Real shoppers in virtual world
Online shopping has become a major trend nowadays. Just with one click, the entire world opens up to you. We find out more...

There was a time when the entire family would dress up and walk around in a mall looking around for bargain offers. Cut to 2012, family does not dress up, does not walk around in a mall and still finds some worthy bargain offers. How? Everything has moved online and so have the discounts as well as bargains! As the trend grows, we find out more from the buyers and the sellers.

Another noteworthy point is that it is not only the cosmopolitan crowd in big metros that is attracting online shoppers, but our very own brigade from Chandigarh is growing bigger with each passing day. Recently, a trio fresh out of graduation, opened Digaaz.com. One punch and the very appealing models talk of a 40 per cent discount on Carlton products. Dixit Saini, co-founder, wraps it up in a simple sentence, “When we approach brands, we tend to buy in bulk.” The bulk orders tend to automatically bring down the prices.

Dixit Sahni, co-founder, Digaaz

The website is also promoting the in-house brands of the trio. “We know of the costs and don’t mind giving heavy discounts,” he says. For him, it is more about building a name in the market than ploughing back profits. “We started out on 3, 42,000 on Alexa ranking, Google rating; today we are 29,000,” he proudly says.

It’s not only garments, but also the cosmetics industry that is doing tremendous business online. Recently opened Browscart.com sells just about everything your skin can demand! Run by Ashok and Neelu Mehta, a couple, the website offers leading cosmetics brands on a discount of 20 per cent on a regular basis. The Daily Deals on the website offers an additional bargain on the discounted prices. “Our website works where the client knows what he is looking for,” Ashok says. Who would not want to buy a regular-use product on a cheaper price? Also covering bath-care products, the website will soon also have a phone offer; so with them around be ready to pick up the phone and order the kajal you just cannot step out without!

And how can we forget fashionandyou.com, the Mecca of online shopping. Abhishek Goel, the CEO of the website, comes with a rich experience from Yahoo.com and Amazon.com. Says Abhishek, “Offline retail is heading into trouble. It has a lot of overheads and not everything gets sold.” No wonder whatever hits fashionandyou.com is sold out in a span of few hours. The deal clincher for an established brand like them is buying old season stuff. “India, as a market, does not classify something that is two months old as last season,” he adds. The only drawback is how hard it is operationally. “Sometimes we have delayed orders, but nothing beats the reaction of a satisfied customer,” he smiles.

While there is set of youngsters who do not resort to online shopping due to size constraints and fearing dubious quality, there is another set who swears by anything online. Glory Khanna, a 22-year-old student of psychology, shops from forver21.com and kohls.com. “Since they are American websites, we can always be sure of quality standards,” she says. Not only this, the lady also goes for a pedicure as and when snapdeal.com offers one. “The bargains are great on e-bay as well,” she smiles.

Did we tell you that even Pernia Qureshi sells Ritu Kumar and Varun Bahl at some amazing prices?

success mantra
A trail worth following
Mona

Everything is possible only if one has the intention to achieve...is the motto that RK Garg, chairman, Asia Resorts Limited, has lived his life by. Having received awards such as Himachal Ratna and Udyog Ratan, Garg started with a small grocery shop in a hamlet Sarahan, district Sirmaur, Himachal Pradesh. Not seeing any future there, he moved on to timber trade and then to his dream — Timber Trail, which he built just by the dint of his hardwork and determination.

At 67, agile and enthusiastic, he not only intends to give a world-class character to his resort, but also explore fresh pastures. Being a nature-lover (while making Moksha, none of the tree was felled but each one preserved by constant modification in the designs), he sources plants from the best nurseries around the world. Here is what this man considers the pillars of success.

Work hard

On one of his visits abroad, he picked up a quote written on a grocery shop in Thailand, ‘We work 24 hours 366 days’. That’s been his routine. Monday to Sunday, he has taken no leave all these years. No sick leave either! Simple food (he is a vegetarian) and lifestyle has kept him well. Every morning waking up at five, browsing through papers, 40 minutes of yoga and he is at work by seven. And he is there till seven in the evening if not eight! Managing a property like Timber Trail, there are thousands of things to be looked after and this man likes to be in the know of them all.

