In a spiritual role
Accepting everyone as they are is the way to spiritualism, says veteran actor Suresh Oberoi
Change is the way of life and we must accept it…is what Suresh Oberoi preaches and practices. A known actor with over 150 films to his credit where he essayed a variety of roles, including that of an inspector, Army Major, judge, public prosecutor to lottery-seller, one is rather used to his presence even if it’s been only on screen. On Friday, as he stepped down in a five-star hotel
lobby, there were people falling to his feet giving him treatment befitting a saint. His lecture at the 13th Annual National Conference of Private Psychiatry left many moved. Proud of the spiritual legacy that we Indians inherit, Suresh says, “Our country is diverse, we have the richest of the lot and the poorest, but we have all lived together because we are spiritually advanced.” Body being a mere manifestation to carry on the spiritual journey is how Suresh sees it. Always known for his clear voice and diction, he preaches well too. He quotes two common names in the region, “Just reflect on the two names Manjit and Jagjit. It’s only after you control your inner self that you can win the world.” From the glamour industry to the spiritual realm, hasn’t that been a huge shift? Change is the norm, he says, and insists that all of us are spirits if only we bother to see. About the role of the screen, he says, “In our profession, retirement doesn’t come soon. I will continue to work.” He hasn’t been following films for the last decade-and-a-half, but has seen son Vivek’s Kismat Love Paisa Dilli. “I liked the film,” he smiles. Just before marching out for another lecture, he summarises his principle in one example. Quoting the famous line of Alexander: Tell me how would you like to be treated? Porus: Treat me Alexander, as befits a king. “We all are souls. And should treat others as we want us to be treated,” he says. mona@tribunemail.com

Brain-storming session
The cast and crew of Saadi Wakhri Hai Shaan feel there is more than just comedy that Punjabi movies need to highlight…
Going by the number of Punjabi movies being made and released, we are definitely catching up with Bollywood at a rapid rate! Saadi Wakhri Hai Shaan, set for an October 12 release, adds to the number. Sangram Singh and Mandy Takhar are in the lead roles and the movie has been directed by Gurbir Grewal, who has been appreciated earlier in movies like Mannat and Yaar Pardesi. Says Gurbir, “Our objective was to do something different from the run-of-the-mill stuff. I know it will sound very clichéd if I say that our storyline is totally different.” After the success of Jatt and Juliet and Carry on Jatta is this movie also relying on comedy? “Of course, comedy is a part of this movie but we are focusing on a little bit of everything, including drama, romance, action, comedy and much more; it’s a complete family entertainer,” adds Gurbir. Saadi Wakhri Hai Shaan puts across the message of brain-drain. Says Gurbir, “Punjabis have been portrayed as larger-than-life, but there are certain serious issues that they face and one of them is brain-drain as all the talent just shifts abroad.” Meanwhile, the young and fresh Punjabi actor Sangram Singh is all-excited about his second movie. Says Sangram, “I’m the lead actor and playing the role of a boxer in the movie. In my first movie Pure Punjabi I played a negative character, but in Saadi Wakhri Hai Shaan I play the character of Sikander Singh Sekhon and had to do so many things at a time. I totally loved dancing on romantic tracks with Mandy.” Sangram, who hails from Jalandhar and currently residing in Mumbai, says he never planned to become an actor but always a police officer. “I started with modelling for which I moved to Mumbai and was offered Pure Punjabi. If one needs to progress in the field of acting, one should go to Mumbai as there are more opportunities.” A few comments from a senior artiste are a must to put some more light on the changing times. Says Shivendra Mahal, who has given amazing performances in around seventy Punjabi movies, till now, “There is a lot of difference in the scene of Punjabi cinema; earlier there were hardly any budgets and the storylines were restricted to merely villages and even technology wasn’t that advanced, but now one just needs a good story and dedication. Punjabi cinema has grown by leaps and bounds and it’s getting the recognition it deserves.” The movie is produced by a skillful team, including Dr Inder Roop Singh Ghuman, who is a Doraha-based physician, Dr Sukhpal Mangat, a dental surgeon, and Bikramjit Gill, an engineer. “The whole idea of the story was gathered when we all used to sit together and analyse how many of our batch-mates have gone abroad. And that is the current scenario where all the professionals prefer serving abroad rather than in India,” says Dr Rupan, a dental surgeon, who is also the costume designer for the movie. Although the movie promises to be an entertainer, the message it carries will seal the deal! sabiatalwar@tribunemail.com

The year ahead
If your birthday is October 7...
With the expressive Moon and stern Saturn in challenging aspect, you will have to bite your tongue. What you say can and will be used against you. You will feel better knowing that you did not participate in the attack on someone's good name. For a contented life, improve your mental toughness. Simply ignore those who approach you for temporary loans. New look, new outfits and new friends will be on the way. You will be unable to express your feelings to your beloved. You will suffer disappointment, as recognition and rewards that you were expecting get postponed. Pleasure trip will be satisfying. The trust you've built and the care you put into your work truly shows, with rewards and new opportunities coming your way. Those you've helped are ready to help you. Face issues without delay and don't just skim the surface. You'll have to use a lot of energy to accomplish what you have in mind. It won't be easy, but the stars will reward your effort. If you work in a team, you'll be slightly on the edge and risk having pointless quibbles with co-workers as well as collaborators. You should avoid this. If you keep trying to tinker with the impossible circumstances, you will only make a bad situation worse. Some things that are severely damaged can be repaired, but there are other ‘social disaster’ areas that you should just walk away from. Upgrades and 'beautiful' improvements are likely and while they may not be cost effective, they will be 'life enhancing’, especially for the family as a unit. Attention to spouse and in-laws will be necessary for some reason. A friendly and light-hearted event may be a celebration of some kind. You should not spend too much time thinking about it and accept the offer without hesitation. It may have a clause that work has to be completed in a specified time. Mood: creative, cheerful and eager Compatible signs: Aquarius, Leo Lucky
colours: Turquoise, Yellow Lucky days: Monday and Wednesday. Lucky Numbers: 5, 9, 12, 14, 40
You share your birthday with Abhijeet Sawant (October 7, 1981), who was a finalist in Clinic All Clear Jo Jeeta Wohi Superstar. He became the first runner-up of the show. The song Mohabbatein Lutaunga of his album Aapka Abhijeet Sawant made him popular. He made his acting debut with the movie Lottery besides appearing in Comedy Circus. His stars do not support him much in the film line. He also tried his hands at comedy, but flopped.
