Gang of thieves busted
4 held; used to steal vehicles, electricity cables

With the arrest of four persons, the district police has busted a gang involved in the theft of vehicles and electricity cables from tubewells. The police has recovered three motorcycles, spare parts of motorcycles and cables from their possession. The police has also arrested two drug peddlers.

Addressing the mediapersons, SSP HS Mann said complaints regarding the theft of electricity wires from tubewells were being received from the rural areas. A special team was constituted to keep a watch on the cable thieves.

He said the police got a tip-off and succeeded in arresting one Veerpal Singh, resident of Naulakha. During his interrogation, Veerpal revealed that he, along with his relative Baljinder Singh, resident of Kurali, and servants Ajay Mahonto and Shiv Kumar, residents of Bihar, used to steal electric cables from tubewells. They used to sell aluminium and copper extracted from these cables in markets.

Veerpal also admitted that they were involved in the theft of vehicles, particularly motorcycles.

They had stolen two Splendor and one Discover motorcycle from Nand Pur Kalour during a fair.

The police recovered these motorcycles and spare parts of motorcycles, along with copper, aluminium and electricity cables, from their possession.

He said the police had also arrested two drug peddlers involved in the sale of drugs during a routine check.

It also recovered 50 kg of poppy husk, 300 grams of narcotic powder, intoxicant capsules and tablets from their possession.

The arrested accused had been identified as Pargat Singh, resident of Behrampur village, and Ajay Kumar. Both were booked under the NDPS Act. They were produced in the court and sent to judicial custody.

Terminated PSEB clerks threaten to immolate themselves

Mohali, November 26
High drama witnessed on the premises of Punjab School Education Board when the members of 134 Terminated Clerk Association forcibly entered the complex and threatened to immolate themselves.

Some of the agitated members were carrying bottles full of petrol and matchboxes in their hands. During the protest, the president of the association Raghbir Singh Rana got unconscious and was taken to the Civil Hospital.

Raising slogans against the Punjab Government, the terminated clerks were demanding to reinstate them in jobs.

The agitators were pacified only when they were told that a three-member panel, comprising Education Secretary, Principal Secretary to Punjab Chief Minister and Punjab advocate general, would meet tomorrow at 5 pm to resolve the issue. — TNS

Commissioner takes suggestions from villagers

Banur, November 26
Patiala division Commissioner, AS Pannu, listened to the suggestions of people of over 28 villages which have been facing the attachment problem with Patiala and Mohali districts.

Though these villages were attached with the Mohali district yet these were covered under the Rajpura assembly constituency. On this basis, the Banur police station was also to be dismantled and villages of this police station were attached with different the police stations as to Lalru, Zirakpur and Sohana.

The problem had caused harassment for people. During the hearing before commissioner today, most panchayats and municipal councillors had preferred to be attached with Patiala district and the Rajpura assembly constituency.

Local MLA, Hardyal Singh Kamboj, supported the demand of people for attaching with Rajpura assembly constituency and that the Banur police station should not be dismantled on any cost.

CPM Leader, Gurdarshan Singh Khaspur, supported the demand of people of attaching with Rajpura assembly constituency and Patiala district. Some panchayats that could not reach here, today, would be listened on December 3 regarding this issue.

Youth killed in road accident

A youth was killed in road accident near Lalru last night.

The deceased was identified as 20-year-old, Amandeep, a resident of Kesri district, Ambala.

Sources said the accident occurred when Amandeep was going on his bike after attending a marriage party at Lalru and suddenly a speedy car hit him from backside. After the accident, the victim was rushed to the Civil Hospital, Ambala, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The police has registered a case against car driver who fled from the spot. — OC

21-yr-old commits suicide

Panchkula, November 26
A 21-year-old MSC student today committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan at her residence in Sector-7, Panchkula. The victim was identified as Neha Singh. She was immediately rushed to the General Hospital, Sector-6 in Panchkula, where the doctors declared her brought dead.

The police said Neha had committed suicide because she was suffering from depression after she was diagnosed with tumour recently.

Neha Singh was the daughter of Rajbir Singh, junior engineer of Haryana Urban Development Authority.

“It was in the morning when the parents of the deceased had gone to meet a doctor to consult him regarding the tumour problem, the girl committed suicide. The younger brother of the deceased had gone to school and she was alone at home,” said a police official.

The police said no suicide note was recovered from the spot.

The postmortem of the deceased was conducted today and her body was handed over to the family members for cremation.

Medical student arrested in accident case

Chandigarh, November 26
A day after an employee of the Sector 33 filling station was injured when a youth rammed his car into him, the police today arrested a medical student, Abhimanyu, for the crime.

The police said the youth was with a girl in the car and accelerated his vehicle as her relatives were following them.

It said the youth tried to escape after he realised that he had been spotted by the girl’s relatives. In the process, he hit the petrol pump employee Pardeep Kumar.

The youth, who fled after the incident, was traced today on the basis of the registration number of the vehicle. The car involved in the accident, bearing Chandigarh registration number, was also impounded.

The police said Abhimanyu became nervous when some relatives of his friend (female), who was sitting along with him in the car, noticed them and he pressed the accelerator of the vehicle in an attempt to flee. The filling station employee, Pardeep, was standing on the right side of the car and was hit when the student took the turn.

Pardeep was taken to the GMCH-32 and was discharged after treatment.

The police said Abhimanyu had paid the fuel charges to another employee and was to leave the filling station when the mishap took place.

A case of rash and negligent driving was registered against Abhimanyu on the complaint of Amanpreet Singh, manager, Auto Mobile Petrol Pump, Sector-33-B.

After completing legal formalities, Abhimanyu was released on bail.

Man held with 6.85 kg charas

Mohali, November 26
The Mohali police today claimed to have recovered 6.85 kg of charas from a person during a routine checking at a naka near Balongi here.

The accused, identified as Gorakh Nath (57), resident of Barmajra Colony, Balongi, has been arrested by the police. He is said to be the president of the colony.

According to the police, the accused is a history-sheeter and has been involved in smuggling of narcotics for the past four-five years. — TNS
