Dera Bassi Municipal Council seeks Metro link
Dera Bassi, October 15 A resolution was also passed regarding this demand in the meeting. Harjinder Singh Rangi and councillors said that for the services of metro train was also raised in Zirakpur and Mullanpur. Dera Bassi is also a developed as an industrial and educational hub and various housing projects had been set up here. So there was a need of metro train service here too. The municipal council also received a budget increase of Rs 23 crore to continue development works. Some councillors as Manjeet Kaur Dally, Dayaveer Singh and Naresh Saini had protested the increase in budget. They said that an emergency meeting should have been called when it was felt that there was a need of more money for the development works. They said streets of some colonies, which were in bad condition, should be constructed on preference basis. The proposal for getting a land near Bijanpur village on lease for dumping ground of the city could not be passed due to dearer rates. The plan for dividing city into sectors was presented. Councillor, Dayaveer Singh, said it was wrong to divide city into sectors before extending the area of the municipal council. It should be implemented after increasing the area of council. |

10 get life term for murder
Ambala, October 15 The accused, who were sentenced life term include Himanshu, Gulshan, Nirmal, Naresh, Kala, Rinku, Jeewan, Mandeep, Sanjiv and Chaman Lal. Most of the accused are the residents of adjoining villages of Naraingarh (Ambala). According to prosecution, the deceased Vikas (18) was a resident of Nagoli village near Naraingarh. He was the student of polytechnic college, Bhurewala. On June 10, 2009, when he came out from the polytechnic after attending the classes, some assailants attacked him with iron rods and sticks near the main gate. The father of the deceased is a teacher. Vikas sustained serious injuries on the lower part of his abdomen. He was rushed to the Civil Hospital at Naraingarh where he was declared brought dead. The police had registered a case of murder case against 10 persons on the complaint of his uncle. Urmish Gandhi and Sartaj Singh, the counsels of the complainant, said as many as 18 witnesses were produced in the court to prove the accused guilty. This court had also sentenced life term to 10 persons of the Ambala City in Amrender murder case around one month ago on September 7. |

CBI court denies bail to SI in bribery case
Chandigarh, October 15 SI Naveen Sharma, who was then posted with the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the police, was arrested on September 6 for demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 5 lakh from a Ludhiana resident to ‘settle’ his bail application in court. SI Naveen Sharma is the brother of an acting judge of the district court and is the son of a retired Chandigarh Police Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP). While opposing the bail plea of Naveen, the CBI had stated that investigations in the case are at an initial stage and since the amount of bribe is huge, the SI should not be released on bail. The CBI stated that they are still investigating the case if the SI gets released, it may hamper with their investigations. As per the case, the SI was demanding bribe for not opposing the bail application of Gurvir Shergil, Sukhbir’s wife, which was to come up for hearing in court on the day he was arrested. The CBI had also recovered an amount of Rs 9 lakh from the Sector 46 residence of SI Naveen Sharma following his arrest. Earlier, the CBI court had also rejected the bail application of co-accused SN Aneja, who acted as a conduit, and was arrested in the case along with Naveen. |

Heroin case: Police remand of accused extended
Mohali, October 15 Michael Chukks, a Nigerian, and Balwinder Singh from Baghrian village, who were arrested on October 11, were earlier remanded for three days in police custody. The police sources said that Chukks during interrogation revealed that he had an accomplice, Andy, another Nigerian, who lived at Phase VI. However, a search of the phase by the police proved futile. Sources further said Chukks also revealed that heroin handed over to him allegedly by Balwinder Singh was to be delivered to Delhi. He, however, claimed that he was not told about the name of the person to whom the consignment was to be given or the place of delivery. The local police had arrested Chukks and Balwinder Singh and allegedly seized 2 kg of heroin and cash from their possession. Mohali SSP GS Bhullar, Balwinder Singh had come to deliver the consignment to Chukks when the police nabbed them at Phase III B 2 here. |

Three hurt in firing
Chandigarh, October 15 Kuldeep, the other victim, is also said to be critical as he has sustained injuries on his right shoulder. Kuldeep and Deepak were attacked with swords and stones. “It was in the evening when around 14 assailants attacked the three. The youths were collecting some donations in their locality when they were attacked,” said a police official. “It is a case of old enmity. Recently, a brawl had taken place among the youths at the court as well,” he added. The assailants have been identified by the victims. A case has been registered at the Sector-39 police station against Kalu, Ajay and others. The accused are absconding. |

Man run over by bus, dies
Chandigarh, October 15 The driver of the bus, which belonged to St Stephen School, fled the spot with the vehicle and has been booked under Section 304 A of the IPC. He is yet to be arrested. The mishap occurred when balbir was on way home. The bus hit him from the side and he was crushed under the wheels of the bus. He received a severe head injury and died on the spot. |

Labourer murdered, suspect held
Mohali, October 15 Gurpreet Singh Bhullar, SSP, said today the body of Baijnath (30) was found near an orchard in Sambhalki village. The bloodied body was later identified by the police. The SSP said that Baijnath and the suspect, Dev Nath (22), both of whom belonged to
Jharkhand, were living in the labour colony in Sector 99 near Sukhgarh village. They had yesterday taken Rs 400 each from their contractor, Dalip
Prasad, to make some purchases. Dev Nath and Baijnath were later seen having heated arguments at a vacant plot near the orchard in Sambhalki village. Dev Nath was questioning Baij Nath why he had not bought the required items. He was reportedly threatening him. The police registered a case under Section 302 of the IPC on the statement of the contractor and arrested Dev

Chandigarh, October 15 As per schedule, a total of 16 matches will be played at the same time at two different venues and now facing the flank, the department has failed to explain that how will head-officials will mark there presence, in two different venues, at the same time. Except having a total of eight-referee panel, the department has appointed three technical heads including a match commissioner, a match inspector, a head referee and the presence of these three officials is mandatory in every match. However, as per top officials of the sports department, the local Chandigarh Football Association has appointed them with the consensus of the AIFF (All India Football Federation) and they have no direct role. “As the tournament is backed by the AIFF, it is the duty of the Chandigarh Football Association, to provide the panel. As per rules, we just need to pay them,” said JPS Sidhu, joint director sports. On their presence at two grounds, at same time, the official added, “I think, these three officials will manage to look after all the matches. Out of these, three officials will go at Sector 42 and others will remain here at Sector 17. The national-level tourneys by the AIFF has all particular officials, it might be mandatory here,” said Sidhu. Notably, the ongoing competition is a national-level tourney and teams from all-over India are marking their presence. The tournament is backed by the AIFF and as per rule each match should have these officials besides having a tournament commissioner, who heads the tournament. The commissioner of the match and the other heads look after the smooth conducting of match. It is also clearly mentioned in the brochure of the tournament (Article 15-1), “Protest, if any shall be lodged in writing with the match commissioner, within two hours after the end of the match.” An official, on the basis of anonymity reveled, “The protest could only be made if the match commissioner will remain present on field. A team will not go a wander around to two venues to find the officials and lodge protest. If the tournament is being conducted under aegis of AIFF, they must have appointed equal number of officials or should have different timings of every match,” said a head. On other hand, it is also mentioned in the brochure (Article 16-1), “The disciplinary committee shall be chaired by the Match Commissioner or a Disciplinary Representative Appointed by the AIFF. It shall have three members; the match commissioner, referees/ instructor, a representative of the state association’. Whereas, as per provided document, the tournament has appointed, Rakesh Bakshi (honorary general secretary of the local association), as the Match Commissioner, IP Nagi as Match Inspector and Amrik Singh as chief referee. |
