Thieves strike at 4 places in 24 hrs
 Decamp with cash, gold, valuables worth lakhs

Chandigarh, November 18
Thieves struck at four places in the city in the last 24 hours and decamped with cash, gold and other valuables worth lakhs. Thieves targeted residence of Bhutani student Kelzang Namgyel in Sector 15. Kelzang is studying at the Postgraduate Government College in Sector 11.

Kelzang Namgyel told the police that someone broke into his room and took away two laptops, marksheet, character certificate, school-leaving certificate, computer certificate, game certificates, migration certificate and admission card and two DMC.

In another incident, Surender Kumar Saini, resident of E-Block, Panjab University, reported that someone stole a bag containing laptop, car keys, passport, I-card and other documents from his residence. A case has been registered in the Sector 11 police station.

Vishav Maan Singh, resident of Sector 33, alleged that Sanjay Kumar, a resident of Sector 33, had stolen kitty set, gold bangle set, diamond ring, three gold rings and one gold chain. Acting on the complaint, a case has been registered.

Preet Pal Kaur, resident of Mani Majra, reported that someone broke into her house and stole one gold ring, one gold chain and Rs 31,000 from her residence. A case has been registered at the Mani Majra police station.

Assailants attack youth at his residence

Chandigarh, November 18
Three unidentified assailants attacked a youth at his residence in Sector 50 last night and snatched away his mobile phone. Thirty-year-old Vikram Dev Singh, a software professional, was attacked at around 3 am. The incident took place when the victim was alone at home.

Vikram reported the matter to the police that the miscreants entered his house from the rear side after breaking the door lock. He raised an alarm on seeing them, he was then attacked several times with a brick on his head.

The police said that the investigations revealed that the three youths had entered the house with the intention of theft and attacked Dev when he woke up and raised an alarm.

In his statement to the police, Vikram said he managed to nab one of them but the other accomplice attacked him with a brick on his head and he fell unconscious. When he gained consciousness after sometime, he found his phone missing and went to seek help from his neighbours, who then informed the police.

The house is situated on the third floor of a Co-operative Society in Sector 50 and thieves entered the house after breaking the backdoor of the balcony.

Dev, who runs his company in IT Park Mani Majra, was alone in the house when the incident took place. His wife and children had gone to their maternal house in Punjab.

The police has registered a case under Sections 458, 380, 34 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at the Sector 34 police station.

Another case of theft at wedding

Mohali, November 18
In yet another case of bag lifting from marriage occasions, a local family suffered a loss of about 2 lakh when a small boy from the spot after lifting the bag containing cash about Rs 50,000 and jewellery items from a marriage ceremony being held at Radhey Sham temple in Phase 2, here today.

The miscreant was chased by the family members but he managed to flee from the spot.

In the complaint to the police, Paramjit of Ram Darbar of Chandigarh alleged that his mother-in-law was sitting on a chair with her daughter when the boy in came and sat nearby. After sometime, he snatched the bag and ran and ran away from the site.

The police said they are investigating the matter.

DAREDEVILS DAY OUT IN DIRT AND DUST

CS Santosh, Category-A third round winner and winner of 2010, performs a stunt at Circus Ground in Chandigarh on Sunday. He lost his balance and fell on the ground.

Chandigarh, November 18
After the hectic competition, the super bikers underwent a stunt trail, at the Circus Ground, here today. The trail was conducted by the organisers of the MRF National Super Cross Championship that concluded on Saturday. A total of 90 bikers participated in the event.

SPS Garcha, member of the organising committee, said: “The event was a success and it turned out to be a treat for all the local residents. The next round will take place in Jaipur on November 25. The final round will be organised in Kochi on December 9.”

Col CK Nayudu cricket tourney
Punjab maintains lead on second day

Punjab team today put up a good show during the second day of the ongoing Col CK Nayudu Trophy at Bangalore. Punjab team posted 493 runs before getting bowled out in 142.1 overs.

