police station, while taking a bribe of Rs 25,000. CBI sleuths arrested SI
Kulwarnjeet Singh Cheema for allegedly taking a bribe of Rs 25,000 from a
resident of Mani Majra for "not framing him in a case of attempt to
murder". Cheema was arrested inside the Mani Majra police station.

Now, be ready to shell out more for school bus service
Chandigarh, September 25
Burning a hole in parents' pocket, school bus operators in the tricity today decided to hike the monthly bus service charges by Rs 50 from next month. The decision will affect more than 30,000 schoolchildren in the tricity, who travel by over 1,000 buses.
Yeh eve-teasing kya hota hai, asks cop manning women helpline
Chandigarh, September 25
"Kya? Yeh eve-teasing kya hota hai (what is eve-teasing)?" was the brusque reply of a baffled policewoman, manning the women helpline of the Chandigarh police, today when Chandigarh Tribune dialled the number to check the reaction time of the police on eve-teasing complaints.
It was after an effort that the policewoman could comprehend the complaint when the complainant spoke to her in Hindi. However, it was not of much help as the attendant responded curtly, “You contact the police station concerned. We don’t take such cases.”
All this happened despite the fact that the city was shaken by three sordid cases of eve-teasing in a row. Yesterday, an eve-teaser had robbed, abducted and thrashed a 20-year-old girl in Sector 34.
F&CC wants MC to take over Central
Club
Chandigarh, September 25
The sealing of the Central Club in Sector 9 by the UT Administration today rocked a meeting of the finance and contract committee (F&CC), chaired by Mayor Raj Bala Malik here. At the meeting, members raised the issue stating that since the land was initially allocated for a community centre, the municipal corporation should take over it. The community centres are managed by the corporation.
Youth crushed to death
Chandigarh, September 25
A 31-year-old man was killed after he was crushed by a Mahindra pickup van while reversing the vehicle at Ram Darbar here today.
The victim, Sonu, was sitting on a bicycle and was waiting for his friend, when a negligently driven van crushed him against the wall without noticing him. Sonu was rushed to the government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, where he was declared brought dead.

Councillors’ Honorarium may be hiked
Chandigarh, September 25
Eight years after their last pay revision, the Municipal Corporation is mooting a proposal for doubling the monthly honorarium of the Councillors, including the Mayor, Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor. The proposal will be tabled in the coming General House meeting scheduled on September 28. The development comes following a decision of the Punjab government for increasing the honorarium of all the Councillors in the corporation there.
Biometric attendance system at UT Estate Office
Chandigarh, September 25
Employees of the UT Estate Office will now be forced to think twice before they shirk work and stay away from office.
With biometric attendance system being installed at different branches of the Deputy Commissioner’s office, Estate Office and Land Acquisition Collector’s office, officers and staff will have to report for duty on time.
Suspected dengue death reported
Chandigarh, September 25
While a patient suspected to be suffering from dengue died at the PGI on September 21, the number of confirmed dengue cases reached 44 today. A case of swine flu was also reported in Hallo Majra.
Supply of muddy water: MC staff visit colony
Chandigarh, September 25
Residents of Charan Singh Colony made a complaint regarding the supply of muddy water to the team of Municipal Corporation officials who visited the colony today.
Residents alleged that during the monsoon it had become a routine practice that muddy water was supplied to them. Many times complaints had been made to the authorities but no action was taken to resolve this long-pending problem.

Nod to paid parking system in 3 sectors
Chandigarh, September 25
In a Finance and Contract Committee meeting chaired by Mayor Raj Bala Malik today it was decided that the civic body would introduce the paid parking system in Sectors 9, 22 and 43.
The committee also approved three fully automatic parking lots in the city, including two in Sector 17 near the Empire Store and Sahib Singh and one in Sector 35.

Two-wheeler hits traffic policeman
Chandigarh, September 25
A traffic policeman sustained injuries when he was hit by a scooty at a naka near Industrial Area and Sector 29 lights.
The injured constable, Rajender Kumar, was rushed to Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, where his condition is stated to be stable.

Humorous play marks end of Chandigarh theatre fest

The Chandigarh Theatre Festival concluded today with the play "Yaar Banaa Buddy" performed by Ekjute Theatre Group (Mumbai). The lighthearted play, directed by Nadira Zaheer Babbar, looked at four friends who found themselves at the crossroads in their life and relationships. Actor Yashpal Sharma's performance was the highlight of the play.
