Happy beginning
Out of sight for four years, Preity Zinta is still the same spunky self as she talks about her romantic film Ishkq in Paris
Manpriya Singh

Preity Zinta provokes questions. Cricket, movies, personal life; each chapter entails a comprehensive treatment and there is always so much to ask. No matter how many times it’s shared, the story still remains untold; this time it’s about her upcoming Ishkq in Paris. “It’s got a happy ending. I like movies with happy endings.” In Chandigarh to launch a new collection of Gitanjali Jewels, we catch her in an exit mode. Meanwhile, she cuts the cake, smiles, poses, does a couple of ‘howdies’, all with the characteristic spunk intact, “Please don’t catch me eating the cake alright.”

“Ishkq in Paris is a romantic comedy, shot completely in Paris. Two strangers meet on a train from Rome to Paris and end up spending the evening together. So what was meant to be a low budget movie, shot up by a few notches. “It’s an average budget movie now. We were shooting in minus 23 degree celsius throughout. It was really tough for the unit, our budget just shot up.” Behind the scenes, it’s a series of things that didn’t go as per plan and still finally fell in place. It begins right from the casting. “I was not supposed to act in the film but finally landed up there. We auditioned many but just couldn’t find the right girl for the role. Till the director asked me to do a photo shoot with the Rhehan Malliek and we looked good together.” As for the hero, “Rhehan Malliek was finalised from among the 50 guys finally auditioned for the role.” Production is where she finally sees herself. “I want to produce movies in the future,” and apart from financing, may be play, “Earthy, rural-based characters.”

It’s almost after a hiatus of four years that a release awaits. “It’s releasing on November 2, which is Shah Rukh’s birthday. We just have to be somehow connected,” she laughs. No two ways about it, ask her a question she’ll tell you the whole story or you ask her a question, she won’t even attempt to answer, “Actually I have a flight to catch. Will anybody please tell me, where can I grab fast food from here?”

Creative bond
Sheershak Anand and Shantanu Ray Chibber wanted to pursue different careers, but destiny brought them together into the field of film-making
Sabia Talwar

Shantanu Ray Chibber and Sheershak Anand, writer-director duo, have a real-life story that reads like a film script. Their bond of friendship has been cemented by the common career they are pursuing now.

Shantanu completed his initial education from Jalandhar, Punjab, and later moved to Kolkata, where he became friends with Sheershak. Shantanu later shifted to Australia to become a professional oceanographer while Sheershak moved to Delhi with the dream of becoming a mathematician.

After years, the two friends reunited for an evening and over drinks, decided to move ahead together in the line of film-making. We catch up.

First break

Shantanu and Sheershak moved to Mumbai in 2005, and their first script was for Neil Nitin Mukesh and Bipasha Basu-starrer Aa Dekhen Zara. Says Shantanu, “We always wanted to direct, but here in Mumbai both of us realised that people should like our concepts first. So, we picked up script-writing.”

Dual relation

Writing and directing being their passion, they enjoy both equally. “Writing and direction, if done by the same set of people, makes the process of film-making much easier. I really enjoy writing as it is a real challenge to come up with original stuff,” says Sheershak. He adds, “It was destiny that got us together. We wanted people to notice our potential,” says Shantanu.

Moving on

Their movies, including 3G, Table 21 and Namak are in the post-production phases. Says Shantanu, “It was a struggle for nearly ten years before our initial break; one must believe in one’s abilities.”

“One needs to be open-minded, determined and observant; that’s how a writer comes up with the characters for a story,” adds Sheershak.

Real achievers

Back in Australia, Shantanu never liked oceanography so his girlfriend suggested that he join a course in film-making. “I started enjoying it. Later, I assisted the director in movies like Matrix and Prem Aggan. I was in Delhi for a short trip when I met Sheershak and the rest is history,” says Shantanu.

Sheershak also has his side of the story to share: “I completed honours in mathematics from Delhi University and wanted to pursue a MCA course. However, I couldn’t clear the papers and was still thinking of options when a chance to become a production assistant came my way.”

From there on, they decided to be the Men on the Moon, which is the name of their production company.

Mind-boggling beat
DJ Sanjay Dutta does not believe in categorising music in different genres. For him good music should be sexy, seductive and intelligent
Jasmine Singh

The constant comparison of Sushi with music is amusing, but then it starts making sense. DJ Sanjay Dutta from Kolkata was once intrigued by Sushi till his friend introduced him to the world of Japanese cuisine! “Likewise for music, if you present it well, why wouldn’t someone lap it up,” says Sanjay as he digs into his plate, neatly cleaning the sticky rice on his plate. Before you get trapped into the world of cuisine, DJ Sanjay Dutta or the Godfather of House Music in India, as people know him, is in Chandigarh to perform at Blue Blazer.