Remain truthful

Being true to yourself and others is what Garg believes in. “If a payment is due and we are not able to deliver it, I say sorry and give another date. By god’s grace I have never extended that date,” says Garg. Truthfulness for him doesn’t end there. Being in the hospitality sector, he considers his duty to give the very best to his clients. So be it a trade show at Moscow, Berlin or London, he attends them regularly to gather the latest that is happening in the industry. His most recent is checking out Skylofts, MGM’s latest property in Vegas.

Family support

Garg found utmost support in his wife Swaran. “During the times of struggle, she has stood by me and never asked for anything in return,” he shares. “She is a vegetarian, but when needed she didn’t mind going to meat market to buy provisions for the resort. That’s been the extent to which she has supported me,” he adds. He is also extremely proud of his children; ‘all gold medallists’ as he points out. While son Akash mans the operations, daughter Naini heads marketing and like their other siblings Deepali and Ritu, have also have ventured out on their own.

Zeal counts

While on a trip to Dubai and Kuwait to sell timber in 1977, he backpacked to Europe looking for inspiration, which he duly found in the cable cars of Switzerland. Back with zeal to replicate that, he didn’t find favour with his family, but that didn’t deter him. He did live his dream and successfully. He is also hopeful that authorities are more supportive, as in the hills cable cars are the most economical and fastest mode of transport.

Be positive

There is no scope of negativity in Garg’s empire. No bickering is ever allowed and marching ahead is what he believes in. He had started with a nine-room property Timber Trail; Timber Trail Heights, Moksha Himalaya SPA Resort and the most recent The Deck have followed. To do something new, something constructive is what this entrepreneur aims at all the time. “Each night is introspection time. And each morning I am out to set right my mistakes.”

Viney Vadhera
Pure feeling: Viney Vadhera

Making a conscious and clear-cut departure from his well known panda series that mocked at religious hypocrisy, Viney Vadhera is currently occupied with romanticism. As his canvases speak in the new language of beauty and love, Vadhera puts in a disclaimer. This isn’t about eroticism. In man woman union he can sense the ultimate feeling of purity, of oneness with each other and hence with the supreme power. No wonder the paintings of his latest series are iridescent and luminous with a joy borne out of peace.

Birth of the idea

An artist, he says, is a sensitive being who responds to the world around him. After working on the duplicity of pandas of Haridwar, the trigger for which was sown by his brother’s death, he felt the need to create anew. Breaking free of the past, a new imagery unfolded itself. Like a torrent it has caught him in a spell.

Images ad infinitum

Though right now only one canvass in myriad hues of green is ready and another in blue is close to bearing fruit, he shares that like pages of book images are floating on his mind. Whether he will create ten paintings of the same kind or hundred he can’t say, right now he compares himself to a pregnant woman all set to deliver.

Modus operandi

Of course, beyond the mystical creative process lies the technique. His goes like this. He prepares the canvas in the colour that engages him at that point, uses more colours from the same family, crumples the canvas. Presto textures are created. Thereafter, forms are drawn. Rest he tells us is easy, just like putting surkhi bindi on a face.

Colour palette

The shift from sombre shades to effervescent colours he admits is indicative of one’s mindset at that particular point. On the reason behind choosing monochromatic compositions, he says, “We all work in the language we are most comfortable with.” Not to miss adept at. The manner in which he intermixes various shades of the same colour making each blend as well as stand apart is truly skilful.

Medium and the master

Its acrylics that he prefers for these dry easily and can be used whichever way and are ideal for both thick oil like and transparent water effect.

Beyond the canvas

Lies his proficiency for masks that he creates in paper mache. Only recently he produced a dazzling array of masks for St John School’s production, The Lion King.

