Three drug peddlers arrested

Fatehgarh Sahib, October 13
The district police has arrested three drug peddlers, two whisky smugglers today. The police has recovered 1 kg opium, smack, narcotics powder, and 24 bottles of whisky from them. HS Mann, SSP, said the campaign launched by the district police against drug peddlers, smugglers and anti-social elements have been intensified.

He said people had started providing information about drug peddlers and anti-social elements. He said the police had received the information that Gurmeet Singh, resident of Amloh, was involved in the sale of opium and smack in the district. The police erected a check post near Bhadalthua village and arrested Gurmeet Singh with1 kg opium. He said the CIA staff of Mandi Gobindgarh had arrested Rinku, a resident of Karnal, Haryana, and recovered 50 gm smack and 272 gm narcotic powder from him.

In another incident The Mandi Gobindgarh police arrested two whisky smugglers, identified as Des Raj and Chander Singh, and recovered 24 bottles of whisky from them. — TNS

SARAS fair draws huge crowd

Patiala, October 13
The 12-day Rural SARAS Fair that began at Patiala's Sheesh Mahal on October 11 is a fine blend of tradition and modernity. About 300 artists, who have come from different parts of the country, are showcasing their talent. The fair has all arrangements for shopping and entertainment, which are drawing huge crowd from far off places. While the footfall in the morning hours today was 5,100, it reached around 13,000 in the evening.

The fair is a heaven for shopaholics who are fond of buying stuff of different states. The wares covers a wide variety, ranging from artificial jewellery to silk and cotton suits with traditional Punjabi embroidery.

The best part is that the stuff ranges from Rs 10 to thousands, thus enabling people from all economic brackets to buy the products.

Apart from offering wide variety of products, delicacies of different states are another highlight of the fair. The most popular among those are the Rajasthani food items, including Rajasthani thali, dal bati and different type of kachoris.

SHO’s salary withheld
Had failed to appear as witness in court

In a major jolt for the then station house officer(SHO) of the Sector-5 police station, Inspector Om Prakash, the court today directed to withhold his salary with effect from September 1. Failing to appear before the Judge as a witness in the Sector-10 dacoity case, the court directed not to disburse his salary till the time he did not appear in the court. Om Prakash is currently posted at Gurgaon.

The Sector-10 dacoity case, which had hit the headlines in 2010, came up for hearing today before the Additional District and Sessions judge, Kanchan Mahi. Om Prakash had to appear before the Judge to give evidence in the case. For the past many hearings, the then SHO was not deposing in the court so the action was taken.

Sources also said that Om Prakash had not got his salary for the past seven months in another such case. Om Prakash has moved an application in the court in the previous case to release his salary and now this is the second case.

Talking to Chandigarh Tribune over the phone, Om Prakash said, “I will get the matter sorted out. Actually I was busy in the Maruti case here at Gurgaon so could not appear before the Judge.”

It was in 2010 when seven to eight armed robbers looted cash and jewellery worth Rs 15 lakh after keeping 13 members of a family hostage for over three hours at their home in Sector 10 in the wee hours.

The incident came to light when two children of the family came out of the house after breaking the pane of clerestory (“roshandaan”) and alerted a neighbour residing in the back lane. Neighbouring residents then broke open the locks of the front door of the house and informed the police.

Former P’kula ADC gets bail

Praveen Kumar, HUDA administrator, Gurgoan, and Panchkula Additional Deputy Commissioner (2008) was granted bail in the Morni misbehaviour case.

Kumar had reportedly misbehaved with two women, residents of Morni, in a matter related to land.

The case had hit the headlines in year 2008 when in a land dispute case in Morni. The women, Kamla and Ratni, had met the ADC where he allegedly thrashed and misbehaved with them.

Kumar today appeared in the court and was granted bail in the matter.

Two call centre employees held for lifting vehicles

Chandigarh, October 13
The Chandigarh Police arrested two call centre employees for theft of two-wheelers and recovered nine two-wheelers and a car from their possession. The accused who are drug addicts have a criminal past used to steal the two-wheelers and sell its part by dismantling it.

The accused also used to keep some of the stolen vehicles in busy parking places after driving it around.

Ashish Kapoor, DSP (Central), said witnessing alarming rise in incidents of vehicle theft, a special campaign was initiated to trace out the thieves.

