Where fashion is passion
Signature style Beginning with the latest development, the entry is open for FDI in India and instead of getting paranoid about the competition, Raghavendra Rathore is happy for the opportunities it will bring along. "FDI for the fashion industry translates into more fashion labels, more fashion stores and streets in India, which will generate more awareness as well as opportunities." But that's how Raghavendra has always been — unfazed and unaffected by the competition or what his contemporaries are up to. He is still based in Jodhpur, doesn't mark his presence ever at any of the Page 3 dos and gives a miss to fashion shows, irrespective of their scale. "I work the way the corporate sector works. Even if I am based in Jodhpur, I still have to meet as many as 500 people per week; I fail to understand how designers in Delhi or Mumbai manage their rush of clients. And fashion shows don't seem logical to me, for whatever you spend, you get returns after six weeks," says the designer who will be presenting his Club J aka Club Jodhpur collection and some pieces from Blue Mantra at the tour. Club J comprises a lot of experiments that he has done with denims. Plus, unlike the parent label, RR (Raghavendra Rathore), it is reasonably priced, ranging from Rs 2,000 to 15,000. "There are also some bandhgalas and Jodhpuri breeches; the silhouettes though will be very different from what people have already seen in RR." Besides promoting Club J and finalising sites for new stores in five different cities, he was busy designing for Akshay Kumar in Oh My God. This is Raghavendra's only Bollywood association in all these years, once again a proof of his being impervious to popular trends. As for how he got his first break, Raghavendra is happy to share the story and recalls how it happened in 1994. "I was asked by the Maharaja of Jodhpur to design a fashion show to celebrate 50 years of Umed Bhawan Palace." And the story continues… Glittering stuff The collection that Pankaj and Nidhi, a designer couple, brings to the tour is aptly titled Liquid Old Tree. Done entirely in golden colour and golden thread (that's where the experiment with anything to do with gold ends, not to forget the metal's soaring price), the patterns are in the form of leaves, branches and trunk of a tree. "This collection was like a playground for us, we had the liberty to experiment," says Pankaj, who also reveals that he belongs to Chandigarh. Back from the finale show at Lakme Fashion Week, where their collection was well-appreciated, they say that was a high-pressure job. Their collections are priced as per the prêt segment, but the presentation is very couture. "It is still not pure couture, for not everything that the word denotes can be handmade." It's their loyalty towards the technique of latticework that has got them rave reviews from critics and won them various awards. "That's an advantage of being a young Indian designer today. If the work is good, appreciation comes from various quarters." No wonder, Rohit Bal, as Pankaj and Nidhi quote, recently said, "Wish I was a young Indian fashion designer as well." ashima@tribunemail.com Manpriya Singh Dark desires For a designer, she's come a full circle with the compliments and the criticism that her label carries, the reach and the recognition that she's garnered by dressing larger than life characters on Indian cinema. Neeta Lulla can afford to be conceited and opinionated in the same breath. "I'm not really brand conscious, because if I were, I'd say that I only wear Neeta Lulla," she laughs, recognises the substance that her name carries in the fashion circles and still hankers for the very little that she's not done so far. "I would have loved to dress up Marilyn Monroe and Madhu Bala. There is something about their svelte figure and persona that is everything sensual but still doesn't have the blatant sexiness." Other than the five songs that she's just finished for Rani Mukerji's Aiyya, there's the current fashion tour where she touches the baroque and dwells on "The Dark Side", of a woman. There's nothing much that remains untouched yet. "It is predominantly in black. There's a cocktail and evening wear with a lot of zardosi and dabka work." She adds, "The concept came about two months back while I started working only three weeks ago. There is a lot of structuring and detailing that has been done." Street smart It's easier when a designer wears their creativity and quirkiness on their sleeves. The eccentric designs, the eclectic colours, the pop art, the street look-Nida Mahmood walks in with her designs intact. "I enjoy wearing what I design and vice versa. My designs are my objectivity about what I would like to wear and what I feel people would like to wear." That's where her creativity and her collection called Bombay Bun Maska lie. "It's an ode to the youth of today, who are more vocal about everything. The name and the collection stands for everything without pretensions and how one can be individualistic and still stand out. Down the line
We found something interesting, something like a revelation — the work of a line-producer in movies is nothing short of a CBI agent! While you take time to chew this one, Gaurav Sharma Gabbar, the man behind the The Theatre Army (a production house of essentially theatre people) and the line-producer for many Bollywood, Hollywood and Punjabi movies explains to us the uncanny comparison.
"A line-producer is in charge of many things like hunting for the right kind of locations that would match up to the expectations of the director and the scene, arranging local artists and the crowd. The most challenging part is when we have to scout for a bungalow; most of the times the owners have either moved abroad or stay elsewhere. So, trying to figure out the owners; where they stay, trying to get in touch with them and striking a deal with them are a tough ask," says Gabbar, un-interrupted and un-hindered. Having worked in projects West is West, Teen Thay Bhai, Qissa, Surkhaab, Mausam, Pinkey Mogey Wali, Sarsa, et al, Gabbar feels that Bollywood coming to Punjab has not only generated work for local artists, but it has also opened venues for other creative jobs. "I am a pass-out from the Theatre Department in Chandigarh; almost eight students out of 10 have moved to Mumbai for work. With Bollywood coming here and good Punjabi movies being made, local people who had wanted to work in movies have something to look forward to." Gaurav owes a lot to theatre, so he went to organise students from theatre to create The Theatre Army. "Look at actors like Naseeruddin Shah and Nawazuddin — all have a theatre background. Now, they are a name in Bollywood. I wanted to do the same, so we created this production house." Film-making is the highest creative job, which means everyone involved in film-making is important. "It goes without saying that a director, script-writer or actors contribution to a film is much more. This does not mean production work is any less," adds Gaurav, who is doing a new singing relaity show on Zee Punjabi Dhadkan Mere Panjab Di.