Journey so far

Ever since he passed out of the Government College of Arts Chandigarh, he has been painting and has participated in prestigious workshops such as the one organised by SAARC at Shimla. He has participated in over 65 shows and won several awards. Working as a Senior Visualiser in the Educational Television Centre at National Institute of Technical Teachers’ Training and Research, art is both his muse and catharsis.

Commerce of art

He couldn’t care less about it. While his works sell for a reasonable sum, art market doesn’t beep on his radar. He neither creates for it nor will compromise for the dictates of demand.

Wardrobe malfunction!
Sabia Talwar

Morning: get ready; reach out to your wardrobe. Evening: get fresh; reach out to your wardrobe. Party time: want to look the best, reach out to your wardrobe. The ultimate destination is always one’s wardrobe. But does one find just the right thing to wear in one go? And is one’s wardrobe sorted enough to accommodate anything bought new?

Says Bhavneet Kaur Ahuja, a wardrobe stylist, from Chandigarh, “The very first thing one should get clear in the mind is that if one’s wardrobe is literally stuffed one needs to change it.” And the golden rule is to buy less but buy the best! “A wardrobe stylist is someone who revamps your wardrobe according to the budget. It is not simple though, as one needs to understand individual wardrobes,” adds Bhavneet.

Women love to shop even if there isn’t an inch of space for keeping the new stuff! Says Isha Mittal, who works in a software company in Chandigarh, “Although I am a complete hygiene freak, but when it comes to my wardrobe I don’t really keep it that arranged. I make it a point to assemble my clothes whenever they come after laundry and dedicate sometime on weekends to actually dig into my wardrobe.” One can dispose of whatever is of little or no use, but shopping must go on! “I can’t even think of disposing some of my very expensive outfits even if I don’t wear them. Trust me, even if there is no space in my wardrobe I still shop till I drop,” adds Isha. We wonder whether a person’s personality is related to the activity of wardrobe clearance. Says Dr Roopali Virk, “Actually it is true that if one is an organised personality, he or she will tend to keep the wardrobe in order; those who have stuffed wardrobes have bought items under peer pressure or other compulsions.”

A friendly suggestion is that one should not be obsessed with just filling up the wardrobe. “One can work towards becoming a balanced personality by clearing off the waste and giving it off in charity,” adds Dr Roopali. What about our men-folk? Says Vidur Varma, a law student form Panjab University, “I love to shop although guys are not very crazy about shopping. But cleaning up the wardrobe is only when I have to donate clothes or there is no room to place them.”

Next time your wardrobe calls, please attend!

pet passion
Feline charm
Manpriya Singh

The cuddly ball of furs comes with terms and conditions, catwalks with a certain arrogance and be ready to be brushed aside or snubbed aside. That’s cats as pets for you. Even the legendary tomcat from the Tom & Jerry has a tough time with all the female cats. Tom either sings or woos them in a French-accented voice. “With dogs, you show them a little love, or give them something to eat and they are all yours, while it takes a lot of time to woo cats,” shares Rahat Mall, a psychology student at DAV-10, of her experience from the two feline creatures that she pets, called Patchy and Pooky. “Both the names just came about spontaneously. They were both born to Smokey and looked very similar, so much so, it was difficult to make out who was who. Later on, one developed fine patches and that’s when we named her Patchy while the other one Pooky.” And that’s the story of two sisters.

Love me, love my cat!

Winston Churchill got the nerves of the species right when he said, “Dogs look up to you, while cats look down upon you.” She shares, “They are cold creatures for sure, but they are also very neat. You generally wouldn’t see a cat messing around,” she says of the catwalk show at her door-step literally. “We don’t let them into the house and they have a territory of their own. But whenever you open the door, they come running,” she speaks of the five-month-old kittens that are a powerhouse of energy. “It’s like they are on Redbull 24/7.” Yours faithfully

Sean Connery, Morgan Freeman, Paris Hilton, Nicole Richie, Nicolas Cage, Giorgio Armani, Katy Perry, Christina Ricci, Carmen Electra, Penelope Cruz, Kurt Cobain, Cameron Diaz, Bill Clinton, John Travolta, Mark Twain, Audrey Hepburn, Earnest Hemingway…. never mind the celebrities from a broad spectrum who loved their furry companions. The sight of a cat is still a rare one. She laughs, “Whenever anybody comes to know, they are surprised and launch into a flurry of questions.” She adds, “That’s not it. We have a nursing home and whenever kids are crying, their mothers try to quiet them by pointing towards the cats in our house.” You own a dog, while you just keep a cat. She adds, “They stay out of their own free will, never submit to anybody.”

