All tied-up
Whether it is for accessories or finances or any other reason, tie-ups at the fashion weeks surely increase the impact of any show…

Ashima Batish

Rewind to 2011’s Lakme Fashion Week. Designer Wendell Rodricks found a sponsor in Himalayan, a mineral water brand. His name in turn helped the brand get attention at the big event.

Cut to the latest edition of LFW — Neeta Lulla has teamed up rightly with Forever Jewellery. Tie-ups in the fashion world are not a new phenomenon; reasons for the collaborations vary though. For Wendell it was finances, while for Neeta it is the jewellery that would complement her ethnic collection. The jewellery house was the official partner of LFW’s last season. After the positive response their designs got last season, they decided to come up with a show of their own this time. “So, we approached Neeta Lulla. She readily accepted the offer and even decided to take up the job of the jewellery designer because she knew that only elaborate jewellery could do justice to her designs,” says Amit Bandi, GM of the brand. The tie-up also suited her theme – Radha.

Another prominent partnership during this season of LFW was that of accessory brand Veev and designer Aki Narula. The designer contributed to the Veev’s show by styling the models. “I had to ensure that my creations did not take away the focus from the bags and clutches,” says Aki. All the creations were strictly in black and grey, which made the bright coloured bags in red, parrot green, yellow and blue stand out. Also the creations were very feminine, made to suit the main event — showcasing of bags. “When you are promoting any luxury item, it’s better to present it in a grand manner. With Veev, that was precisely my aim.” Collaborations have worked the best for liquor brands, which have been able to do a lot of surrogate advertising. Blenders Pride Punjab International Fashion Week is already into its third edition and gets a great response from the buyers here each time.

And had it not been for tie-ups, Delhi-based fashion designer Renyu Tandon’s models wouldn’t have walked the ramp in Jimmy Choo heels. She had for most of her shows tied up with jewellery brands as well. “A designer can’t leave the impact on the clients only through creations. The complete look comes only with the right footwear and jewellery.”

There have been cases where fashion designers have taken up a social cause. For instance, Nandita Raipurani, fashion designer, who has been working in coordination with PETA. “We promptly took up the cause and voiced our concern for animal skin being used for garments as well as accessories.” She also came up with a collection of animal prints that were digitally done and even if Nandita does not regularly showcase her work at fashion weeks, she makes sure she comes up with one such collection every season. Whatever the reasons, tie-ups in the fashion industry are only providing impetus to one of the fastest growing markets in India.

Star walk

Bollywood stars walk the ramp… isn’t that a kind of a tie-up? Stars get the right platform to promote their films and creations by designers get the right bodies. If it’s not for a movie, it still benefits the actors to take up the role of show-stoppers.; at least this way they get their share of applause. For example, the one-film wonder till now, Amy Jackson, walked the ramp at the recently concluded LFW.

The language of dance
Renowned Odissi dancer Daksha Mashruwala says the dance form provides a lot of space for experimentation
Jasmine Singh

Whether it is life, music or even tradition, it retains freshness only if it flows like a river; anyone who gets stuck like a mountain, ends up with only a handful of experiences. Likewise for tradition, every generation adds a little, omits something and then passes the baton forward. Renowned Odissi dancer Daksha Mashruwala, in Chandigarh to perform at the Varsha Ritu Nritya Sandhya organised by the Indian National Theatre, has a beautiful way of looking at it. Eyes sparkling under the dark shade of kohl, gesticulating like the fine mudras, Daksha speaks softly. “I like to look at dance and its various nuances like grammar. So, when I choreograph a dance I don’t change the grammar, I only bring about meaningful additions.”

Performing with her students in Chandigarh, Daksha trained under Mrinalini Sarabhai in Bharatnatyam and continued her journey further in Odissi with Guru Kelucharan Mahapatra. It is said that an artist speaks through the performance, so does Daksha, but there is some talking to do before her performance at Tagore Theatre on Thursday!