A comic tale
It is time to move on from the regular dal chawal to chilly chicken, butter chicken or anything spicy. For Shreyas Talpade, some addition on the plate can definitely bring about some change. As of now, he savours the masala mix of Priyadarshan's movie Kamaal Dhamaal Malamaal (KDM), which brings him to Chandigarh along with the beautiful co-star Madhurima.
Shreyas is unpredictably candid; no shortcuts in conversation and it work as well. "I can't wear a mask all the time. I do things that I feel right about, which comes across as candid," says Shreyas looking every bit the Punjab da puttar is his beard. By the way, this comes from back-to-back promotional tours. So, it is KDM time? "Oh yes, this is a Priyadarshan film that means fun unlimited. This isn't just comedy, it is has suspense, action and emotions," adds Shreyas, the actor who finds place in one comedy or the other. "I am indeed comfortable with comedy; also 95 per cent of films are being in this genre. We don't have an Iqbaal or Dor being made every second day, but with Priyadarshan's film it is a comedy where I got to witness a graph in acting. A few moments reminded me of Iqbaal while shooting for KDM." Comedy rules the roost here, but for Shreyas he can sometimes laugh just for a few good friends. "I did Housefull 2 purely for Sajid Khan. I have known him for many years and Farah Khan is like an elder sister. I don't get emotional about films, I just do my work and that's it." Friendships in Bollywood…are we serious here! "Okay, there are some but essentially there aren't many so it is a waste to risk your career for a superficial thing," says Shreyas, who believes that the hit-and-trial method has taught him a lot. "Now, it's time to make new mistakes," he laughs unmindfully. It is time to turn the radar on the pretty Madhurima. We know her as a South-Indian actress, but as for her she always wanted to work in Bollywood. "South-Indian movies happened; somehow I ended up doing some substantial roles. Working in a Priyadarshan's movie is a different high all together," she doesn't let the soft smile leave her face for a minute. What makes us roll in laughter is when she shares that in South Indian movies mostly actors go for movie promotion events! "It is something new for me, back-to-back events," says Madhurima, talking about her stint in Bollywood and a Priyadarshan movie. "I couldn't believe that I was working with actors like Paresh Rawal and Om Puri. We had fun moments during the shoot. Unlike Down South where actors only work strictly by the clock, we had a lot of fun while shooting," she says excitedly. Laughter comes naturally? "I am like this in real life as well, always laughing. But for KDM, I was asked to be natural so that comedy could flow easy." It's time to strike a pose and the two actors are a pro at this! jasmine@tribunemail.com

On a purse string
Jigyasa Kapoor Chimra Handbags have always been a woman’s proud possession. Just like apparels, they change with every season. And with the beginning of the autumn/winter season, new collections have hit the market, what we see are bags of different shapes, sizes and of course bright colours, going against the norm that bags in fall and winter should be darker and simpler. “Diplomats and briefcases are among the new models of this autumn/winter collection. Though the sizes vary, but it is the perfect choice for a working woman. Other than that we have the rectangular bags and clutches for the fashion conscious,” says an employee from Benetton at Paras Down Town Square. “Miniature purses and wristlets are also to be seen in this season,” he adds. Geometric volume is also in vogue aAnd we see plenty of designs in cylindrical shape. Fur is another material that you see on bags this season and that can vary from a complete bag to a small inset, edge or handles made in fur (though they are not a very practical choice). “Big bags have been quite popular and they continue rising on the popularity chart,” says Sanjay, manager, Shoe Tree in Sector 17. “Other than this, we have the shoulder bags which are becoming quite popular. The only change is they have become smaller and have a well-defined geometric shape. Slings like chains are also getting attention, so is suede leather in varied colours,” he adds. Talking of styles, animalistic prints are also popular along with patterns and bright embroidery. Colour is a priority, so brighter, the better. The most fashionable colours of bags are black, electric blue, brown, brick red and purple. The Westside in Industrial Area has some great designs in bags. From tiny bags to chic leather ones there are envelopes, briefcase bags, clutches that you can choose from.

