game a bright overture, these sporty gals were sure the cynosure of many eyes!

A ritual called love
Manpriya Singh If the Shakespearean proverb is to be extended, a pet would seem just as sweet if called by any other name. What’s in a name? Laughs Minal Mehra, director, Aakaar Interiors and Design Studio, “We experimented with three names for our nine- month-old, black and tan Dachshund, before settling in for Jacky.” There’s a story behind each one. “We originally named him Casper, but then our maid couldn’t pronounce that and she would always call him Bhaskar. It was then changed to Jimmy and when my sister came down from Dubai, she found the name a little gay. It then had to be something similar to Jimmy, so finally my male Dachshund is called Jacky.” Like, we said, there’s a story behind each one. Love me, love my dog
The love for dogs and pets in the house are more of a ritual than an option. “Throughout my life, we’ve had dogs. The love for animals is inherited. We’ve had rabbits and some chicks as well. In fact, at one point of time, for a week, we had five dogs in the house,” she beams, also an active member of PFA. “I even take care of three four stray dogs. Now, that the winter is going to set in, I’ve already ordered for blankets and jackets for them.” If not at home, charity certainly begins at heart. “There was a Chihuahua, a Rottweiler, a Pug, courtesy friends and family who were travelling at that point of time. There were more dogs in the house than members.” As for Jacky, he’s a ‘complete riot’, or as she likes to call him. “He’ll demand food, and even if you mention the word ball, there’s a complete ruckus in the house. You just have to play with him, otherwise he’ll run like mad. He’ll come and drop the ball in your lap.” In strict contrast with her previous female Dachshund, Cathy! She recalls, “There is absolutely no comparison between my previous dog and the current one. Cathy was a delicate little thing. Everybody would pamper her silly.” She laughs, “She was like my daughter. We had a proper name keeping ceremony for her…When I lost her; my family supported me completely in my grief.” Yours faithfully
The responsibility is worth the rewards. “The best thing about owning a pet is companionship. There’s no companion like them. Every time you get back home, they welcome you, all super excited.” Bubbles, a grey and a black colour cat, further completes the picture. Bubbles is a dog in the disguise of a cat. When Cathy was there, we had a dog and a cat living together happily.” manpriya@tribunemail.com

A date with Divya
Divya Dutta An invite for the state dinner in Goa by Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar for the closing ceremony of IFFI was something I took as a go, do your job and come back trip, not realising what it had in store for me. As I was asking the organiser to book me a morning return ticket, my mom intervened, ‘why don't you come back in the evening and spend some time with yourself.’ “What? Spend time by myself? I will get bored ma!” I said. “Learn to be your best friend beta and enjoy your own company once in a while. Go on a date with Divya Dutta.” I love my mom for telling me things which open me up more to life and view it differently. The dinner was at an awesome fort in Goa attended by many celebs and dignitaries—Shah Rukh Khan, Ekta Kapoor, Meera Nair and Vishaal Bhardwaj to name a few. My red saree looked lovely as I was flooded with compliments. After dinner, Ekta Kapoor and a few other friends decided to go out and I was invited too. “I am in a saree,” I said. Saree in a pub? Everyone said ‘this is Goa, it’s totally fine’ and so I went. Of course, I was the only one in a saree and an actor. So, there were heads turning to look at me but the look was of appreciation, of course for looking nice and as an Indian with a carefree attitude, who was having fun in a saree! We danced and had a blast. A great evening with friends. The following day I wore my tee and shorts, my cap, applied sunscreen lotion, grabbed my favourite book and headed for a beautiful private beach. I grabbed a drink and went kayaking just by myself. Blue sky, blue sea, quietness, birds and me…I went pretty far till my arms got tired rowing! Back at the beach, I lay down on the sand with my book and read. Something I hadn't been able to do for a long time. Then later I asked my driver to take me to my favourite shack which prepared awesome prawns. I had always gone with friends there. This was my first time alone but strangely I was loving it. I had a sumptuous meal staring at the waves coming and teasing my feet. I generally chatted with a few foreigners who were there on a holiday. And then I heard my driver calling out, ‘madam, flight ka time ho gaya. Really? Time had flown. I had had a superb time. I had gotten over the biggest awkwardness of holidaying alone. Yes, I was missing, not someone else this time but myself. I had actually enjoyed this date with Divya Dutta! Thanks ma, for reintroducing me to myself! (Dutta is a Bollywood actor) |

