2,837 students conferred degrees

Mullana (Ambala), Dec 1
MM University, Mullana, conferred degrees on 2,837 graduate and postgraduate students at its convocation function held here today. As many as 19 students were also awarded PhD in various streams.

DP Agrawal, chairman, Union Public Service Commission, was the chief guest, while chancellor of the university Tarsem Kumar Garg presided over the function.

Delivering the convocation address, Agrawal said Haryana was emerging as an education hub of the country.

He said the convocation was an occasion to bestow and confer degrees on the successful candidates, to celebrate their success and also to revitalise and rejuvenate them for their future career.

He said the students were the future of the country and the mirror of society.

He asked them not to adopt shortcuts in life to achieve any success.

Vice-Chancellor Prof SG Damle, while briefing the annual report, said Mullana had become the nucleus of professional education and thousands of students from across the country had been taking excellent education here.

Secretary of the university Sanjeev Garg, treasurer Vishal Garg and trustee Meenakshi were also present on the occasion. — OC

Training camp for fertiliser dealers held

Fatehgarh Sahib, Dec 1
To impart training to fertiliser dealers about the newly introduced Mobile Monitoring System (MMS), the district Agriculture Department organised a training camp for wholesale and retail fertiliser dealers of the district at the farmer's training centre, Smashed Nagar, today. Hundreds of dealers participated in the camp.

While addressing the dealers, Dr Jabir Singh Baines, chief agriculture officer, gave detailed information about the role of the Government of India (GOI) in introducing the MMS.

He trained them in using the online software. He said as per the new instructions of the GOI, fertiliser dealers would have to maintain the record, relating to receipt of fertiliser, sale and stock, online. He said the GOI would deposit the subsidy amount directly in the bank accounts of dealers.

Buta Singh, district manager, Shri Ram Fertiliser, Balbir Singh, GM, IFFCO, and Dr Prithi Singh interacted with the dealers. — OC

DAV-Una wins quiz competition

Ropar, December 1
The team of DAV Senior Secondary School, Una, comprising Deepak and Sahil, won a cash prize of Rs 15,000, along with an appreciation letter, at a state-level science quiz competition series-3 held at the Rayat Technology Centre of Excellence at Ropar Campus here today.

The competition was conducted mainly for class XII students of the science group (medical and non-medical stream).

“Science with all its inventions and discoveries has sown the seeds of Human Excellence” was the theme of the competition “QUIZZITHON”.

The first runners-up team comprising Mandeep and Saksham was also from DAV Centenary School, Una, which won a cash prize of Rs 10,000. The second runners-up team comprising Gurmeet and Sidhart was from Bhagwan Mahavir Senior Secondary School, Banga, which won a prize of Rs 5,000, along with an appreciation letter.

IIT-Ropar emerge winner

Ropar, December 1
Abhisaar Sharma and Abhishek Kumar Arora studying in the fifth semester of the Computer Science Department of the IIT-Ropar have secured first place in the recently held all-India-level programming contest, “Infosys Hashers 2012”. The team won a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh for their achievement.

From teams all around the country, 20 were shortlisted from the prelims to enter the mains, in which IIT-Ropar topped the contest, while IIT-Madras stood second. — TNS

Woman killed in accident
Our Correspondent

Zirakpur, December 1
A woman was killed in a road accident near Zirakpur this evening. The deceased was identified as Pushpa Rawat, wife of Mahinder Singh Rawat, a resident of Baltana.

As per information, the accident occurred when the victim, who was riding pillion on the scooter, was first hit by a truck from behind and then crushed to death on the Zirakpur-Baltana Road.

Mahinder Singh Rawat, husband of the victim, who was riding the scooter, escaped unhurt.

The police has registered a case against the truck driver under Sections 279 and 304-A of the IPC.

The police said the dead body of the victim had been kept in the Civil Hospital, Dera Bassi, and would be handed over to the family members after conducting the postmortem examination yesterday.

Suit, purse snatched in Panchkula

In a snatching incident, two youths snatched a ladies suit along with the purse near Group Housing Society 29, Mansa Devi Complex, Sector 5, Panchkula.

The victim, identified as Bimla Mahajan, (58), is a resident of GH 37, MDC, was coming home after some shopping when two unidentified youths on a bike snatched her bag and fled.

“I was coming walking with the suit when two youths, wearing a helmet came from behind and snatched the packet. I shouted and said that there was only a suit. But still they fled saying it is fine with them,” said Mahajan.

“It shows the extent of police security that openly, the snatchers are snatching whatever you have. It clearly shows they are left with no fear of police,” added Mahajan.

Kabaddi tourney to begin on December 6

The Chandigarh Kabaddi Association will organise a State Championship for Boys and Girls (sub-junior, junior and senior) categories from December 6 to 8, at Kabaddi Coaching Center of Sports Complex, Sector 42, here.

During the State Championship (sub-junior, junior and senior) for Boys and Girls, the organisers will also select teams for participating in the upcoming national games. The teams are advised to participate in proper kit and should confirm their entry with the organisers before December 4.

Eligibility

Sub-Junior (Boys and Girls)-50kg or below and born on or after January 1,1997. Junior (Boys)-65 kg or below and born on or after January 1,1993. Junior (girls)-60kg or below and born on or after January 1,1993. Men-80 kg or below; women-70 kg or below.

The Kho-Kho team of SGGS College, Sector 26, won the Panjab University Inter-College Kho-Kho Championship for Men, here today.

The team of DAV College, Sector 10, and Post Graduate Government College, Sector 46, (PGGC-46) secured second and third places respectively. The team of PU Campus managed to attain fourth place in the tourney.

Results:

PGGC-46 beat PU Campus by 1 turn and 4 points; SGGS College, Sector 26, beat DAV College, Sector 10, by 1 turn and 8 points; DAV College, Sector 10, beat PU Campus by 2 points; SGGS College, Sector 26, beat Post Graduate Government College, Sector 46, by 1 turn and 13 points.

Softball tourney
PGGCG-11 thrash SGGS-26

In the ongoing Panjab University Inter-College Softball Championship for Women, the team of Post Graduate Government College for Girls, Sector 11, (PGGCG-11) defeated SGGS College for Women, Sector 26, by 17-3, on campus grounds, here today.

For the wining side, Amarjeet score three runs while Ritu, Gagandeep, Priyanka, Pooja, Indu, Rita and Suman contributed two runs each in the Inter-College Softball Championship.

On other hand, for loosing side Aditi reduced the margin after contributing three runs.
