Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, November 19
The hockey stadium of Sector 18 is in shambles with waste building material lying unattended on the ground for past 20 days.

The hockey stadium is already facing the crisis for fewer turnouts of players due to the lethargic approach of the officials as very less attention is being paid to the ground. "The engineering department is looking after the work and they might have cleared the waste material . The heaps of mud will be reused. The lower part of the stands was being re-fixed due to the regular leakage. Now the work is over, the situation will soon come back to normal ," said Naib Singh, senior manager, UT Sports Department.

When asked about the duration of delay in work, he said: "I don't know about the delay but I was told that the work got over few days back. I will ask the engineers to look into the matter and clear the material as soon as possible." An official said, "The work was over long time back and the respective department should react in a proper manner at an appropriate time. It provides a negative picture about the maintenance of the ground to the players. The ground is grassy and the waste material easily runs down with water that directly affects the field. It should be cleared as soon as possible."

Siblings squash their way to glory
Deepankar Sharda
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, November 19
The journey started with an aim to remain fit but soon these siblings started achieving laurels in the world of Squash. Both Jannia Singh and Inderjeet Singh (brother and sister) are achieving feats for making their city and family proud.

Jannia Singh, a 10-year-old player of girls’ (U-11) category had been recently awarded the 8th All-India Rank by the Squash Racket Federation India (SRFI) while her elder brother and Inderjeet Singh, a 12-year old, recently won the Chandigarh State championship for boys’ (U-13).

“We started to play the game for fitness but slowly it became our passion. We have not only achieved laurel but have been able to make our own identity and that too among a certain community of ‘Squash’ players,” said the duo.

Jannia stood second in the Coca Cola Indian Open Squash Tournament held in Delhi and secured 5th place in the Indian National Open Squash Tournament held in Chennai in August, earlier this year.

“Being a player is a great responsibility. You need to perform well not only for your identity but for your state, coach and parents. When I was placed at 8th rank, it was a proud moment but it also turned out to be a great responsibility. The game is played in closed circuit doors and needs power along with presence of mind,” said Jannia.

When asked about her daily routine, she said, “I undergo a regular practice session. I have many tournaments coming up and I hope to bag them in my kitty with all top honors,” said Jannia, who also won state champion for girls’ (U-11).

On other hand, her elder brother, Inderjeet, recently won the boys’ (U-11) state champion and the boys’ (U-13) edition of the competition. He proved his iron after standing 2nd in the handicap category of the Coca Cola All-Indian Open Squash Tournament held in Delhi.

“I am undergoing a proper practice session under the guidance of my coach Khushwant Singh. Although, Jannia is my younger sister but I always like to give her a tough competition, whenever we face each other in circuit court. I want to be an international squash player. And along with studies, I want to excel in the world of squash,” said Inder.

Meanwhile, proud father of both players, Amanpreet Singh, said: “Although they are in their early growing days but good enough to prove their iron. I am happy with their recent feats and want to them to shine their name in the world of Squash. They are getting an ample space and motivation from the family. Hope they continue to make me proud.”
