Cinema scope
Conduct a quiz on film-making; those contesting would most likely know the job profile of a director and producer. Some would know what music directors, choreographers and playback singers do. However, very few would know about a section of unsung heroes and Karm Chawla, a cinematographer from Bollywood, has made peace with the fact and so has, as he says, sound producers, casting directors and other technicians. "That's how Bollywood has always been. If we don't get enough credit for our work, we don't even get brickbats when a movie flops," says Karm, who was at Dikshant International School, Panchkula, to conduct a film-making workshop.
So, it doesn't surprise him at all when people enquire about what he exactly does. "It's a question I am used to. Instead of dodging it, I happily answer it to ensure that at least some would know what a cinematographer does in a film." His job is to assist the director by creating appropriate ambience for a particular shot. "A shot is not just about a couple of actors, their dialogues and costumes. We go into details such as how much of light is required, what would make for a perfect backdrop and even the pressure of air that would bring the desired effect." He says that a cinematographer has to help the director shoot a scene as he or she has planned. Of the films he has worked for — Luv Shuv Te Chicken Khurana, Jannat 2 and The Dirty Picture — he found Jannat 2 the most challenging. "It was difficult to shoot at Nizamuddin in Delhi and we had a couple of shots there." It's here that the real task of a cinematographer begins, "Crowd management is not an easy job, but we need people around to bring in the real effect." Ironically, Karm didn't screen any of the films that he has worked for at the workshop because he feels children can do it on their own. "Bollywood is accessible to all and to a larger extent, even Hollywood is. I preferred world cinema instead and focused on films that can teach students the art of film-making." His list included a Japanese film, Kuku Jaro, and Children of Heaven, an Iranian film. Comparing Indian cinema to world cinema, Karm says even if Indian films don't boast of substance, they are better received around the world. "We are commercially viable and that's enough to prove how we excel over cinema of other countries." Karm, however, rues the fact that there aren't many film schools in India. He adds that there should be more than just a Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, and Satyajit Ray Film and televsion Institute( SRFTI), Kolkata. "When the film industry is growing and crossing borders to make its presence felt at the international festivals, it's time we had schools that teach technical aspects of film-making." Or else, he says, those interested will have to find their own way, just the way he did. No wonder then, he has over 30 documentaries and several short films to his credit! "If there aren't enough resources, then what matters is passion." If one has it, formal education is reduced to a mere formality! ashima@tribunemail.com

Sweet nothings
With Diwali knocking at our doors, the rush to buy gifts for our loved ones has already begun. And amidst the hunt for that perfect Diwali gift, a dash of sweetness always adds to the festive flavour. So, cheers to chocolates that have found meaning in flavours other than sweet.
"Chocolates have become quite a hot favourite gift this Diwali. And it's the varied flavours in chocolates, cakes and cookies that attract people," says Nikhil Mittal, owner, Nik Bakers. With flavours that can leave you wanting for more, Nikhil adds, "We have endless flavours of chocolates, right from caramel to orange, rock chocolates to Belgium, but people these days like to indulge in something different. So, innovation is the key to success. Keeping this in mind, we have the Baklava rolls, English cookies, and a lot of egg-less cakes to offer." While the trend of eating chocolates has changed over the years, Priya Garg, director, Ovenfresh, says, "Right from Belgium to Swiss chocolates we have crunchy, rice and flake chocolates to offer. Other than this, we have a variety in white, milk and dark chocolates. And not to miss is our liquor chocolates, but this we are making only on order." Introducing pies as Diwali gifts she adds, "We have included pies this season and apart from the regular apple pie, we have walnut, peach, peanut and caramel ones. Even packaging has been customised this year, with logos to suit individual tastes." Well, Tom Hanks was right in Forrest Gump when he said that you never know what you're going to get when you open a box of chocolates! "No doubt, chocolates are a pleasure to eat, but when they come in a pretty box they add to the delight," says Monica Sood from Monica's. She adds, "We have a variety in chocolates to offer, but cakes are our USP; right from plum cakes to brownies we also have velvet cup cakes and brownies." Having become a piece of art, chocolates are being presented in almost all flavours and designs. "Right from crunchy to fruits and nuts, to white and dark, there are endless flavours in chocolates, but what makes the difference is the packaging. So, this festive season a lot of importance is being given to it," says Rameet Bakshi from Crown chocolates. Go ahead and say cheers to chocolates this Diwali!

