HR staff stage dharna

Ambala, August 30
Employees of Haryana Roadways (HR), Ambala depot, sat on a dharna in front of the exit gate of the depot to protest against the suspension of a driver and a conductor on the complaint of a female passenger on Wednesday.

The employees, led by leaders of Sarv Karamchari Sangh, Haryana Karamchari Mahasangh, Roadway Joint Action Committee, did not allow even a single bus to exit from the depot till 12.50 afternoon today.

According to information, a female passenger Kamla Devi, coming from Kalka, was on way to Ambala Cantt in a roadway bus. The driver, instead of taking the bus to Ambala Cantt, diverted it to Ambala City, forcing Kamla to step down at the Kalka chowk. Kamla forgot to pick up her luggage from the bus as she was confused over the action of the driver.

Later she made a complaint with the general manager of Ambala depot against the driver and the conductor in this regard. The GM suspended the duo.

After the protest by the employees, the GM revoked the suspension, and ordered an inquiry into the matter. The union leaders were opposing any inquiry into the matter. It is learnt that the protest caused a revenue loss of lakhs of rupees.

Gang of car thieves busted

Kalka, August30
The Pinjore police claimed to have busted a gang involved in stealing cars in the area. Police sources said that Parveen and Satwant of Rajpur (Punjab) have been arrested from a rented house in Anchal vihar Colony of Pinjore during a raid conducted on a tip off. During the raid, the police have recovered an Indica car, a country made pistal, forged documents, number plates and stamps.

Two other accused, Amit (leader of the gang) and Sunil, managed to flee during the raid. Sunil hails from Bihar, added the police sources. — TNS

HC directs Punjab, Haryana to install speed governors
Sets November 2 as the deadline for constituting committee

Chandigarh, August 30
The Punjab and Haryana High Court today directed the States of Punjab and Haryana to frame rules and constitute a special committee to prevent anyone from tampering with speed governors installed in transport vehicles.

The High Court set November 2 as a deadline for constituting the special committee. The transport secretaries were present in the court, as the case came up for hearing this morning. 

The court had reprimanded the transport secretaries on the previous date of hearing for failure to abide by their own undertakings on installation of speed governors. 

The Bench was hearing a petition filed by an NGO, Suraksha Foundation. It sought directions for the states of Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh so they could prepare an implementation plan for the installation of electronic speed governors within a specific timeframe.

The Bench, had recently asserted: "No request for extension of the time would be granted by this court in view of the time limit settled by the Supreme Court." In the petition, the foundation had earlier sought directions to the state of Punjab and another respondent to "follow the provisions of Rule 118 of the Central Motor Vehicle Rules; and to direct the state to prepare an implementation plan."

‘City’s got talent’

It was a special treat for boxing lovers of City Beautiful with international boxer Manoj Kumar and head coach of Indian Boxing team Gurbaksh Singh Sandhu marking their presence. Both were here to encourage players taking part a junior-level boxing competition at SD Public School, Sector 32, this evening.

“I am happy to see the standard of game here. The boxers performed well. Moreover, the city has lot to offer to boxers in terms of facilities. The facilities, as far as I can judge, are prefect to groom a player,” said Gurbaksh. “The game is gaining popularity day by day and we have many young players capable of claiming top spots in various national and international tournaments. The talent needs to be groomed in the right manner. Professionals need to come forward and help produce good players for the nation,” added Gurbaksh.

Manoj Kumar, a Commonwealth Games medallist and a participant in London Olympics, said, “Good facilities and infrastructure for junior players is the key to success. If the basics are clear, there is no stopping you.” On his future plans, Manoj said, “The result of recent Olympics was disheartening but I've learnt my lesson and am working on all aspects to improve myself.”

Tournament held

Earlier, the cagers of Guru Nanak Public School, Sector 36, lifted the 13th Pandit Mohan Lal Memorial Basketball Tournament while the boxers of SD School, Sector 32, won the 4th Pandit Mohan Lal Memorial Boxing Championship today.

Gurbaksh Singh Sandhu, Indian Boxing Coach along with International Boxer Manoj Kumar distributed prizes among the winners.

GMSSS-Karsan emerge overall champions

Chandigarh, August 30
The boxers of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Karsan, bagged the overall championship in the recently concluded inter-school boxing championship for girls (U-17). The school also bagged the runners up trophy in the boys (U-14) event of the competition.

Boxers Shilpa, Pooja and Chandani bagged the top honours in the girls category while Ankit, Arjun, Karan Vijay and Atul won medals in the boys (U-14) event of the competition.
