Fit at any age
Clothes can make or mar a personality. And when it comes to right or wrong fittings, they can make one look younger or otherwise…

The Google throws up a nine-digit result when you search on how to dress younger; what it doesn't tell you is that dressing younger is one thing and looking younger quite another! Just as Sarah Jessica Parker trying to pull off a pink frock is one thing and Demi Moore looking young all through her makeovers, quite another.

If a recent study is to be believed, a woman can look up to eight years younger simply by wearing well-tailored clothes, while choosing the wrong outfit can add up to seven years. If the fashion police is to be believed, the wrong outfit is as sinful as teaming orthopaedic shoes with maternity pants at a red carpet event!

The right fit

While a stitch in time may or may not save you nine, but a stitch at the right place certainly makes you shed eight years. Shares Deepshika, city-based designer with the brand Shimmers, "I totally agree with the study. Everything can have attractive packaging. Well-fitted clothes just ensure that you are packaged at your best." She adds, "Apart from those less than forty, women in India generally dress up either to cover themselves or to flaunt a price tag. Somewhere, style and sophistication was always compromised. The right fit ensures that." Just in case anybody substituted the fitted look with figure-hugging clothes! Laughs Ridhima Malhotra, fashion student, "The right fit can hide eighty per cent of your flaws, therefore it might be instrumental in making one look younger." While there are other ways to look older and wiser, wearing a dowdy dress that is one size bigger or two sizes smaller doesn't figure in anybody's list. The researchers from an online retailer made the claims after conducting a visual test. In the survey, they asked 2,400 people in Britain to guess the age of a 55-year-old woman. As many as 74 per cent believed that the model looked much younger in fitted clothes!

Cut to size
Kristen stewart was criticised for looking much older at Snow White and the Huntsman world premiere
Kristen stewart was criticised for looking much older at Snow White and the Huntsman world premiere

Question anyone from the fashion industry and they'll tell you a hundred things that go into making the perfect garment. The right fit and cut, happily falls in the first quarter itself. "A garment can be the best of silhouettes and embellishments, but if it doesn't fit you well, the effect is lost," says Mini Sondhi, designer behind the label Bling. However, there's only a limit to which she'll underscore it. "You can't look younger by just wearing fitted clothes. You can certainly look much more appealing and attractive and therefore slightly younger, but not this young." A wrong cut can make or mar any outfit! While this summer Kristen Stewart was accused of looking much older than her years, actress Dame Helen Mirren, 66, was once photographed wearing a red bikini looking at least thirty years younger than she was. As Rohhit Verma, Delhi-based designer, behind the brand Haute Couture, says, "Take Bollywood actress Rekha. She can put any young girl to shame whereas so many young girls look much older. The right cut can definitely make you look very young." Sums it up!

Spirit of a fighter
Model-turned-actor Jatinder Singh Grewal has bounced back after a hiatus
Manpriya Singh

The only good thing about doing forgettable cinema is that you are forgotten! Wallow in the fact; sit and cry over box-office duds or take a deep breath, re-invent yourself and bounce back like model-turned-actor Bunty Grewal did. The first runners-up of Gladrags manhunt, 1998, Bunty made his debut a decade ago with Praksh Jha's Rahul. The rest is an ironical history, which he has gladly written-off and is looking forward to his Punjabi flick Desi Munde. Meanwhile, he's been busy with, "a couple of Hindi projects, two television shows; running my own event management company and a Telugu film as well."

Full circle

Like we said no crying over spilt milk for him! "I must have taken those decisions for some reason. At that point of time, they seemed the right decisions. There are no regrets. Even in everyday life, some things go right, others don't." A super-model contest, television commercials for blue-chip brands and music videos for legendary artists; he's pretty much come a full circle. "There is no one particular dream role. But every good movie you watch, you wish you had done it. Like Manoj Bajpai's role in Gangs of Wasseypur; something that keeps you alive for the next ten years." Speaking of his past ten years, Chandigarh brings back memories of college days. "I'm so jealous of the guys who are studying now. It's a co-ed college now. Back in my time, it wasn't." He laughs, "We had to go for geris to GCG or Arts College to check out girls."

