Roots that run deep
Eminent theatre person Nadira Zaheer Babbar believes in delivering hard-hitting facts with a coat of entertainment
Nonika Singh

Call her the Begum of stage or empress of theatre, eminent theatre personality Nadira Zaheer Babbar is without doubt the queen of all she surveys. Not the one to be intimidated, she talks with courage of conviction that is hard to challenge and impossible to put down.

In Chandigarh with her latest production Yaar Banaa Buddy, she is vociferous about the subject of the play which she has not only directed but also written. Irked by the growing globalisation of Indian culture, the fast- spreading anglicization of our way of living, she fumes, “With each passing day we are moving away from our roots.” As she came across more and more Indians taking less and less pride in our native languages, the play that is an incisive peep into our pseudo values, took birth. Much of what she writes is biographical, a fall-out of what she observes.

Of course, when she puts it by way of a play the acid test of the script always lies in, “Will audiences take back something from it?” Indeed, it must entertain too, a reason why her plays appeal to all, from masses to classes.

She says, “See we state the truth, often bitter but we cloak it in a sugar-coated presentation.” Not even once digressing away from the meaningfulness of theatre, her theatre group Ekjute has completed a long journey of over three decades. The most challenging aspect of keeping a theatre group going, she avers, “is to be able to consistently do good work.”

Between keeping the old productions like Dayashankar Ki Diary and Begum Jaan alive and creating new ones she says, “We need to do new plays to rejuvenate ourselves.” You bet Begum Jaan in which she delivered one of the most stellar performances of theatre is her all-time favourite. The actor in her is certainly tempted each time a role brimming with possibilities catches her attention. With a twinkle in her eye, she jokes, “My biggest regret has been that my acting potential could not be fully exploited. That’s the price I have paid for forming Ekjute. Imagine in 32 years I got a chance to act only in two plays of my group.”

On a serious note, this actor of Bride and Prejudice could have acted in many more films and television too. But as she puts it sardonically, “Don’t forget Biwiyoon ki biwiyaan nahi hoti….” The task of a homemaker she feels can’t be shared by any husband, howsoever, supportive. Sure her actor politician spouse Raj Babbar has supported her theater endeavour.

She quips, “That’s why I am here.” Standing tall with awards like Sangeet Natak Akademi, is she content with what she has achieved? Yes and no. Hazaraon khawishein aisi… among the many unfulfilled wishes there is a desire to own her theatre space, even direct a film some day. On the flip side, she is happy that theatre has begun to sell and not just in Mumbai where she is settled but in other cites as well. Both audiences and sponsorships have grown too. Though she has no problems working with film stars (actor Yashpal Sharma has a key role in Yaar Banaa Buddy) she comes down heavily against theatre of bedroom comedies that rides high on flop heroines. That she feels has worked to the detriment of theatre. Calling spade a spade is one of the many sterling qualities this gutsy talented woman has.

Beyond performance

Theatre festivals one of which Chandigarh Theatre Festival that brought Nadira Zaheer Babbar to Chandigarh, she feels are important. But even more productive she opines would be a direct interface with theatre persons of the city. Only then, she reasons, “The walls of prejudice yeh Mumbai waale hai…. hence they have an edge could be knocked down.” For theatre lovers she is willing to do anything, even make monetary concessions and stage her plays for a lesser fee.

Candid call
Bollywood actor Yashpal says theatre is the perfect training ground for films
Jasmine Singh

While the entire gang of small, not very big and big goons painted Wasseypur red in blood, he held on to the mike and crooned the most excruciating songs of death, Yaad teri aayegi mujhko bada sataayegi and Teri meherbaniyan. The house mourned for the loss of Manoj Bajpai, but the audiences didn’t shed a tear, thanks to actor Yashpal Sharma’s unintentional mocking. This was a special appearance and indeed this actor made it special in his own way!

“I met Anurag on a flight. He asked me to do a small role in GOW (Gangs of Wasseypur) and because he is a friend, I agreed. The role fell into my hands like prasad. I just took it up and did whatever I had to without thinking whether it would be noticed or not. Yes, if GOW 3 is made I would definitely have something big coming my way.”

Seated next to his director Nadira Zaheer Babbar at the Tagore Theatre, Chandigarh, Yashpal saw the whole session unfurl from behind his dark shades. No one asked though whether it was a style statement or the lack of sleep, but when you have an actor like Yashpal in front it his words that interest more.