Guru gyan

No matter what contemporary inputs a student brings, he or she is never too far from the guru’s teachings. Says Daksha, who has dedicated herself to Odissi dance, “Guruji was an intuitive dancer. I would often ask him how he choreographed a dance and he would say that there is lot of grammar in the sculptures. He would always ask me to study them in detail.”

The word is innovation

Daksha has recently choreographed some new ballets — Gopi Geet, Nav Rasa, Laadli and Rukmini Haran, which have some fine additions. “Innovation in dance means the urge to do something different, which comes from an inspiration. Nature could be inspiring. All the same, the basic essence of Odissi doesn’t change, I only add new themes and body movements,” adds Daksha, who has done a ballet with Mallika Sarabhai titled An Idea Named Meera. “Classical dancers are often accused of performing on Ram or Krishan, but there are so many different themes I take up all the time. An Idea Named Meera brought alive the identity of Meera in a new way,” she adds.

Passing the baton

Daksha runs a dancing institute in Mumbai, Kaishiki, which nurtures and trains talented young dancers. However, she doesn’t deny the ‘somewhat missing’ strain of guru-shishya bond. Daksha adds, “It has its own advantages and disadvantages. If the tradition created some kind of exploitation of shishya, it also led to an in-depth understanding of the dance form.” Daksha is a purist when it comes to Odissi, however, she feels the dance form offers a lot of freedom to experiment.

Right time & place

“I can see there is not much of classical dancing happening in Bollywood these days,” she shares adding that performing arts need a right place and time to come alive. “Most of the leading actors, who come from ‘filmi’ families, don’t have time for classical dance and it shouldn’t be performed where the essence cannot be highlighted. If I were to do Odissi on Kaanton sey kech keech key yeh anchal (Guide) it would look so out of place,” Daksha smiles.

The issue of finance

Money is the bottom-line of all things; Daksha cannot deny its need. “Passing on a traditional legacy is also an expensive deal. All our make-up, lights, costume or travel requires money,” she says.

On a song
Ashima Batish

One should never underestimate the importance of music in Hindi films. A film might or might not be a hit but if it has some original music to boast of, half of the work is done; probably the reason why in Mahesh Bhatt’s films music is always given a lot of importance. It’s this fact that Bisakh Jyoti refers to when asked whether he will be able to establish himself in the industry amid cut-throat competition. “Music is still a very important feature of Hindi cinema. There is always a requirement of new singers and fresh voices. I hope music directors will find my voice suitable,” says the singer, who was in Chandigarh on Wednesday to announce the auditions of Sa Re Ga Ma’s next season.

The first runner-up of the singing reality show in 2010, he has so far sung three Bollywood tracks. The title track of No Problem is his claim to fame and next on the cards is Sorry Daddy. “Neither do I have a godfather in the industry nor been able to make contacts. Whatever little I have achieved is on the basis of my hardwork.” Bisakh not just sings well, he also writes his own lyrics and composes music. Since two years Bisakh is awaiting his big break, but he sounds optimistic. “There is work for everyone in the industry, what matters is how well one does it. I hope by the end of this year I am able to create my own identity here.” Keeping our fingers crossed!

Green thumb
Small spread
Satish Narula

We have been receiving queries on some flowering trees that could be recommended for small spaces. Now what does that small space mean—a home garden, a narrow road, a premises? However, let us talk about some of the small stature flowering trees for small spaces.

So far we have been planting whatever is locally available. This would become a problem later on when the plants grew to their potential spread. Now the planting is done judiciously. The planners have started considering the space and area available. People know that big trees have become problem for areas where there are narrow roads, small spaces or the locations with overhead wiring or underground services, including sewerage.

Depending upon the locations and after thorough consideration, one could go for such trees that have medium growth and start flowering early. Another character of such trees should be that these are deciduous in nature and could be pruned to contain their growth, wherever required.