Ravi Inder Singh added 10 runs to his individual overnight score of 142 runs before leaving the crease while his teammate Amit Parshar scored only 22 runs. Preetkamal Singh, Jaskaran Singh and Sharad Loomba scored 46, 41, 39 runs, respectively.

From Karnataka team, DK Mathias claimed 4 wickets while AB Sagar took 3 wickets.

In reply, Karnataka team made a disastrous start. The medium pacer of the Punjab team, Jaskaran Singh, took 3 wickets of the Karnataka team when their score was only 30 runs. He took 4 wickets for 29 runs. Mayank Aggarwal of the Karnataka team scored an unbeaten 65 runs.

Pankaj Sidana of Manav Mangal High School, sector 21, won the sub-junior boys' (singles) title by defeating Shaurya Gupta of St Annes School, Sector 32, in a one-sided match during the ongoing 25th Chandigarh State Table Tennis Championship for Gurukul Global Trophy at Table Tennis Hall, Sector 23, here today.

Pareen Verma of DAV Public School,Sector 8, defeated Inayat of Sacred Heart, sector 26, by 4-1 to win the final match of the sub-junior girls' singles U-15 category.

Boys' ( sub-junior ) singles (U-15): Semifinal's result- Pankaj Sidana (Manav Mangal) beat Divaksh (DAV Public School) (4-0) 11-8, 11-9, 11-3, 11-4; Shaurya Gupta (St.Annes) beat Sohrab Grewal (4-0) 11-9, 12-10, 11-7, 11-7;

Chandigarh, November 18
The CLTA trainee, Charvi Saxena, defeated Nisha Singh by 9-6 to qualify for the main round of the ongoing CLTA-AITA Chandigarh Open Men and Women Tennis Tournament being held at the CLTA Court, today.

In men’s group, Vikrant Dahiya defeated Yuvraj Chaudhari by 9-7 while in another closely contested match Harinder Singh Bedi of Delhi thrashed Shrey Gupta of Haryana by 9-8.

Earlier, in the second round, Yuvraj Singh beat Maninder Singh by 8-5 while Paramveer Bajwa beat Jayesh Solanki by 8-1.

Katoch Shield Trophy a four-day event from 2013: PCA

Mohali, November 18
The meeting of executive members of Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) was held today at Dhruv Pandove conference hall at the PCA stadium in Mohali.

MP Pandove, secretary, during the meeting discussed the improved performance of the Punjab Ranji Team, which won the first two matches of the innings. He attributed the performance of the team to the hard work of the players and proper training imparted to them during the off-season camps held by the association.

He also reviewed the working of the State Cricket Academy and Non-Residential Academy for boys (U-14).

The executive committee authorised the president and the secretary to form various committees for the upcoming England-India ODI Matches to be held in January.

It was approved during the meeting that the Katoch Shield Trophy, in the coming years, would be played as a four-day tournament on the pattern of Ranji Trophy. It was also decided that June 2013 will be left for the District Cricket Association to plan district championships.

Mohali, November 18
The 14th edition of Sardar Sukhdev Singh Gill Memorial Sports festival concluded at Dushera Ground Phase VIII, here today.

The concluding day of the competition witnessed players and skill exhibitors, from various parts of Punjab, participating in the event and showcasing their talent. These exhibitors mark their presence in effort to make money. "Karanil Singh who had lost his legs in early age also performed stunts just to make quick bucks," said Phoolraj Singh, organiser of the event. He said,"We don't specially invite them but after learning about these kinds of rural games, they just mark their presence. We felicitate them with a certificate but the spectators, present in the stadium, shower money on them according to their own will."

The Kabaddi team of Miri Piri Kabaddi Academy, Kapurthala, bagged the first prize of Rs 1 lakh while the Dashmesh Kabaddi Club Kalakh , Ludhiana, bagged the cash reward of Rs 71,000 for securing second place in the competition.