Get ready to do some backcombing, puffing and add some drama to your hairstyle with hair accessories, as it's all about some chic styling in hair designs this festive season.
"Buns are back with a bang and so are hair accessories," says Azzem Khan from Stylo in Sector 19. He adds, "Since this is the festive season, women want hairstyles that are easy to maintain; so soft perms, puffing, spirals and curls are a lot in vogue. Other than this, hair accessories like flowers, frills and clips are quite a rage." Talk of colour and its mahogany, blonde, chocolate and mocha. Though styles this year celebrate the retro era, if you decide to stick to medium-length hairstyles, make sure you add some definition and volume to your strands. "Hairdos depend on facial structures and hair colours are entirely subjective. Plaits are quite in and so are curls. Fringes too are in, but it's the square fringe with some volume that is working well. And nothing is straight this season; so hairstyles go from plain-Jane to a glamorous girl," says Mohammad Aasif hair-stylist from Tress Lounge. He adds, "Accessories too are in, but it's the hair extensions that are quite popular. Colouring is in demand, but for the festive season it's the blend of two-to-three colours that is working well." So, get the combs, grab some clips and make a hair statement!

Love to be natural?
For a while now, it has only been back to the roots. And it’s not only about yoga and some traditional fashion, but also natural beauty products. As the international buzz gets louder and ayurvedic products get their due, the cosmetics sector sees a large number of buyers, especially for the ‘natural products’. After all who minds a natural glow!
“People are turning to all things natural, just because they believe there are no side-effects and these products are totally herbal. Other than that, companies that are promoting natural products are now packaging them in such a way that it appeals to the consumer,” says Anju Khanna from Styl studio, a beauty salon in Panchkula. She adds, “Earlier, ayurveda meant some herbs and potions in plastic bottles with homemade labels; they weren’t usually something to showcase, but with companies like Khadi, The Body Shop, Forest Essentials and Himalaya the concept of natural products has gone to a higher level.” Organic is taking the lead everywhere, so why not in beauty products? “People are thinking eco-friendly and these days it is all about going back to the roots,” says an employee from Fabindia, Chandigarh. “So ‘Made in India’ and nature-inspired beauty products are a natural choice,” she adds. Then be it soaps, shampoos, body lotions, kajal or face packs, the beauty segment of natural products is definitely growing. And with a brand like The Body Shop in Chandigarh, we are sure the takers for natural products are many. “The consumer has knowledge of natural herbs these days. All they want is a product that suits their skin and keeps it healthy as well as glowing,” says an employee of The Body Shop in Sector 17. Betty Nangia, holistic and skin care specialist from Betty’s organic skin care clinic in Sector 8, spells out the difference between natural and other beauty products, “It’s just like having fresh juice and juice from a tetra pack. Organic products add life to your skin and make the skin breathe. Although other beauty products yield instant results, they make your skin dependent on them; the moment you stop using these products the skin suffers from all kind of problems, unlike the natural products, which act slowly, but for a
lifetime.” No wonder then, natural products are a hit globally!

Green thumb Satish Narula Today let us discuss various gardening operations to be carried out in the ensuing fortnight. This is the most important time and the following operations should be carried out if you want to enjoy the best of your garden. The time to transplant winter annual seedlings is approaching fast. Some of the gardeners have already done that. The seedlings are very tender and life of the plant is also very short. It is therefore important to keep the bed clear of weeds as they eat into the resources and weaken the seedlings, thus lowering the quality of blooms. At the time of preparing the soil, make sure the manure you add is well rotten as otherwise your bed will be full of weeds and also white ants. Correct watering in winter annuals is very important. It depends upon the weather conditions, soil type and above all, the nature and type of plant in question. In case of some species like burf, the watering requirement is minimum. It is better to do frequent irrigations rather than too deep irrigation with prolonged gaps. In case fertilizers like urea etc are added later, its application should immediately be followed by copious watering. When the winter is at its zenith, the watering requirement reduces but in case of danger of frost, the application of irrigation helps ward off its damage. When it comes to selection of winter annuals for different locations in the home garden, one should be cautious and particular. The winter flowering annuals are called short day plants and need sun for maximum number of hours in a day. However, there are some dark corners in the home gardens where sun reaches only for a few hours or not at all. In such areas, you can grow salvia, cineraria, nasturtium, nemesia and to some extent petunia. In case you have a terrace and are growing plants in pots, you can keep these on rooftop to get maximum sun. The vegetable seeds are advised to be put in soil in stages as staggered planting so that you get the vegetables in small quantity over a longer period of time. Those who are about to plant now radish, turnip, carrot etc in their home garden, must keep the distance between rows at 45 centimeter and that between plants 7.5 centimeter and those who have recently planted and the seeds have sprouted, must thin out the excessive plants to maintain proper distance in rows. This will ensure quality produce. The winter is approaching fast and one can feel the nip in the air. This is the time when the deciduous fruit plants like peach, plum, pear, grapes, mulberry etc start shedding leaves to go dormant. This is a natural process, which facilitate plants to escape the adverse effects of adverse weather conditions. The gardeners should stop watering these plants so that the transition to dormant stage is smooth. (Narula is a senior PAU horticulturist) |

