One killed in road mishap

One person was killed and another was injured near ITI Chowk, Lalru, when a car hit a motorcycle here today.

The deceased was identified as Moorti Ram, a resident of Sehra village in Patiala district. The injured, Jaimal Singh, a resident of Sambhu village, was rushed to the Commando Hospital, Chandimandir. The accident occurred when a car, coming from Chandigarh side, hit the motorcycle. The car driver fled from the spot. The police, however, has managed to trace the car number and registered a case against the car driver under Sections 279, 337 and 304A of the IPC. — OC

Intoxicants seized from chemist shop

A team of drug inspectors along with the local SMO raided on a chemist shop in Lalru Mandi. The team seized large quantity of intoxicants recently.

SMO Dr Diler Singh Multani conducted surprise checks at clinics and medical shops to trace unregistered practitioners. He found intoxicants, which were being sold at Raajan Medicos, situated near the Telephone Exchange.

He informed Civil Surgeon Dr Rajiv Bhalla who immediately sent a team of drug inspectors, including Dr Sanjiv Garg, Neha Sui and Amit Kumar, on the spot.

They recovered over 3,500 tablets and 700 capsules of banned drugs.

LAND ACQUISITION
High-powered panel tobe set up

More than 17 years after the land in Lambian village of Mohali district was acquired for the development of Sector 69, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has directed the constitution of a high-powered committee, headed by a judicial officer, for looking into issues arising out of the acquisition process.

Secretary-cum-Legal Re- membrancer to the Punjab government would be the committee chairman. The members will include GMADA Chief Administrator and Mohali Additional Deputy Commissioner.

The committee will decide whether the owners of the acquired land or the oustees are entitled to one plot, residential or commercial, or both under the Special Rehabilitation Policy framed for Lambian village.

The committee will also see: “Whether the choice to select residential or commercial property, if the owner is found entitled to allotment of one property only, should vest in the owner or in the authority."

Another issue before the committee was: “Whether the tenants or unauthorised occupants, who had built houses on the land before its acquisition, were entitled to any benefit under the policies?"

The Division Bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice RP Nagrath framed nine questions for the committee to decide. “We shall appreciate if the committee decides the issues expeditiously within four months from the date of receipt of the certified copy of the order,” the Bench added.

The directions came on a bunch of 29 petitions. In one of the petitions, Nasib Singh had claimed that he was the “owner of eight marlas within in the revenue estate of Lambian village”.

Nasib Singh had constructed shops on the land. But, the structure was acquired by the Punjab government for development of Urban Estate, SAS Nagar, Mohali.

Admitting the acquisition of land, GMADA said a residential plot had been allotted to the petitioner.

Courier company directed to pay Rs 20,000

The UT Consumer Redressal Forum has directed the DTDC Courier Services Company to pay Rs 20,000.

The forum has also directed the company to pay Rs 7,000 as the cost of litigation.

Pathfinder Edutech Pvt Ltd, a Sector 35-based institute, sent an urgent international consignment of documents from Chandigarh to Canada through Courier of DTDC on December 19, 2011.

At the time of sending the said documents, the complainant made a special request for its urgent delivery as it contained important immigration documents of three Indian applicants that needed to be certified by a leading Canadian Law Firm and thereafter were to be forwarded to the Canadian High Commission.

The complainant got the status on January 2, this year, from DTDC's website that the consignment had been delivered to the consignee on December 28, 2011. However, when the client of the complainant, whose documents were sent through courier, tried to contact the opposite party to know as to when and where the documents had been delivered, the latter failed to give any satisfactory reply.

On much persuasion, the DTDC officials finally admitted that the courier was never delivered by them and it remained lying in their office only.

Jewellery, cash stolen from wedding venue

The incidents of theft at wedding venues are on the rise.

In a similar incident, a bag containing Rs 30,000 in cash, ornaments and valuables was reportedly stolen from a wedding venue in Sector 33.

The police said Saranjit Kaur, a resident of Pennar Road, Jamshedpur, reported that someone had stolen her bag containing a gold necklace, a gold chain, earring, a ring, a camera, an ATM card, two Samsung mobile phones and Rs 30,000 in cash from Gulati Bhawan, Sector 33, on November 9.

