CM gives Rs 1 cr for repair of roads

Fatehgarh Sahib, December 5
On the eve of the Saheedi Jor Mela, Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal released a special grant of Rs1 crore for the repair of all link roads, leading to gurdwara Fatehgarh Sahib. Besides the repair of roads, the beautification of gurdwara would also be done, said Prof Prem Singh Chandumajra, General Secretary SAD(B) today. He said the Chief Minister had directed to make proper arrangements so that no anti-social element could take benefit.

The annual Saheedi Jor Mela will start from December 25 to 27 to commemorate the supreme sacrifice of younger "sahibjadas" of Guru Gobind Singh, who were bricked alive after they refused to embrace Islam. — OC

World AIDS Day observed

Patiala, December 5
To spread awareness about AIDS among adolescents, the World AIDS Day was celebrated today. the science department of DAV Public School, Bhupindra road, Patiala, organised various activities like multi-media presentation and poster-making competition for class IX and X students .

A team of doctors headed by Dr Veenu Tuli held an interaction with the students. —TNS

Manas strikes gold

Ambala, December 5
The Ambala Lawn Tennis Association organised the ALTA District Festival Championship at Mind Tree School, Ambala City, today. 80 players from 14 students participated in the event. The matches Under-8 category were held on round robin league system. 

Manas Gandhi of Chaman Vatika International School bagged the gold medal in the competition. The winners were honoured by Principal Sudha Mathur and the officials of the tennis association. — OC

Court sends couple back to protection home
 They had left following ill-treatment by authorities

Panchkula, December 5
One of the two couples that had left the Panchkula protection home after they were allegedly misbehaved with and were being made to starve, was sent back to the protection home by the court today. The couple had appeared before the District and Sessions Court today.

"Although we are getting food here now, the authorities are still misbehaving with us . We had complained to the DLSA; therefore, we are being ill-treated," said the newly-wed bride who did not want to be named.

Presently, just one couple is staying at the Panchkula protection home. It was on November 30 when the two couples had left the protection home saying that they were being treated like animals. They had alleged that they were being forced to sleep in a single room.

Earlier, Manbir Singh Rathi, legal aid counsel with the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), had visited the home and after finding the irregularities had reported to Chief Judicial Magistrate Jaibir Hooda, who had made a surprise check and found the same. Interestingly, the room where the couples were made to sleep, did not even have a latch.

Ambala police gets custody of robbers

A week after the UT police busted a gang from West Bengal, which was involved in over 100 incidents of robbery and snatching across the country, the Ambala police got the custody of the robbers today.

The gang of six members was taken to Ambala Cantt under transit remand by the Ambala police.

The Ambala Cantt police had demanded transit remand for investigating the Rs 5 lakh snatching case, in which the gang was involved.

The incident had taken place at the Ambala Cantt Railway Station.

The police said accused Rajiv Gawala along with Awinash Gawala, Jimmy Gawala, Munu Gawala, Rohit Gawala and Sujit Gawala was planning dacoity in Guvava Garden at Makhan Majra.

The police added that the miscreants were also planning a dacoity at State Bank of Patiala Daria village.

They have committed over 500 thefts in trains and are also suspected of killing Amarjeet Singh, owner of the Sham Fashion Mall.

Nandini Beats Harsimran

Second seed Nandini Sharma, after losing two match points in the second set made a comeback and defeated Harsimran Kaur, during the St Stephen's AITA Tennis Championship Series , being held at the CLTA and the Lake Sports Complex today. Harsimran managed to win the second set in a tie-breaker but in the final set Nandini, who was trailing by 0-3, took the lead of 5-3 and won the final set by 6-4.

On other hand, top seed Prinkle and Bhavya moved into the semifinals. Prinkle defeated Taru Ahluwalia by 4-2 and 4-1 to secure a berth in the semifinals . Bhavya Wadhawan beat Bani Singh in straight sets 6-3, 6-1 in the girls (U-16) category.

In the boys (U-16) category, top seed Paramveer Bajwa faced some resistance from Nihit Rawal . He lost the fist set by 6-7 but came back strongly to win the next two sets by 6-1 and 6-1. In the boys (U-12) category, top seed Sacchit Sharma defeated Abhimanyu Rozra by 4-1, 4-0 while Rishabh Sharda overcame MS Karthik by 5-4 and 4-1. Rishabh will face Sahishnu Sharma in the final after the latter defeated Himanshu Mor in a tie-breaker by 7-3.

Pranjay leads St John's to victory

Chandigarh, December 5
The cricket team of St John’s School, Sector 26, registered a 94-run win over Dev Samaj School during the ongoing Edmund Rice Cricket Tournament for Boys oday. A fine performance by Pranjay Sharma (83 off 48) helped the team to win the match. He also took one wicket .

After electing to bat first, the wining side posted a total of 178 runs in the allotted 20 overs. The opening pair of Pranjay and Vaibhav contributed 130 runs for the first wicket. Pranjay scored 83 off 48, inculding 14 boundaries while Vaibhav Kaushik contributed 43 off 42. For the bowling side, Tushar grabbed 2 for 30. In reply, Dev Samaj School bundled out on 83 runs with Navdeep (40) contributing the most for the team. — TNS

TT tourney from Dec 19

Chandigarh, December 5
The Chandigarh State Table Tennis Association will organise the 25th Junior and Senior Chandigarh State Table Tennis Championship from December 19 to 23.

The tournament, to be organised at the Table Tennis Hall, Sector 23, will see paddlers vying for Gurmeet Singh Grewal Memorial Trophy.

The players born on or after January 1, 1995, can participate in the junior boys’ and girls’ (U-18) category, while the players born on or after January 1, 1992, can participate in the youth boys’ and girls’ (U-21)

Saupin's outplay Mount Carmel

In the first match of the 6th RF Saupin Football Trophy , Saupin's School defeated Mount Carmel by 1-0 while in the second match of the day, Saupin's School, Mohali, defeated Ryan International by 2-0. 

In another match, Sacred Heart registered an outright win over Chitkara by 2-0 while Carmel Convent School played a goal less draw with Government Model School, Sector 22.