Right act

It's a time when everything is evolving — the modelling industry and the B-town movies, including the Punjabi cinema. "Suddenly, Punjabi cinema has reinforced the faith of a lot of producers — that if they make a good movie, it will be watched. We always had great music though. Punjabi community has always been well-represented in Bollywood; now we have our own industry." And then Desi Munde happened. "It's a story of two brothers with different ideologies; I play the elder brother." The language wasn't a bar for him, since, "I'm quite fluent in Punjabi; it comes naturally to me. In fact, a lot of my family is still here." Ask about a couple of Punjabi movies and he isn't left floundering for words. “I enjoyed watching Jatt and Juliet and then of course Carry On Jatta," shares Bunty aka Jatin Grewal. "Actually Bunty is only my nick-name. My real name is Jatinder Singh Grewal."

Up next

Upcoming projects include Luv U Sonio, "It's a film in which Rati Agnihotri's son is being launched. I play the second lead." Besides he is doing an interesting role in Short Cut Romeo, which he calls a grey film. "I play Ameesha Patel's husband, which is a slightly negative character. Even she has a grey role. There's Neil Nitin Mukesh as well, who again has negative shades. Everyone in this film is basically grey." Sounds interesting!

Look inwards

Your body is your temple. So what you put inside will reflect on the outside. My answer to healthy skin is positive thoughts and healthy food. I also use a face wash with salicylic acid which is a gentle exfoliant. I also drink a lot of lemon water whenever I eat. I moisturise my skin all the time. I avoid sodas of all kinds and sugary juices and drinks.

Hair ritual

I do a deep-conditioning ritual with coconut hair oil which takes cares of frizz, and makes my hair thick and bouncy and smooth. Avoid products with too much alcohol in them and if you use hot machines then conditioning and washing is very important.

Product list

I use Parachute Advanced Hot Oil for my hair, skin care by la Prairie, make-up by Bobbi Brown, and Neutrogena face wash. I never wear make-up at home and I just let my skin breathe.

Food guide

I eat 3-4 servings of vegetables and fruits and drink fluids like coconut water and lemon water. I also avoid eating junk food on the sets. I have milk, curd, sprouts and supplements in my diet daily. I like cooking too. I used to be skinny in America but have gained around ten kilos since I came to India and I like my healthy look.

Exercise regime

I love dancing, Yoga, and Zumba. I like going swimming too and I prefer all this to going to the gym which is boring for me. In New York, I cycle everywhere which takes care of my daily exercise. I tried cycling in Mumbai but it is not possible.

Akshay seeks blessings….

Akshay Kumar may be playing 'God' in his forthcoming home production OMG Oh My God But that hasn't stopped him from seeking divine intervention. While shooting for the sequel of Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai recently in Muscat, Akshay took out time from his busy schedule and visited a popular mosque.

He made this special trip to seek blessings for the well being of his soon to be born second child and to pray for his baby venture OMG Oh My God that releases this September. Both his babies are expected to come into the world this September and he is very nervous about both.

OMG Oh My God stars Paresh Rawal along with Akshay Kumar and is directed by Umesh Shukla. The film, which is slated to release on September 28, is based on Umesh's popular play Krishan v/s Kanhaiya that also featured Rawal in the lead role.

Deepika goes desi
Deepika Padukone
New role: Deepika Padukone

Deepika is running scared. So far the most abusive word she has used is 'slut' in Cocktail. For Ram Leela she needs to get a lot more colourful. Playing Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Juliet in Ram Leela is not going to be a cakewalk for Deepika. It requires a drastic and complete makeover, and not just from her Armani outfits to ghagra Cholis to look like a firebrand from Kutch. She would also have to work seriously on her Gujarati accent to sound credible.

However, there's a lot more to her character than clothes and diction. Deepika's character Leela has a peppery tongue.