The flowering trees that qualify for this condition are Lahura, Pride of India, Erythrina and Bauhinia. Lahura bears very bold red, orange or yellow flowers and is also known for its medicinal value. The plant is medium sized and bears flowers in the middle of the tree too. However, the flowering and foliage appear side by side. The tree requires less water and is almost drought resistant.

Another species that is drought resistant is Erythrina that bears brick red or sparkling red blooms. The tree is deciduous and bears flowers when there is no leaf on it. The pride of India is another tree that gives very attractive flowers in bunches. Whole of the tree is covered when in bloom. There are many varieties that bear blooms in pink, mauve and white. The tree looks ornamental even during seeding.

The ‘in’ side
Sunsational driveway
Sukhmani

It is highly essential to have a well-lit driveway for your safety as well as your security. Due to poor driveway lighting, vehicles unintentionally run-over flower pots and hedges or bang into gates. Also a poorly lit driveway is more inviting to burglars than a well-lit one.

Installing driveway lights is therefore highly recommended for houses that have long driveways. Lighting up your driveway is also an easy way to make a good first impression with visitors to your home.

There are many good options for choosing driveway lights and the most popular ones among them are solar lights. These lights are powered by the energy from the sun. This type of lighting is energy efficient and environment-friendly since it uses no electricity and produces no harmful

rays or chemicals. They are wireless and easy to install and remove. Solar panels are used to capture energy from sun rays during daytime. This energy is then stored in the device and used later to light up the driveway. The lights turn on automatically by sensing the suns retreat over the horizon.

Some of these lights use separate solar panels while others are integrated. Integrated solar lights have the panels attached to the surface of the device. This type has to be placed directly under the sun to charge and function properly. For solar driveway lighting, you will probably want to focus on low voltage and LED bulbs that use very little energy, and are perfect for solar-powered lighting.

One down side to solar lights is that after shining brightly initially, the lights become less bright as the night wears on. When the batteries have been totally charged during an average sunny day, the solar lights provide decent lighting for most of the night, but the output is not as consistent on cloudy or rainy days. For such days I recommend that you have an alternate light source.

GET PHYSICAL
On your knee!
Sachin Kalra

Composed of bone, cartilage, ligaments, muscle and tendons, your knee is one of your body’s most complex joints. The knee joint allows you to run, walk and play sport. Awkward movements, falls and collisions, sudden twists, excessive force or overuse can result in a range of injuries to the knee joint and the structures supporting it.

Here are some exercises you can do to both stretch and strengthen the knee area:

Hamstring curl: Hold onto the back of a chair or counter top. Flex one knee up as far as is comfortable, bringing your heel towards your buttock. Hold for 5-10 seconds and then lower slowly. If possible, do not touch the floor between repetitions. Do 1-3 sets with 12-15 repetitions each. Remember to rest in between sets.

Wall slide: Leaning with your back against a wall, bend your knees 30°, sliding down the wall, then straighten up again. Move slowly and smoothly, using your hands on the wall for balance. Keep feet and legs parallel, and do not allow knees to move over the toes. Repeat 5 -10 times.

Bent-leg raises: Sitting in a chair, straighten one leg in the air (without locking the knee). Hold for about one minute. Bend your knee to lower the leg about halfway to the floor. Hold for 30 seconds. Return to starting position. Work up to 4 reps on each leg.

Straight-leg raises: Sitting in a chair, rest your foot on another chair. Lift the foot a few inches off the chair while keeping your leg straight. Hold for 5 -10 seconds. Return to resting position. Repeat 5 -10 times.

Knee flex: Sitting in a chair, loop a long towel under your foot (resting on the floor). Gently pull on the towel with both hands to bend the knee, raising your foot 4 - 5 inches off the floor. Hold for 5 - 10 seconds, then release. Repeat 5 times.

