Farmers a harried lot

Ambala, November 23
Farmers and arthiyas lamented that they had not received the payment for their produce for the past one month.

The district food and supplies department has to pay Rs 60 crore to farmers.

President of the Ambala Anjamandi Arthiyas Association Dooni Chand Danipur said the state government had announced that the procurement agencies would make the payment within 72 days, but the farmers were yet to receive the money.

He said the department had made the last payment on October 25 and since then the farmers have been awaiting their payment.

Dooni Chand said one of the officials of a procurement agency told him that they were expecting the arrival of 12 lakh metric tonnes of paddy this year, but the arrival had reached the 14-lakh mark which led to chaos.

He urged the government to do the needful.

Realty firm penalised Rs 5 lakh

A city-based private firm has been penalised for failing to grant possession of a plot to the complainant within the stipulated period. The UT Consumer Forum has directed Taneja Developers and Infrastructure Ltd to pay Rs 5 lakh as compensation to the complainant who had booked a plot in township called ‘TDI City’ at Mohali-Kharar Road.

The complainant was allotted a plot by the opposite party in September, 2008, and the total price payable by the complainant was Rs 22 lakh. It was stated that the project was launched in January, 2008, and the developed plot was to be handed over to the complainant by the opposite party within 16 months (up to May 2009).

The plot, in question, was to be handed over by the opposite party, in a developed manner, on or before May, 2009, but that did not happen.

“It was stated that the aforesaid acts of the opposite party, amounted to deficiency, in rendering service, as also indulgence into unfair trade practice. When the grievance of the complainant, was not redressed, left with no alternative, a complaint under Section 12 of the Consumer Protection Act, 1986 (hereinafter to be called as the Act only), was filed, for directing the opposite party to immediately issue the NOC to enable him to avail of the loan amount and subsequently, give possession of the plot,” reads the copy of the judgement.

The court directed the complainant to pay Rs 5 lakh as compensation towards mental agony and physical harassment and Rs 33,000 as cost of litigation.

Man falls from fifth floor of judicial academy

Chandigarh, November 23
A 26-year-old man died after he fell from the fifth floor of the judicial academy in Sector 43 this afternoon.The deceased was identified as Umesh Kumar, a resident of Panchkula. He worked for a contractor Rajesh Sood.

The police said Umesh was coming down from the fifth floor and while sitting in the temporary lift, he lost balance and fell down. Umesh sustained serious injuries on head and other parts of the body.

The victim was spotted lying unconscious in a pool of blood by one of the security guards. The police was informed and the victim was rushed to Government Medical Hospital and College in Sector 32 from where he was referred to PGI where he succumbed to his injuries. The body has been kept in the hospital mortuary and will be handed over to the family members after autopsy. The police has initiated inquest proceedings under Section 174 CrPC.

Man gets 1-yr term for fraud

Panchkula: The court today sentenced a man to a one-year imprisonment in a cheating case. A fine of Rs 10,000 was also imposed on the accused. The court convicted the accused, Lokesh Sharma, Deepak Malhotra, his wife Neelam Malhotra, his brother Kamal Kumar and Harjit Singh. The court in its verdict had acquitted the then deputy manager of SBI Bank, BK Sharma, due to lack of circumstantial evidence.

Chandigarh, November 23
The fourth round of Group A League of Ranji Trophy match between Punjab and Saurashtra will get under way at PCA Cricket Stadium, Mohali, tomorrow.

The Punjab team arrived from Bhubneshwar after their drawn tie against Railways, in which they secured the first innings lead. Saurashtra flew in from Hyderabad after securing 3 points from their first innings lead over Hyderabad.

Punjab is the leader in their group with 17 points, having beaten Hyderabad and Bengal by an innings and securing the first innings lead against Railways, taking the points tally to 17 in three matches, whereas Saurashtra has secured 6 points from two matches.

Both the teams did extensive net practice today. Punjab is keen to continue with their winning streak while Saurashtra want to replicate their last year’s performance when they had defeated the hosts at Mohali.

The four-day contest is going to be an absorbing affair between the two keen contesting teams. Punjab will be looking forward to a repeat performance from their pace trio of MS Gony, Siddharth Kaul and Sandeep Sharma and the right arm leg spinner Rahul Sharma. In batting they will be looking up to in-form batsmen Jiwanjot Singh and Uday Kaul. Saurashtra will bank heavily on its star all rounder Ravinder Jadeja and veteran batsman Sudhanshu Kotak and in bowling the medium pacers Siddharth Trivedi and left arm medium pacer Udakant.

Sunil Chaturvedi from Mumbai is the match referee while Mr Subrat Das and Srinath are the two on-field umpires.

Satluj academy script win in cricket

In the first league match of U-13 Satluj Winter Premier League Cricket Tournament at Satluj Public School in Sector 4, Panchkula, Satluj Stunners Cricket Academy (A Team) beat Little Flower Convent School, Sector 14, Panchkula, by a huge margin of 125 runs. Satluj won the toss and elected to bat first.

While batting first, Satluj scored 205/4 in allotted 25 overs. Captain Hardik Choudhary played a brilliant knock of 71 not out off 58 balls. Openers Shravan Sharma and Prabhjit Singh were involved in fruitful partnership of 78 runs, both scoring identical 38 runs for their team:
