Divine notes
Unlike other classical artists, eminent flautist Pandit Ranendranath Majumdar, better known as Ronu Majumdar, doesn't curl up his nose with condescension at the mention of film music. Instead, he rates the music of several film music directors highly. Shantanu Moitra, AR Rahman and Shankar Ehsan Loy anyway figure in his "my favourites list."
No wonder he, whose 'baansuri' has embellished many a film compositions, rues the fact that Bollywood solo music has yet not fallen on his plate. But why should a musician who has traversed many realms, whose flute concerts hold listeners in a thrall and who has even given music for a Hollywood film be perturbed over Bollywood music not coming his way? Without taking offence he answers, "For, I am a composer also and my creative instincts demand that I should express myself in different ways." It's precisely why he has collaborated with Banjo virtuoso Bela Fleck. His rationale is simple, "There are certain areas that you can't reach without such collaborations." While coming together with Fleck won him a Grammy nomination it also opened the doors for the film "Primary Colours" in which he has composed and performed. On his Hollywood experience he is a trifle circumspect and says, "See unlike our culture where dukh ho to gaana sukh ho to gaana their ethos are different and at best one can compose a background score." Of course, he agrees sound is all important. For after all swar is brahm and the swar coming out of Lord Krishna's divine instrument can only take one to a different realm. He says, "Indeed, when I play flute I can envision Lord Krishna and I know for sure that the flute has come from another world." But in this world he is determined to strengthen its place, moreso on the classical map where it often doesn't get its due. Working towards its greater recognition has been the cause celebre of his long journey. Struggle, by the way, is a word that Majumdar doesn't like. "Each step in one's life is a lesson," he avers. Sure there have been days when he slept in temples and in gurdwaras but he reasons, "If it all came easy, my music would have been devoid of dard and soz." Personally for him the music that he has imbibed from his father Dr Bhanu Majumdar and later his gurus Pandit Lakshman Prasad Jaipurwale and Pandit Vijay Raghav, is an emblem of peace. The Maihar gharana known for purity of ragas and laykari that he represents for him is his pehchaan "my identity, but just as one learns from parents and also from others there are other influences too, especially of Jaipur gharana." He has been hugely impacted by religious discourses as well and not just of his own religion. Guru Granth Sahib, which he has studied extensively, has shaped much of his thinking as he talks reverently about Sikh gurus and their profound teachings. Incidentally, Punjabi isn't the only language outside his mother tongue Bengali that he has mastered. Proficient in nine languages, his music may know no barriers but he remains in eternal quest of making his flute communicate in many languages of tranquillity and melody.

Hit formula Bollywood producer Mahedra Dhariwal's life story is no different from a film script. A businessman in Jodhpur, this actor aspirant showed up on the sets of a Rajasthani movie. Role he didn't get, but what he got was the chance to invest money in the movie, which he duly did. When the producer didn't return the money, he followed him to Mumbai. The movie was a hit, andhe stayed back to play the new role — that of a movie producer. A decade-and-a-half and now Mumbai is his home. "I have done close to 25 movies," shares this producer, in Chandigarh recently. His recent project Bhaiyyaji Superhit is half way through. With Sunny Deol is in a double role, Ameesha Patel plays the leading lady in this film. "It is a total commercial masala flick with Sunny in a double role. He plays a don and an aspiring actor. It's high on both comedy and action," says Mahendra. Bollywood has grown bigger ever since he stepped into the industry. The budgets are huge and so are the returns. Mahendra places the credit with the multiplex phenomenon, "Today the audience wants to see the movie in the multiplex howsoever costly it is. With huge money flow, today our movies compare with Hollywood budgets." Mahendra has already zeroed in on his next project. It's going to be with a movie inspired by Bhanwari Devi. "Hers is a story of rise and fall. This woman's meteoric ambition became the cause of her downfall," says the director who is aiming at Bipasha Basu to play the lead. mona@tribunemail.com |

Actor Zac Efron is a theatre enthusiast and has now set his sights on Broadway.
The Hollywood heartthrob started his acting career with amateur theatre productions and found fame in the High School Musical. He later landed a singing role in the 2007 big screen adaptation of
Hairspray. Efron has since starred in a string of hit romantic comedies and dramas, but admits he "can't wait" to return to the stage, reports a website. "Without a doubt, I'd love to do Broadway. I actually can't wait to get back to musical theatre," he said. "There's a part of me that wishes I could go do it right now, but there's also a part of me that knows I need to tackle other types of acting opportunities first. I want to be a well-rounded, versatile performer. Until I master other things, it would be hard for me to get back to musical theatre. "But that will always be my home base and where I feel the most free, and it's something I will definitely do again, even if it's just for pleasure and personal fulfillment," he added.