Lying double leg curl: Lie on your stomach with both hands under your head. Contracting the hamstrings muscles, curl both legs toward your buttocks stopping when your knees are at a 90-degree angle. Inhale and slowly return to the starting position. Ankle weights may be worn to increase intensity. Do 1-3 sets with 12-15 repetitions each. To keep your knees healthy, follow these tips—

What to do

Strengthen the muscles around your knee.
Warm up before workout as cold muscles are prone to injuries. Also cooling down with stretching is as important as warming up.
When doing squats, lunges, or leg presses, avoid locking knees completely. Use low weight and high repetitions.
Maintain a healthy weight.
Get regular exercise.
Wear appropriate shoes.

The musical chairs…

Several heroines have walked out of films and joined back or they have been replaced. We take a look at such controversies in recent times

All's well that ends well

Deepika Padukone in Race 2: She signed the movie and then walked out after shooting for four days because of Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani. Ramesh Taurani was angry and sued her. Priyanka Chopra was almost about to replace her when she agreed to join the movie again and gave new dates. Now the producer is all praise for her acting abilities and work ethics.

Back to square one

Kareena Kapoor in Heroine: Kareena Kapoor found a dream project in Heroine but didn't do it because of date issues. She also had reservations with the script. The movie fell back in her lap and she accepted it on her own terms. Bhandarkar roped in screenwriter Niranjan Iyengar to convince her and add to the dialogues and screenplay (Iyengar penned the dialogues). She asked for a few changes in the script, got Randeep Hooda to replace Arunoday Singh, and has been paid a whopping Rs eight crore for it. She has also asked for a share in the profits, thereby becoming the first actress to do so.

Kareena Kapoor in Raam Leela: Once again, Kareena cited date issues and Sanjay Leela Bhansali said that his Leela (Indian Juliet) could not be a married woman as there were talks of Kareena marrying Saif in October. Bhansali considered Deepika and Priyanka but went back to Bebo because her wedding has been postponed. She is doing the Indian adaptation of Romeo+Juliet with Ranveer Singh.

Once upon a time…

Prachi Desai in The Informer/Jannat 2: Prachi Desai and Emraan Hashmi worked together in Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai and Vishesh Films decided to cast them in The Informer. Prachi developed reservations about the costumes and intimate scenes so she was replaced by Esha Gupta to play the role of Janvi Singh Tomar in Kunal Deshmukh's Jannat 2 which became a massive hit.

Love's labour lost

Jacqueline Fernandez in Raaz 3: Jacqueline Fernandez got her first hit with Murder 2 and she looked sensational in it. So she was to work with the Bhatts again in Raaz 3. Now she has been dating Sajid Khan for a while and he didn't like his girlfriend wearing sexy and tiny costumes and doing love scenes in the movie. So he asked her to drop it and do "respectable films." She was replaced by Esha Gupta who is very comfortable with her sensuality and is sure to have consecutive hits working with the Bhatts. — HRM

The last attempt

Sunny Leone Jism 2 got a good opening but poor reviews and bad word-of-mouth publicity, it lost steam after the weekend. Sunny Leone has been visiting cinemas and signing autographs, though.

Meanwhile, producers Dino Morea and Pooja Bhatt have donated the sexy costumes worn by Sunny Leone and the other actors in Jism 2 to PETA for the benefit of their adopt-a-dog campaign. Nothing is sexier than compassion for animals!

The art of moving on

Robert Pattinson, who is reportedly hiding out at Reese Witherspoon's California ranch ever since Kristen Stewart's cheating scandal came to light, was spotted having a good time at a local bar. Pattinson was spotted with a few mates at Deer Lodge, a country-western bar in Ojai.

The 26-year-old British actor "seemed to be having an amazing time" one eyewitness said, adding that the Twilight star had "a few drinks and laughs" with a group of Robert Pattinson friends as live country music played. "He looked like a guy that was just trying to enjoy himself and get away... seems like a good kid!"