Priyanka on a song
Priyanka Chopra launched her brand new international single, In My City, at a suburban five-star recently. It was an incredible event and celebration attended by Priyanka's near and dear ones and the media. The actress even mingled with the media and asked them their opinion on the single. We will not be surprised if she signs her first Hollywood film sometime next year. It will be a big film (not the types Mallika Sherawat goes on about!) because Priyanka is already working with the creme de la creme of the international music scene and Creative Artists Agency is representing her. CAA handles the who's who of the entertainment world from Heidi Klum to the Beckhams to Tom Cruise to Shakira. Priyanka Chopra is their first Indian actress client. We definitely see her doing live concerts and people going crazy about her music because her voice is international and she has that sultry Latina vibe! Her journey from Miss World to Bollywood's most versatile actress to an international singer has been amazing. Her new single is called In MY City and features Will.I.Am. The album will release next year. We can tell you that PC sounds as international as can be. Her achievements are inspiring! PC talks about her new career. Anxious girl I am so nervous right now. I feel like my debut film just released. I went backstage and saw everyone's reactions to the single. This feels surreal because I have been travelling a lot the last two weeks and I am going to LA next week. Barfi! is also releasing. I am so grateful for all the support from my team, my family, everyone at Universal who believed in me and all the people who are here today for me and who made this happen. They believed in me even when I did not believe in myself. I have become a professional singer. My father is the happiest person in the world because this was his dream for me. Training time I remember I sang a few lines for the song Alisha from Pyaar Impossible and Salim Merchant made note of that. Then I was shooting 7 Khoon Maaf in Coorg and Devraj Sanyal and Anjula Acharia-Bath came to meet me. I wanted to focus on my serious film but my manager Natasha told me to meet them. So I met them when I came back to Mumbai. Then before I knew it, my contract was signed and I flew to Los Angeles to record the album. I have worked with the best of the music industry from Troy to Red to Will.I.Am. I feel so privileged and blessed that all this has happened. I had singing trainers who helped me in America and also on my film sets in India. They knew I could sing professionally and told me so. So I have recorded the album. I grew up listening to a lot of music from from Mohammed Rafi to The Beatles to Metallica and recently 50 Cent. Music has been a big part of my life. Desi girl The album is in English because we have to reach out to the world. The album will have an Indian touch to it because I am the ultimate desi girl. Even the first video will have some touches of Bollywood. I really do not know where this journey will take me and I will have to learn on the way. I have written or co-written most of the songs. I have made sure that the instrumentation in the songs is a little Indian. I am also so honoured that this song is the first song by an Indian artist to play at the Thursday Night Football on NFL! That is the American premiere of the song! It is such a big step for us Indians towards global recognition. On stage I know live shows and live singing performances will be a part of the promotional activities for this album when it is out next year. This will be planned by the end of the month. I love the stage and I love dancing. So I will have to start singing live too even though I am nervous about doing that right now. I cannot sing now because I have lost my voice giving interviews for Barfi! and sleeping very little. Lending her voice I would like to lend my voice to Rekha. I recently met Asha Tai (Asha Bhonsle) and it is amazing that she is doing a film now, at the age of 80. She said I should give her acting tips and she will give me singing tips. I would like to sing for myself and I would not mind singing for other actresses or getting them to dance to my voice, either! (Laughs!) I am glad that the song is already trending on Twitter and my fans have been intensely supportive and encouraging! |

Raising the bar
Katrina Kaif will undertake training for a unique dance form called acro-dancing for Dhoom 3. Acro-dancing is described as a combination of classical dance with mid-air acrobatics. “Katrina will start with learning acrobatics and gymnastics suspended from a harness. This form of training for acro-dancing is really hard because it hones in on a dancer's ability to maintain grace suspended in air,” informed a source.
"After this, Katrina will go on to training for classical dancing, and then do a combination of the two styles. It's a huge challenge. But as far as her dancing is concerned Katrina wants to keep moving to a new level with every film," the source added. Kaif, who is famed for her dance numbers such as Sheila Ki Jawani and Chikni Chameli, and learnt to belly-dance for Ek Tha Tiger's Mashallah, is reportedly keen to bring something new to the third film in the Dhoom franchise. The 27-year-old actress, who has already trained in several forms of combat for her role in Dhoom 3, will apparently spend two months training with a world-renowned acrobat. Kaif's co-star Aamir Khan will also reportedly be required to try his hand at acro-dancing for a sequence in the film.