Mixing with delight
Hometel-Chandigarh organised Cake Mixing Ceremony on Wednesday. Guest of Honor for this important occasion was Father Dominic Bosco, Parish Priest of St Anne’s Church, initiated the process.
Abhinav Anand, general manager, Hometel-Chandigarh remarked, “Be it representing the harvest season or being a reason for family gathering, cake-mixing ceremony successfully marks the onset of Christmas season. It is considered to be an usher for good time and happiness. At Hometel, cake ingredients are soaked in various spirits and liquor to impart flavour and left to mature up to Christmas. These are then used by the in-house bakery to make cakes and puddings, etc.” History of the cake mixing ceremony dates back to the 17th century, when it marked the arrival of the harvest season. During this time, lots of fruits and nuts were harvested and prepared to go into the making of the traditional plum cake. While the cake mixing ritual has now acquired a social face, it has not diluted its religious importance, and it remains to be one of the most awaited events in Christian household, which marks the onset of Christmas season. — TNS

Right interval
Vishal Thukral If you are one of the million who’s made a commitment to get back in shape and has no time to reach out to the gym or the garden nearby to shed those extra calories, then home based interval training could be one option which can prove beneficial for you. Interval training
Interval training is basically an exercise which consists of activity at high intensity for a period of time, followed by low intensity of exercise for a period of time. These sets are repeated. In this method of training you can increase and decrease the intensity of your workout between aerobic (where energy is made using oxygen) and anaerobic (where energy is made in the absence of oxygen) training. Few exercises in this routine are the following: A classic cardio move, these are a fantastic way to get your heart rate up without any equipment. Aside from using a great deal of energy, these also tone the inside and outside thighs, deltoids and quads. Jumping Jack
Jumping Jack is a basic exercise with feet together, knees slightly bent and arms on the side. Jump while arms on the side and separating legs, land on forefoot with legs apart and arms overhead. Jump again. Land on forefoot with arms and legs in original position and repeat 20 to 30 times. Lateral jump
It is an exercise that builds strength within the ankles, hips and knees. It targets outer thighs, inner thighs, glutes, quads and calves, and also lightly engages the core muscles. Stand in an athletic position, knees slightly bent, hips back. Jump side to side over a line. Move at a steady and controlled pace. Do it for 20 to 30 times for one set. Jumping oblique twist
This is a great exercise for a slimmer waist for two reasons. It burns calories and it calls heavily upon the muscles that wrap around the midsection. Aside from the obliques, it also engages the glutes, calves, lower back, deltoids and quads. Stand with feet together, hands on the alternate shoulder and twist right to left at the spot. Repeat it 20 to 30 times for one set. Eat right
Be choosy about night time snacks. Mindless eating occurs most frequently after dinner when you finally sit down and relax. Sitting down with a bag of chips or cookies is an example of eating amnesia, when you mindlessly eat out of habit. Better option is to have one cup of green tea after twenty minutes of the dinner and close down the kitchen. (Thukral is an aerobic fitness trainer)