Cute is hot!
Trends come and go, fashion changes but being stylish is a constant factor. A stylish person draws a second glance and isn’t that what we all are looking for? The power to attract lies in the ability to carry oneself suitably. Let’s see what young B.Com student Preetika Goyal has to say— Your sense of style? For me, style means to be in sync with what is latest and dressing appropriately according to the occasion. I would rather go for the ‘cute’ look rather than the ‘hot’. One latest addition to your treasure of clothing or accessories… My purple jacket from Levis. Brand crazy or street pick-up? Brands preferably, but sometimes street pick-ups. Your style icon would be… Sarah Parker and if I can add I like my mom’s way of dressing too. Who do you think is the worst-dressed celebrity? Each to his own. But I think Rakhi Sawant would fit the bill! Which look would you prefer—sporty, chic or glamourous? Glamorous it would be. One fashion trend that goes beyond your comprehension… Hot colours in pants! Your take on accessories? Bangles and hair accessories are favourite accessories? Given a choice which designer you would like to be dressed by? Surely Manish Malhotra! What gives you a high on the confidence level? First of all I have to like myself and then of course compliments always give a high! —As told to Poonam Bindra |

switch on and switch off mode. Hats off to those who can do that, I can't for sure. "The film took such a toll on me that I carried the spirit with me to the dinner table as well. There were animalistic traits in me and I started speaking in a heavy bass voice at home as well," Tia said. Her family wasn't amused and after a while and when Tia's behaviour started freaking them out, they had a stern word with her that it was about time she drew a line between real and reel life. "After a while they didn't find it funny at all. My mom used to worry about what was wrong with me. When my brother said something, I started giving those weird looks to him, just like my character would in the film," said Tia, who had gone through a similar routine during her debut film Haunted — PTI

chatter box Actor Karan Mehra of Amrit Manthan fame shares his eating habits and fitness mantra. Keeping it sporty I enjoy working out and playing sports. I go to the gym about four to five times a week and play football twice a week. This also largely depends a lot on my shooting schedule. I workout for at least two hours. Food wise I eat everything served hot and with love. I prefer eating home cooked food and eat whatever that is made at home. The only thing I dislike eating is raw tomatoes. All in the mind Eat whatever you want, but burn it hard and try to finish dinner by 7 pm. Feel healthy and stay positive.

It was wonderful. He is a humble person and throws no tantrums. He would chat and joke with everyone. His stamina to work non-stop is commendable. Did you also get to interact with Kareena Kapoor and Rani Mukerji? I shot some portions with Kareena and she was very sweet. She is extremely talented and totally foucssed about her work. I had earlier done a Philips ad with her too, so she knows me from those days.

The year ahead
If your birthday is November 6...
Remember that interpersonal walls are created by mutual consent, so open your heart to invite in those with whom you want to share your life. The number six is a loving, stable and harmonious vibration. Ruled by Venus, you will be compassionate, stable, family-loving and trustworthy; if expressed negatively, superficial, jealous, possessive and unwilling to change. As lovers, Number Six have a deep dislike of discord and will generally work hard at keeping the peace. Don't try to discourage if you get the impression a partner or someone in the family wants to be more independent. Your negative reaction will only increase their feelings of restriction and restlessness. How do you handle this situation? It's a toss between compromise and complications. Giving others the space they need will show that you respect their feelings. It may also help you both realise how important you are to each other. You'll need it, as responsibilities at home, career concerns and personal relationships cry out for attention as you become more concerned with your hopes and happiness. The social side of romance may be on your agenda, so expect an increase in communications and activities with friends. Joining organisations and group activities will be rewarding. You may not want to talk about your emotions, but your need to be alone doesn't include your very best friends or lover, since you long for the deep emotional connections that can break through your current isolation. This is a very powerful time for pushing your romantic agenda forward. The key to success is in understanding your desires and being able to express them without making others feel uncomfortable or guilty. An alluring invitation to enter into your world of pleasure just might be irresistible to the right playmate. Get input from multiple sources at the outset of 2013. You're particularly open to different points of view now - an excellent state of mind for progressive synthesis, but be attuned to your automatic, preconditioned reaction to change starting from January. Avenues of needless spending are likely to crop up. Hence you should make efforts to rein in your expenditure. The year is favourable for enjoying good health most of the time. Mood: Anxious to shine. Compatible signs: Capricorn, Gemini. Lucky colours: Dark Orchid, Brown. Lucky days: Friday and Sunday.