“Films and theatre are intermingled. I am doing seven-eight plays. There is no difference between how much of theatre I carry in films and vice-versa,” says Yashpal. He adds, “When I do films I am completely into them, likewise when I rehearse for a play. Besides, being a trained actor from NSD, I can now tear myself from one role and slip into another.”

It is NSD that is sometimes used to differentiate actors from good actors? Yashpal nods. “A theatre background does get me respect in Bollywood, which is true for other actors like Om Puri and Naseeruddin Shah who have theatre background. My choice of roles in movies comes from theatre and common sense. Theatre lends a new lease to life and is more satisfying than films.”

Contradiction lurks! “But some films like Lagaan are an experience,” adds Yashpal. Yashpal will now be seen in Ata Pata Laapta. His take on daily soaps is clear. “They are good, but affect the creativity of actors,” he says.

Producer Leslee Udwin, wants to highlight movies that sensitise society through her project People’s Cinema
Ashima Batish

It’s difficult to decide what is more important — the cause or its propagator. Should the personality be given preference over the actions that make her one? After ten minutes of interaction, the puzzle gets solved with a little help from the person in question. “People in India know me; they have given me a lot of love. This is rather the right time to talk about the project at hand,” says Leslee Udwin, producer of popular films East is East and its sequel West is West.

Leslee is once again in India from London, this time not for a film but a social project, People’s Cinema, a unique education initiative that will take independent cinema to all colleges and universities of India. They have also tied-up with prominent names from the industry, who will support the cause. Now independent cinema certainly doesn’t comprise any movie from the 100-crore elite club or one that has got a standing ovation at an international film festival. “In fact, these could be films that never saw the light of the day or where distributors didn’t show enough confidence to release them in single screen theatres, but these films make for sensible cinema and have the potential to bring change in the lives of people,” says Leslee. What makes her confident about the success of the programme is the rousing response its dummy test received in three cities —Yamunanagar, Gurgaon and Faridabad. “There are films that promise exposure, knowledge and most importantly sensitise the society. It’s the power of cinema that I wanted to utilise through this project.” Language, she says, will not be a barrier. Films will be brought in from the US, UK, Iran and other countries. Language problems will be solved by sub-titles. The initiative will begin from Haryana, Delhi and NCR in India and gradually move to other states. “We will cover each college and university in the slotted areas, no matter how far these educational institutes are from the main cities.” The only hassle this ‘not-for-profit’ initiative is facing is inadequate funds. The sponsors, Leslee says, will come forward to help once the project gains ground.

“There are a lot of corporate houses who are fulfilling their social responsibility. And for a cause that will have a national appeal, I am sure a lot of big firms will come forward and provide funds.” Without mincing words, she even adds that the programme will provide instant publicity to the sponsors. “Don’t forget our target is the young audience.” Don’t forget it’s a first-of-its kind initiative being taken up in India!

Exploring Thailand

Their intricate costume jewellery and elaborate outfits make them a graceful lot. Dressed in pinks, purples and oranges, the group of dancers from Thailand make for a perfect picture.

In Chandigarh for the upcoming five-day Thailand Trade Show, the dancers make themselves comfortable with the shutterbugs. The fair, which will offer several finished products like cosmetic and spa products along with handicraft items, is sure to loosen the strings in your purse. Hoping to take the trade between India and Thailand to another level, Soonthorn Chaiyindeepum, minister and Jain Liamminful, minister-Commercial, Royal Thai Embassy, talk about the similarities between India and Thailand. "Lot of our language is a mix of Sanskrit and Thai," Soonthorn says. As the dancers continue to fix their eye makeup and touch up on the lip colour, the focus of the interaction changes to the exotic products, which will adorn the 498 stalls. Apart from the garments and jewellery, the fair will also include fresh fruits from Bangkok.

A delightful wok

Just as you enter Bella Asia at Bella Vista, a gush of aromatic dips and sauces intoxicate your senses. The jumbo prawn, stuffed with various Chinese delicacies sits on the shelf as Chef Duddi Reny Manohar garnishes it carefully. “We want to introduce Chandigarh to better Chinese like lobsters and salmon,” he says. Bella Vista’s food festival Wok Of Life, a feast from the West, features cuisine from China, Thailand and everything Oriental.

Being a pan-Asian restaurant, the aim is to fill in the lull period before the festive season begins. Hence, the line-up of hargao and money bag, two different types of dimsums.

