2,837 students conferred degrees
Mullana (Ambala), Dec 1 DP Agrawal, chairman, Union Public Service Commission, was the chief guest, while chancellor of the university Tarsem Kumar Garg presided over the function. Delivering the convocation address, Agrawal said Haryana was emerging as an education hub of the country. He said the convocation was an occasion to bestow and confer degrees on the successful candidates, to celebrate their success and also to revitalise and rejuvenate them for their future career. He said the students were the future of the country and the mirror of society. He asked them not to adopt shortcuts in life to achieve any success. Vice-Chancellor Prof SG Damle, while briefing the annual report, said Mullana had become the nucleus of professional education and thousands of students from across the country had been taking excellent education here. Secretary of the university Sanjeev Garg, treasurer Vishal Garg and trustee Meenakshi were also present on the occasion. — OC |

Training camp for fertiliser dealers held
Fatehgarh Sahib, Dec 1 While addressing the dealers, Dr Jabir Singh Baines, chief agriculture officer, gave detailed information about the role of the Government of India (GOI) in introducing the MMS. He trained them in using the online software. He said as per the new instructions of the GOI, fertiliser dealers would have to maintain the record, relating to receipt of fertiliser, sale and stock, online. He said the GOI would deposit the subsidy amount directly in the bank accounts of dealers. Buta Singh, district manager, Shri Ram Fertiliser, Balbir Singh, GM, IFFCO, and Dr Prithi Singh interacted with the dealers.

DAV-Una wins quiz competition
Ropar, December 1 The competition was conducted mainly for class XII students of the science group (medical and non-medical stream). “Science with all its inventions and discoveries has sown the seeds of Human Excellence” was the theme of the competition “QUIZZITHON”. The first runners-up team comprising Mandeep and Saksham was also from DAV Centenary School, Una, which won a cash prize of Rs 10,000. The second runners-up team comprising Gurmeet and Sidhart was from Bhagwan Mahavir Senior Secondary School, Banga, which won a prize of Rs 5,000, along with an appreciation letter. |

Woman killed in accident
Zirakpur, December 1 As per information, the accident occurred when the victim, who was riding pillion on the scooter, was first hit by a truck from behind and then crushed to death on the Zirakpur-Baltana Road. Mahinder Singh Rawat, husband of the victim, who was riding the scooter, escaped unhurt. The police has registered a case against the truck driver under Sections 279 and 304-A of the IPC. The police said the dead body of the victim had been kept in the Civil Hospital, Dera Bassi, and would be handed over to the family members after conducting the postmortem examination
yesterday. |

Suit, purse snatched in Panchkula
Panchkula, December 1 The victim, identified as Bimla Mahajan, (58), is a resident of GH 37, MDC, was coming home after some shopping when two unidentified youths on a bike snatched her bag and fled. “I was coming walking with the suit when two youths, wearing a helmet came from behind and snatched the packet. I shouted and said that there was only a suit. But still they fled saying it is fine with them,” said Mahajan. “It shows the extent of police security that openly, the snatchers are snatching whatever you have. It clearly shows they are left with no fear of police,” added Mahajan. |
