: Ludhiana College of Engineering and Technology organised an Alumni Meet-2012 at the institute's premises here on Monday. Many alumni shared their success stories.

Two drown in Swan river
: Two cousins in their late thirties were drowned in the Swan river near Nangal on Sunday. The incident came to light when the body of one of the victims was found floating in the river by passersby on Monday morning. Sources said the victims, Surjit Singh alias Rinku and Kulwinder Singh alias Kindi, both residents of Sanauli village in Una district, were going towards Bhalari village on a tractor which might have fell into the river. 

Undertrial tries to flee from court: An undertrial made an unsuccessful bid to escape from the custody of the local police here on Monday. Ropar city police station SHO Manvir Singh said the accused, Sunil Kumar, who was facing trial in a theft case, was brought from the local jail for an appearance in court. He allegedly pushed the accompanying police personnel and fled the spot. Sunil was nabbed by the police with the help of the public before he could move out of the court complex. A case has been registered.

Youth killed as tempo catches fire
: A 20-year-old youth from Uttar Pradesh, Rohit Kumar, was burnt to death when the tempo he was travelling in caught fire near Moonak on Monday. The tempo, loaded with hosiery goods, was on its way to Delhi. Chowki incharge of Chottian village Sherwinder Singh said the mishap occurred when tempo driver Satish Kumar was trying to overtake a vehicle. The tempo touched an electricity wire due to which it caught fire. Satish managed to alight from the tempo. 

Ex-MLA meets DC, submits memo: A deputation of local residents led by former Congress MLA from Sangrur Surinder Pal Singh Sibia on Monday met Deputy Commissioner Kumar Rahul and apprised him of the problems being faced by the residents. The residents submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner alleging that the local municipal council was not executing development works in the wards that were represented by Congress councillors. On the contrary, several new development projects had been initiated in the wards that were represented by the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal councillors, they alleged.

Man’s body found in field
: The police has recovered the body of a middle-aged man lying in fields of Saray Aaurangabad village under Bahadurgarh subdivision in the district on Monday. The police said the body, which was yet to be identified, had been sent to Bahadurgarh Civil Hospital for post-mortem examination.

Husband booked in dowry case
: A young woman, identified as Manju Yadav, was found dead at Khandora village, 15 km from here, on Sunday. On the complaint of victim’s father Tej Ram Yadav, a resident of Kotkasim town of Alwar district in Rajasthan, the Bawal police has registered a case of dowry death against her husband Ajay Yadav, father-in-law Laxmi Chand and mother-in-law Rewati Devi, all residents of Khandora village. Manju is survived by a year-old daughter.

Dengue patients:
In view of a rise in the number of dengue cases in Haridwar, Roorkee and Luxar, at least three patients suffering from the disease have been referred to Doon Hospital. “As Doon Hospital is better equipped to handle the rush of patients, the doctors there are not facing any difficulty in treating patients,” said Dr KC Pant, senior physician at Doon Hospital. However, so far no dengue patient from Dehradun is undergoing treatment at the hospital.