"She plays daughter of the soil. Uninhibited totally oblivious to the niceties of ladylike conduct, she does and says exactly what she wants to, without caring about what the other person would think. Known to think twice before uttering even a syllable, Deepika has never played such an unabashed character before. She would have to learn a lot of words she has never heard let alone used before," says a source. According to sources, the heroine in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's film is "a very earthy woman with a hearty laugh, an earthy Juliet who is like a wild flower in a desert." The character also has to share many seriously intimate moments with her co-star. This basically meant that whoever played Bhansali's Leela had to lose all her inhibitions and submerge herself in the soil of Kutch, the area where the film is to be shot. Deepika will soon start dipping into her character's inner world. It won't be easy since she is an essentially reserved person. "If she thinks losing her inhibitions for her character in Cocktail gives her license to enter SLB's Gujju Juliet's world then she is in for a shock. SLB hopes to completely change her personality," says a source.

Go green

With the Ganesha festival around the corner the entire Mumbai has begun to prepare itself including our very own Piggy Chops who has always been a crusader for the environment. Priyanka Chopra has lent her support to the BIG Green Ganesha Campaign by donating newspapers that will go toward building eco-friendly Ganesha Idols from paper-mache.

PC has long been a green supporter and has also been seen as a Green Style Statement Ambassador for an environment campaign. Tradition dictates that seeking Lord Ganesha's blessings before an auspicious event garners success and good luck and it seems that Priyanka's efforts to appease the Lord may have something to do with her upcoming projects. With her next big release as an autistic girl in Barfi! and her much-awaited single In My City, from her maiden international album to launch next week, it seems that PC could well use a few blessings. And what better way to do it than by lending her name to a noble environmental cause!

Mo(o)re of torture!

Actor Roger Moore says his former wives Doorn Van Steyn and Dorothy Squires were physically abusive towards him. He faced several assaults by them, included being hit with a teapot and a guitar. Moore, who played James Bond from 1973 to 1985, has been married four times.

"(Doorn) would scratch me. She threw a pot of tea at me. I'd been sunbathing in the garden, I came up and I'd taken off my pants and I gave her some smart Alec answer and this teapot came hurtling at me. I said, 'Right, that's it, I'm leaving'," said the 84-year-old as saying. Speaking about his second wife Squires, he added: "There was a confrontation. I remember, to avoid confrontation, I used to strum the guitar and one day I was sitting on the edge of the table strumming and she was ranting on about something and I wasn't taking any notice. "Next thing I know, it was like slow motion, I could feel the guitar coming out of my hands and I could see it up above my head and... bash, it came down. She ruined the guitar. She had a great temper." After separating from third wife Luisa Mattioli, Moore is now happily married to socialite 71-year-old Kristina Tholstrup. — IANS

Models display Renu Tandon’s black and gold collection.

Her recent black and gold collection at the Wills India Lifestyle Fashion Week got thumbs up from fashionistas. Renu Tandon has been part of the industry for the last 15 years. So, when she makes a forecast, there are all the reasons to pay attention. She sums up the trends for this season.

What’s in: Anything that can be draped well. Skirts are a wise replacement for denims and trousers, and a welcome change as well. Long kaftans with appliqué work will make for a great evening wear, neither too casual, nor too much bling factor. Flowing sleeves of kaftans add to the style quotient the perfect way. As for couture, light draped lehengas are again a hit.

What’s out: Parallel trousers are the biggest fashion faux pas this season. Palazzo pants are in as of now but after two seasons, they will become ancient.

Colour count: With winter approaching, black is making a comeback but limit its use only for evening parties. For bright, sunny days, stick to fluorescent colours. Try green, fuchsia, orange and yellow.

Party couture: It’s time we got over the short dresses, experiment with a long resort gown. It’s a new segment and is catching the attention of fashion conscious.

Dressed to the nines: Julia Roberts is an evergreen star, not just for her acting but also for her impeccable dressing sense. In India, Sonam Kapoor is the clear winner. With just a few films, she has become a favourite of fashion magazines for their cover pages.

On the cards: My spring-summer collection will comprise a lot of fluorescents, but as always white will be the favourite bet of the season. Summer without white is unimaginable.

