Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, September 5
The UT education department, that sends teams across the nation to represent the city in various national-level games, provided kits to the under-17 boys soccer team at the eleventh hour. The team is representing the city in the School National Games for Boys (U-17) at Srinagar. The kit, which includes tracksuits, shorts, jerseys, studs, shin guard and stockings, was given to the players just an hour before they boarded the Jammu bound bus.

The team was expecting their kits at least three days before the competition to have time for trying out studs and other items. “We were expecting the kit a bit early in order to get used to it. But we were provided the kit just before our departure from the city. We have taken our own kits. It is impossible to wear these shoes for playing match, but we will surely wear the jerseys and shorts,” said a player.

According to the officials of the UT Education department, the delay in providing kits was due to the e-tendering system. “The delay was due to the e-tendering system. Hopefully the other teams will get the kits in time. I don’t know the exact timings when the kits were distributed to the players, but there was a delay due to the on-spot purchasing criteria,” said Ram Kumar Sharma, District Education Officer.

The assistant education officer (sports) added, “Our e-tendering bid are expected to open on September 19. Due to the early dates of the nationals of soccer, the kits were purchased on spots. Moreover, the players were given a proper kit. It’s better to have something than nothing. The other teams will get the kits and all other sports wear on time,” said Rajeev Tondon. When asked, if non-football coaches accompany the team, he said, “The team constitutes of a single coach and the other two to accompany the team are the physical education teachers. The coach has an important role to play. The other two are there to look after the players,” he said.