Diwan Singh, SHO, Sector 34 police station, said they saw the video-recording of the function and were looking for the accused.

"The involvement of juveniles cannot be ruled out," the SHO said.

The police has also asked the complainant to provide a copy of photographs clicked during the function.

On October 27, a 10-year-old boy allegedly stole a bag containing shagun envelopes during a wedding ceremony at Hotel Park Plaza in Sector 17 that reportedly contained Rs 11 lakh.

The issue was discussed during a meeting held at the Police Headquarters today.

RS Ghuman, SSP (Operations), who is also officiating as the SSP, Chandigarh, stated that the police should keep a check on children who might commit a theft during a function.

Lawyer duped of Rs 20 lakh

A man duped a lawyer of Rs 20 lakh on the pretext of sending him abroad.

It was after the victim, Anil Kumar, went to the residence of the accused at Mansa Devi Complex, Sector 4, that he learnt that the family had fled.

Anil is a resident of Sector 14 in Panchkula. The accused, Sunil Kumar and his wife Jyoti, were Anil's friends.

Sunil and Jyoti are into an immigration business.

The duo demanded Rs 20 lakh for sending Anil to Australia.

Anil said he had paid the amount in two instalments.

When the accused dis not send him abroad, the victim asked them to return his money, following which they gave him two cheques that bounced.

“I made repeated calls to my friend, but could not get through to him,"said Anil.

A case has been registered against the accused.

Woman robbed of gold jewellery

Two youths posing as policemen robbed a 58-year-old woman in Sector 70 market here today.

The victim, Simarjit Kaur, a resident of Sector 68, has been robbed of two gold bangles and a chain.

The duo, posing as policemen, told her she shouldn’t be roaming in the market with wearing so many gold jewelleries.

“What would you do if someone snatch them? You should put them in your purse or pocket,” the youths told the victim and insisted her to remove the jewellery at once.

When she took off her jewellery, they took it away.

A case under Sections 420 and 379 of the IPC has been registered at Mataur police station.

850 bottles of liquor seized in Panchkula

Panchkula, November 10
A team of Panchkula police in two separate incidents today seized about 850 bottles of liquor.

As many as 600 liqour bottles were seized near Sector 27/28 lights from a Scorpio car. Another 250 bottles were seized near Sector 6/7 lights from a Wagon R car. The drivers of the cars fled the spot.

The cost of 850 bottles is around Rs 3 lakh while other is around Rs 1 lakh.

The Panchkula police security wing official, Malkit Singh, constable Amrik, Maninder and other officials seized the liquor bottles.

“After receiving a tip off, nakas were laid and the bottles were seized,” said a police official.

The owners of the same are suspected to be from a Chandigarh-based political party.

Man arrested for killing wife

Mohali, November 10
Rahul Saini (36) confessed that he had killed his wife on October 18.

“Our regular scuffles forced me to kill her,” said Rahul.

Rahul, who had strangulated his wife Harpreet Kaur Seema Saini on October 28 at their rented accommodation in Phase X, was arrested yesterday from the house of his maternal uncle at Jamshedpur. He was produced in the local court today and was sent to two-day police remand.

During the interrogation, Rahul said to have confessed that he had murdered his wife with the ‘duppatta’she had wrapped around her head while sleeping.

“We had a fight in evening on the fateful day. She didn’t want to stay with my parents. In a fit of rage, I strangulated her around 12.30 am,” said Rahul.

After murdering his wife, Rahul took his five-year-old son Karanveer to his parents’ house at Ludhiana on his scooter. He sold his scooter there for Rs 17,500 and fled from Ludhiana.

SP (City) Swarndeep Singh said from Ludhiana Rahul went to Delhi, then to Surat (Gujarat), then Mumbai, where he lived in a hotel near Haji Ali.

“From there he went to Jamshedpur, where his ‘massi’ (aunt) lives. Our party, which was already there, nabbed him immediately,” said SP Swarndeep Singh.