Try out the garnished satay. Chef Reny,

“The menu has been divided into dimsums, satays and the main course includes fineries from the grill and wok tossed,” he says. Offering only the authentic recipes for starters and main course, the experiments have been limited only to the satays. “The Indian palette is such that no matter how hard we try, the customer always looks for the spices,” he adds. Refuting the statement that Chandigarh food lovers are experimental, the chef says, “It is only the younger generation, which has travelled abroad, that really understand exotic western dishes.”

Taking a different route towards desserts, satisfy the sweet tooth by digging into tab tim grop, an interesting way of presenting water chestnut or just grab hold of the tropical millie feullie lined with tropical fruits and pastries.

While meat lovers will have a variety of options, vegetarians too need not fret. “We have done almost everything for the vegetarian menu,” he says, just as a neatly done tray of dimsums is laid. ‘It’s vegetarian’, we are told as the tangy taste of the ginger-dip adds to our epicurean experience. So if it is the delight of the South East Asia which you have been missing, the expreince here will certainly not dissapoint you and take you back into the far easrten locations.

Now, is the time to lose your senses and surrender to the prawns, the thai curries and the del;ightful momos.

Statuesque!
Sukhmani

Gardens today are an extension of your homes. Garden statues have graced gardens for centuries. Statues add a decorative element to the landscape and highlight the architecture of your home.

A cowboy statue in front of a ranch style house, for instance, augments the house's style. Garden statues are a 'hardscaping' landscape element that coordinates well with 'softscaping' features like flowers and shrubs. They not only enhance the look of your garden but also act as space fillers in a large garden to avoid the garden from looking empty.

The choice of the garden statues must be done on basis of certain guidelines-what type of a garden do you wish to create? What is the scale of your garden? What mood or theme do you want to convey? And what materials will best suited for your garden style?

Placements

You can use a garden statue as a focal point to enhance the aesthetics of your garden. Large statues can make a great statement without much supporting landscaping; a well-manicured lawn can make a large statue stand out prominently. Large statues might also be placed in front of a tall garden hedge. A bright white statue in front of a dark green hedge contrasts nicely.

Small to medium-sized statues make ideal accent pieces for flowerbeds and other landscape features. Use staggered or sporadic spacing to create a more natural look. Ivy and other climbing vines can be trained to climb up statues to help them blend with the garden plants.

Statues can also be used to accent or define a garden pathway. Place two statues on either side of the pathway, either at the ends or throughout the length to add an appealing element. If the landscape has a bench or set of decorative chairs, a small statue, such as a sitting gnome can be placed on the edge of the seat.

If you want to establish a peaceful feeling in your garden, try to keep most of the garden art low to the ground and unobtrusive. Then again, if you want your garden to be invigorating and energising, use lots of vertical elements.

Selecting natural colours or colours similar to your plants will create a more restful feeling, while contrasting colours create excitement.

The kind of garden art that you choose can really help tie together the elements of your garden and create the feeling that you want.

Create an Asian-inspired garden with a statue, or several statues that fit the theme. Buddhist temples, Buddha and dragons are some common choices.

You can also place several statues together to create a theme or mood.

Group together wild animals, fairies, cherubs or barn animals to create a stone garden that is whimsical and unique.

Lastly do give a thought to the material of the sculptures in relation to the weather conditions. You don't want to end up with statues that cannot withstand the heat, dampness, humidity or those that will crack and split during winters.

Train to the Oscar
Apart from Barfi, the year saw several well-deserving films, equally worthy of Oscars

The Information and Broadcast Ministry has chosen Barfi! as India's official entry to the Oscars. We think that the film is wonderful though not of Oscar caliber and we doubt it will be selected. So here are our suggestions for what should have been sent to the Oscars.

Why not: Poster of Vicky DonorA suitable film
Vicky Donor

This was a highly original concept and film which was endearing in its simplicity. To the Oscar Board, it would have looked like an Iranian film. The movie had excellent performances and universal appeal. It was commercial yet innovative and entertaining.

A hit and still missed!
The Gangs of Wasseypur saga:

Anurag Kashyap's masterfully executed dream film is so distinctly Indian. It is ruthless and true to the subject. The film is entertaining and engaging with a myriad interesting characters. We haven't had such an enjoyable mafia saga in a long while and it could be our Godfather. This cinematic achievement also got a standing ovation at Cannes so it deserved being sent to the Oscars.

