NHAI: No additional fee being charged for smart card
Chandigarh, September 18
The toll plaza at Chandimandir on the Chandigarh-Shimla highway. A Tribune photograph The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and Himalayan Expressway, in their reply submitted before the Panchkula consumer forum, have stated that "no additional fee is being charged for the RFID (radio frequency identification device), a smart card”.

PUCSC president's poll expenditure: ~3,700 only! 
Chandigarh, September 18
Despite the extravagant campaigning, winning candidates have claimed that the entire exercise was well within the prescribed budget. The figures of the expenditure incurred by the winning candidates during the elections will surprise everyone. Panjab University Campus Student Council (PUCSC) president won the elections by spending Rs 3,700 only. The details of the expenditure have been submitted to the PU by the newly elected president.

In fact, the authorities are also the least bothered about the trouble which the commuters are facing due to mismanagement in these parking lots.

Pawan Kumar Bansal States to benefit from 51% FDI in retail, says MP

The Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Pawan Kumar Bansal, while defending the decision of the Centre to allow 51 per cent FDI in multi-brand retail, said the BJP was spreading disinformation about it.

After some sporadic symptoms, she was diagnosed with advanced kidney cancer. At Fortis Hospital here, she not only recovered, but also became one of the oldest women in the country to have undergone such an extensive surgical procedure involving the abdomen and heart.

Punjab to recruit 600 docs

All community health centres in Punjab will be developed as nodal kendras and 600 more doctors will be recruited soon in the state. This was stated by Health and Family Welfare Minister Madan Mohan Mittal after laying the foundation stone of a Rs 40 lakh primary health centre in Khizrabad village, near Kurali today.

3 trains cancelled due to landslides
Kalka, September18
Three trains from Shimla to Kalka were cancelled due to landslides today. The official of the kalka Railway Station confirmed that due to the landslides in Kaithali Ghat and Tara Devi Railway stations , the department of railway had to cancel three trains today. The Himalayan Queen train arrived at the kalka Railway station three hours late while the rest of the trains were cancelled.

Reserve plots for oustees, HC tells housing board

In a significant judgment, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has directed the Chandigarh Housing Board (CHB) to reserve a "suitable percentage" of plots/dwelling units for oustees with pending claims in housing schemes as and when framed by it.

Ex-warders depose in jailbreak case
Chandigarh, September 18
Two witnesses deposed in a court in the infamous Burail jailbreak case that had rocked the UT Prisons Department in 2004. The assassins of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh, Jagtar Singh Hawara and Paramjit Singh Bheora were produced in the court for the recording of evidence in the case.

HC orders CBI probe into grant of bail to accused

Less than a fortnight after a controversy surfaced following the grant of bail to Praveen Kumar, an accused in a drug-trafficking case in Panchkula, the Punjab and Haryana High Court today directed a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Class VIII student raped; uncle booked

A 14-year-old schoolgirl was allegedly raped by her uncle here today. The police has booked 35-year-old Sanjay Kumar on a charge of rape. The accused is at large.

Thief escapes
Chandigarh, September 18
A cycle thief escaped right under the nose of the police today. Manish, a resident of Daria, was arrested two days ago for his involvement in cycle thefts. He was again produced in a court today which sent him to judicial custody for 14 days in the Burail jail. 

Swindler was cheated by foreigner

Talwinder Singh, alias Dimple, alias Hitesh Kumar, who had robbed lakhs of rupees from at least 20 persons across the country, was himself cheated by a foreigner girl last year. 

24-yr-old commits suicide

A 24-year-old man committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan at his residence in Sector 39 here today.

The local police today registered a case against 4 for murdering physically-challenged Karamvir for property. The deceased Karamvir, a resident of Balongi, had died mysteriously three months before and his viscera report had indicated death due to poisoning.