Old guns re-unite on screen
Life has come a full circle for Vinod Khanna and Randhir Kapoor. Thirty eight years after Prakash Mehra's Haath Ki Safaai, they're coming together again in Prabhu Dheva's Hindi remake of his Tamil hit Nuvvostanante Nenoddantana. The veterans had played long-lost brothers in Haath Ki Safaai.
Strangely they were never cast together again. It was believed that the two did not have an easy time shooting together for Haath Ki Safaai. "Since I am launching Kumar Taurani's son in my film, I wanted a strong supporting cast. Randhir Kapoor and Vinod Khanna were my natural choices for two very important roles in the film," said Prabhu
Deva.

In the book, Grey has a room full of whips, handcuffs and masks for use on submissive women. — IANS

Singer Niall Horan says he is baffled by ongoing speculation over his love life as he has no "time" for a girlfriend. Horan prefers to relax with his friends when he is not working and admits he's too lazy to go looking for love. "I try to go and see my friends but that's easier to do than go out with a girlfriend. Age no bar
At 42, Anchint Kaur can give any young girl a run for her money. Her good looks, acting talent and great physique have worked brilliantly for her as she has given us superb performances in shows like Banegi Apni Baat, Swabhimaan to her last TV appearance in Jhansi Ki Rani. Here she talks about her fitness regimen.
How tough or easy is it to maintain a good body and looks? I don’t know about looks but the physicality part is like maintenance that you do all the time. It is constant like eating food daily. It’s like servicing your car. One should mend the body only when something goes wrong. Being a celeb do you stay slim for yourself or your image? I have always done it for myself. I did it since I was a teenager. As a kid I used to be physically active and then in my teens I continued with workouts. Exercise has always been a part of me. I didn’t start taking care of health because I got into acting. With working non-stop, it must be tough to workout daily. Yes. But I was aware of the fact that I can’t give it up. It is difficult when you are working 30 days a month and yet have to follow a regime. You have to prioritise. With age is it harder to maintain yourself? When you are working daily, yes. But when free you can still space it out. I also follow a specific diet which helps me when I am doing TV. Standing before the lights all day absorbs moisture from your skin. It goes for a toss. Makeup helps you protect your skin but it also blocks your pores. I believe in looking your age not older than that. I have worked on that. If I am 40, I don’t want to look 59. What regime do you follow? I focus on my diet and don’t believe in giving up any particular food. Once in a while, I don’t eat dessert too. I enjoy my five small meals per day. I do my work-outs in the week ranging from weights, circuit training, cardio to cycling.

Now, welcome hasya kavitas on small screen Poetry represents an esoteric expression of literature that tends towards the romantic, passionate and often melancholic reflections on life. But when this rare art form is used for humour, it inspires not just laughter, but awestruck laughter. Simply because this is not mere humour; it is humour as an intricate art form. The genre of hasya-kavita, increasingly rare with passing generations now finds a grand revival on SAB TV with Waah Waah Kyaa Baat

Such a fantastic birthday day today! Spend more time at home and recharges your batteries. Do something that brings your focus back to the domestic realm. This is a good year for you to implement your new plans or schemes. Some of you are likely to purchase a piece of land to construct your own office. Others might start construction work on the land that has been acquired earlier. Romance is all around you, and with good reason. You've been going from success to success, developing your creative talent and establishing financial stability. Now, your hard work will pay-off. If you're already in a relationship, take an overseas trip with your partner. Head for a country known for its beautiful natural vistas. Greenery has a therapeutic effect on you, and prompts you to let down your tensions. The stars will support you in finalising deals started some time ago as well as new deals. Play your cards right. Great turbulence is hidden beneath the peaceful exterior. The bristling energy that you feel is not just an atmospheric disturbance. Family issues and demands take the centre-stage with low cooperation, high spending and some health issues causing minor set backs. A great deal of effort appears to go into a discussion and a project. Improvement is swift. Focus firmly on the financial gains. You might be inclined to turn towards investments or monetary transactions like dealings in share, commodities etc. You will make new friends, especially near December. There will be a certain amount of mental stress due to anxieties regarding future. This will be a physically demanding year which may require your survival instinct to come into action. Strong emotions can drive you to take risks. It can feel liberating and will make you bold in the pursuit of romance. You may be in a hurry, but an indecisive individual will appreciate you more if you can give him or her more time to think. Mood: Frustrated when encountering 'poor cooperation'.