On the Indian fashion industry: The Indian fashion industry has gone global by all means. Export of designer creations from India has increased tremendously in the last few years. Indian designers have become popular in the international markets. Hope we will do even better from here onwards.

Every time we read about a dead tiger or how the world is depleting its natural resources, we get alarmed. We read about it, discuss these topics in those hi-flying dinner dates, but we hardly make an effort to do something about it. Moving away from her chosen course, architecture, Harnoor Boparai, 21-year-old, is now a student of University of Windsor, Canada studying environmental engineering. Watching her father, Harnoor started getting into the dynamics of environment. “My father got me acquainted with the concept of protecting the environment and sustainable development,” she says. We find out her viewpoints on this subject.

Motivational factor

Not sticking to the conventional field, Harnoor followed her heart to study nature. She plans to research and make a real difference in how the nature is perceived and used. “My biggest motivation comes from thinking that one day, I will be able to do something meaningful and give our future generations a better world to live in,” she smiles.

Harnoor’s commitment pushed her out of her comfort zone and made her move to a new country, where she had to establish herself. “Moving out is not easy,” she says, just hoping her effort will make a difference.

Feathers in cap

Based on her performance in architecture in Chandigarh and in Canada, Harnoor has managed to secure a scholarship for her education.

An expert in kathak, she took to learning the classical dance form in Class V.

A part of Engineers without Boundaries, she is actively involved in ensuring that African economy is controlled by environmental efforts. She was also an active participant in most singing competitions in school days.

Strengths and weaknesses

A keen learner, she considers her ability to play with numbers as her major strength. However, time management is her weak point. “It’s the worst part of my routine, not being able to manage my schedule,” she says.

Flipside of being an achiever

Harnoor thinks the hardest part of living alone in another country is being away from one’s family. “It does seem like a fun thing to do but seriously moving away from family can lead to testing times,” she adds. “The initial sense of loneliness can be depressing and adds on to other troubles one faces,” she says. Also, the lack of guidance has its own negatives. “All decisions have to be made on your own and you cannot blame anyone for the outcome,” she says.

Words of wisdom

Although the youngster has really not been able to follow it herself, but she does recommend a firm time schedule. “I know I haven’t been able to stick to mine but I suggest that it is vital for growth in any industry,” she says.

Strange bread-fellows
Kandla Nijhowne

Brinjal or baingan in Hindi is also bad mouthed as be-gun, implying it has no worthwhile qualities. This is miles from the truth. These deeply purple, glossy beauties are an excellent source of dietary fiber, vitamins B1, B6, potassium and much more. They taste best when grilled or broiled which explains why the smoky flavour of a brinjal bhartha is so appetizing! The skin, though somewhat pungent has a fair amount of fiber so we would do well to include it in the dish when possible. Brinjals in a sandwich would make strange ‘bread-fellows’ but they are a truly tantalizing combo with tomatoes and cheese within the layers. It can be made up with a burger bap, a long loaf or even ordinary bread slices. If you call it a baingan sandwich, it will be instantly dumped by the family. Announce it as Grilled-eggplant parmigiana sandwich and wait for the applause! Whoever said, “What's in a name ??”

Grilled eggplant parmigiana sandwich

Ingredients

  • 3 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 tbsp refined oil
  • 3 cloves garlic
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 loaf crusty bread or burger baps
  • 6 ounces mozzarella, thinly sliced
  • 1 medium eggplant
  • 2 medium tomatoes
  • 14 basil leaves

Method

  • Make a paste of the peeled garlic. Thickly slice the eggplant and tomatoes.
  • Heat a grill or grill pan to medium-high, then lightly oil it using the refined oil.
  • Cut through the bread you are using to get two even halves.
  • In a small bowl, combine garlic with 1 tablespoon of olive oil; then season with salt and pepper.
  • Brush this flavoured oil on cut sides of bread and grill until lightly toasted on both sides.
  • Arrange cheese on the bottom half of the bread.
  • Brush eggplant with 1 tablespoon of olive oil and season with salt and pepper.
  • Grill until tender and lightly charred, flipping over once (this could take 12 to 15 minutes).
  • Layer eggplant on cheese.
  • Similarly, brush tomatoes with 1 tablespoon oil and season with salt and pepper.
  • Grill until lightly charred, 2 to 3 minutes, flipping once.
  • Layer tomatoes on eggplant, top with basil, and sandwich with top half of bread.
  • If using a loaf, cut crosswise into 4 pieces and serve warm.