It was one obvious question…so, what will you be playing tonight? The response made us stop scribbling for a nano second. “Music that is sexy, sultry, seductive and intelligent.” He goes on digging in the plate to the last morsel. We understand sexy and sultry, but it’s the mention of ‘intelligent’ music that intrigues.

Sanjay has no problem explaining. “Anything that is made intelligently is intelligent music.” Much before we could exclaim voila, the DJ who has been playing for so long, explains some more. “Intelligent music is something that can make people dance, music that is presented well, and music that I can sway to with my eyes closed,” shares Sanjay.

Now, this is exactly what this DJ has been doing without getting into the business of music production. “I get to hear this strange question sometimes--how can you play music if you are not making it? And I tell them, making and playing music are two different things. I play what I like. I could be losing out on a wee bit of marketability, but I have no qualms about it.”

The rice is gone, it looks he would kill for more! “Food and music are related. Presented well, you will be hooked on to it,” adds Sanjay who has been associated with names like Submerge, Sunburn, Kingfisher party nights, the Dusk.

The words ‘no regrets’ appear one time too many. No regrets about not getting into music production because he can’t sit in front of the computer for more than two hours. No regrets about not going full throttle in the business of music industry. “I believe in the evolution of music. In fact, I have stopped compartmentalising it in various genres--trance, electronic or psychedelic. To me music is just simple good music,” adds Sanjay. Bollywood music, doesn’t that ring a bell? “Sure it does, specially on marriages when I wear a kurta and I eat paan. This is the time when I dance to film music. This is not for discothèques. Music should be something that pulls people to the floor,” he adds.

Just like Sushi…..food and music go hand in hand, right DJ Sanjay?

Crusade for companionship
Harish Gulati aims to help seniors find partners at the dusk of their life
Ashima Batish

Early this year, on Satyamev Jayate, Natubhai Patel, a social worker was applauded for doing a very basic favour to the society. Not that he held a campaign or protested against any wrong doings, he just spared a thought for a neglected section of the society, senior citizens. He found company for people who were alone and didn’t have age on their side. Aspiring to repeat the same, Chandigarh based Harish Gulati has started working for the cause of senior citizens through his foundation, Vedvarsha. “We want senior citizens to contact us and share their details, so that we can accordingly search a partner for them.” He says that more than the materialistic comforts, it’s companionship that matter to people at this age.

Himself a senior citizen and businessman, he even got featured in Satyamev Jayate as one of those inspired by the show and who wishes to make a difference to people’s life. “I tried to get in touch with senior citizens who are all by themselves but there are a lot of apprehensions attached. They fear being with the wrong person and at this age separation is more taxing.”

Considering these issues, Harish is also making arrangements to give legal aid to the members of his foundation. Background of applicants, their financial standing and reputation in the society will be thoroughly enquired about. Legal aid will also help solve family issues. Strangely, it’s not daughters but sons who have a problem with their parent taking the bold step. There are property concerns as well. And, even well-educated youngsters are not comfortable with the idea of getting their 70-year-old parent married or going for a live-in relationship. “The foundation will even organise seminars to educate youngsters about the importance of having a companion at this crucial stage in life.”

Closet secrets
Designer-duo Armaan Mann and Indeep Sukrachakia comes up with an outlet for fashionistas
Sabia Talwar

A designer outlet labelled The Closet started by two friends Armaan Mann and Indeep Sukarchakia boasts of a unique collection of tops, jackets, dresses and kurtas.

Says Armaan, an MBA in marketing, “ Indeep and I were planning to open this store three years back but somehow got busy with our studies and now here we are. Our very first collection includes 135 pieces which we guarantee that one will not find anywhere else.”

So the girls have worked hard to employ tailors who stitch the garments but with the help of their designer brains. “As we keep travelling abroad we observe trends over there. We visualise the garments and the end product is by our tailors,” adds Armaan.

The Closet, the name is close to every girl’s heart. “The name was decided long ago keeping a girl’s point of view in mind. But we plan to work on a collection for guys as well,” says Armaan.

They will be coming up with a collection every two months. We wonder what all the collection includes. “Actually, I’m a NIFT, Delhi pass-out in textile designing. I have learnt that the grace of a garment lies in what fabric it is made of. So we have used colourful crepes, nets, georgettes, satins, cotton-satins for the autumn,” says Indeep.

Well, they have researched on the fashion forecasts for their collections and this time they have used more of floral prints.

“This time we have no theme as such but whatever we have come up with are fashionable and stylish,” adds Indeep. So have they focussed on formal wear?

Says Armaan, “Not at all. Our tops and dresses can be worn for casual lounging as well as formal gathering depending on one’s personal choice.”