Largely ignoring calls and texts from a contrite Stewart, 22, Pattinson has been "a total mess," a source said. "He's been questioning everything." But lately, he seems, to be getting over everything. — PTI

He is now looking at other scripts to work on till this one materialises. There were also reports in the media that the director has been asked to leave Dharam Productions by Karan Johar. However, he denied it.

The showstoppers and the hot steppers…

Bollywood made its presence felt yet again at the recently-concluded Lakme India Fashion Week with several beauties attending the gala and walking as showstoppers for designers, with Kareena Kapoor and Hema Malini being the prominent faces during the event.

The Lakme Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2012 season saw as many as 86 designers showcasing their collections.

This year, the only big Bollywood name was of Kareena Kapoor walking the ramp for emerging designers Kallol Datta and husband-and-wife duo Pankaj and Nidhi.

The other prominent celebrity on ramp was veteran actress Hema Malini, dressed up as Radha for ace designer Neeta Lulla. Looking graceful in a light rich ivory brocade sari, Kirron Kher walked the ramp for Gaurang Shah. British model Amy Jackson turned showstopper for Pernia Qureshi. — PTI

Brad Pitt buys motorbike for Maddox

Hollywood star Brad Pitt has reportedly bought his son Maddox a motorbike for his 11th birthday.

The Moneyball actor, who also raises Pax, nine, Zahara, seven, Shiloh, six, and four-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne with fiancee Angelina Jolie, splashed out on a Suzuki DRZ-125 for him and has had a motocross trail built in the grounds of their sprawling French estate, reported a website.

Brad Pitt"Brad's always been a generous dad and as Maddox has shown a keen interest in bikes, he thought he may as well get him started. He was down at the house the other week and got the builders to dig him a muddy trail all through the woods and around the lake. "Brad was just as excited as Maddox, though he's put in little jumps and puddles so they'll get really muddy. The bike has an automatic clutch and, of course, Brad's bought him a helmet too. — PTI

Seriously comic

Krushna Abhishek is flying high due to the success of his comic act in Bol Bachchan. He is glad to have got this break and says it is due to his talent.

What was the response for your role in Bol Bachchan?

It has been fabulous and great. Many people from the industry called to tell me that after Ajay Devgn and Abhishek Bachchan they liked me. I have been doing Comedy Circus for the longest time and even the judges have said that I have done a good job in Bol Bachchan.

Was it your persistence or talent that was the reason director Rohit Shetty chose you?

I don’t think anyone would cast an actor just because they ask them again and again. Rohit had already cast me but we weren’t allowed to talk about it. I am glad people saw my work and praised me, had I praised myself and it wasn’t up to the mark it would have been a tough spot for me. I am enjoying all the praise coming way.

Would you say you weren’t expecting such a good role?

I am lucky to have got such a good role. I knew it was an important one when I signed it but I didn’t think it would turn out so well or so big. This is a proper role and a third hero in the film.

Krushna AbhishekWhat did your uncle Govinda think of the film?

He said Rohit is my Godfather and he has given me a great break. Even he didn’t expect my role to be so big and such a key role. It was a pleasant surprise for everyone.

Are you worried about being slotted as a comic actor?

No. Today I have an image as a comic actor and an established image is an achievement. So I don’t want to shift anywhere. I would like to continue with comedy and entertain people.

You have often been asked about marriage with girlfriend Kashmera Shah.

Yes. But I have decided to get married the day people stop asking me about it.

If your birthday is August 9...

Number nine is the teacher, somewhat impractical but with a sympathetic vibration. You are ruled by the Mars that makes you Jack of all trades. If expressed negatively, financially careless, moody, bullying, emotional, sullen and restless. Fed up with the way your partner has been behaving lately? Talk it out. You may realise that drastic action is called for, such as putting your foot down or even, walking away from the situation once and for all.

As the year ends, the cosmos is encouraging you to tie up the loose ends in your love life. This is also an excellent time to put finishing touches to any creative project that you're working on, so you can then embark on something new.
