Eight booked for duping farmer of Rs 1 crore

A farmer of Shingariwala village in Mohali district was duped of Rs 1 crore by eight persons, who assured him of providing land at cheaper rate in Bhamarsi village.

SSP Hardial Singh Mann said that Dharmender Singh, the victim, in his complaint to the police said he sold his land in village and was in search of a large piece of land so that he could start farming.

Mann said after preliminary inquiry, eight persons have been booked who were identified as Harjindger Singh, a resident of Dhulwa village in Mohali, Gurvinder Singh and Harinder Singh, both residents of Bhajorian village in Mohali, Balwinder Singh, a resident of Jyanti Majra, Devinder Singh, a resident of Rurka village, Ram Singh, a resident of Dhanas village in Chandigarh, Bhupinder Singh, a resident of Salempur Jattan in Patiala and Sarvjit Singh Lakhnour.

The SSP said Dharmender while searching for the land came in contact with Ram Singh, Harjinder Singh and Balwinder Singh on April 8, who told him that they would arrange a meeting with Sarvjit Singh who own an undisputed large chunk of land. The accused told him that the land measures 77 kanals and 10 marla and was priced at Rs 57 lakh per acre.

Later, the accused arranged a meeting of Dharmender with one of their accomplice, Devinder Singh, and told his that the latter was the landowner. The cost of land was fixed at Rs 63 lakh and Dharmender Singh booked the land by paying Rs 1 lakh and later paid Rs 50 lakh as earnest money on April 21. Later, he paid another installment of Rs 50 lakh on May 11.

However, Dharmender got suspicious and during an inquiry he came to know from the local people that the land was disputed one. When he demanded his money back the accused assured him to pay the whole amount along with interest. However, the accused later started issuing threats to him stating that they have connection with influential persons and refused to return the amount.

The SSP said inquiry was entrusted to DSP Hardevender Singh who had found that accused had cheated Dharmender Singh. He said during an investigation the police also came to know that the accused had also cheated various persons in such land deals.

A case has been registered in Sarhind police station under Sections 406, 420, 465, 468, 471 and 120B of the IPC. The police has launched a campaign to nab the accused.

Families of martyrs honoured

The district police organised a function to commemorate the supreme sacrifice of police martyrs at police line, Mahadian, today. Sixteen families of police martyrs were honoured. SSP HS Mann presided over the function.

Addressing the function, SSP said it is only Punjab Police which had succeeded in curbing terrorism. He said police has great pride on 693 Punjab policemen, who have sacrificed their lives for the cause of the nation.

He said it becomes our moral duty to extend all possible help to such families, who have lost their dear ones for our safety. He said the district police and administration have issued strict instructions to all the staff and officials that the problems of these families must be sorted out on priority basis. He said medical, educational and other facilities are being provided to these families from time to time.

Two die in road accidents

Mohali, October 21
Two youth died in two accidents near Kharar during late hours last night.

In the first incident, Gurwinder Singh (22), a resident of Fatehgarh Sahib, died on the spot when he was hit by an unidentified vehicle near Gharuan village last night. Gurwinder was riding his bike at the time of incident. The driver along with the vehicle fled from the scene after the accident. The police has registered a case in this connection at Kharar police station (Sadar). In the second incident, Satinder Singh of Kajauli village succumbed to his injuries at PGI following an accident near Sahora village yesterday. Satinder Singh was riding his bike when he suddenly lost his balance and fell on thorny fence of a field. –– OC

Chandigarh colts enter final

Chandigarh Football Academy will face Dalbir Football Academy in the final match of the 10th Administrator's Challenge Cup Football Tournament for Boys (U-17).

In the semifinal encounters, Dalbir Football Academy defeated Mahilpur Football Academy, while Chandigarh Football Academy drubbed Gorkha Training Centre, at the Sector 17 football stadium here today.