Online Guru
Pt Yashpaul may use technology to impart music lessons, but he still strongly advocates the concept of guru-shishya parampara
Mona

Pt Yashpaul inherited his love for classical music. Brought up in a family that revered artistes and put his formal training in music on priority, no wonder, Pt Yashpaul today is one of the leading proponents of Hindustani classical music of Agra Gharana.

Having served music for close to seven decades, Pt Yashpaul is a busy man. If not imparting training in person, he is online, juggling between different time zones, teaching avid learners across America, England, Canada and Australia. “Many of my students from other cities like Hyderabad, Kolkata, Delhi and Mumbai join me online too,” he says.

Been the founder of Music Department in Panjab University, he might choose modern means to impart training in his post-retirement days (he is running 76), but he is all for guru-shishya parampara. He is proud to have been under the tutelage of gurus like Pt Kasturi Lal Ji Jasara.

Inspired by Pt Narayanrao Vyas in his early years, he has looked up to music stalwarts like Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, Vilayat Hussain Khan and Ustad Yunus Hussain Khan. “Sadly, in institutions, the thrust is on syllabus and not on imparting the art of music,” he says. An educationist, composer and musicologist, Pt Yashpaul has travelled to different countries sharing his art. “I have never let other occupations impact my performing aspect,” says Pt Yashpaul who along with his disciple Kashish Mittal has been invited by Chandigarh Sangeet Natak Akademi for Kartik- Music and Dance Utsav. “There is no greater joy than guiding able students through the process,” he signs off hoping to pass on the legacy to deserving disciples.

An officer & a musician

Music and academics have gone hand in hand for Kashish Mittal. Music has been a significant aspect for this national scholarship holder for Hindustani classical music (vocal) right from his childhood. Presently undergoing training, this newly-inducted IAS officer, gives credit to his parents for introducing him to classical music. “My parents’ keen interest in music has made me and my bother Lavish start early,” says Kashish who is not only a disciple of Pt Yashpaul but also his ardent fan. “In music, I find my calm and composure,” he adds. Profession aside, it’s in the realm of music where he wants to go a long way…

Notes from the heart
Mona

Hero se tu kam na lagta

Thara look boy tera killer

Tom Cruise aur Johnny Depp Tera aage chiller…

…are some lines from the recent song Baith Pajero main that’s rocking the charts.

Says composer-singer Santokh Singh, “I love experimenting with genres and languages in my music.” Santokh debuted independently with Jaspinder Narula’s album Sanwaria. Channa Vey followed and it’s been a decade for him in Mumbai now.

The recent hit Baith Pajero main is Santokh’s attempt at creating something typical to Delhi, as demanded by the situation in the film. “I wanted to create something new, something sharabi here. I have used typical Haryanvi accent in this one,” says Santokh, who loves bringing cultural diversity in his creations.

In his career in Mumbai, Santokh has to his credit many films and albums spread over different genres, but this singer-composer is busy studying music further. Classical music, Indian as well as western, draws Santokh; in fact, he is pursuing Masters in Western classic vocal and piano.

An industry full of talented artistes keeps him motivated; AR Rahman, Preetam and Ilayaraja inspire him the most. “Each day is a new learning experience. One learns from old and new alike,” he says.

His upcoming films as music director are Lucky Kabootar and Golu Pappu. “I always knew music is the field that I want to work in right from my childhood,” says this composer, originally from Rajasthan. And music is what he wants to breathe till he lives!

Your show is ending. How are you feeling?

I am sad but I guess every show has to end some day. I am glad it was a good show, which made a difference and stuck a chord with the audiences. We did well in terms of ratings. I will miss the show.

Were you surprised when you heard it was coming to end?

We had been hearing rumours about the show ending since the last six months but when nothing happened we were relieved. This time too we thought it was a false rumour but it turned out to be true. We were all very surprised.

What will you remember about the show?

We had a good team for three years. The whole cast and crew became friends. I will miss their friendship and the fun we had on the sets.

What’s next for you?

I was doing my B.Com when Pratigya came to me, so I couldn’t finish my studies. I want to become a graduate and then think of what to do next. I will go to Ahemdabad where my parents stay and pursue my studies.

What about your marriage plans with beau Raj Singh Arora?

I am 21 and I am too young, no marriage for me for the next seven years.

Are you interested in doing movies?

Well, I haven’t given it much thought. Pratigya kept me busy and right now I am only interested in sleeping properly.

Star track
Aamir to miss Saif-Kareena's wedding

It seems that Aamir Khan might not be able to attend Kareena Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan's wedding. The reason being is the music launch of his movie Talaash.

The movie has already been delayed for too long. It was supposed to release earlier in the year. But Aamir got busy on the small screen, with Satyamev Jayate, his first appearance on television. The launch of the movie is on November 30. The music launch is taking place on October 18.