Starring: Ranbir Kapoor, Ileana D'cruz and Priyanka Chopra. His parents named him Murphy, but everyone calls him Barfi! Always ready with a prank up his sleeve, he's quite the charmer, especially with the ladies! Art of narration
Although it gives one the feel of a silent movie but it does not bore you even for a second. Ranbir Kapoor looks cute and the boy next door. The dialogues are in the form of narration which adds a magical touch to the
movie. Namita Singh, GGDSD student Special treatment

Another scary role for Winona Ryder?
Hollywood actress Winona Ryder is in talks to star in the sequel of 1988 comedy horror movie Beetlejuice.
The 40-year-old played goth adolescent Lydia Deetz in the original movie and she is set to meet the film's director Tim Burton to discuss the possibility of appearing in a follow up to the dark classic, reported a website. When asked if she is to star in the sequel, Ryder said, "You tell me — I don't know! I've heard from journalists, that's how I found out, but I'm seeing Tim next week, and I will let you know." Seth Grahame-Smith is currently writing a script, commissioned by Burton, for a possible sequel. Ryder said that if a follow up movie was created then Michael Keaton is needed to reprise his role as main character Betelgeuse, a grotesque and perverted bio-exorcist, who scares humans for other Ghosts. "I'm trying to think about how that would work. Obviously I'm not the focal point; it's got to be Michael (Keaton). So is it happening? It's being written, but is it happening? Tim hasn't confirmed it yet," she added. — PTI

Ranveer speaks his mind
Sonakshi Sinha: I think she is a beautiful woman and charming too. She has come a long way by losing weight and honing her style. The guys in single-screen cinemas love her. I watched Rowdy Rathore in a single-screen and there were a lot of whistling and clapping for her. Men find her very hot! I mean this as a compliment.
Kareena Kapoor: I have loved Kareena Kapoor since I was a young boy. I was really excited to work with her. Bhansali says he had cast us for our high energy and open-hearted performances and because this would create amazing chemistry. I will have to wait for another film to work with her. Deepika Padukone: I have been hanging out with Bhansali and the crew members to get acquainted with them and learn about the film. Deepika is my leading lady and that is why we met for dinner. If we are going to shoot a love story for five months, then we have to know each other in advance. It is just preparation. Single status
I am single and enjoying myself. I do not have time for romance because I have to prepare for my roles and movies and I have to work out and watch my diet. I spend a lot of time preparing for my movies and even cut off from my family. I am not spontaneous; I prepare a lot. Link-ups
People write all sorts of things about me and my co-stars and other actors too. The media has an overactive imagination. I have been linked with Sonakshi but there was nothing and there is no truth to her father getting angry. I hardly speak to Sonakshi these days as we are not shooting together.

Wicked things to say…
The word on Raaz 3 is mixed but everyone has praised Bipasha Basu's wicked witch act! She talks about her film, being single, and becoming a match-maker. Happy to be bad
I am so glad I did this role because I don't think any other heroine has played such a negative character before. It could be the first time such a strong negative character was written too! I gave it my all and I am happy. Films are all I have these days and they make me happy. I am fierce about my career now. I have done strong roles like Jism and Corporate before and carried films on my shoulders. I have also been tagged glamourous so I believe I have achieved something. Match-maker
I go on dates every now and then. I am finding a girl for Vikram Bhatt because he would be happy being married again. He wants a dumb girl and today's girls are so smart in every way. So it will be a tough job for me. Finally single
I like to keep people guessing about my relationship status. I am really happy and free. I am feeling like a teenager again because I have been in relationships since I was 17. I like this breathing space. Now, everything is about me, my friends, and family. I feel liberated. I am living
it up. — HRM

PC to fall in love?
We all know that after making several socio-political films, Tigmanshu Dhulia has decided to make his first love story titled Milan Talkies.