Love it or leave it
Kangna Ranaut
She likes changing her hair every now and then. Sometimes, it is straightened, at other times it is naturally curly, sometimes it is short and at other times it is long. And she dresses simply to please herself. She couldn't care less about fashion critics and spends most of her money on all things fashionable!
Deepika Padukone She is obsessed with cleanliness and needs everything to be arranged in proper order. And guess what she does not limit her obsession to her home. If she goes to her friends' houses, she starts arranging their rooms. The parents always love her for tidying the rooms! So she is always welcome.
Kareena Kapoor Khan She loves touching her hair all the time. You see this at events and in interviews, she keeps putting it to the side and running her fingers through the length of it. She is also addicted to her Blackberry messenger and Saif finds this annoying. On the plus side, she only takes ten minutes to get ready before going out.
Katrina Kaif Women blink twice as much as men and Katrina blinks twice as much as any normal woman. That is also her idea of acting sometimes, along with fluttering her lips. Another thing she does is answer Hindi questions in English. You hardly ever hear her speak Hindi on a public platform.
Anushka Sharma She is socially inept and does not like going to parties as she cannot talk to people easily. She also loves going off on holidays to mountains and hilly locations every now and then to get away from the buzz of Bollywood. Of course, she is naturally skinny and is blessed with curves too.
Going without biryani
Ranveer Singh is abstaining from normal and yummy food like biryani in order to stay in shape for Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Raam Leela. He has been working out like a maniac and watching his diet too. The director ordered biryani for the cast and crew but Ranveer did not touch it at all. So Bhansali has promised to treat him to a sumptuous meal at his favourite restaurant the day shooting wraps up.
No hair cut for Bebo
Kareena Kapoor is playing a journalist inspired by Christiane Amanpour in Prakash Jha's next political thriller. She will not cut her hair because she loves her long hair and has a glamourous role to play in the movie. She says she cannot cut her hair too short because of her shampoo brand endorsement
PC's Moroccan affair
It has been a fantastic year for actress Priyanka Chopra! After getting several accolades for her performance in Barfi, she had her momentum going with her international single In My City and now the dusky beauty is all set to spend two special days at the International Film Festival a of Marrakech in Morocco.
PC will be attending the festival where three of her Bollywood films will be screened. A source close to the actor says, “Priyanka will reach the festival late at night on December 6. On day one, Barfi! will be screened. She will be the only one from the film’s team who will be present there.” The source adds, “On day two, two of her other films — Don and Don 2 will be screened. Though Shah Rukh Khan (her co-star in the Don series) will be present at the festival during this time, Priyanka is the only one so far who has confirmed her attendance at the screening. The movie screenings on both days will be followed by a grand dinner party, which will also be attended by Priyanka. She is very excited about this as she’s being given such a wonderful treatment there.” Priyanka's next release is Krrishh 3 in Diwali 2013 and her music album will also be launched next year with much pomp and show.
Talaash is a hit!
Talaash has collected nearly Rs 50 crore in its first weekend at the box office. Its satellite rights were sold for Rs 40 crore and the film is on its way to become a hit. It got a huge opening for a non-holiday Friday.
Special appearance
Ameesha Patel is doing a ‘cute’ special appearance in Race 2 in which she gets to wear her usual tiny clothes and play dumb. She could not refuse the film when Ramesh Taurani offered it to her and had a great time shooting for her role! She is paired with Anil Kapoor in the thriller.
Playing Santa
Akshay Kumar gave his technicians on the sets of Khiladi 786 an early Christmas bonus. He distributed Rs 12, 80, 000 to 88 technicians on the last day of the shoot. So some technicians got around Rs 11 thousand while some others got around Rs 8 thousand, depending on their grade. They were all very happy.
On Express highway
After attending the Marakkech Film Festival in Morocco, Shah Rukh Khan is currently in Goa shooting for Rohit Shetty’s next film Chennai Express. The actor was awarded the prestigious Medal of Honour by the Prince of Morocco at the ongoing 12th Marrakech International Film Festival. As far as the shooting of Chennai Express is concerned, the film has a train sequence that is just similar to the iconic train scene from Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. “I am shooting so much on trains I feel I am in a constant state of training and the worst is I feel sleepy with the rhythm of their movement,” he tweeted. “Also been in Goa for over 10 days...let alone go, haven’t even see the beach...my kids would disown me if they find out,” he added. The film also stars Deepika Padukone and veteran Tamil actress Manorama.
Eddie Murphy most overpaid actor
Actor and comedian Eddie Murphy has topped this year's Forbes' list of 'most overpaid' actors in Hollywood. Murphy, 51, attained fame and success after turning out box office hits such as Dr Dolittle, Beverly Hills Cop and Coming to America. But lately, Murphy's career has collapsed, after starring in films like Imagine That, A Thousand Words and Meet Dave. Murphy managed to earn an average of just $ 2.30 at the box office for every dollar that he was paid. Murphy was also named on the Forbes annual list last year as well before climbing up to the top spot, which last year was occupied by actress Drew Barrymore. Trailing behind Murphy is Katherine Heigl, whose recent flicks, including New Year's Eve and One for the Money, only pocketed an average of $ 3.40 for every dollar she earned. Reese Witherspoon has landed on the third spot with an average $ 3.90 for every dollar she's paid from such movies as How Do You Know and This Means War. Sandra Bullock makes it to the list by landing on the fourth place with a $ 5 return for every $1 she's paid. Meanwhile, Jack Black rounded up the top five for returning only $ 5.20 for every $1 he grossed. His 2011 comedy, The Big Year, barely registered on box office though it starred actors like Steve Martin and Owen Wilson. —PTI
Aamir Khan praises Kiran Rao
He may be a perfectionist but he is not a hands-on father. Aamir Khan says that he is enjoying fatherhood to the fullest but work commitments don’t allow him to spend enough time with his son. But speaking about his wife Kiran, Aamir said that she is a hands-on mom and enjoying her motherhood to the fullest which she always desired. “I am not a hands-on dad on a daily basis. My responsibilities towards work don`t allow me to do that. But I really like to spend time with him. He is a real joy. He is a very happy child and good natured,” Aamir said. “Kiran is a hands-on mother. She is enjoying motherhood and that’s what she wants to do. Once in a while I do try and give her a break but she brushes it aside,” he said.
Justin, Jennifer throw engagement party
Actors Justin Theroux and Jennifer Aniston threw an engagement party at their Los Angeles home, almost four months after getting engaged. The 'Wanderlust' co-stars celebrated with close friends including Demi Moore, Ben Stiller, Tobey Maguire, Ellen DeGeneres and Portia di Rossi at the low-key bash, Hollywood Life reported. Theroux popped the question on a romantic
dinner date to celebrate his birthday at a restaurant in August. Aniston, 43, previously said that the proposal was a complete surprise. "It is hard to pull one over on me, where I'm not like, 'Hmm, you're acting really strange.' It was ... a very covert operation," she said. — PTI
Race is on
Deepika Padukone has taken a break from filming Raam Leela and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani to promote Race 2 in which she has a leading role opposite Saif Ali Khan. She is also looking into the online promotions herself.
Coming clean
Shah Rukh Khan is a little upset at the rumours about him and Priyanka Chopra. He is fond of her because she started her journey with the Miss World crowning and he was present there. He feels sad that all this negative buzz has spoiled their friendship a little bit. PC has always been in awe of SRK and openly admitted it. |