“Informers were also deployed to keep a tab on vehicle lifters. On a tip of, the police party of Sector11 police station, while checking, apprehended two persons Baldev Singh, resident of Sector 41, and Sandeep Kant, resident of Sector 44, at a naka laid near Cremation Ground, Sector 25, and recovered stolen motorcycle from their possession”, the DSP said.

The police stated that during the course of further interrogation, one Maruti car, nine two-wheelers, two laptops and five mobile phones were recovered.

Revealing the modus-operandi, the police stated that the accused use to steal the vehicles from different parts of the city and dispose the of by dismantling its parts to different scrap-dealers so that they could buy drugs.

The DSP said that both the accused are employees of a Mohali-based call centre and they also have previous criminal record.

A case has been registered at Sector 11 police station and further investigations are on.

Two held for eve-teasing

Chandigarh, October 13
Chandigarh Police arrested two occupants of a Honda CRV car, bearing a registration number of Himachal Pradesh, for chasing and teasing two girls near Aroma light point, Sector 22, yesterday night.

The incident took place around 1.30 am when the girls on a two-wheeler were returning from Hotel Aroma. Two occupants, identified as Lavanya Puri of Shimla and Sandeep Gill of Mohali, has been arrested and their car was impounded. The car (HP-76-0003) belongs to Lavanya, who stays at Sector 8, Chandigarh. The co-accused is a student of DAV-10. The police said the name of person on whose name the car was registered is yet to be ascertained. The police stated that the accused started chasing the girls from Aroma light point following which the girls raised objection near Piccadilly roundabout and called the police control room. — TNS

Immigration company dupes residents of Rs 28 lakh

A number of residents were allegedly duped of over Rs 28 lakh by an immigration company at Phase VI here.
The police said Mewa Singh, a resident of Kharar, had alleged that Deepak Arora and Karandeep Singh had taken Rs 16.12 lakh from 16 people with a promise of sending them abroad.

However, they were not sent abroad and their money was not returned. In another case, Gurvinder Singh, a resident of Dhuri, had also complained to the police that teh accused had taken Rs 12.20 lakh from four people on the same pretext.

Both complaints were inquired into by the SHO of Phase I police station. The police has also registered cases against the two accused under Section 24 of the Immigration Act and Sections 406, 420 and 120B of the IPC.

Ramghria win volleyball meet

The volleyball team of Ramghria Girls College, Ludhiana, won the Panjab University Inter-College Volleyball Championship for Women, here today. In the final of the tourney Ramghria college defeated the PU campus by 23-8 while Postgraduate Government College for Girls, Sector 42, attained the third place after beating Dev Samaj College for Women, Sector 45, by 21-9. — TNS

Punjab clinch Dhruv Pandove Trophy

Chandigarh, October 13
Punjab has won the second All-India Dhruv Pandove Trophy for Boys (u-19) here today. Resuming from the overnight total of 277 for 5, Punjab scored 514 in its innings.

Maninder Singh and Mohit Handa delivered a partnership of 98 runs for the sixth wicket before Maninder was caught by Mayank Jain off Kulpreet Singh for 92. Later, Mehjot Sodhi joined Mohit and the duo piled 99 runs for the seventh wicket. Thereafter, Vinay Chaudhary (49) along with Amritpal Singh (17) helped Punjab to achieve the total. MPCA medium- pacer Kulpreet Singh claimed 4 for 181. MPCA in its second innings scored 101 for 2 in 33 overs at the end of the match. Atul Tiwari (70) and Abhishek Sharma (20) were the main scorers.

Saupin's defeat St Kabir

Chandigarh, October 13
The cricket team of Saupin's School, Sector 32, had defeated St Kabir School, Sector 26, in the final of the Inter-School Cricket Tournament for Boys (u-14) today.

After opting to bat first, The St Kabir School team could manage only 71 runs for the loss of 9 wickets in 20 overs. Shivanshu (13) was the top scorer for his team while Pranay(11) and Hrithik(12) were other main contributors. For Saupin's, Manav and Jakshu took 3 wickets each. In reply Prabhjeet guided Saupin's to victory after scoring an unbeaten 39 runs. He was supported by Satyam (15) and Manav (9). — TNS