TROUBLE SHOOTER
It’s a matter of mind
Simmi Waraich

I need some tips for dealing with my never-ending fear that I have some serious illness. I was calm all day, then I scratched under my arm, and now have convinced myself that deep down there is something wrong and that I have some type of cancer. Even though I just went to the doctor last week to get checked for breast cancer. I'm 23 years old. I can't deal with this. I keep reading things online.

Kamalpreet, Chandigarh

At times, some people have repeated intrusive thoughts that they have a serious illness or that something is wrong with them. Or even that the illness they have is a sign that they are always ill. People with this fear are unable to control their anxiety no matter how much they are reassured. In fact avoid reassurance as that worsens the situation. Patients with hypochondriasis often are not aware that depression and anxiety produce their own physical symptoms, and mistake these symptoms for manifestations of a non-psychological disorder or disease. There is an excessive preoccupation with the physical symptoms which affects the person's normal life. Stay away from the Internet and ride out the obsession. Treatment involves medication and cognitive behaviour therapy.

My husband and I are separated. My daughter does not like anything I do and is extremely irritated with me. She blames me for everything. I do not stop her from talking to her father but he does not care much for her. He calls her only when he feels like. She becomes very aggressive with me.

Anita, Panchkula

It can be difficult for a child, especially if they have witnessed a bad marriage from early on. Many parents fight or argue or talk about the other in front of the child which can be very unsettling.

She is taking out her anger on you. Do tell her it is okay to talk and let out her feelings. Instead of getting angry in return maybe you can acknowledge her feelings by paraphrasing what she says to you. Like "It sounds like you are upset with me for your father leaving. What you are saying is that he left because of me." Even if her anger seems illogical to you, just avoid overreacting to what she says- if you are getting upset, leave the room after telling her that you don’t agree with her but do not wish to get into an argument so you are leaving. Tell her you are willing to talk once she calms down. If you react and get angry at her in turn, it becomes an endless cycle of accusations. Break out of the cycle by not reacting angrily.

Doc Talk
On your heel!
Dr Harinder Batth

Frequently wearing high heels, along with the natural changes in your aging feet, can set the stage for foot problems. Over the years, your feet become wider and longer and the natural padding under your heel and forefoot become thinner. When you wear high heels — shoes with 2 inches heels or higher — your foot slides forward in your shoe, redistributing your weight, creating unnatural pressure points and throwing your body's natural alignment for a toss.

What to do

  • If you can, avoid pointed shoes. They squeeze your toes together. A good way to see if your toes have enough room is that you should be able to wiggle your toes without problems.
  • Buy shoes that allow your feet to ‘breathe’. Avoid plastics that are uncomfortable.
  • Try to avoid kitten heels where the heel is very thin. This puts pressure to your knees.
  • Buy shoes at the end of the day, as your feet expands throughout the day.
  • The ideal heel height is 1-1.5 inches. Anything above 2 inches causes problems.

Take care

  • Many fashionable heels don’t necessary have any padding. There are many gel pads and cushions inserts available today. You simply stick them to the sole of your shoes.
  • Take smaller steps.
  • Don’t wear heels everyday.
  • End your night with a warm foot bath.
  • Do regular calf stretching exercise.

Random moves and tapping on the beats is what Star Plus’ Ek Hazaaron Mein Meri Behna Hain’s lead actor Karan Tacker enjoys. Recently, for an awards function, Karan was asked to showcase his dancing skills. The actor was more than happy to perform at the event. “I was approached for the Big Star Young Entertainment Awards and was excited about my performance. However, the song initially given to me was not a foot-tapping number so I politely requested the organisers to let me dance on Pungi. This song is my favourite so I was keen on performing on this number. They were sweet to give in and I enjoyed the act,” says the charming actor.