The cast of the movie includes Kareena, Aamir, Rani and Nawazuddin Siddique. The whole cast is supposed to be present at the music launch, except for Kareena. Also none from the cast would be going to her reception. Though the plot of the movie has not been revealed, it is being said that Rani plays Aamir's wife in the movie. Kareena plays a prostitute, whose name is Rosy. Nawazuddin, who has now become synonymous with great acting, plays an important role in the movie.

The movie has also come into focus, due to allegations that it depicts the Arushi murder case. The makers of the movie have however denied it. In a press release, they said, that Excel Entertainment, which is making the movie is extremely disturbed by the irresponsible media reports which say that the movie had pursued the story of the Arushi murder investigation. They also said that the movie is a work of fiction and has no resemblance to the Arushi Raj murder case. The film production company doesn't want to exploit the feeling of people affected by such gruesome tragedies. They also urged everyone to ignore this false media propaganda.

The writer of the story is Reema Katgi and Zoya Akhtar. Reema is also the director of this movie. Meanwhile, Aamir is showing considerable effort to promote this movie. He is specially flying back from Chicago, USA for this movie's music launch. He is presently shooting there for Dhoom3.

Global invitees

Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor want their wedding to be small. Kareena's family would like it large, inviting anyone and everyone they know! Sharmila Tagore has invited many political figures and members of royalty from India and across the border for the grand wedding reception. Saif's Indian cousins may skip it altogether.

Saif has many friends in London whom he grew up with and he visits them regularly. So they are attending the wedding. The couple also has friends in Switzerland and a special celebration is being planned for them too, if they do not make it for the wedding, Saif is friends with royalty from around the world and Kareena has become friends with his friends too. Some of Saif's royal cousins have not been invited to the wedding. Many members of the extended Pataudi family in India like Faiz Bin Jung are boycotting the wedding of the year altogether. Members of the Pataudi family in Pakistan like Faiza Sultan Khan (Saif's cousin) and Shaharyar Khan (Saif's uncle) could also be coming from Pakistan to attend the wedding. They have already applied for the visa.

Babita and Ranbir Kapoor went to Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Kapoor to extend the invitation for the wedding and reception. They buried their differences to do this because the children get along well and this is a once-in-lifetime-occasion for them. The couple is so busy shooting that they will not have time to go on their honeymoon soon. We wish them the very best!

Sweet reaction

Taking time from his hectic schedule, Shahid Kapoor finally managed to watch Ranbir Kapoor's Barfi! and the actor is all praise for friend Ranbir and Priyanka Chopra. "Finally saw barfi .... Huge shout out to the entire team .... N great to see a genuinely good film perform so well at the box office... Take a bow anurag rk pc illeana utv and the entire team for taking the risk.

Shakun's miffed by law

Film-maker Shakun Batra of Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu fame is upset with the Maharashtra state government who requested the Centre to amend laws seeking ban on drinking and smoking in movies.

"Not producers but the audience needs to fight the stupid smoking warning that comes on screen every time someone smokes. It completely ruins the experience and makes you feel dumb! Especially after you've heard it in the beginning and then in the interval," he said.

"Do we seriously believe there will be lesser number of people smoking because of this? I understand the problem, but let's be realistic this is not the solution!" he added.

The year ahead
Madan Gupta Spatu

If your birthday is October 14...

Do not be too demanding with your colleagues. You're one of the most hard working people in the organization. Still, imposing your ethics on others will result in misery. It's better to assess people's talents and contributions on an individual basis. Your gift is to work above and beyond the call of duty. Another person may have a knack for finding brilliant solutions to stubborn problems. It's all good, provided everyone feels appreciated.

You have no qualms about saying what you think. Quite the reverse, in fact, and you may be so eager to put across your point of view that you pay little thought to how it comes across. As a result you may sound rather glib or unfeeling, or it may seem that you're taking a superficial view of a tricky situation.

Get input from multiple sources. You're particularly open to different points of view now - an excellent state of mind for progressive synthesis. But be attuned to your automatic, preconditioned reaction to change.

You'll be given a new responsibility and will complete it successfully. This will lead to praise. A good opportunity may come to young people looking for a job, which, albeit not in their specialisation, is very attractive.

Do not try to juggle when you have your hands full! Move quickly but very carefully along the slippery slope. Your success depends on your focus and energy. Do not be afraid to break a date if an important opportunity arises.

You appear to have a great deal expected of you. You will need family cooperation. Make sure everyone is 'on the same page' and knows your needs and agenda. Delegate duties and plan a 'reward' of some kind.

You should make new plans only after careful analysis of the present circumstances. Avenues of needless spending are likely to crop up. A friend may make an 'assumption' about you and for some of you it might be a problem to solve tactfully while for others it may bring an opportunity of some kind. People born under the sign of Capricorn, Libra, Aries and Aquarius will be very helpful. Mood: Anxious to shine.
