Farmers advised to adopt beekeeping
Tribune News Service

Fatehgarh Sahib, September 12
In order to create awareness among farmers about the new avenues to supplement their income, a week-long training workshop has been organised by the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) from today.

Dr Harinder Singh, Deputy Director, KVK, said farmers were facing tough times due to decreasing land holdings and increasing labour cost and most of them had been caught in debt trap. In such a scenario new opportunities should be created to increase the income of farmers, he added.

Dr Singh said beekeeping was one of the most profitable ventures through which farmers could increase their earnings. He said not only farmers but unemployed youth, retired employees and other people could also start beekeeping. While talking about the training for beekeeping, he said after the completion of training the interested persons would be issued certificates by PAU, which would help them in getting 50 per cent subsidy under the National Horticulture Mission.

Later, during an address to the trainees assistant professor Dr Reet Verma told about the basics of beekeeping. She informed the trainees about the flowers to be grown, various diseases affecting the bees and precautions required to prevent such diseases. She also apprised them of various instruments such as extraction units and other machinery, which were being used in beekeeping.

The State has moved the Punjab and Haryana High Court to cancel the bail granted to Praveen Kumar. Taking up the petition, the High Court today has issued notice for September 17.

The Panchkula police, too, has ordered an inquiry into the matter, after Hakam Rai, a relative of another accused, complained that Praveen Kumar told the accused that bail “is possible against a payment of Rs 37 lakh”.

It complainant further said, “The accused has said he has got bail from the Punjab and Haryana High Court with the help of some persons, including police officials, who submitted false information to the court and concealed true facts.”

“The accused, Praveen Kumar, was arrested with opium and 9 kg milk opium, worth crores of rupees. He is now out on bail and luring other persons to pay Rs 37 lakh to get bail,” the complainant alleged.

Body found near ISBT-43
May be a case of hate crime or robbery: Police
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, September 12
A mutilated body of an unidentified man was found in the jungle area, which is on the rear side of the Inter-State Bus Terminus in Sector 43, this morning. The body had several deep wounds on the chest and stomach. The man appears to be in his mid thirties and the police suspects it to be a case of hate crime or robbery.

The spot of murder is a few metres away from the Sector 43 police post and just adjoining the CRPF Complex in Sector 43.

The incident came to light at 9 am when a rickshaw puller, Badri Prasad, went to the jungle area to attend to nature’s call. He was shocked on seeing the body and rushed to the Sector 43 police post to inform the police.

The police reached the spot and a CFSL team was called to collect samples.

The victim was wearing underwear and his clothes were torn. He was wearing one red-coloured slipper on his left feet while the other slipper was found at some metres distance from the body suggesting that the victim was dragged after being killed. The police also recovered another black-coloured slipper from the spot, which it suspects to be that of the accused. Besides, some clothes were found near the body. However, no document or mobile phone, which could ascertain the identification of the deceased were recovered, making it a blind murder case.

The police also suspects that the man could be an apple trader, as he appears to be from Himachal. The police questioned a number of workers at the Grain Market in Sector 26 and also summoned all those present at the ISBT and passersby to the spot to identify the body.

The body was kept at the spot for over two hours where over 100 passersby were asked to identify it. However, no one could identify the man.

Later in the evening, the police printed over 200 pamphlets, showing the photograph of the deceased, which would be pasted at all bus stations, buses and other public places.

The police is also sending teams to bus stations of Mohali and Panchkula to get leads. In addition, the fingerprints recovered from the spot will be sent to Phillaur for examination.

“The identification of the body is a must as it will further lead us to clues in the murder case. It seems to be a case of robbery, but going by the brutality with which the man has been murdered, it seems to be a case of prior enmity or hate crime. We are investigating,” said Sub Inspector Rajiv Kumar, in charge, Sector 43 police post.

A case of murder under Section 302 of the IPC has been registered at the Sector 36 police station against the unidentified accused.

Deepankar Sharda
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, September 12
They may be wary of hot and spicy food, but the Kiwis are relishing delicacies like butter chicken, mutton rogan josh, garlic and butter nan, available locally. The New Zealand team is in the city to participate in the forthcoming Davis Cup Tennis Tournament from September 14.

Although the Kiwis are taking nutritious and protein-rich diet, dishes like butter chicken with tomato and chicken tikka with salt and white pepper are a hit among them. However, the visitors do follow the advice given by their food expert.

“They are having two meals a day with both white and red meat. The food is non-fried with low salt and pepper,” said Chetak Goyal, the chief chef with the team.

“The players are not having the Indian dishes in the way they are prepared traditionally. They prefer Indian dishes with minimum spices and zero-oil. The Kiwis are preparing themselves for the upcoming tie and are taking the diet keeping in mind the humidity and heat. They have showed interest in the local food. They have also asked for multi-grain breads, butter nan and garlic bread,” said Chetak.

“They are having different items everyday. The regular items are soups, dal ka shorba, and green vegetables. More than taste, they like to have a simple and healthy diet. Hopefully, in the coming days we will get a chance to treat them to the typical Indian food,” added Chetak.