Karan was happy as he felt that his dedication to the song had paid off, we hope Saif Ali Khan is also happy with Karan performing to his tune. To catch Karan’s electrifying performance, watch Star Plus on September 16.

On a comeback trail
Amna Sharif
small step: Amna Sharif

Aamna Sharif returned to the small screen after being away for four long years. Now she’s excited about her new show Honge Judaa Na Hum and her new co-star.

How are you feeling on returning to TV?

It feels great. I learnt a lot during my earlier show and now I have groomed as an actor. It is very exciting to return to the small screen again.

Why did you choose this show?

First of all, I got many offers for shows but none appealed to me. My character (Muskaan) is closer to my age and is more mature than my role in Kahiin to Hoga. People loved Kashish, and I hope they love Muskaan too. The script of this show is lovely with an interesting story line, which is why I accepted it.

So it’s yet another love story?

Yes, but with a twist. I believe in romance and in this show we have depicted a different aspect of it. Honge Judaa Na Hum is a contemporary show with real characters like Muskaan is a very contemporary workaholic woman yet connected to her culture.

Do you regret leaving TV for films?

No. Films were a better experience. I have grown as a person due to the various experiences I have had.

What would you say about your chemistry with Raqesh Vashisht?

We look good together on screen is the reaction I have got so I guess we will get there. Chemistry takes time to develop.

You were linked with Rajeev Khandelwal and Aftab Shivdasani.

I don’t talk about my personal life.

If your birthday is September 13...

Health of spouse needs proper care and attention. Simply ignore those who approach you for temporary loans. You will have some difficulty with family members, but don't let this ruin the peace of your mind. Slow progress of work brings minor tensions. Tax and insurance matters will need some attention.

It will not be a favourable year for implementing your pre-planned strategies with regard to money or home loan or car loan. Be mindful of your income and expenses to maintain financial stability. Love matters should be handled carefully as there will be lack of understanding. Common cold or leg pain may trouble you. Don't worry too much about this transitional phase. Act cautiously; learn to accept the ups and downs of life. You'll be able to stabilise your relationship and feel intense emotions.

Being born on the 13th day of September you probably will have differing points of view to a rival at work. You'll treat your partner with great tenderness and will want to spend as much time as possible together. This will make you aware of your deep feelings. Sincere and honest, you are a serious, hard-working individual. Your feelings are likely to seem somewhat repressed at times. Your intolerance and insistence on complete accuracy can be irritating to some. You should avoid major expenses this year. Wait for a better moment and for now just focus on saving. Entrepreneurs will need to be particularly attentive to business. It is worth preparing a clear action plan and keeping your eyes wide open.

Students appearing for any written tests or interviews will emerge successful. As you fly higher, you will draw more flak. So, you must prepare for heavy opposition. Do not become too alarmed if your pace is slowed down.

You may gain some reputation in your professional life, but may have to face minor difficulties along the way. If planning to shift into a new house or flat you will get the accommodation of your choice. New friends will be most helpful, especially in career, networking and romantic connections. Expansion of your 'circle of influence' is a definite, even if you do not try!

You will be full of vitality and work spirit. On some days your health might experience ups and downs and hence you are required to observe slight precautions as and when required. However, you are likely to do well in routine life. You cross a threshold that requires you to take a hard, cold look at what you want and need in relationships.

Mood: In a 'planning stage.' Preferred signs: Taurus, Gemini, Leo. Positive colours: Crimson, dark red. Select days: Friday. Favourable numbers: 2, 3, 16, 18, 23.

Mahima Chaudhry (September 13, 1973, Kelowna, British Columbia) was a model before she made her Bollywood debut in Pardes (1997). She changed her name from Ritu Chaudhry to Mahima Chaudhry since Subhash Ghai has a superstitious belief of launching big careers with actresses whose name start with M. She was nominated for Filmfare Awards for that role. She was also nominated for her performances in Dhadkan and Dobara. Her career may slowdown in 2015.