Laughter challenge
Kavita Kaushik is ready to tickle our funny bone with yet another comedy serial on SAB TV, Tota aur Maina. Kavita refuses to adhere to clichés; instead she continues to experiment with the diverse characters. In Tota Aur Maina, she plays the lead protagonist, a modern girl, free spirited and adventurous. A fun riot erupts when this modern ebullient girl Maina steps into Tota's simple household, and everyone struggles for equilibrium. Laden with dollops of humour garnished with a love story at its core, this show has the ability to melt your heart. Kavita Kaushik talks about her character, "Maina's character is wild and I believe it's just an extension of me. Maina is forever happy, confident, outgoing and so much fun. I am having a blast shooting for it because it's a very earthy realistic character. So it's not the witty lines that make me comical, it's my character in itself that is very funny. I had to work on my accent and learn the local dialect and I had to be trained in the ways of life there to make my character look authentic. The show is based on the lives of people in UP and that's a completely different life from what we live here in Mumbai." SAB is known for its unique flavour of comedy and even this time it lives up to its promise of delivering an absolutely entertaining comedy that explores a different sub-culture within the umbrella of Indian culture.

The year ahead
If your birthday is December 6...
Try not to get over-excited by a proposal and carefully weigh the advantages you could derive out of this collaboration. You'll find a way to link pleasure with utility. If you're going to perform a random act of kindness, don't expect anything in return. Put your focus on expressing the generous side of your nature. By releasing your expectations of others, you'll enjoy life a lot more. Money from an inheritance or legal settlement will become available, which will ease your financial fears. Don't let the word spread or an opportunistic relative will ask for a loan. You're better off putting this money into a long term savings account. Focus on your own needs and projects, even if you get multiple requests from colleagues. It may seem selfish, but you know that your own stuff is just that much more important than theirs is in the longer run. This year you could feel discouraged by the trials that concern your professional area and you'll tend to over-exaggerate them. Youngsters will finally be able to fulfill their ambitions, thanks to the favourable stars. Be aware that there are eager rivals ready to claim your territory. You must look out for your health and get enough rest because if you push yourself beyond the limit, you will jeopardise your dreams. Nervous insecurity may 'chew' away at your self-confidence. An errand may turn into a problem if it is not attended to swiftly and 'followed through to completion,' especially if it involves Sagittarius, Aries, Leo, Virgo, Gemini or Libra people. A 'big change' may be a necessity and the task of helping members to 'see and adapt' may fall in your lap. News of an important project, perhaps from overseas, will be encouraging. Investments made in new ventures are likely to bring in good returns. Hence you should try to utilise this period to your advantage. Friends are excellent at filling in the gaps, contributing advice and lending a hand when you are short on time or lack resources. Hit up Sagittarius, Gemini, Virgo and Aries friends for the best and most reliable contributions. Mood: Emotional. Compatible signs: Pisces, Gemini. Lucky colours: Silver, White. Lucky days: Tuesday and Saturday. Lucky numbers: 2, 5, 11, 17, 22.
You share your birthday with Shekhar Kapur (December 6, 1945, Lahore), nephew of Dev Anand, actor and famous director of Bandit Queen fame. He was nominated for the Academy Awards for Elizabeth. He started his career as an actor in Jaan Hazir hai. He turned director with Masoom. Shekhar's horoscope the combination of two opposite planets, Sun and Saturn, will continue to ensure his success.