Doc Talk
For that killer smile
Dr Charit Vohra

Hollywood star Julia Roberts recently made headlines when she said that since childhood she has been brushing her teeth with baking soda–a habit she picked up from her grandfather. Roberts certainly has a killer smile, and her claim would make many wonder whether they should head for the kitchen cabinet for sparkling whites. However, the home remedies or village traditions may not really be the right solution for a bright, white smile. Here are some common mistakes people make.

Myths & facts

Some people believe that lemon juice is the right thing to get sparkling teeth. This notion is wrong. Lemon juice is citric acid, which can be highly harmful for teeth.

The acidic content can make the teeth lose calcium, which makes them strong and also gives them some of their off-white colour. Once teeth lose calcium, the loss is irreplaceable. If you put lemon juice directly on the teeth, the damage will begin right away.

The acid of the lemon juice has been known to actually dissolve bones. Dentists often find cases of tooth destruction among people, which they have caused themselves by sucking on lemons.

Some people decide to combine what they think are the two best home remedies for sparkling teeth – lemon juice and baking soda. Baking soda is advocated by some people in the belief that it will bleach the teeth. The combination can be harmful. While lemon juice will erode calcium from the teeth, the baking soda will erode tooth enamel, which can cause permanent damage to your teeth.

It is also assumed that baking soda removes plaque from teeth, as it is abrasive.  Using baking soda for the purpose will do more harm than good. In an effort to remove plaque, you may damage the precious tooth enamel, and make your teeth acutely sensitive to hot and cold.

A better option for keeping away plaque is regular brushing with a good toothpaste. This will remove stains as effectively as baking soda and will keep the tooth enamel protected too.

‘Kya aapke toothpaste mein namak hai?’ goes the advertisement of a popular brand of toothpaste. This does not indicate, though, that you should dip your toothbrush in salt and get the maximum benefit at no cost.

Salt is abrasive, and can damage tooth enamel. One of the kitchen remedies evidently aimed at deriving double benefit is using salt with vinegar to brush teeth. This is double whammy. The use of an abrasive material along with vinegar, which is acid-based, may make it seem that the teeth look whiter. But    what you will actually land up with are not whiter but damaged teeth, caused by erosion of tooth enamel, and heightened sensitivity to hot or cold food products and beverages. Brush your teeth in the morning and at bedtime, and you have got the right regimen in place for a set of beautiful whites.

Gender divide
Parvesh Rana

I am a 34-year-old married man. I have moved to an all-woman team recently. I feel awkward interacting with them. Do you think I need to be measured in my interactions?

— Dheeraj, Chandigarh

Many people probably face the same situation that you are facing. Don’t look at it as some big deal, you should keep a professional approach. There is nothing to be scared of or feel strange. However, don’t fool around or go overboard to impress the team.

I am an 18-year-old boy. I have recently moved with my sister and her in-laws in Mohali. I don’t feel comfortable. I wanted to invite my friends over for a small party; do you think I should ask my sister?

— Simran, Mohali

I think you should consult your sister whether she and her in-laws would be comfortable with the idea. Don’t push them if they are not okay with it. After all you are staying with them. If you have enough dough you can arrange a get together outside as well.

Actor Jackie Shroff talks about his upcoming venture Cover Story & how playing a journalist came easy to him
Jasmine Singh

A still from the movie Cover Story
A still from the movie Cover Story

This is a case of role reversal and for once, it isn’t an easy one. Frantic calls to fix up an interview, long wait outside the vanity van, tracking, tracing, re-checking the Dictaphone…actor Jackie Shroff gets a real taste of a journalist’s life in his upcoming movie Cover Story. An adaptation of Dutch filmmaker Theo Van Gogh’s film, The Interview, the film also stars Anjum Nayar.