Strong contender
I Am Kalam

What a beauty with splendid performances from the cast, especially the child actors! This is a movie, the Oscar Committee would have adored because it is so unapologetic-ally Indian, honest, heart-rending, sweet and has a happy ending. Moreover, it was acclaimed at the National Awards of India and many festivals abroad.

Cut above the rest
Kahaani

This is Sujoy Ghosh and Vidya Balan's masterpiece that kept everyone hooked and guessing till the end. There is not one flaw we can pick in this movie. It was truly unconventional and original and captured the Indian city of Kolkata in a stunning way. Vidya was exceptional and even seasoned movie-goers would not have guessed the suspense.

The man of the moment
Paan Singh Tomar

The Oscar committee loves biopics and this was a fine biopic with a supreme performance by Irrfan Khan. It was entertaining in a rustic manner and respectfully portrayed its protagonist. A genuinely good film.

For old times sake

Amitabh Bachchan who recently watched English Vinglish praised Sridevi and the director Gauri Shinde. “’English Vinglish’ a delightful film, tender, soft, beautiful, relevant .. Sridevi immaculate, director Gauri Shinde .. YMUP !! YMUP: You Make Us Proud!! .. a woman director, first time film and such maturity in its execution .. woman power on the rise !!’ he tweeted.“

Now two distinguished directors under one roof - R Balki and wife Gauri Shinde ... Indian Cinema 100 years now and for eternity !!” he added.

Bachchan will be seen in a special appearance in English Vinglish. It is almost after a gap of 19 years that Sridevi and Big B will be seen together on-screen. They last worked together in 1993 in Khuda Gawah.

It’s a girl!

Bollywood star Akshay Kumar and his wife Twinkle Khanna were blessed with a daughter last morning. This is the couple's second child after 10-year-old son Aarav. "Twinkle was blessed with a baby girl this morning," Twinkle's mother, veteran actress Dimple Kapadia said.

Twinkle delivered the baby at the Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai. "Both mother and daughter are fine," Vijay Zaveri, a family friend said. Akshay has been busy promoting his forthcoming film Oh My God, set to release this Friday. He was by his wife's side to welcome their daughter. — IANS

House warming: Sunny Leone Sunny Leone finally finds a home!

If the rumours are to be believed, Sunny Leone is having a tough time finding an apartment and getting approval from housing societies in Mumbai because of her porn star image.

However, Sunny cleared the air and said that she has already finalised a place. “The news about me is not true. Not sure where that information came from. But I have a place finalised in India,” Sunny updated.

She also denied the reports of her doing an item number with Priyanka Chopra in Shootout At Wadala.

“I'm really sorry everyone but I won't be doing the item number that is mentioned in the news paper. LOL. I would love to work with PC, it would be the best day ever!! Ragini MMS 2 is the next movie I will be shooting,’ she wrote on Twitter.

Problem of plenty

First choice: Katrina Kaif Siddharth Anand has cast Hrithik Roshan in the remake of Knight and Day.

He is keen on casting Katrina Kaif as the female lead and she is also keen on doing the movie as she will have plenty of screen time with Hrithik Roshan.

The Knight and Day will be shot early next year.

While Katrina wants to do it but she has already agreed to do Gundey featuring Arjun Kapoor and Ranveer Singh.

Arjun Kapoor is her rakhi brother and he has personally asked her to do the movie.

She also gets along fabulously with Ali Abbas Zafar.

Tough act

Bold & Beautiful: Sana Khan Beautiful and talented Sana Khan, who made her debut with Kitani Mohabbat Hai Season 2 and grabbed limelight by playing the role of Lavanya in Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon, is enjoying her stint as the leading lady in Arjun on Star Plus. She talks about her role, the show and more.

Tell us about your role in Arjun?

Women are generally considered soft, which is why they are not given roles that involve fighting; but in Arjun I have to run, jump around and even wrestle with men.

Did you prepare for the role?

I was asked to watch videos of Angelina Jolie and Castle as the creative team wanted me to be something like her. I am pleased with my hot look in the show. Riya is always dressed in jeans and bright-coloured outfits. I also have to wear six inches heels during all my action scenes.

Will you return to Iss Pyaar..?

I am not sure if I will be doing it anymore. But, I have not been officially intimated on this. Having said this, I must share that I need time for myself as well. It would be impossible for me to handle two shows at a time.

Are you traditional in real life?

I am not a traditional woman and I am not a hardcore feminist either. I am just a sweet girl who likes to be pampered.

What kind of men do you like?

I love chivalrous men who open doors and pull chairs for women. Women should be treated like this.
