Three die in train accident
Dera Bassi, November 17 The Bathinda to kalka bound train crushed the victims to death at around 5 am today. The railway police officials ruled out any possibility of suicide. The victims were crushed to death when they were trying to cross the railway track. The victims are 22 to 25 year old. |

Punjabi University to study impact of MGNREGA
Patiala, November 17 The University Grants Commission (UGC) has allocated 82 major research projects during 2011-2012 and the third highest allocation have been granted for this project, amounting to Rs 9,08,600. Dr Gian Singh is the principal Investigator and Dr Balwinder Singh Tiwana and Dr Sarbjeet Singh are co-investigators for the project. Keeping in view the socio-economic conditions of the weaker sections, the results of the project will be helpful for the government, planners and policy makers in successful implementation of the MGNREGA. |
CBI court extends judicial remand of Deshraj
Chandigarh, November 17 SP (City) Desraj Singh was arrested on October 18 after he was caught red-handed by the CBI while accepting a bribe of Rs 1 lakh from a police inspector for giving him a clean chit in two departmental inquiries against him. The court had earlier, dismissed the bail application of Desraj amidst strong opposition by the investigating agency. |

Multi-crore bank fraud: Two more arrested
Chandigarh, November 17 Two of the arrested were identified as Rajmani of Mohali and Prem Kumar of Sector 15, Chandigarh. Both have been remanded in three days police custody. DSP Anil Joshi said Rajmani and Prem were arrested following the disclosure of prime accused bank manager Kalsi. Police sources said the accused Rajmani and Prem used to sign fake documents posing themselves as loan seekers and in some of the documents, both were also shown owners of fictitious properties, against which housing loans were obtained. The police summoned four clerical employees of the Punjab and Sindh Bank, Sector 24, and recorded their statements. The police said four cars were found registered in the names of kin of Kalsi. His four bank accounts have also been seized. The police has also seized around 133 housing loan case files, which were reportedly sanctioned during one-year-old tenure of the accused Kalsi in the bank. All loan files were found to be based on fake documents. The total amount of the fraud is over Rs 20 crores. Yesterday, the police had arrested a former manager of Punjab and Sindh Bank, Sector 24, Rajinder Singh Kalsi, along with two other persons and unearthed a racket of sanctioning housing loans under fictitious names and duping the bank. The accused had sanctioned as many as 133 housing loans amounting to over Rs 20 crores on the names of fictitious persons, said the police. |

One arrested for cheating bank
Chandigarh, November 17 Accused Jaiswal, a resident of Sector 10 in Panchkula, was remanded in the police custody for three days. Jaiswal was booked following the complaint of AK Patnayak, Assistant General Manager (AGM) of PNB, Sector 22, who found that Jaiswal had obtained loan on fake documents. The police said the loan was sanctioned to Jaiswal in February, 2012 and he had failed to pay some of the installments. A case was registered at the police station Sector 17. |

Santosh, Veer take lead in MRF Super Cross Championship
Chandigarh, November 17 The third round event of the MRF National Super Cross Championship, witnessed bikers from all over the nation participating, to win the top honour and showing their capacity, to control their 250 CC racing beast. Although, the day ended with a few winners, who basked glory but the real thing that hogged the limelight was the capability and courage of the participant bikers. “The event is all about holding one’s nerves and handling the bike. The moment a biker goes into a pit, he make sure that he overcomes strongly, otherwise, he will be rewarded with an injury all the time. Biking is like a passion and one needs to give his cent per cent for it,” said CD Janan. Champion of 2010 year CS Santosh feels that biking is the greatest thing that has happened to him. “I was sure of bagging the lead. The track was good but the bike racing is all about facing bumps, sharp curves and flights. Its not an easy task head, one needs a lot struggle, learning to overcame the hurdles in a track” said Santosh. His teammate added, “Facing a competition is another aspect of this event but the main concentration always remain how to handle the machine and save yourself from injuries. The best thing is speed always thrills but it should be under control, to avoid any untoward incident. Today’s track was good but it was as dangerous as like other. We face challenge in every race and it’s not easy to maintain the record,” said Adnan Ahmed. On other hand, American biker and stuntman Brad Ripple feels that biking is the most dangerous motor sport but he opted for it after growing up watching bikes and listening their ‘roar’. “I have started this bike racing and stunting, during my school days and being inexperienced; I have faced a lot of criticism and injuries also. The courage has grown gradually and moreover, after facing fractures, injuries and criticism, people started recognising as a biker. This event has given me a lot respect,” said Ripple. The competition was strong and both bikers secured similar points but the winner of 2010 CS Santosh and biker Veer Patel secured same points to top the table with 37 points each, today. CD Janan is trailing with 30 points. Moving ahead, the bikers will now compete in the fourth round that will be held in Jaipur on November 25 while the final round will take place in Kochi on December 9. Pair of Vibhuti, Vasundhra bags gold medal in TT meet
Chandigarh, November 17 In the event, Vasundhara defeated Deevanshi by 3-1 (11-3, 9-11, 11-8, 11-5) while Vibhuti overcame Aparna by 3-0 (11-7, 12-10, 12-10). In the team event, the wining pair defeated Aparna and Deevanshi by 3-0 (11-6, 11-5,11-3). On other hand, Shubhangi of Delhi Public School, Sector 40, won the finals of Cadet Girls Singles after defeating Aparna by 3-2.