The first match played between Punjab-based teams, saw both the teams fighting hard to defeat each other. The match kept the audience on their toes for over 105 minutes. Both the teams could score no goal in the stipulated time or the extra time of 15 minutes. The fate of the match was decided in the tiebreaker. In the tiebreaker, the members of Dalbir Football Academy proved their supremacy and won the match 4-1. Kirpal Singh, Santosh Kumar, Harpreet and Sukhjit Singh successfully converted their spot kicks for the winning side. Goalkeeper Agiapal Singh proved too good for Mahilpur side to beat. Manpreet Singh was the lone goal scorer for the losing side.

In the second semifinal encounter, the local favourites Chandigarh Football Academy drubbed Gorkha Training Centre 4-0. After a goalless first half, Inder posted the first goal for the winning side after he smartly placed a grounder in the 51st minute, while Daniel doubled the lead in the 76th minute. As the team began to get into a flow, Samuel put the team ahead by 3-0 in the 79th minute. In the dying minutes, K Lal sealed the team’s victory after scoring the last goal in the 87th minute through a penalty kick. The final encounter will take place on October 23.

Punjab lose to Delhi on home turf

Punjab lost to Delhi on the home turf in the ongoing Vinoo Mankad Trophy for Boys (U-19) at PCA Stadium, Mohali. Delhi won the match by 47 runs. After being put to bat first, the Delhi side set a target of 254 runs in 50 overs. After a shaky start, Hardik Pawa and Nitish Rana stitched a partnership of 138 runs for the 4th wicket. Hardik was caught by Rohan Marwaha off Amritpal Bajwa for 70 off 104 balls inclusive of 7 boundaries.

Nitish Rana completed 122 off 134 laced with 13 sweetly timed boundaries and took the team’s total to 254 runs. For Punjab, Amritpal Bajwa claimed four for 53 while Siddharth Sharma took 2 for 42.

In reply, the Punjab team folded up their innings for 207 in 45.3 overs. Bhupinder Singh (45 off 71 with 5 boundaries) and Simranpreet Singh (40 off 61 with one boundary) had a 80-run partnership for the third wicket. For Delhi, Akarshit Gumail was the pick of the bowlers after claiming four for 33 and Vision Panchal claimed three for 43.

8-year-old Arnav wins black belt

Eight-year-old Arnav Bansal became the youngest black belt winner during the Choi-Kwang-Do Martial Art School of Education (CMSE) Black Belt Test held here today. The International Black Belt Exam was organised by Choi Kwang Do Federation of India (CFI) Under the guidance of Master Bikram S Thapa (5th degree Black Belt, USA).

Col CK Nayudu Trophy
Chopra’s ton aids HP’s chase against Punjab

Prashant Chopra completed a brilliant century against Punjab during the third-day play of the ongoing Col CK Nayudu Trophy being played here today. He scored 103 off 145 for Himachal Pradesh, studded with 16 boundaries and three sixes. He was well supported by Saransh Thakur, who scored 70 runs and was a part of 155-run partnership stand with Prashant.

Chasing Punjab’s huge score of 542 runs, the team of Himachal Pradesh scored 280 for 5 in 100 overs.

Saransh and Prashant kept the Punjab bowlers at bay and hammered 155 runs within 47.1 overs. Prashant completed 103 runs before he was dismissed by left arm spinner Yogesh Kumar. Later, Sumit Verma joined Saransh and added 49 runs for the second wicket before Yogesh trapped Saransh for 70 off 200, inclusive of 10 boundaries.

Himachal Pradesh kept on losing wickets at regular intervals and scored 280 runs for 5. Bowler Yogesh Kumar claimed three for 90 while Gurinder Singh returned with figures of two for 48.

GMSSS-26 eves lift U-19 cricket trophy

The girls cricket team of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 26 (Timber Market) bagged the title at the Inter-School Women Cricket Tournament for Girls (U-19) here today. In the final encounter of the tourney, the team outplayed Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 19 by 24 runs.

While batting first, the winning side posted a total of 149 runs in the allotted slot of 20 overs. Preeti (45), and Anita(28) were the main contributors. For the bowling side, Himanshi and Monika Pandey took two wickets each. In reply, the losing side was bundled out on 125 runs in 19 overs. Neha, Anita and Poonam claimed three wickets each.

The team of DAV Model School, Sector 15, finished third in the competition.

The DAV team defeated Ryan International School, Sector 49, by 2-0.