Being chased by journalists all his life, it’s the other way round for Jackie now. “It is the most interesting character that I have ever played. This is an unusual story that revolves around only two characters,” says Jackie. Trying to interview a film-star, Jackie didn’t have to struggle too hard for the role. “Throughout my life I have seen and been interviewed by all kinds of journalists, the questions they ask and how they plan to get a story. It was real fun playing the character. It was nice to be on the other side of the firing line,” he adds.

For Jackie, who has been a part of all romantic movies, sitting on the other side of the chair for an interview must be different. He laughs, “Yes I know how to avoid uncomfortable questions. Just be your own self and that’s about it.” Jackie, who is being seen on silver screen after a long time, doesn’t have television appearances on his mind yet. “I keep getting offers and many actors are engaged on TV, but I would want to keep doing some meaningful films,” says Jackie Shroff.

His bindaas self, ‘take-life-as-it-comes’ attitude, Jackie doesn’t believe in giving sermons, not even to his son Tiger Shroff. “I want him to go through the process of learning like I did. I am a journalist’s son who went to make his own place in the industry. I want Tiger to see and choose for himself. I am always there for him and he is well-turned-out kid, who is open to learning,” adds the actor, whose next project with Rajnikant Kochadaaiyan is something that is keeping him busy. “I am playing the main villain in the movie; there are a lot of stunts and it is going to be fun.”

Live life, Kareena size!

Kareena Kapoor is the czarina of Bollywood and with the release of Heroine; she will reclaim her status as the reigning queen of Bollywood. Here are some things we have learnt from her.

Flaunt Your Man

She talks about her relationship and makes no bones about being seen with her partner. She also takes time out for her relationship. She is getting married in a month and we are so happy for her!

Be size zero

Kareena had gained weight yet she looked sexy and pulled off Yeh Mera Dil. Then she lost weight and sparked a nationwide trend of weight loss (the healthy way) and launched two books on the subject. She changes her look and weight depending on her movies. Her size zero days are far behind her now.

Everyone on the set, paired up with Vandana. Everyone kept saying that he should think of her since she is his heroine for now and forget about Sargun. The gossip spread like fire and Sargun got to know about it. Joining everyone, she also took Ravi’s case, pretending to be upset. Playing the perfect host

Filmmaker Karan Johar is looking forward to a back to back judging sessions. As soon as Jhalak Dikhlaa Jaa ends, he will be seen as judge of India’s Got Talent. Here he talks about the show and more.

Why did you choose India’s Got Talent?

India’s Got Talent is the only show that does not limit itself to singing-dancing; it rather extends the stage to a variety of talent and is a launch pad for newcomers. At Dharma Productions too, we have given a break to various artists, directors, actors and been part of their success story, which is a huge high. I am looking forward to many life changing experiences like these on India’s Got Talent.

How different is it to judge celebs and laymen in India’s Got Talent?

While on Jhalak you have to sugarcoat your comments for the celebrities on the show. I wouldn’t like it if someone said to me--your film wasn’t good, go home. So is the case with the Jhalak celebs. While on India’s Got Talent you can be straightforward and even blunt with weirdoes, yet I believe in supporting the ones who have talent.

Your chemistry with Manish Paul is being appreciated in Jhalak?

I love Manish. I am a big fan. He’s superb, talented, his impromptu sense of humour is brilliant.  I wish him all the best.

In Jhalak it seems Madhuri has taken the charge of the show while normally you are the head of shows you feature in?

Madhuri (Dixit) is beyond a movie star. She’s a legend and my senior –we all have respect and regard for her, she is an amazing talent. How can I be in charge of a show which also has her? In India’s Got Talent Kiron Kher is in charge as she has been with the show since the beginning and she’s outstanding. She’s the face of India’s Got Talent.

What prompted you to cast newcomers in Student Of The Year?
